This time we see how to hold the movement while we access the position of the Rack Pin when it falls on to the Snail.

I have watched many hours of clock repair videos on UA-cam with the hope of finding one with the correct snail placement to help in the repair of the clock in front of me and et voila, thank you my anxiety is over

Good quick video explaining the snail function. What you didnt say is if it doesnt drop exactly where you want it to go then what is the next step. We both know that you remove the snail and turn it a tooth or two then put it back down until it is in the position that you want it to be but others might wonder what to do. LOL. Keep up the great work.

Hi Scottie, I just bought a Mason & Sullivan 141-030 clock. One of the problem if the straight spring at the bottom that holds both levers for the 2 main springs with retainer not to go back when you wind them (sorry still learning jargon just started couple of weeks ago) is barely touching the retainer on the left for the chiming part. The result is you wind it but one in ca white it lets go and goes back couple of notch. This straight spring that holds tension is there a way to pry it up ? on the right the mechanism for the time seems to be working ok, but on the left for the chiming not so good. It dropped and barely touching so almost no tension, so lets go when you crank it. Thanks
The rack of my gear assembly popped off, is it a matter of repositioning correctly in relationship to the snail?
Set the Snail at 12:00 o'clock and set the Rack to fall onto the Snail in that position.
The end of the Rack Stop Lever will then sit under the bottom of the Rack.
Make sure that the pin on the Gathering Pallet is not touching a tooth on the rack.

Hi Mr Scottie, in my german chiming clock hour hand striking wrongly like for 7 th hour it striking 6 times and sometimes for 1st hour it striking 13 times whereas how to correct it any idea?
Hand shaft may be bent. Thus will create the opportunity for the rack tail to miss the snail step entirely.
Hi Scottie. Many thanks for this interesting video. I haven't taken my clock apart again yet, before I do I have a question if you don't mind. It is a German slate striking mantle clock - once on the half hour and obviously the number for the hour every at the top. I have already taken it apart cleaned and reassembled it. It now keeps excellent time and chimes perfectly on all the half and hours except for 12 o'clock when it only strikes once then once again (correct) at half past 12 then it's correct again all the way round until 12 o'clock. My question is, is this something to do with the snail wheel alignment? I don't really want to take it apart again as it is going so well and wondered if it there is anything I could do with just the mechanism on the bench. It was OK until I adjusted the stroke of the chiming arm and that's when it seemed to go wrong? Any suggestions ? All the best Ken
Hi Scottie. Just subscribed. I was wondering, I have an antique grandfather clock that chimes 12 at 12 o'clock and 12 at 1 o'clock. All other times it chimes the right amount of times on the hour . Seems weird that the other hours would be okay...any idea what it could be?
@@skimmybras Hi thanks! I figured it had something to do with that but was worried doing that adjustment might mess up the rest of the chimes as they are hitting right. Okay, I will give it a try when I get at it and let you know.

AFTER ADJUSTING PER YOUR VIDEO : 1/ IT STILL CONTINUES TO STRIKE AT THE 12TH HOUR ONLY ( AS BEFORE ADJUSTING ) , AS THE RACK ITSELF DROP'S TOO FAR DOWNWARD AND THE ADVANCING CAM PIN WILL NOT CATCH THE RACK TO ADVANCE . 2/ THE LOCKING LEVER , REAR SIDE HAS A PIN THAT RIDES THE ADVANCING CAM , IT ONLY TOUCHES IT AT THE TOP OF THE LOPE ON CAM , SHOULD THIS PIN RIDE THE WHOLE CAM ? SORRY FOR THIS LENGTHY COMMENT AS THIS MY FIRST I HAVE SEEN THIS MOVEMENT . BEST BLESSINGS, ALBERTO .
Setting the rack tail pin in the step groove is risky. There is no reason to try for such a tiny area when the entire step will get the correct number of strikes.
Unfortunately that is not correct. The Rack must remain sliding along on the Snail for the full 60 minutes of each hour. It the Rack falls of the Snail before 1 minute to the next hour the correct number of strikes will not eventuate.
@@ScottiesClockWorld Isn't this only important for if you want to manually cause the clock to strike? The rack tail only falls on the snail once per hour
