Thanks for the close up on the worn bushing Scottie
Hi! I've watched many of your videos and really like them. I have a Sessions clock and it has a different looking j hook than some that you are showing. It is more of a flattened piece of metal with the end folded up. It moves when the minute tab gets to the hour but it holds it out too long and the clock strikes too many times since the arm that needs to go back into the long slots in the striking wheel isn't released quickly. Can you help?
Thank you… Thank you… Thank you. I tried so much to learn how the strike mechanism worked… I’m attempting to fix our 1870s. Seth Thomas pendulum clock. Thank you very much, Scotty :-)
I am glad I was able to help you sort out your clock problem. Thanks for your comment. ⏰
Brilliant video.Thank You.
I am glad that you liked the video. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Scottie is it possible to ring or email you about a paid repair job ?
Thanks Scottie
ah spring clamp , no cut knukle, knuklehead I am.
Those two names are interchangeable unfortunately if one isn't very careful. Thanks for your comment.
Do you sell clocks you restore?
Thanks, Used BOTH remove/reinstall Clock Mainsprings and could not have done it without your great videos and CLEAR spoken work!
Many thanks for your kind donation and comment, both are well received. Thanks.
I would like to have seen closeups as you do so wonderfully well, of the pivot movements as tested so we see what passes or fails. Do you know one of your other videos that show those details also for different shaft sizes. Is it possibly 10% of pivot diameter allowance?
10% slop in the bushing would be the absolute max, but I'd replace a bushing that was that bad. I am going to do a Clock Repair Essentials video showing close ups of good and bad bushing wear before long. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for posting Scottie
Thanks for posting this Scottie. I have everything I need to do this.... except time 🙁
Hi Whitney, Time is the one thing you can never have enogh of.
Stil work?
Thanks for posting Scottie, this will come in handy
I built myself a ratcheting mainspring winder. Solid aluminum and steel components.
Sounds awesome.
Thanks for posting Scottie
Awesome video. Sadly the quality of more modern clock moments aren't there anymore and the adjustments of these are more frustrating than ever. Poor quality materials and the way bushings are machined into the movement plates is horrible and more white metal is in the brass mixture. I'm working on a more modern Bertmar mantle clock, possibly late 70s or 80s and probably a Sears or the Brick special with Westminister chime every hour ( only a 2 spring). Took the clock mechanism completely apart and inspected everything. I hate the one sided riveted movement posts, I like to thoroughly take apart the movement plates and clean them. It's a nightmare to set it up. The going mainspring I think has issues and is weak, clock stops after about 10 hours for an 8 day clock. I think the quartz crisis really affected clock manufacturer quality. People want to pay chump change for major repairs on clocks and it's not even worth the time to put into machining or making basic components. Many customers only want to pay me $100 tops for repairs on there vintage ( not antique) clocks out of the 70s and 80s. Clock repairs isn't a lucrative money making career. It's a good hobby, that's about it.
Requests to have a mechanical clock repaired are few and far apart these days. I agree with you, most people baulk at paying more than $100 to have their clock repaired/serviced. I now mainly make videos to help pass on skills I've learnt over the years. Thanks for your comment.
Where can i get this spring the old one was broken
Not much room for error with super glue. Thanks for posting Scottie
Yep, it's do or die with that stuff, no time for second thoughts.
Thanks for an interesting video Scottie, it brings back memories of years ago when I was in the player piano repair trade when I used to use the old hot animal glue on the bellows when recovering them with new bellow cloth that was impregnated with a layer of rubber to make it air tight, then with the little bellows otherwise known as the pneumatics and there were 88 of them, one for each note on the keyboard. So over the years if I had dollar for each pneumatic I stripped, cleaned and recovered with new tosh then I would be a very wealthy man. However many thanks for all the most interesting videos that I have seen and may they continue for a long time yet. Jim from Coota.
Wow Jim, repairing 88 of those sure demonstrates patience. thanks for your comment.
I saw similar video and I do this all the time now. I soak for about five minutes and then scrub it between both hands with throw away gloves. The scrubbing between 2 hands lets the chain work against itself kind of like a scouring pad. Then rinse with hot water. CLR is safe for the environment as they use it to also clean drain pipes safe for copper and plastic. I have NOT had any issues with using it on brass as long as you rinse it good. I can clean 3 chains in less than30 minutes start to finish.
I have a wall curio clock that I bought from J.C. Penney in the late 80's, with a Korean movement in it. The ratchet/click on the going mainspring has worn down on most of its points so it won't wind reliably. I bought a replacement Korean movement from Merritt's, which is part 287 (long drop). Everything about the new movement matched up with the old movement, except the clock runs fast, even with the pendulum fully extended. I used the pendulum from my old movement, so I'm thinking that the "long drop" description means that it was meant for a longer case. Is there a way to adjust the new movement to use a shorter pendulum, like bending the crutch or something? Thanks.
Bummer on the hammer. Thanks for posting Scottie
If that's all the problems I have on this movement I'm in front. Thanks for your comment.
Bagus mana korea dan jepang untuk 30 hari
Could a high percentage alcohol be used to clean the spring or would that do more harm than good. Just im over burdened with alcohol and bone dry of kerosene
You can use alcohol but it is not as efficient as kero. Use a tooth brush. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for posting Scottie. I have my share these.
Had a nice sounding gong tone, Thanks Scottie
Been working a lot and got behind on the video's. Thanks for posting Scottie
do you repair cuckoo clock movements if sent via mail?
Thanks for posting Scottie
American clocks are my favorite to work on
So easy to work with and very reliable, true tanks.
Exactly
Hello Scotty I hope your having a good day
Nice to have original weights/pendulums with these old clocks. Thanks for sharing Scottie
Yes, nice not having to try to find the correct pendulum for the movement.
I'm looking forward to seeing the case refinishing for that octagonal drop clock. Thanks for the glimpse of these clocks!
Light for shooting video is not sufficient .
It's hard to set up lighting in the kitchen.
Is there a part 2 ? I can't seem to find it. I was looking to service mine.
Thanks Scottie
Hi Whitney, glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comment.
Very educational
Thanks for your comment.
Anytime
Judging the way modern art is today, you could frame your ink wiping cloth and probably fetch a nice sum for it😊
Andy Warhol once said "Art is what you can get away with" which might apply here. Thanks for your comment.
Worst explanation of finding true center that I have ever seen.
Only oil that should be used on springs are high pressure oils like keystone mainspring lubricant
Thanks for posting Scottie, hope all is well.
Yep, feeling a bit better at the moment. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you very much for your demonstration and explanation! On watching the video people will get idea to repair and use the clocks again rather than throwing them out into garbage or by the side of road. So that wastage of old ones and soil pollution are avoided.
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comment.
@@ScottiesClockWorld Please upload a video that shows the restoration and explanation of arrangement of gears of clock with centre second.
@@noelaruldas1152 , I don't have a sub-dial movement at the moment but I will shoot a video when I get one. Thanks for your comment.

I hate when that happens! Many times ive bought a set of something that's missing the one I need. 😂
Unfortunately these things happen. Thanks for your comment.
Hi mr scottie
Hi Jordan, keeping busy?
@@ScottiesClockWorld yeah always something to do
I can't find it again, but you showed your sonic cleaner formula that equals commercial products. Could you post it again or exact video name Thank you!
Sure thing. Ultrasonic Cleaner Solution This is the brew that I use these days, you can make it yourself. Works just as well as the super expensive 'professional' ones. Acetone 2% Oleic Acid 2% Detergent 2% Water 90% The figures don't add up to 100% because the first three ingredients are combined then diluted 1:9 with the water.
@ScottiesClockWorld Appreciate your response and thank you for such detailed videos!
