I bought a Marshall Origin 50 ...I have owned 2 other Plexi 50 watts over the years. (I am 74 :-) They all sounded a bit different but not extremely different. I do not use the wattage switch. I use an attenuator between the output and the cab. Dave Barber uses one in his shop to use with pedals he is working on. Before he made pedals he did mods on Marshalls for years. He has a mod that costs less than $50 in parts that changes the sound to a 1987 Plexi. The labour is pricey but it is amazing to know how little difference there is the sound between this and 1987 which costs 3 times more. I use it as a pedal platform. This amp is both a bargain and a keeper. Try your Origin with ...Presence 4, Master 7, Treble 4, Middle 6, Bass 5, Tilt 6 and Gain on 2.5 . Use it this way for a few days and your ears will climatise to it. Then tweak the sound to suit you guitar and touch. Others that have tried it find that some knobs stay the same and others are only moved a bit. I got the settings from a Marshall employee who said this is there recommended setting for salesman world wide. It works so well that if I have a gig in a club with bad acoustics I use a small EQ pedal to EQ the room I do not touch the amp! TNothing
Great review! I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said about it. Hook it up to some good speakers, add a few pedals, and this thing really sings. Very happy with mine.
I had the 50H and regret to sold it, in a period of my life where I was using only everything at 10. But today I would give again a try to this amp even for some funky style with my Strat...
Thanks! Great review! But what head whould you advice for a RHCP cover band? You got all kind of Marshall heads, also the Silver Jubilee. I wonder whould this head be a good start for Frusciante tones, for band practice, giging and home practice. I have a Zoom G5n to shape the sound but also seperate pedals.. I can get a used Origin 50 head for around 300 euros but with your experience on Marshall heads I would really like to hear your thougths. Thanks
I bought one of these a few months back for £350 not really expecting too much. Now it's making me not want to play much through my other amps. It just responds so well to pedals. I'd say it's probably not the kind of amp you can plug into and immediately get the sound you want which is why I think it turned a few people off. Once you get over having to dial in some more extreme EQ settings though it's an absolute steal for the money.
Far and away the best review of this amp on youtube. Wild that the origins aren't more popular, guess they're just misunderstood. It's definitely a modern classic and sits beside the AC15 w/alnico blue and 68 custom Fender Princeton as the 3 best modern tube amps under a grand. Thanks for showing the astounding tones its capable of.
I also have a Origin 50... I can't seem to get the power selector switch to respond when using a 4x12" cab. I have three speaker cabinets in the studio, and the power selection only seems to work on the 2X12" cab. I have two additional 4x12" and when you switch from low to medium to high wattage there is zero audible difference - as if the switch is bypassed and has zero function. Then plus the 2x12" back in and the low-mid-high power output switch responds in the db drop as you'd expect - this cannot be normal?
Many thanks. Yes it would be plenty loud enough at full 50 watts. Yes I think this would be great for Punk either with pedals in front or just leaving it on the boost section.
Nice, I use an Angry Charlie with this too. Poor man's JCM800 lol. I think the usefulness of this amp as a pedal platform is lost on alot of players expecting a lead channel.
Hi Paul, Thanks for the feedback. I’m using a Zilla 2x12 vintage 30 loaded cabinet here. I do believe there is a Marshall Origin cabinet you can get though. Any cab will do though, that way you can experiment with speakers too.
Just wondering, if you turn the gain up a bit on the amp, and then used a Golden Plexi pedal, could you boost the gain up to like Guns n Roses level gain?
Hi, Potentially. I don’t think it would teach guns n Roses style gain though. Although I use a JHS sweet tea into the front of mine and it absolutely kills all my gain needs. Depends how much gain you require I guess. I think with the right pedal into this amp it would do it. 😊
Go with a DSL (or a Jubilee if u have the $$). GnR is classic Marshall roar + sustain. The Origin is more like a pokey low gain tone that doesn't ring out and get raunchy. The DSL 40 is in the same price range as this, and it's a combo.
Glad you are also a big fan of this amp. It really does take pedals well. Just a preference for me to run my reverb and delay in the loop. Fantastic amp for the price too.
Thanks Mate. If i ever do get this amp, i wont have to read the damn manual. I’l just go to this. This about answerers all my questions since coming across this Origins 50 a couple days ago here on UA-cam. I’d too use mine for pedals. I want simplicity in a Marshall head. When i saw the price (in dollars) thinking it would be $1500-2000, i had to rub my eyes seeing $500/$499.99 I looked at the price again and looked to see again if it did really say “Marshall.” However i disregarded the whole thing after hearing “made in Asia.” But, coming back to more and more reviews and this one makes it more appealing. When you said turn presence off treble a 2 made even more sense. Funny about your story not getting the foot switch. I’m always doing stuff like that, getting excited about something, getting it home and not working. Then it is usually a simple solution why haha. Beating your head agains the wall calling support, with them saying something like, “Try using the ‘on’ switch. But the most important thing you said, me being just a home garage player, is that you said, “Inspiring” Cheers Mate (my best fake English accent available)
Mike Elmendorf ELMENDORFXY thank you mate. I’m still loving mine. Takes pedals really well. I think it’s my favourite Marshall I’ve owned and it’s the cheapest.
15 Minute Guitar Is there a noticeable drop in DBs going from a pedal to clean? Does the volume stay the same or drop considerably going from something like an overdrive pedal to no pedal? Would the Origin 50 be able to do The Pixies “loud-quiet” shifts during a song, or would that be better suited for an amp with two channels? Thanks
Mike Elmendorf ELMENDORFXY I think it’s all about setting the clean channel to a decent level and then setting the overdrive pedal to give a slight volume boost. That’s how I’ve set mine and it’s working a treat. 👍
15 Minute Guitar yes that’s what I ultimately am missing in my amps. The only thing I’m worried about is that I got the 50 instead of the 20. But I wanted to have a decent headroom amount, plus I have a Rivera Rockcrusher to shave off some decibels. Take care thanks again for the reply
duderdudeedoo1984 you’ve made the right decision mate. The 50 will give you the headroom you require and you can switch it down if you feel you need to. Mine is always on mid setting. Haven’t put it on low at home ever. 👍
What settings did you have for mv tmb gain please its hard to see. Best demo of this amp. I think you may have solved my Overdrive round with the angry Charlie.
Paul Taylor that’s great. The angry Charlie is fantastic. Did you mean what setting was the gain set to? It’s normally roughly around 4 if not just before depending on whether I play hum-buckers or single coils.
Paul Taylor ahh ok cool. Where it’s set at the moment is treble and mid on 6 bass on 5 and gain set as I said. Prescence has crept up to around 2 now also.
@@firdeye2681 you’re welcome mate. Sounds like a great amp that. Marshall and fender If I could take to every gig would be my ultimate set up. Marshall for the gain and Fender for the cleans. 👍

Great review! I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said about it. Hook it up to some good speakers, add a few pedals, and this thing really sings. Very happy with mine.
What speakers would u recommend please mate
Do you use the pedals, even overdrives, all in the loop effect in and out? Or in front of it?
Good review and likewise I run all my pedals up front as a pedal platform.
Great video and one of the best demo on this lovely Marshall sound, well done man . Rock on !!!!

recordatron completely agree with you mate. Glad you’re enjoying yours also. For the money it’s a fantastic amp.
Great review. What speaker are you using in this video? Great tone
Zilla 2 x 12 vertical cabinet loaded with Vintage 30 speakers.
A reverb, eq pedal and any distortion or overdrive and you’re off to the races, and if you want metal from it just throw a distortion pedal in front
