Thanks for the video. My light switch inside my entry door for the garage exterior and entry flights only had 2 black wire, but I saw the white and the ground wires inside that I needed to hook up and everything works as it suppose to. I had a very good feeling that's what I needed to do, but checked out UA-cam and your video confirmed what I thought. Great video and I'm sure it's helped out many people. Cheers!
While doing some research on programmable light switches. I stumbled on your video because of your easy to follow step by step instructions. I went with this exact switch and installed it with ease. Thanks!!!!
I had installed timer by the install sheet, no problem. But I could not figure from the instructions how to turn the timer on and off everyday. This video clarified that and I’m up and running. Thank you.
Hey John, my clock stays on all the time and also tells if the timer switch is in "AUTO" in addition to the current status of the light. The blue backlighting does turn off after a couple seconds. Is yours acting differently?
Not understanding the auto manual and random button. I programmed my lights for dusk and Dawn. My auto manual and random button are off. But the instructions read when on it follows the program. When I select it to on, my lights turn on. Please explain
I am not a licensed electrician and don’t know the code in your area but I know there are many applications where switches are not grounded in plastic electrical boxes. Best of luck.
Everyday Home Repairs I found the bare copper wire. They were way in the back and covered in pant/texture. All good now. Thank you for the reply. You have a new subscriber.
I just installed this switch. I have it programmed for 1 program. Everyday on at dusk and off at dawn. It does not turn them on or off. I can press the main door / button and manually operate the switch but the auto / program is not working. I have made sure it is set to AUTO, and not MANUAL or RANDOM. Could the line and load be reversed? Any ideas?
After watching your video I decided to use one for the lights on the outside of my garage. I have a light on either side. On the timer switch there are 2 holes for each the load, line, and neutral. Is it best to use each hole for each light or pigtail and use one each.
It is up to you but I would probably run the black wire (hot) from the load set of wires into the load hole, then the 2 black wires going out to the lights into the 2 holes for the lines. Bring all the neutrals together into a wire nut with a pigtail coming out to the the neutral hole on the switch and doing the same for the grounds. Should be noted I am not an electrician but this is how I would approach the install. Best of luck and be safe.
Hi I tried to install this timer as a 3 way I did exactly like the instructions but it didn't work as 3 way I found no UA-cam video for this please advise
I have just installed the Defiant Model 32648 at two locations. I have installed the units properly on a One Way switch. They are programmed properly. The lights will turn on / off manually using the door switch push feature, but they will not turn on / off automatically. I am using the default program and the panel says "AUTO Off". I have triple checked all times AM / PM etc. Any ideas?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I used the default program and I have not used the custom program. I use the default dusk and dawn times which are pre-programmed for the South Zone. I have an identical timer Model 32648 which I installed last year which works as designed. The two I installed this week both have the same problem which tells me it is not likely to be an issue with the timer. I know the installation is correct. I am using LED bulbs, but the Model 32648 is compatible with those and my existing Model 32648 works fine with the LED bulbs.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs It seems you would not have to set up a "program" if you have been through all the initial steps concluding at 9:04 in your video. I would think that the default program would go on at Dusk and off at Dawn everyday without having to set up a program. But you are saying that if you do not set up Program 1 as you have in the second part, the timer will not come on and off at all, but will only work manually by pressing the door switch?
Hello Thanks for a great video..... I am replacing my old Jasco EJ500 timer. That timer has 3 wires pre-installed, Black, Blue and Red that is not used. My new timer is ge sunset timer which looks identical to yours. In my box I have 2 black wires and a ground. There was no neutral in the old switch. Where would the wires load my light, line 115vac and ground. Must I add a neutral?
Hey Mr Wood Beast not sure the GE/Defiant timer will work without a common. I checked this website waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-GE-15312-timer.html and they show a way to wire but also state that it is not up to code. They recommend the Intermatic ST01C for instances without a common but still offering a timer functionality. Best of luck and let me know if you have any follow up questions.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thanks for your fast and informative reply. The Jasco timer is old and fails to work. I agree about the common. But the old timer has a ground and a blk and blu wires, weird . I will let you know ok?
I have doubts about the two black wires. When you removed them from the original switch how do you know which black wire goes with the black wire in the new assembly?
Hey Bill, if you follow the programming instructions starting at the 7:48 minute mark that will adjust your Dawn and Dusk times automatically to track with the seasons as long as you also set your correct region. Is that the functionality you are looking for or do you have a different use case?
I don’t use dusk to dawn I use the time. Sorry if I’m not explaining this better. I just want to know how to change the times every couple of months. Thanks
Hey lamknwother, that usually means a wiring issue. I would check the wiring again to make sure there isn't a short. Does the breaker trip as soon as you turn on the breaker or when you go to the light timer switch and turn it on?
These switches are tremendous. However in regards to the zone such as north, central, south, do you know if the zone is the GAP in-between the lines, or does the zone correlate strictly WITH the lines as shown in the user manual?
I think you should be good as the Defiant timer is compatible with incandescent, LED and CFL bulbs. One note is you do need a neutral wire which isn't always ran to the switch you are replacing with the defiant. Good luck on the project.
I am unable to set the program. For some reason it will not come on my timer for me to set. I have tried several times to reset the timer, with good success. But I cannot program it for every they. Help
Hi, thanks for this video. I have the same timer. After I set the timer I see "AUTO" in the bottom left and then it says "OFF" in the bottom right. I see that yours says the same thing. After I set my timer the lights didn't come on. But when I pressed the white door flap on the bottom while it was in the closed position the "OFF" in the bottom right went to "ON" and then my lights came on. Is this what has to be done for the timer to work at my programmed settings? Or does this just leave the lights on permanently until I press that door/button again?
Hey ABC, the “Auto” should indicate your timer settings is activated. The “Off” you see is simply the current state of the switch. If the clock time hits your set time this will move to “ON” or you can manually control the switch like you mentioned. You did mention you have waited for the correct time to pass and the switch didn’t turn on?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thanks for such a prompt reply. I live in a duplex and have two timers that control holiday lights outside. There are two units and I got one to work perfectly but ours didn't come on today until I pressed the door flap while in the closed position again. I'll probably have to try again and reset it.
@@AdrienBCaldwell yeah I would go through another attempt to set the timer as you know the switch is actually working since you can turn on/off manually. Maybe something didn't save and the On time isn't set to dusk/desired time. Best of luck!
Nice video. Any idea how you can add a dimmer switch to this unit? I have a 3 switch like yours, but 1 of the switches is for an old outlet I removed and is now dead. I’d like to make that a dimmer for the lights connected to the programmable unit
Install dimmer connected with the LOAD terminal and wire your light fixture to the dimmer. Basically the Defiant timer switch will provide power to the dimmer switch rather than the lighting circuit directly. Seems like that would work perfectly to me.
Hmmm, if you press the on/off button do the lights turn on and off? This would be independent of the timer and be a good test to see if the wiring is correct.
It will be much better if the color of the wires are clear, with your video, all wires look like painted in white. So it's not clear what you are doing
