When you said "people misunderstand how pulleys and gears work" I scoffed and thought, pfffft that's not me.

Was thinkin the same thing. I was reminded to never forget the basics.. I forgot that the torque would equal it out.
I'm happy I thought of rpm matching first.
depending on the load you'll want higher speeds on the generator, so you get more volts and are able to get enough amps through to get the maximum amount of watts you can. (you could also use an "electronic belt", like an inverter or a boost converter, but that's usually less efficient than a belt drive.)
btw do you check the power after the variac or before? because due to losses you might be only getting 50-90% of the power reading if you read after the variac, and that efficiency is dependent on the load, so you might have skewed results

In mechanical engineering they teach it as more about RPM and less about power. Though they do teach how it impacts torque as they are connected. Increasing the ratio decreases the torque so it's a balancing act.

@World Academy Of Music I think that capitalizing on existing losses comes after a lot of experimentation. You'll know from the thumbnail when Quint pulls the turbine away from the front of the truck.
I was thinking of "drafting" when one car "breaks the wind" and subsequent very close cars use less power to go the speed of the first one. There must be something like that, not to decrease the power used by followers, but to harness some otherwise wasted energy for the turbine. I should say that the energy used by the leader with followers increases.
You see the same thing with migrating geese. They have one bird at the point and the point bird swaps with followers fairly frequently. The whole Vee flies faster that way.
@World Academy Of Music And the rest; The truck rig makes an idealized mobile test bed with tons of controllable variables. Kind of hard to find a source of predictable / controllable 55 pmh wind in a home garage with out a ton of investment.

When I was a kid, all I did was create, take apart, experiment with, you name it. As I got older, there were a lot of distractions. I like watching your channel as it brings back that creative feeling that I haven't had in a while.
When I was growing up I wanted to be just like my dad.
He could lift his hand to anything, seriously a jack of all trades and I was always around asking him this or that at what he was doing.
Well I'm 50 now and I did became just like my dad, thank you dad!

Great video, and great setup! I'm drooling over your shop equipment. That's a huge generator. You'd make an excellent teacher. I had an idea for a video like this a while back, but I was going to use a pole inserted into a receiver hitch with 2 support cables into the rear door jambs or windows. Keep the blades at least 1 foot above the roof of the vehicle to avoid disturbed air.
I can only imagine the "what in tarnation" reactions of people driving by this. This is so cool, like such a random experiment, but so much knowledge and engineering in this! Also I'm a sucker for 70s fords.

Hey it's me again, the former wind turbine guy. Have you considered tapering the tips backwards to reduce vortices? It may be marginal, but it could certainly improve blade speed. That's how high-speed bladed aircraft achieve maximum efficiency.

I totally agree with the "people want sugar over substance" remark. My channel is about fixing old VW Beetles, and though it's got quite a few subscribers, it's entertainment whatnpeople prefers the most over educational content.
But at the end of the day, it's us that fix the problem when those entertsinment lovers end up with a problem they can't solve and don't have the money to solve it.

Some of us don't own VW Beetles [air-cooled ones; the new water-cooled ones aren't Beetles, they're just Golfs in swoopy body-work...] any more, but still appreciate a bit of comedy attached to a vid about their maintenance... ;-)
One consideration is that a video targeting people who want to learn more about fixing vehicles is only for a very small number of people with that interest whereas just entertainment has no barrier to entry. I don't think it's only that people just want entertainment(though quite a few do I think).
My entertainment is a substance. I love this brain feeling when new neuron connections are growing :v
Would like to see fuel economy stats with and without turbine to see is it even worth it.
My gut says simply put that amount of gas into a generator. Easier and more efficient.
I can go ahead and tell you it's not, because otherwise he's invented a free energy machine and that's certainly not the case.

@@ss-sq1hn And those turbines convert the energy of 700,000 lbs falling from 40,000 ft at 600mph to electrical energy with some being converted to heat in the process. Not really a situation we're concerned about fuel economy, and certainly not free energy.

@World Academy Of Music listen to this ~ objective is not to prevent drag on vehicle but to minize it lower the parasitic losses of alternator and drag is created when the blades are not moving when they start moving energy transfer takes place total drag gets reduced , so at crusing or coasting of big vehicles energy recovery can be positive for electric vehicles as no energy is used while crusing down or straight for big vehicles for long

Thanks! It's a resto-mod I did with the engine, trans, transfer case, ABS, and A/C from a totaled 2004 F150. Just took it thru DEQ testing again and it beat the old 1978 standard no sweat!

Really nice videos. Great engineering, one thing I would say is to switch the belt to a chain drive as you are likely losing a heck of a lot of torque using a belt vs a chain drive as belts can lose anywhere up to around 30% vs around 3-7% on chain.
Belt is better. No friction or metal parts to grease. You don't see a chain on your fan under the hood of your truck.
@@wesleyredondo2523 No you dont, but your fan doesnt have to convey much torque, it doesnt matter if your fan in your truck is inefficient, for a high torque application a chain makes quite a bit of a difference, also once a year maintenance if that of reoiling a chain and you can get some really long lasting ones, plus a chain will likely wear about the same amount as the belt if you ignored maintaining the chain unless its reinforced steel core.
While this kid is learning electrical engineering, the kids in da hood are memorizing their favorite RAP tunes to become aspiring musicians.....

They are actually made to do that and big wind mills have a braking system while smaller blades are made to bend as a way of slowing it down

Should be better to tilt the blade towards the ground maybe 20 or 30 degrees and used some ground effect plus maybe better attack on the prop blades, or have a double blade one in front of the other with less blades on each?
What about using a screw type tube propeller prop, lying under the bumper you can utilise a ground effective even more.
When you make the blade make it like a bird's wing I don't see blades like this where the straight edge has no material Just the leading edge and tail, this should make the Wing faster because there's no drag on any material, make it out of carbon fibre should be strong enough. I'm not sure about winglets is it worth putting winglets on not something I've seen on a prop.

Thanks for all the support everyone! Many are asking about the drag on the vehicle and the overall efficiency, so let me attempt to address that here:
- the main goal of this video is EDUCATION (and fun).
- of course there is no "free energy" or "free lunch". Any electricity the generator produces MUST come from gasoline consumed. BUT...
- the drag on the front of the vehicle alone, pushing through the air, consumes significant fuel.
- adding objects (like a big round disc) in the air stream destined to impact the truck should not increase overall vehicle drag (much).
- a modern airfoil (wind turbine) is FAR more efficient at changing (harvesting) momentum of wind than a 1978 bronco front end.
Given all that, here's the ultimate question I have:
Will transferring drag from the front of a grossly inefficient vehicle to the blades of a highly efficient turbine allow RECOVERY of ANY of the spent hydrocarbons in gasoline? The gasoline engine itself is only 25% efficient so that severely limits what's possible right from the start. But I'm hoping once this thing starts to crank out thousands of watts that the change or lack-of-change in fuel consumption will eliminate all doubt as to the physics of the situation. I've wondered about this since I was a fledgling engineering student looking for ways to spend less money on gas. Now I have the means (thanks in no small part to you) to test my hypothesis. I'd love to figure out some way to eventually use the electricity to help propel the vehicle down the road but that would be very expensive and more complex than I'm prepared to tackle. Easiest would be to replace the electricity generated by the factory alternator, reducing load on the engine, but that's only a couple hundred watts at most.
For those that insist this would violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics, I've already been handed videos of professionally built prototype electric cars where they claimed 8-10% additional range from far more aesthetically pleasing installations (tucked into the nose of the car). If it's a hoax they went to a lot of trouble to pull it off. But like I said, my project is primarily for education. When it's done, whether it works or not, thousands if not millions of viewers will have learned about wind power, electricity, fabrication, mechanics and engineering and that's what I'm all about. Our current education system is good, but we can do better. This is me doing my part to that end.
For those concerned about my son getting injured from an airbag, thank you for your concern, but the truck predates airbag requirements by decades. Yes kids, there was a time before airbags and anti-lock brakes when vehicles were little more than an engine connected to wheels and a seat. Some also have noticed my bronco is not exactly stock. Well it's a "resto-mod" I did myself back in 2004 using a totaled 2004 F-150 as the donor. I did it because I love old trucks but also things like cruise control, air conditioning, a collapsible steering column and anti-lock brakes. There is an airbag light on the dash that comes on when the passenger seatbelt gets connected but the passenger airbag from the donor vehicle is resting comfortably on a shelf in my shop. So if we were unfortunate enough to get in a head on collision, it would be incredibly unlikely for that airbag to simultaneously deploy by some quantum entanglement with the wires that used to connect to it. Actually, that would be AMAZING. I think I'll put a security camera on it just in case...

The machining and installation of all of this is worth a watch even if none of the energy efficiency stuff worked out. My thought process was: how much energy would this turbine produce if stationary in a given velocity of wind? Now move the turbine at that speed instead. What’s the net energy? Zero.
I'm genuinely curious about this concept too! For years I've had the idea to put wind tunnels through the car around the location of fog lights (though that might be a bit close to the axil) with either 1 or a series of turbines (like your rotor, but the blades inside) use an air funnel at the start to either increase or pressurise the air going in to add extra power to turn the turbine/fan. Original imagined tunnel diameter around 100mm

@naveen kumar ever seen a vehicle alternator that could make over 1kw?
This is water under the bridge but a car alternator makes a great brake that you can control through the field windings. You tie the three phases together and it spins freely until you power the windings. Alternators are heavy duty with a built-in fan and it could dissipate 10kW for a while with cold air blasting on it. Great video, well narrated, clear explanations. Thank goodness for UA-cam where people with good ideas and information can pass it to others

Consider the difference of it mounted above the truck vs. where it is now. Not so simple I think. That is the question we will eventually answer.

@@GeorgeWashingtonLaserMusket good comment! it makes sense to me. this is not free energy, but energy recovery: or at least is energy recovery if the drag of the turbine is less than the drag of the front car.
It not about free energy but about increase efficiency.
You could do the same, for example, driving an electric car and recharging it with an industrial generator, altough it can sound stupid, the increased efficiency of the stationary motor and the electrical car can and in fact will end with less energy consumed per distance.
I think maybe to try and sum up this whole comment thread in simpler terms:
It's more like regen braking than "free energy".

June 21, 1961 "Donald and the Wheel" was released by Disney in conjunction with "The Mellomen". It is a 17 minute "short" but towards the end of it he does a really cool job of explaining gear ratios. He doesn't go into as much detail as you do--but this cartoon is DEF worth looking up and watching--if you can find it. I wished I had a copy of it.

I've had an idea for quite some time using this concept. My idea however included the concept of air scoops strategically placed creating a wind tunnel directing air to single or multiple turbines to assist in recharging an electric type motor and a battery bank. This could leave a clean looking concept along with using other "recharging methods" like braking or magnetic power to assist in the power management adding to the efficiency of motors.
Thought about this concept too, could work on EVs to extend range by charging batteries.

The Finnish education system is built around engagement, education, and entertainment. They have one of the best education systems in the world when you look at statistics. There is nothing wrong with making something educational also entertaining. Its important to capture attention in order to provide education. Keep up the good work.

One thing though, if you put a wind turbine on the front of a vehicle here in the UK you would instantly get pulled over and told to remove the people mincer fitted to the front of your vehicle or face penalties.
