I got this as my first Kindle, coming from Android. I'm really satisfied with the product. I can read more now using ambient light, and only need to use the built in light the dark. You can turn off full page refresh and it'll change pages a little faster , you might notice ghosting but it's very difficult to notice with only text, also this helps save battery. I like how you can read PDFs relatively easily on it too. Additionally the construction is very solid in the hands and not heavy, with a clean design because the screen sits at the same level as the frame.

How can you turn off full page refresh? I really need it to read Arabic script (I don't know why it's so slow to process Arabic script, maybe because it has many diacritics I think). But I couldn't find it in the settings...

I would suggest Replay by Ken Grimwood The novel tells of a 43-year-old man who dies and wakes up back in 1963 in his 18-year-old body. He then relives his life with all his memories intact of the previous 25 years. This happens repeatedly with the man playing out his life differently in each cycle.

@@inv3st_eth839 I use Amazon and Kindle Good Reads for my books. They seem to have the largest selection. If it.is in digital format, they have it. Also, I just like the Kindle paperwhite because it is just an E-Reader, but still connected to the internet. So I have access to books but also a dictionary and other resources for reading only. 80 and switched to digital in 2007: #1 source remains the public library for audio and e-books, anyone on the edge grab the low cost Kindle Fire for $50, it will pay for it's self no need for unlimited or book purchases, between the library and the large select of free books Amazon offers. I own dozens of e-readers and just added the Oasis, they will all meet your needs no matter which you chose.

Thanks for the preview. I got my father a kindle back in 2012 or 2013 and he pulled it out today and started using it again, I took a look over it and saw that it still connected and did all the things it did back then. I was considering getting him a newer one, but to be honest, the functionality of the older one seems pretty similar aside from the audible/bluetooth support, so I almost feel like after seeing it, the touch/swipe features feel a little off or sluggish or something, but that's the page 'ink' refresh. It is nice though to have something with tons of content to read without the distractions of your phone or tablet and much easier on the eyes with the 'ink' as it were. I'm kind of tempted now to find an older unit and getting that kindle unlimited for a month though and just reading tons of content.

I would love to see how the Audible works on it. I am so behind that I don't even know how to use bluetooth. Wow. I'm officially old.
Anyway, I got a gift card so I treated myself to one of these a couple of months ago. I don't swim/do beaches/read in tub, but I love the waterproof feature because I'm always out and about. I used to always have to put my various ereaders in a plastic bag when it would rain. Now I don't have to worry!
Yeah, it's not the fanciest. But it works well for me. I bought a Fintie snap on case to keep it safe. It's just the book-like cover foldover, not the kind where you put it all the way inside. I wanted that kind but I don't think anyone makes them. I tried for days, with no luck. I don't have kids and I'm pretty careful with my things, so this works fine for me.

The supposed long battery life is described by Amazon as "1/2 hr a day for 6 weeks" which equals 21 hours. I'd call that a fairly short battery life, and I'm glad I know that before I receive mine and am disappointed about this, like so many people.

If I use a cable once every few weeks I can guarantee you it will get lost at some point and then I will have no cable to charge it with because all my other devices are usb-c. Heck even Nintendo opted for usb-c.

I've been having trouble with this from start; Audibles not showing - finally showing but getting the "not in your library" message - bluetooth not connecting - and on top of that, poor customer service at both Audible and Amazon.

Was given to my son as gift on Dec 31 2019. October 31, 2020 it died. Sucks. And since it was bought by relatives in the US and we are in Asia, theres nothing that we could do...even though the warranty should have been good at that time. It's so slow and laggy. I cant even put pdfs in it because it would just freeze the device. I wish we got one of those BrandX made in China tablets instead. Because if those broke down, I wouldnt be surprised and it would have been value for the money.

Well, truth is that making it faster and giving it a prettier UI will make the battery last way less than what it lasts now, so to increase autonomy they will give it a bigger (and heavier) battery to compensate, making the device bigger and heavier and losing the essence of it: small and easy to carry, light-weighted, long-lasting battery. Makes sense?

The other day I put a batch of clothes in the washing machine only to discover when it was finished that my Kindle was among the clothes.
OMG I thought that's it my Kindle is dead. I let it dry a bit near a heater and tried to start it again. Something appeared on the screen but it wouldn't move. I decided to call Amazon to ask if when you buy a new Kindle you have to download all your books manually / one by one. While talking on the phone, I pressed again the start button and suddenly it did start again, and all my books were there ! I was amazed...
Note that I don't have the 2018 model. I bought my Kindle in 2012 I think.

I was wondering if I should upgrade but after looking at this video is really nothing new for me that's worth jumping and spending a bunch more money. The only thing I could see value in is Bluetooth because then I could Bluetooth in a tiny little Clicker to advance the pages instead of touching.

0:36 Yeah, because it's much easier for me to have the front light built-in rather than doing the thing with the torchlight and book under a blanket.
1:16 From what I remember, the PDF experience on the original Paperwhite (which was what I had, before selling it off due to low use) was appaling*, mainly with my college textbooks, yeah, those really slowed the thing down. I'm sure the processor in the new one would probably be throttled enough most of the time to where it's enough for reading Kindle/Audible content, then ramp up when reading PDFs or browsing Web sites.
*Darn it Gboard, that's a real word!
2:56 In my opinion, the reason why I chose the ad-free version, was mainly because Amazon Australia didn't have Kindle Special Offers at the time, but also because Amazon has a nice set of writing-related screensavers (which they also had as lock screen backgrounds on some of their Fire devices), and you don't need to swipe after pressing the power button like on the ad-supported versions.
Too bad Amazon doesn't provide an official way to get custom screensavers, and I eventually switched to a Likebook device, which not only doesn't have a fully compliant implementation of USB-C, but its screensaver functionality only allows for one screensaver at a time, and doesn't rotate through images like on Kindle and Nook devices.
3:01 "…but I've never had any problems" except the fact that you have to swipe after pressing the power button, instead of just pressing it. I'm assuming it has been written into your muscle memory at one point in time, though.
5:25 The older Kindle 5.x firmware had a more involved tutorial, but I have no idea why they decided to dump that and go with something less involved, instead of just providing an option to skip it altogether.
8:58 Meanwhile, the original Paperwhite only had 2 or 4 GB, somewhere around there, and the Likebook Mimas (which is the current e-reader I use) has only 16 GB of storage, but has a memory card slot, and they were nice enough to leave in the Android "format memory card as internal storage" feature. Yes, it runs a heavily modified version of Android.

I have an iPad mini 5 that I’ve been using as my kindle reader...I purchased a matte screen cover and I lowered the back light down under half brightness. I’m wondering how much different the Paperwhite is compared to that setup...and if it’s worse how much. I don’t want to waste the extra cash on something that isn’t gonna be a huge difference.
