Thinking how Japan basically skipped almost 300 years of technological advancements and gained it in a few decades and still maintain its title as the most technologically advanced Asian country even after beaten up badly during World War Two is wild
It's called devaluing Human lives.
Try to think of it... China is pulling the same move in the past decades.
This was only made possible by social developments during the Edo period. During that era Japan developed banking, joint-stock companies, high literacy and a mobile population that could move around without tolls. A magic combination for industrialization.
to be honest they are kind of being overtaken by south korea which has rapidly displacing in the technology field, they have more or less corned the computer chip market along with taiwan and they have overtaken japan in the car industry.
Japan is very technologically advanced but nevertheless i would say that these days the most advanced technologies can usually be found in Korea, Taiwan or some select parts of China.
Love the Shogun 2 total war intro lmfao
Imagine if it was animated. It would’ve been legendary
Brings back memories.
I was about to say that lol

Our men are running away from the battlefield!
The oversimplified napoleon hight thing was funny
Agreed
I mean
He ain't wrong
Hey, am average hight for the time you JERK.
Oh I’m sure this conflict will not cause anyone TO DIE
Yea no shit
It's 5 AM in Poland, and you just gave me another reason why not to sleep.

Satsuma: “I can’t believe I’m going to die fighting alongside Choshu.”
Choshu: “How about fighting alongside a friend?”
Satsuma: “Hai. I can do that.”
Tears dripping from my eyes
1:03 Does anyone else get PTSD when Ezekiel uses the war declaration sound, uprising sound and stability losing sound from EU4?
yes
The war declaration sound always raises my blood pressure.
yes but in a good way
The irony is that those who wanted to overthrow Shogunate and remove foreign influence in Japan became prominent figures who were willing to embrace foreign systems when they won over shogunate.
Hate to be cynical but it just goes to show it’s rarely about principles and often only about power.
And then they lost their own powers and privilages to same central modernization they introduced, with the exception of traditional influence over army/navy respectively, the branch rivality that crippled them during world war 2 for exchange.
24:40 fun fact:
French army advisors in Japan introduced high kicks into Karate from the French martial art of Savate
Proof?

I still can't believe this guy is pumping such high quality content with such little time
No joke this guy deserves way more recognition
I love your channel. I always liked country balls and history. So thank you. Love from Slovenia 🇸🇮🇸🇮
Meiji restoration is really fascinating event
45:12 “the japanese army, without orders from tokyo…” good thing that wont become a trend later on….surely….
The amazing cameo from oversimplified
A series in the Korean Empire would be awesome!!
sit still and try not die to the turmoils from china and japan for a thousand years lmfao
Yes! That does sound interesting!
Yes!
Korea's history is not that fascinating as it was basically a vassal state of China. I once visited a history museum in Germany, which had less than a tenth of the historical exhibits related to Korea, compared to Japan and China.
@@ALLKASDLLS-mg4luthis is absolutely false I did a study abroad in Korea and there is definitely a lot of interesting history. Such as Admiral Yi’s defense against Japanese shogunate invasion, the unification of the three kingdoms of Korea, the Korean resistance movement, and the defense of Busan during the Korean War, etc.
I love how they were the irl equivalent of sped running your tech tree to catch up with other players’ civilizations. A prime example of Japan’s adaptability when necessary.
Ain't no way you just animated the Shogun 2 intro, it's so good.
I now finally know the full story behind the Sabaton song Shiroyama.
Yeah and how it has more in common with the movie "The Last Samurai" than actual history
🌸 Genuinely an immensely interesting period of history that I feel needs more coverage in the west. Great video
The Meiji Era and Japan's Modernization has always fascinated me. How a society that had virtually no advancement for two centuries and was essentially a forgotten backwater then turns into a Modern Great Power in the span of 50 years is truly incredible. If it has any lessons for us today it is that we should never underestimate what time and determination can do.
I'd also be interested to hear about the other cultural changes that happened in Japanese society at this time. I know a lot of what is considered modern Japanese cuisine originated in the Meiji Era, like for example Tonkatsu, which is basically just a schnitzel or dressed pork chop Japanized, since before the Meiji Restoration meat eating moved between being frowned upon and illegal in Japan.
Japan understood that ones culture is in how one does something. Not the substance.
Learning more about it breaks the idea that it was all sunshine and roses, it's fascinating to see all the hurdles that came with it, but that could be said in any golden era of any nation. What they did is still a magnificent feat nonetheless
@@madensmith7014 And you can still see it in the culture of each nation. Japan continually innovates, while trying to stay as closed as possible. And china is STILL catching up to japan, hundreds of years later.
Ironic thing is that Tonkatsu is based on French ‘côtelettes’ or ‘cutlets’ in English, so it isn’t directly related to Schnitzels at all
@@yuyoshida7359 yeah, I said dressed pork chops. Townsends has a few videos about 18th century dressed pork chops or cutlets that show those earlier recipes that inspired tonkatsu and other katsu dishes. But schnitzel is also a related recipe and is closest to modern tonkatsu, since their both fried.
Criminally underrated channel. Your viral moment is around the corner, keep up the good work!
I love that they put oversimplified reference
Thank the heavens Ezekiel has descended and released some more awesome content
The sound and video effects in this video, especially at the start is amazing
the brief oversimplified cameo with the napoleon bit was great!!!
Great video man. I would not be suprised that your channel will grow to be one of the largest historical channels of youtube!
many people say that china is the Germany of Asia but I disagree imo, Japan is the Germany of Asia because both countries were fractured and were united by a strong man leader type and then became the power houses of each region, and the funny thing is both countries defeated big countries like Russia and France respectively and both lost a great war but still mange to become global power in making cars
True
The Chinese are the Jews of Asia.
*Luang Wichitwathakan*
Japan is actually the ancient Nazi Germany of Asia if you look at the Imjin War.

Miyasan Miyasan at the end was a nice touch
The video was amazing.
The Total War Shogun 2 style intro was the perfect setup for the era of change where Japan went from an isolationist feudal society to a modern superpower. This is one of my favorite eras in Japanese history, so I'm glad you could finally cover this magnificent period of Japan's history.
This is a masterpiece
Wow, reanimating the Shogun 2 intro just for a 30 second Intro. The animation and effort that goes into these Videos is Insane.
16:50 and that's how "Battotai" was made
40:20 and that's how "Yuki no shingun" was made
A real masterpiece!
Nice Shogun 2 intro, loved the reference.

One thing I find interesting about Japan is how they interpret and implement foreign rules and how culture is crossed over.
CallmeEzekiel one of the best countryballs youtubers
Is no one gonna talk about how the Japanese were literally using a former confederate states of America warship and they were fighting against the so-called Ezzo Republic style after the American style democracy so technically, if you think about it, the confederates got a final laugh in Japan when they destroyed the Japanese style America
The shogun 2 refrence is awesome
Sleeping nah, watching Ezekiel's new video? YES SIR
Gonna be a W video
I just started reading a book called 'Samurai Assassins Dark Murder and the Meiji Restoration' so this video couldn't have come at a better time
