    The Meiji Era and Japan's Modernization has always fascinated me. How a society that had virtually no advancement for two centuries and was essentially a forgotten backwater then turns into a Modern Great Power in the span of 50 years is truly incredible. If it has any lessons for us today it is that we should never underestimate what time and determination can do.
    I'd also be interested to hear about the other cultural changes that happened in Japanese society at this time. I know a lot of what is considered modern Japanese cuisine originated in the Meiji Era, like for example Tonkatsu, which is basically just a schnitzel or dressed pork chop Japanized, since before the Meiji Restoration meat eating moved between being frowned upon and illegal in Japan.

    • @GothGlitch93
      @GothGlitch93 3 місяці тому +1

      Japan understood that ones culture is in how one does something. Not the substance.

      Learning more about it breaks the idea that it was all sunshine and roses, it's fascinating to see all the hurdles that came with it, but that could be said in any golden era of any nation. What they did is still a magnificent feat nonetheless

    • @GothGlitch93
      @GothGlitch93 3 місяці тому +1

      @@madensmith7014 And you can still see it in the culture of each nation. Japan continually innovates, while trying to stay as closed as possible. And china is STILL catching up to japan, hundreds of years later.

    • @yuyoshida7359
      @yuyoshida7359 3 місяці тому

      Ironic thing is that Tonkatsu is based on French ‘côtelettes’ or ‘cutlets’ in English, so it isn’t directly related to Schnitzels at all

    • @michaelthayer5351
      @michaelthayer5351 3 місяці тому

      @@yuyoshida7359 yeah, I said dressed pork chops. Townsends has a few videos about 18th century dressed pork chops or cutlets that show those earlier recipes that inspired tonkatsu and other katsu dishes. But schnitzel is also a related recipe and is closest to modern tonkatsu, since their both fried.
