it is completely true, that's how problem solvers think - find a way how to deal with problem before accounting for numbers
I was always taught as a controls technician start easy move to harder. Think of the dumbest easiest reasons something could be the way it is slowly working your way to more complex.
@@captsploof oooh!! I have to practice thinking like this again!! Usually Im like in the original comment, but some shit really isn't that complex!
But how?
@@khadijaayman2916 There are 2 ways, the easiest one is to get familiar with the pattern for a particular problem and then learn many patterns like that to choose from. The second one is incredibly hard - invent a new solution for a problem. I'd suggest reading book Framing, it really changed my perception of problem-solving
In the mid-1990s, I tried taking the required algebra course at my university. I kept getting points taken off of my problem-solving. I met with the TA and asked why. She told me I needed to be using the current system of problem-solving. I asked her, 'Why does it matter how I get the right answer as long as I can prove how I got there?' The TA said that was how the class was set up. I looked at her, 'So, you're telling me that if Albert Einstein was in the class? You would take points off because he'd be using an older system?' The TA paused, then said, 'Yes.' I dropped the class.
how did you do?
I have a feeling this didn't happen and you're lying,

@@tusheyy6033, it ended up that I couldn't return for my senior year. I spent a long time paying off that student loan. A few years ago, I looked into returning and discovered that my university had added a lot of new requirements. It was also suggested that I should switch one of my majors. I would be attending for another two years. I'm considering taking one course per semester since I no longer care how long it takes. As for that algebra course? You should know there was almost a twenty-year gap between taking algebra in high school and university. I did much better in Geometry in high school. In fact, I loved it. I'm checking out options for online Algebra classes for people like me who need help relearning the subject.
is that so... i wish you the best!@@CindersVale
I seriously respect my math and logic teacher professor because this is exactly the way he teaches. First he starts teaching how to problem solve in big terms, and your thought process through breaking down a problem and understanding what each part of your process is
I remember when I transferred from a local uni to one of the top uni’s in the country and this exact idea was the distinction between the two. When I was being asked conceptual questions I was dumbfounded since I was only taught how to do algorithms without even applying it to word problems until I transferred it was overwhelming.
Yes to much focus on student “plugging and chugging” numbers into formulas instead of understanding the process of the formula. Once one aspect of the formula changes them they are struggling to understand the way it works overall

agree 100% percent, studying math in university right now, and the only thing that helped build deeper understanding and spark motivation/curiosity, is to see it in action. personally for me, that meant spending hours on desmos playing with different equations and comparing them side by side. the visual component really reeled me in
Can you explain it further?like how do you play with different equations?
Read the solved guide book. R.D Sharma has solved problems of different types. Understand how they came at the conclusion. Then try to solve questions
Thank you
YESSSSS EXACTLY! EXACTLY! NO INE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE! I THOUGHT I WAS A DUMBASS BUT NO! After I figured it out myself my literally READING maths textbooks and started reading equations my life has become sooo easy~~~so easy that I am doing physics in grad school which I have never ever dreamt even in my wildest dream😂
YOURE LYINGGGGG IM GONNA TRY THIS, what do you suggest for trig or calculus?
Physics just uses high school math. It's kind of shocking how uneducated kids are these days.
I think there is just never enough time to adequately explain the material AND practice it in the class room. Nowadays especially people are either getting rid of homework or just not doing it. Which when learning equations practice is imperative. Teachers have to waste time going over practice problems in class, or just going over the steps repeatedly instead of actually teaching the concept and reason behind it. It was embarrassingly long after I learned Pyhtag Theorum that I realized squares were based off of actual squares. I was given 0 context for anything.
When you think maths while practicing it, is not neceseary do 197374 exercies to get it...
You sir just described my relationship with math, hated it thought I was bad at it all my life. Then suddenly took the time understood the story behind the formulas, what are they intended to do.. and voila I’m in love
i agree with what you've said. Math is almost never thought in a way where people would even have a choice to choose from if they wanted to attend that class or where they want to stop chasing progression in math, espeically in highschool or unis.
It's easier for me to go back to school after dropping out of it because i know why im going back, and with better understanding and interest behind it all.
if you treat math like a language where you also need to practice it to retain it, you already know where and how and why you gonna use it and study it, nobody in school will force you to learn japanese, or german, or french, unless you are from those respective countries, and you can choose them as a side subject, you can't do that with math. and it's frustrating for those who do not want it and disrespectful to those who want to know more about it and advance faster.
Could we have a whole video on this
Where you elaborate
It would be helpful as you've explained how to recall ideas in the most efficient way
But that doesn't quite work in maths as it's more dependant on how you grasp harder concepts of maths that aren't easily intuitive.
It would be great if you just illustrated whatever ideas you have briefly mentioned in larger video thanks.
In computer science course, mostly regarding algorithms but it was used for everything, we had this thing called "explaining the intuition". Basically the person knowing the solution would explain in a simple way how they figured it out and how and why it all works in an intuitive way. That way you don't need to have innate intuition to understand it and gain intuition and be able to apply it next time you need it. Imho if you find some math problems less intuitive, meaning you don't have some innate intuition for them, your teacher or book should be the ones responsible of making it intuitive enough that you can grasp it. It is a bit of an ideal more than reality though, I guess.
@@tymondabrowski12 yea it's always the struggle with maths as things get more complicated, how should we make the abstractions needed in different contexts to make it intuitive for our minds. So we apply the correct procedure to solve maths questions.
Its funny Maths doesn't necessarily require a high IQ, it more or less requires us to find the right approach after realising the context. Which always seems impossible for most of us trying to comprehend Maths.
My math skills improved significantly after I switched from attending school teachers maths class to coaching. Sometimes the problem is not you, it's the teacher.
I know exactly what you mean. I discovered math was much easier to learn and retain when I had to use it in chemistry and physics because the concepts had context. Versus in school you are just taught here’s an equation and here are the procedures to “solve”. Part of my job now requires taking apart software to understand how things work and to do it effectively you have to understand the ecosystem the software operates in. You don’t retain much if you just read manuals, you need to observe and programmatically interact with components to gain a deep understanding. What’s happening here is that making multiple connections with a piece of information through experimentation helps to “connect the dots” and absorb the information which is what I believe wasn’t happening in the majority of my math classes lol. Not that I didn’t do well, but I believe I could have had an easier time if it things weren’t so bland.
Wildly helpful, thank you so much! I didn't understand why I struggled with math at some times and others didn't. It's the understanding of WHY I'm doing what I'm doing. Ie linear equations and graphing were annoying and I didn't understand the point until I started thinking of it like a map and doing forensic work to discover the location of something on the grid.
should i send this to the friend who used to give me strange looks and 'who even reads thattt??'s when she saw me reading the conceptss of maths
It takes time
yess
It's the difference between applied math and proof-based math. It depends on the need for different kind of skillsets in different areas.
My brain shut down when he started talking😵💫
I have listened to so many math videos, that i am surprised that i understand this short although it sounds so un-understandable xD
I know that when I started learning proof writing my skills with math increased a lot. When you have to sit down and prove the mathematics you use in calculations and would otherwise take for granted it makes it stick in your brain for a lot LONGER.
Please it would be awesome if you made a whole video on math learning.
I don't know how to use the minimap for math 😢
Or any other techniques
Pleaseeeeeeeee.
Oh I see so like put it into context ?
Great video!
I remember failing a statistics exam 3 times in a row, in the 2nd module, they explained that a regression equation from the first module might be used to help a farmer desire how many cows and chickens to buy, and then I got an A in both exams.
Very true though..sometimes my sister says the same thing and DOES the same thing..shes so good at maths..i need a calculator and her? She can do thousand's and crore's calculations within 2 mintues just in her mind..and about solving problems she always gives me this advice cuz i am bad at maths... 😅😅
bro you are explaining to complex way ....thankgod i found a indian teacher to explain the same in easy way
Thank you man
this dude is talking on a whole new level of math
Casually watching how to study math instead of actually studying it
isnt what this guy's video talking about? We should learn first how to tackle a problem before actually engaging on it. Like what we are doing. To effectively understand math we watched videos like this one on how to understand math. Kinda confusing but you get my point.
What heard from this video was that, a cat can eat a shark and the photosynthesis from a bird is venous to the end piece of a loaf of bread. Learnt a lot from this video
I’ve been saying this FOREVER…not articulated nearly as well
Ok sir. I have learned the definition 😂😂😂

Their ages are probably below 100 years old and above 1 year😅
Thank you so much
So true,
Yes!!
So true
the subject known as math relies on procedural and conditional aspects (idk what it means)
• _in cheap language_ , learn the definitions and its importance, and gain a deep understanding of the concepts from there.
• utilise interleaved retrieval to master the procedural component
• teaching methods mightn't address some declarative aspects, so personal and practical effort is necessary to fill the void
• aim to approach a problem using concepts in the beginning almost intuitively, than trying to use formulas, which is cheap.
-> Prioritize understanding the concepts behind equations and formulas before memorizing procedures.
The way you word this is like a math word problem that I'm failing at lol.
*By actually doing math
Edit:
Approaching it conceptually definitely is important. For calculus, realizing the significance of dx, dy or dtheta was big. dx means the change in x. For dy, dz or d anything, swap the out the x for whatever variable you’re solving for.
Integrating dx, you’re taking the area along the x axis from x0 to x1. Integrating dy, you’re taking the area from y0 to y1. Integrating with respect to theta, you’re taking the area from angle 1 to angle 2, so like a slice.
Of course there’s underlying theory you need to know prior to this is if you don’t know any calculus but this is something that really helped integrals click and understand how to set them up.
I am math teacher when I teach this way students love learning maths and give a great feedback but other teachers with old traditional teaching method keeps bullying my way of teaching.
This is the issue. Exactly this is why so many math teachers fail.
I have Adhd, and I always question why should I solve this problem?
Why do teachers give me this homework? Now, I love math even it is really hard for me and everyone else.
Pls can you drop the link to the complete video ?
I need to learn calculus to understand what he is saying

Which book can I read to solve the problem
I have to point out in my opinion you cant learn anything without this. I am a an avid learner i buy courses to better my jobs. I went from a fabricator(metals) to machinist to supervising machinist to welder to welding trainer to team leader to shift supervisor to maintenance. technician to controls technician. In the course of 7 years with only a vocational school in high school.
I learn significantly faster than a lot of people due to this right here, what am i doing and why am i doing it. It becomes my motivation :)

You know it’s reliable when an Asian is speaking
I can't understand what you are saying can you explain it with examples(can it be more clear)
But i don't think these will help in solving jee advanced level math problems.
Exact thought I had, this is pretty good advice up until highschool. In Uni, you need to grasp and digest quickly because even if you understand how things work there isn't enough time in exam to essentially "work out" the solution.
i have some experience in higher math, and i think this advice goes well beyond JEE. It's not that JEE isn't hard but it's not *advanced*. In my experience learning math (especially, algebra, topology, etc.), having an intuitive, informal understanding of things is how you know you actually get it.
I don't agree. As the person above says, imho that's the key to be able to solve problems and to do it quickly enough. I've been on a uni course where 50% of everything was basically advanced math, and I don't think I'd get such high grades of I didn't understand what's going on and just tried to apply formulas.
Understanding is forever (well somewhat), but to remember it without understanding I'd have to specifically learn it and then I could still forget it when needed. Makes no sense to rely on your memory only. Also why would I ever learn anything by remembering equations without understanding? Isn't it pointless? Isn't it the exact reason you go to school, to learn useful things? If you don't understand it, how can it be useful? Also Isn't it boring? (I must admit I had trouble learning things I needed to know by heart - like theory for theoretical exams - when I understood them, so I wasn't, in my mind, learning anything new... but learning it to know by heart without understanding sounds even worse).
Ok but the last point he said is very accurate. Jee advanced questions is all about approach
I’m on the autism spectrum, and I can say I’m not a math genius.

Shouldn't teachers be making it easier for us to succeed? No one has ever told me what y*x=m+c equals, so why am I learning something no ones ever taught me, I didn't even know that letters are numbers like what number is A or M? so confusing for my simple mind.
Yup. Text books will teach you how to approach the subject. But my dumb brain cant comprehend
My advice to all those who struggling to study is
Go and study 📖 😂
normal asain keed
Can you please stop referring to calculation as mathematics? What you should be saying here is that one should study mathematics in order to understand how to apply it in calculations. This is a none-trivial distinction. The misconception maths = calculation shouldn't be reproduced by educators.
Its similiar to stating that building a car is engaging is physics.
So my critique isnt that your message here isnt correct, but that it isnt correct enough.
I think he'e referring to the idea itself that math itself is 'taught ' as calculation where they just teach the rules without having a conceptual understanding of where the tools come and how to use them as a general fact and rule for a lot of the topics.... idk if that made sense 😭
where does he say calculation is mathematics?
he said calculus not calculation
I'm all too aware but HOW TF DO I LEARN HOW TO APPROACH PROBLEMS NO ONE TEACHES IT LIKE TFF
For example you can use step decomposition method 1) break problem into parts 2) go deeper on fundamentals 3) bring together pieces and solve problems, BUT INORDER TO BREAK PROBLEM INTO PARTS AND TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE APPROACHING PROBLEM IN RIGHT WAY YOU HAVE TO GET DEEPER
“CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING” like before even jumping to formulas and numerical just try to understand and relate what the concepts actually are how formulas are derived and how this concept might be related to concept of other chapters
Also, while solving problems we can use bunch of cognitive skills such as deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, metacognition etc. consciously (like many times, when the problems are presented to us, we are not even sure how to approach the problem from where we should start )
This is true about math up until you get to proof based mathematics. Ie anything after calculus.
That's exactly what I thought.... Maths is being CRAMMED... Just going through equations won't do unless u understand what it means
Twaght
