This video will show you how to act drunk. You will learn how to use grapes to slur your words and how to perform like you are tipsy, drunk, plastered and inebriated.
These lessons are based on a chapter from Uta Hagen's book "Respect for Acting", which is available here: amzn.to/3jBUVMf
This series focuses on how to perform believable behaviors and conditions. Behaviors include things like yawning, burping, drinking or being drunk. Conditions include situations the character finds themselves in, like having a heart attack, dying, being hot or cold or fatigued. Each of these requires the actor to utilize their own sense memory of these behaviors/conditions or to drum up substitutions for those situations when they haven't experienced a behavior.

Another example I use to act drunk is sleep deprivation, if you’ve ever pulled an all-nighter you get kinda loopy and your coordination isn’t the best.
That’s great but it effects your entire performance. If you only need to play drunk in one scene (which is usually the case) you then have the rest of a show/shoot to have to pretend to be sober (or not sleep deprived). But this technique is good for anyone who hasn’t ever been drunk to feel a similar experience.

I am a drama student at a university based in London. I'm currently doing a play called Constellations, written by Nick Payne. I play the character of Roland. There is a scene in there where I am drunk. I'm a Christian. I have never drunken alcohol in my life and I shouldn't. This video comes in real handy. Thanks, AA 😁👍🏾
Glad the video is helpful. Yeah, there's a lot of things we have to play as actors that we may never have or never will experience, so it's always a good thing when we can learn from someone who has experienced it

(Also yes I saw the comment about sleep deprivation, I don’t sleep a lot anyway though and while sometimes people comment on it looking like I’m drunk, it doesn’t happen often)
The sleep deprivation is more of a way to experience some similar sensations to being drunk. I would not recommend depriving yourself of sleep to actually perform a role. But I'm glad you found some useful info in the video. Ultimately in a show like Clue, playing drunk will be a little more heightened than playing a drunk in a serious drama so you can probably have fun with it. Just remember that there are lots of subtle things that a drunk person does to try to appear NOT drunk. It's almost like it's funnier if you are slurring your speech and stumbling and trying not to let it show. Break legs in the role!

Same here. It’s tough to play something you’ve never experienced before honestly, but with careful observation you can do it. I would say that most people who play heroin addicts or people who do heavy psychedelic drugs have never actually done those drugs themselves. But there is information out there to study and people that can be observed who have done them. Btw, how did you feel about your performance in the movie?
@@AugmentedActor yeah the director had me watch clips of other teenagers on like Instagram and UA-cam who were drunk to get a feel for what was going on. I think i did fairly well! I had to do multiple takes to get it right but my co stars were fantastic in supporting me! Luckily the critics didn’t tear m apart so honestly thats a win for me.
(Btw this is like an undercover account so I can watch interviews of me and my friends about our movies haha. This popped up on my recommended and I wanted to see if there was anything I missed from my performance a few years ago. You might have even seen the movie I did it in!)
Oh well, now I’m super curious about this movie and your secret identity. I don’t expect you to blow your secret but I may need to hire a private detective to find out. Jk. Haha.

Hey AA. So minutes after posting my previous comment, I tried it. It really worked, man. But it was also a temporarily horrible experience. I spun really fast, I couldn't keep my balance and even though I stopped spinning, everything else still was and my head started to hurt a little bit and I started feeling hungry as well. Now, I am going to learn my lines of that scene and have lunch. Thanks, bro 👍🏾
Yeah be careful, but actually what you described does sound a lot like the experience of being very drunk. The trick now is to be able to replicate that feeling in a safe and responsible way on stage without having to spin around or actually get dizzy. It's more about remember the behaviors that came as a result of the spinning. Best of luck.

I have to play Juliet (as a drunk man) in a Shakespearean farce. During rehearsals I am finding it difficult to remember my lines whilst concentrating acting in an inebriated state.
That sounds like an awesome version of the show. Hope this video helps you tackle the new interpretation. Best thing is to get the drunk part down pat and then layer the lines in on top.That way you can learn the lines as drunk versions.
This helps so much!! I'm in high school and im doing a scene in my advanced acting class and I have to play a mother who is a drunk. And I've never been drunk before so this gives me an idea and want to think about.
It's hard to know how to play something you haven't yet experienced. So I'm glad the video helps a little.

That's a great example! I'm a little bit the opposite. I'm good at playing sober even though I'm incredibly drunk. ;-)

I personally don't really act particularly unusual when I am drunk, however I have noticed that I tend to become really mellow, and start giggling a llittle bit at random things.
It is kind of like a "sedated" state, where I just sit back and feel super-pleased with everything, and start showing very proud body language and making slow movements.
That is a common state for drunk people. There are several stages people tend to go through when drinking. Usually they become social and laughing and outgoing for a period and then quiet and sedated and then if they keep going it usually gets loud and sloppy. While your experience of drunkenness may work for some characters, often directors want to see a slightly more elevated "drunk" as it adds more dynamics to a scene and lets the audience know the character is drunk. So you'll have to use the powers of observation and mimicry of others whenever you need to play one of those types of characters.

I like to do something like how Seth MacFarlane does when he acts drunk, he tends to studder a bit, and how a couple actresses I worked with that call for an intoxicated character, I like to burp, hiccup, and laugh and talk at the same time.
All great ideas for adding color and nuance to a drunken performance. Thanks for sharing.

I put a non-alcoholic drink in a wine glass, took a picture of it and send it to a few guys(and of course drink it) and im waiting for their responses. One of those guys is my best friends and i just want to prank him really hard.
