  • Under consumption is currently trending on TikTok, and you KNOW I had to talk about this movement. In this video, I discuss what it's all about, why it's popular, how similar it is tho the 'de-influencing' trend from a couple months ago, and if I am optimistic that this trend will continue and move the needle in terms of over consumption and the climate crisis. Let's discuss! This is a big topic, so I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. I'm currently on a makeup low-buy and I'm curating my collection and talking all things minimalism & decluttering, and project pan.

    I’m pessimistic that this will just turn into another form of consuming. Now everyone will use underconsumption as an excuse to go hunt for that “perfect” item that will be the single forever thing…

      if you successfully sell your old item to someone else, i think it's fine to buy an upgraded item, as long as it's not a neverending cycle. like my water bottle was okay but i realized i would drink more if i had one with a straw, so i got one secondhand. the trick is to not be tempted by aesthetic upgrades, imo

    My hobby is to watch project pan videos and i have been doing so for the last 4 years. Even though i have gained a lot of underconsumption knowledge that I appreciate, I know that if I wasn’t watching beauty related content in general my makeup collection would be for sure smaller. However, I am happy to support underconsumption. Yesterday I was craving to buy a red cream blush and I used a red liquid lipstick as cream blush instead. So i really hope that underconsumption will be more known in the future

    But I am so happy that underconsumption became a trend at all! And a lot of people started project panning because of it, so that’s great :)

    I love that in some countries people just worry if everything is tidy and clean if they have someone over. Me and my husband always have everything ready to have guests, because sometimes we find a friend in the street and invite them over, or if I am alone and a fix-it gent comes over, I will call a male friend to stop by. We have a specific corner of our pantry cupboard dedicated to food that we offer when we have someone over. The house is always clean and tidy. We don't have clothes that we use just inside the house. We hang out in street clothes. It's fun to see that that is not the case for everyone.

    Cute hairstyle and eyeshadow! I definitely was influenced to buy certain makeup items and to have a “ collection” in the first place by UA-cam. I think clothes not so much, but tend not to buy much. It’s been refreshing to find the project pan community, and I tend to skip videos about hauling new makeup. I still struggle between wanting to downsize but want to try new products, currently on a makeup no buy

    • @laralikesmascara
      @laralikesmascara  11 днів тому +1

      I think I get more fashion influence from Instagram these days that UA-cam, but UA-cam is definitely what influences me makeup-wise as well! And I think that's a constant struggle, I am still tempted by new releases :)

    I used to not hit pan on my makeup either before I got into project paning on youtube. I recently saw someone complaining about people using "expired" makeup and calling it "underconsumption" but the pictures they showed of the "expired" makeup were all powder products (eyeshadows, blush, powders,etc.) that had pan on them, like there wasn’t any mold or something the looked fine.
    I agree with you, I think it’s kind of refreshing to see normal consumption and but unfortunately I don’t think it’s not going have that much of an impact on tiktok’s content and overconsumption in general…

    • @laralikesmascara
      @laralikesmascara  11 днів тому

      Yeah I think 'expired' makeup is kind of subjective LOL

    • @lisalis5877
      @lisalis5877 11 днів тому

      I agree and of course if it smells bad, breaks you out, etc. throw it away. But I don’t see any reason to throw away something just because it has pan when it’s otherwise fine. Lol I also feel like some brands play it extremely save with the recommended shelf life and of course they want you to replace things more quickly for example the abh modern renaissance had a recommended shelf life of 6 months! ☠️

    i think it's an interesting trend bc the only way to participate online right now is to have been living this lifestyle for years. so unlike a lot of other trends, even if people are inspired to start consuming less from now on, they wouldn't be able to make a video "showing off" an underconsumption lifestyle until years in the future. so i think that will dissuade a lot of people from joining the bandwagon bc there is no hope of quick pay-off

    I assume the chance that any tiktok trend will lead to more conscious anything are slim... But hopefully it inspires people to love what they own more. Social media made me start to hate the word aesthetic 😂it's so insanely overused! people are broken records where the word has lost all meaning. Everyone is just trying to make the meaningless nonsense we spend our days with sound profound and much more important than it is.

    Ppl are still consuming to much if it isnt makeup, its hygiene or clothing or whatever is popular then. A customers i talk to saying shes mimimlist because her place is small and she has kids. But if ppl want stuff they always find was to make room

    I def struggle with buying too many clothes, sometimes shoes, and some makeup, but thankfully have grown out of collecting the aesthetic instead of having what I want and use, bc if I can't use it, I don't want it, I want the feeling. My achilles' heels within my makeup collection, in order, are-
    Eyeshadow: I have over 350 individual shades, either in palettes or as singles. I don't have a problem with buying them anymore (no buy since 2023 going strong!), but I'll need to separate them into purchased vs PR/affiliate credit so I can prioritize which ones to pan (that I spent my $ on).
    Lips: I lived abroad this year and bought too many 🙈 and my tastes have changed. Already separated purchased vs PR and am barreling through glosses!
    Blush: I am so light handed with blush, so while I have a smaller amount of these... 😬 Never ever hit pan even on ones I've had for five years! Haven't bought new since 2022.
    Other products I don't have an issue finishing or hoarding 😅 finished my Maybelline Fit Me loose powder from 2018 this year!

    • @laralikesmascara
      @laralikesmascara  11 днів тому

      oh man 350 is so many shades! Honestly I only think about eyeshadow in terms of palettes, so I actually have no idea how many individual shades I have. And damn never hit pan on blush!? You should just focus on one for the rest of the year and see how it goes :)

      @@laralikesmascara yeah I realized I have hit pan on blush! Only cream blush, no powder yet - I hit major pan and then a month later it dried out, but it was mostly gone by then. I only had two blushes with me for the past six months and I still didn't get close 😂 I want to finish this one liquid blush this year, am about 1/4 down the bottle and it's not one I figured out how to use best until recently. And yeah the eyeshadow is wild. A lot of it was free from when I was in PR programs for indie brands, but I don't have the capacity for that anymore. It's just making my hobby stressful. So I'm out! But enjoying what I've got.

    I think most ppl (not influencers) are in between the two. Essentially all of those are just good marketing and trying to sell you something-even clean and cruelty free are overused. Been trying to limit being on social media because doesn't make me happy anymore. Although im just not going to keep makeup much past expiration dates either since they can cause acne or cause irritation to my eyes.

      I think it depends on if products are powders or creams/liquids. I am much more relaxed on technically ‘expired’ products than most people, but I go off of if the products has changed or has a weird scent.
