Ok. I hated the finale. It was rushed, it felt wrong to the characters. And I feel that Sidney betrayed Charlotte by taking away her choice and telling her afterwards that he is to marry his ex. Like this conversation with Miss Lambe was quite on point. What he has done? Not what he's done. He said. But words remain just words.

They seriously need to bring this back for another season - their chemistry was extraordinary! This was so gorgeous.
The only thing about the finale that made me happy was Babington finally getting Esther. The whole thing about Sydney and Charlotte was just painful to watch, I keep getting my hopes up and then I got crushed again. This is really only acceptable if there is a second season. Too many open ends.
People are angry with Sidney for choosing money over love but I don't see it that way at all. The difference between Eliza and Sidney is that SHE once choose money over love for herself whilst HE does that to help his family. It is not for himself. Charlotte has changed him, made him a better man who- unlike the man he was- thinks of his family first instead of his own needs and wishes. Yes, Charlotte is heartbroken but so is he. Again! I feel for him as I do for Charlotte...
I feel like we are only half way in on this story, things will turn out right in a second season for sure. Mr Andrew Davies knows Jane Austen's way of finishing a story very well.,he will do her justice. And Charlotte &Sidney. (And all of us!) He better!!!
Yes, you can sacrifice yourself and your own happiness but not somebody else. He does not have right to sacrifice Charlotte's happiness as well. It is not decent to Eliza too. To marry her just for her money not loving her is a disgrace and Charlotte was very bold about this despite her broken heart. He told him: you should make her happy.
@@LoveMusic-nq7pi You are right: it is not fair. Not at all. But keep in mind that in those days this was considerd to be "normal". Family came first. Always. A lot of hearts were broken in that era because of money. (As Jane knew but all too wel)
But.... there is still hope: Sidney is not married yet!!!! Maybe lady Susan will comes to the rescue. Or perhaps Georgiana, who kinda hates all that money of hers because it attrackts the wrong type of men.( She could also fall in love with Arthur and if HE can find the currage to break free from his sister and marry her EVERYTHING gets solved.) Georgiana knows Charlotte loves Sidney but has no idea of his feelings or the mess he is in.
What will she do when she finds out? Oh, so many different plotlines to choose from! And as for Eliza, she does not deserve Sidney anymore. Not his affection. First the money and now also the man as a bonus? No, that will not do. She can't have it all. It is time she has a little heartache of her own. What comes around....

Sidney's greatest virtue of not being afraid of making sacrifices for his family ultimately turned against him and put him out of the way to his own happiness, which would have been marrying Charlotte, the woman who made him feel whole again and turn away from the lie he believed that he was destined to remain alone... I still have the hope the series finally gets to a second season, or at least a longer, special episode, where we can see evertything solved... Sidney and Charlotte deserve to be happy after everything they've suffered...
Beautiful love story. It deserves a happily ever after ending. One that Jane Austen would approve of. Episode 8 is heartbreaking.
Ep 1 of Season 2, even more so. I'm so disheartened by the direction they've decided to go in.
The only way I see they can change it around in the second series is if in the first episode miss lamb is angry at Sidney during the preparations for the wedding that he has hurt her dear friend Charlotteand argues with him, but he unexpectedly shows her a display of passion and misery that he cannot be with Charlotte that he loves her but he has a duty to his family to help them and that this is the only way he has found. Then miss lamb in shock, and who can now see that he truly does love Charlotte decides to intercede to help her friend and says she shall give the £80,000 that is needed. (She will still be rich with £20,000 - Mr Darcy only had £10,000!) He argues that as his ward he cannot accept it, but starts to feel hope which shows in his eyes. Eventually it is accepted and he goes to Eliza to apologise, she slaps him around the face haha! Sorry Sidney! Then at the end of the episode 1 we see Sidney walking through the countryside towards Charlotte's home beside his horse. He spots her playing with her brother and sisters in the grass, dirt on her dress, wild hair, laughing just like the first episode of series 1; and he displays a little smile while watching her, feeling joy at seeing her again. Then her younger siblings shout out who is that man, pointing, and she turns to see him in shock. They lock eyes and that is the end of episode 1. Anticipation for the rest of the series!!
I suspect her father will be angry with Sidney and not want her to marry him! He will have to work hard to get her back!

Ummmm...who must I speak with to ensure that you write the script for season 2? That would be absolutely perfect and completely believable! It could also be Lady Susan that offers to help...considering she is very rich, and cares about Charlotte's happiness, and was interested in their romance.

Her sweetness... and his complete difficult to put his love before everyone and everything. But, he still really loves her... and as he's "much improved", I hope to see this real improvement in the next season ❤ Oh come on Sidney! You love her. Just do what has to be done!

@@mujercitaok Yes! Her father told her to be careful of everything. Ms. Lambe told her not to trust him. There are so many more phrases and situations that point to this ending.
That is why we need another ending ,a season2 thinking back even Esher warns her about Sidney in the first episode and foresee Tom going bankrupt.

I agree, it is not that they had to end up together, but I wanted Sidney to be a bit more distraught over giving up a chance at not marrying Charlotte, divorce was incredibly rare, if it was legal at this time, I know the Divorce Act wasn't for approx 50 years. I think if the wife ran off you could get a divorce, but it was very narrow ability for divorce if it was legal in the regency. Also why did Charlotte not write to Lady Susan, she would probably offered her a place to stay etc etc.. I wanted her to be going to London etc.. building on her time at Sanditon not simply going back to her fathers house. She could have sought a post as a governess for goodness sake.

I think the finale was only acceptable if another season has been locked in. Even then I would have liked a bit more Charlotte and Sidney happy and in love time before the fire. The ending didn't do Sidney any favours either - all about his feelings and concern Charlotte would think badly of him. Plus why would he do to Charlotte what Eliza did to him? And why did Sidney have to sacrifice everything for Tom? And why wasn't Tom's wife even angry about the no insurance stuff up? Rose Williams was great though:)

Tom's wife (Mary) also irritated me at the end of that episode. She knew that Sidney and Charlotte was in love, but she was still willing to let Sidney marry Eliza just to save her husband and her financial security. She was more than willing to put Charlotte on that stage coach home and tell her she hopes Charlotte doesn't regret her time in Sanditon. Some friend.
Yeah, it’s like so far we only see what Sidney has said, but not done. It has to be mended in season 2

You’re right it was so hypocritical of him to do that to Charlotte like BOY you literally started hating on women because of what one woman did to you and then... you turn around and do the same thing. This is so heartbreakingly beautiful. Just the perfect, absolutely perfect, choice of song and clips.
Is there a love button? this is fabulous, even though is breaks my heart all over again. Charlotte is the best character in the show and yet she suffers the most, as love does not conquer class, money and prejudice in the end. I even hate Sydney, for hurting her in such a cruel way and abandonig her as if she meant so little. Please don't pity him, he will go off to marry the elegant, rich widow he spent a decade obsessing about, so it is no hardship. I hope Charlotte heals and moves on. I would like to see another season of these two, but if I were Charlotte I would take my time before forgiving him if this is even possible.
I honestly don't get how people are accusing Sidney of choosing money over love. He chose his family. He broke his own heart first. Time and time again he tried to help his brother and he was accused of not doing enough (by Charlotte as well). They left his bother and his family's fate on his hands and he did the only thing he could. In no way what he did is the same as what was done to him. Cause he didn't do it for himself. I am miserable for them both. And i am so angry that his brother didn't even care enough to realize Sidney loved Charlotte. While his wife knew how heartbroken they were and she did nothing. Tom honestly disgusted me.
This is so sad, so beautifully sad. I can’t believe ITV have done this to them in a single episode after eight weeks of building them up!
Even if there is another series, how can Charlotte forgive Sidney for what he did? I get he was doing it for his brother but am I meant to accept he cares so little for Charlotte he could sit back and watch her heart break like that?! Especially after how he was rejected for money by Eliza the first time and now he has done the same thing to Charlotte! All he had to do was stop the carriage, tell Charlotte he doesn’t love her and can’t marry her, that they can find another way, they kiss and that is all!
Everyone knows that in Austen, the heroine always ends up with the guy because it is what she deserves! They make each other better and are rewarded with a HAPPY ending...not driving off crying in a carriage! This just feels so wrong.

Isn't it a bit unfair to crucify Sidney over this? Like everyone is downplaying the severity of Tom's situation. Sidney couldn't in good conscience let that happen to his brother if it was within his power to save him (and Mary and the kids). Tom did the same thing for Sidney once, too, when Sidney was at his lowest point. If he'd refused to do this it would actually make him look worse. And Charlotte would've pushed him to do it if he couldn't make the choice himself.
The Post Grad Life I think the one who takes it worse is Sidney. His heart broke a second time. and he is doomed to live with a woman he does not love and is a horrible person. Charlotte is young, she can fall in love again.
Audrey yeah you are right, I am most mad at Tom for putting his brother in that situation! I have to believe that Tom doesn’t know the extent of Sidney’s feelings for Charlotte and if there’s a second series then that could be explored more. There has to be other options that Sidney marrying Eliza!

I actually quite like the last part where Sidney told Charlotte he hoped she doesn’t think too badly of him. Ironically, in episode 2, the same dialogue was uttered by Charlotte

Ok, is it just me but when Sidney rode up to her carriage I really thought he was going to say he’d made a huge mistake and profess his love to Charlotte. Instead he just wants to know if she thinks badly of him. What??? Come on, Sidney! And Charlotte, I’m assuming being brave, says she doesn’t. Such a lie! I wanted her to scream at him “You broke my heart! No, I don’t think you’re the greatest guy right now. And look- I get that you want to save your brother, but he’s made one terrible choice after another. Let him figure it out. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your entire life and live with that wretched woman just to save your brother’s ass!” Ok, I know JA would never use the word “ass”, but I’m just really frustrated and needed to vent. There had better be a season 2- Jane Austen would never approve of such a disagreeable ending...
Sadie Bowman i agree but the fact that Charlotte was the one that told him to care/help more for his brother makes that counterintuitive. In a way, he was also doing it because she made him a better man.

Jane Austen doesn't always write a happy endings, sometimes wicked characters are quite happily off too. It's not the bad end poorly and the good happily.

Ok, so I guess in a possible second season, Susan from London might come to Charlotte's rescue again? I really can't see how Charlotte could forgive Sidney no matter what happens. Stringer might meet Charlotte again and convince her to give him a chance...which brings to mind Lady Denham's words about it being better to be loved than to love, in a marriage.
And what about the despicable Tom Parker, that relentless gambler and financial black hole? Interesting that his sister is as parasitic toward Arthur as he is toward Sidney.

I saw the series in internet ( i live in Italy) and really loved it up to the finale which made me crazy. too many things unsolved: Charlotte who leaves Sanditon without even saying goodbye to Ms Lamb nor informing Lady Susan bout the "tragic" ending of her romance. Even the very last meeting is a sort of betrayal: he stops the carriage and you believe he finally changed his mind but then what? he only wants to be sure she does not think too badly of him... ??Jane Austen would NEVER end up like that, unless the real love to be someone else, like a Colonel Brandon. but there's none like that in the series. the point is: are the authors waiting for the feedback from the public to start with the season 2? if so, it would take at least 1 year for the second season to be released..and why i cannot find ANY interview with Theo James about his character?? i found many of them with Rose Williams along with other actors, but none with Theo. quite strange from my point of you.
anyway i imagine the new season starting in London, with an unexpecting meeting between Sidney, sad and unhappy due to his unhappy marriage and charlotte, paying a visit to her friend Lady Susan. this last trying to introduce her dearest friend in to the society. Charlotte disappointed from how bad he turned into: drunk, light minded, only the shadow of the man she felt in love with. he mad about his misfortune and hangry with her for she tries to make up her life without him. they would start their "fight" again, to finally find themselves in love again.
What is the song you used? I really love this video and I am so sad about the ending. But remaining positive and hopeful that we get a second season!

That ending was a hot mess. There needs to be a season 2 . Austen provides happily ever afters and this ending does not fit the Austen brand. Between the ending of GOT and this I'm so done getting caught up in TV shows.
Why didn’t Miss Lamb’s inheritance play into saving Sanditon. She could have invested in Sanditon to help a friend, Charlotte. She could have made a deal with Sydney: her investing money in exchange for him allowing her to marry the man she loved. Why didn’t Charlotte ask that rich lady she became friends with for investment in Sanditon. Stupid ending meant only to add drama for the main couple.
If Tom learned that his brother was losing love (twice in his life now) he should feel ashamed. His mismanagement of money has just continued and continued. Where are the consequences for his actions? He should not be allowed to handle the money for Sanditon anymore.
I'm not loving the idea of a young black woman, daughter of a former slave, bailing out irresponsible Tom Parker and his enabling brother Sidney. Sidney kept feeding Tom with money to prop up his scheme until it destroyed his own happiness. Lady Denham was right to call him despicable. But, you know what they say about ill-gotten gains: proceeds of slavery.
xy11xy I understand. It’s just like in the major plot of the show Miss Lamb didn’t have anything to do with the plot. She wasn’t active in her own fate. So seeing her come to Sydney and take charge by using her wealth against him by striking a deal to marry the man she wants would have been nice. Overall she was a poorly handled character. She was merely used as a tool to cause issues between Charlotte and Sydney. Tom is an idiot I agree.
I was so angry at this ending, not so much them not being together. But I wanted to them show a bit more passion at being parted, at this point for life, I mean don't get meekly back into the carriage girl, slap him or give him a darn good piece of you mind, then cry your eyes out. Even Sidney didn't seem that bummed he was like egh I don't love her but then again will be rich. She could have said I will not think of you at all... why don't you think badly of him he? Sold up the river girl... for someone who has fortune albeit to save his brother's family but still very meek and mild manner, for someone who is described as having too many opinions she had very little to say, but it wasn't an awesome silence like Brief Encounter.
I know right.. I thought he should at least run to her a lay a big passionate kiss on her.. The passion was a little lack luster for all they've been through..

Its such a shame that after building up the tension and the love game between these 2 now the series 1 finished with such a sad tone that just puts all the fans in such a state that well have to wait now for maybe 1 year until we get season 2. It wasnt the best ending but I guess you need to build up the interest in fans somehow 😫😫

I think that Babington should borrow the money to restore Sanditon, he became even richer by marrying Miss Denem, a wealthy heiress.
The end of season one is a biography of Jane Austen herself. Such a sad ending happened in her life. And we all at the time of watching the 8th series broke our hearts.
But it seems to me that there should be a second season.
Firstly, Susan told Charlotte that not everything was lost, that you shouldn’t give up in love and everything could change.
Secondly, it is not known how the fate of Georgiana, Tom, Sanditon ...
I think that Susan should come to Charlotte to pick her up for a visit to London, where Charlotte will be able to calm down from all that has been experienced. And they will meet Sidney in London ... She will be older, prettier, with Susan's help even prettier.
In the description of the series, it was said that "Charlotte Haywood's life will change forever. And such an ending did not lead to anything.

These are all very talented actors. I am a big fan of Anne Reid, have been since the days of Coronation Street.... she can play any roll.
However I feel that the writing on this is somewhat lacking and lets the players down; I watched the classic BBC '95 Pride and Prejudice last week and it is quite perfect even some 24 years later. The BBC has a knack for period drama which is untouched.
I wonder how Jane Austen would feel about this false ending to her unfinished work?

Wow that's the 1st video that made me look at Sidney in a not so favorable light.. But just a little. Guess he was a little bit of a player anyway but Charlotte was starting to change that.. Amazing how these shows really do a good job bringing out so many real life situations.. Of course we all want him to fall deeply and irresistibly in love w her and they have a happy ending.. Real life has enough un happy endings.. We want bliss and happiness if we are going to invest our time and emotions into this silly crap....lolol

I was disappointed that he broke Charlotte's heart over money for his brother. He could have borrowed from Miss Lamb or stuck a business deal so she could own part of the town. He was only gone a day and made that decision???
