A quick maintenance video on changing the Final Gear Oil on my 2018 Honda Goldwing. A shout out to Ride'n with Rick who had some good tips on performing this procedure. Check out his channel below!

Thanks for the video! After seeing and reading about so many of these being low, I decided to check mine on the 2021 DCT I have. The level was just below the bottom threads - easily reachable with the tip of my finger. So I'm calling that close enough. I only have about 1100 miles. I'll probably change it out with Amsoil Synthetic Severe Gear 75W-90 at my first oil change. I'm looking forward to using their easy squeeze pack 👍.
I too change the final drive fluid each and every oil change. Also an old fashion thumb pump oil can with a goose neck spout works soooo much better than a meat injector. It is my understanding that you simply fill the final drive until oil reaches the lip of the filler hole. No measurements needed. I also have found with other bikes with final drives, (1200 RT, 1600GTL, concours) it usual takes 3 or 4 fluid changes before the extracted oil starts to come out pretty much clear. Hope this helps.
You got it done. Good man. Pretty easy to do and now you have piece of mind knowing it’s correct. When I did mine, it had little in the case as well.
I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out why so little was in there or came out. Do they leave the factory like that or are the dealers just lazy?
@@motorider4130 the short answer is yes. Either that or they don't know or worse, don't care. The bike comes shipped from the factory with minimal fluids and its the dealers job to replace or top off all fluids. I initially replaced mine at 300 miles and I drained maybe two tablespoons from the diff. I can only conclude the dealer did not ensure 4.7 ounces was in the case. No way I burned up oil in the case within 300 miles. Just keep an eye on it and maybe replace it at your next oil change. Gear oil is cheap and its an easy job to do.
Regarding the question, why the drain bolt is an Allen screw, I suspect it was chosen because the required tool (rod with six corners) is slim and protects the surrounding cables from damage and accidental tearing off.
I have to assume you don’t like the OEM seat, seeing the bag on your seat. I agree with that, the seat that came on my 2018 wing tour was more like something that comes on a moped. I replaced it with an expensive Corbin but what a difference!
Yeah..I bought a wingsoft seat from a fellow rider on fb and that works most of the time. The only time it does not is if I am riding highway miles for most of the day. I just add my airhawk cushion and I’m good.
I have a 2004 GL 1800. It requires 4 ozs. Gets changed on every oil change. Did you take the bike on a drive before changing? Gear oil seems to flow better when hot.
According to the 2018 manual it states to change the gear oil in 3 years. That seems an awfully long time but it is a closed system so where else would the oil go? I did run the bike for about a 10-15 minute ride prior to changing the oil. I think I will be changing it every other oil change in the future.

@@billymc2681 I’m not the only one..a lot of others have commented on the low level of gear oil. I would think the dealer should check this prior to or during prep to customer.

Yes..it seems to be a ongoing issue with the final drives. Some are ok but most are not filled correctly.

2 oz - that is crazy. I change the final drive oil with each engine oil change - it's easy so why not. That final drive does a lot of work so give it fresh gear oil. I use a Mix Mizer plastic syringe from Walmart - it has a larger output tube than what you're using so a little easier to get that thick gear oil through it. The 2 bolts on your final drive are correct. Use caution on the fill cap - it's just cheap pot metal so don't crank down on it too tightly or you will break it.
Thanks. Good info to know. I just snugged up those bolts hand tight..same as I do when I change the engine oil. I don’t get why there was so little in the drive. I mean did the dealer even put anything in or is that just from the factory so it doesn’t get ruined in transport? So weird..
Thanks. I mean wtf right?! 2 oz..just weird! Did it come from the factory like that or did the dealer just say whatever and not even bother to check? I’ll see if I can find that one from Walmart. Someone also mentioned that harbor freight has some sort of 20 oz pump with a tube that works well for like $6.
@@motorider4130 A lot of owners are finding the same thing. Surprisingly mine was full when I went to change it the first time. Maybe my dealer took care of it on PDI - IDK. That Mix Mizer is in the auto parts section at Walmart. I'm sure there are other good products to use as well.
Another viewer just mentioned to me that the fluids are all filled at the factory to spec and I guess there’s more in there than what actually comes out? IDK either lol..all I can say is it did not look good and I’m glad I changed it out.
Honda factory computer fills the final drive. Oil level will be about 1/8 inch below the fill opening. Just where most of us find it. It’s heavy gear oil. Even sitting for a day we never get it all out. Like the motor. There is a oil change amount and a rebuild amount. The motor holds one Quart more oil on a rebuild. I use this example as I don’t know the final drive rebuild amount. We Americans always fill until oil runs out the fill hole. If the Factory was really leaving every bike low on oil there would be mass damage to final drives. To refill get a old fashion thumb pump oil can from a farm store.
All good info to know. I’m not trying to knock honda I just want to be sure that everything gets what it needs...but what you say makes sense as well. Thanks! 👍🏻
Nice fluid change buddy. You should see if you can find a service manual for your bike. That will enable you to read about procedures on how these things are done also. Big help.
I kind of wondered if much fluid didn't come out due to the bike being on the centerstand, but thinking about it that would be a mess on the kickstand. Hmm.

Yeah I’ve been thinking about getting the service manual...especially when it comes time for the brakes, air filter (which the bike is built around 😂), tire removal etc. i think it’s about $160? Putting the bike on the side stand would not help as it would lean the bike in the wrong direction..even the owners manual says to out on the centerstand. I’ve talked to some people online and most everyone has had the same experience with the lack of fluid coming out. At least now I know it has close to the correct amount..although I may look for a better solution to pump fluid in for next time.

There has to be a free Manual in pdf format floating around. Check the fb group files section, I bet someone has it.
I have one but I prefer an actual physical book. I don’t have an ipad or tablet that I can use so I can see the pages larger. I saw a manual on ebay for around 80 so I might purchase that instead.

I did purchase a physical one though bc I just prefer a hard copy one. I bought it from a place called Service Repair Shop Manual for about $90 I think. Hope this helps!
Did you figure out that the magnetic drain plug went in the top not the bottom? Just curious.
I actually think that tue drain plug is to replace the factory oil plug for the engine lol. So on my next oil change I’ll be using it there. I must have mis-read the description when I purchased that plug.
When I changed mine it didn't have enough oil in it just like yours.
Why didn't you take the muffler off. Lot simpler to get the oil in..just did that today
Honestly it never occurred to me. But I suppose you could..I would just be concerned about scratching the paint to do a simple job.

Sorry for the late reply! I saw it this morning but forgot to respond. I think I may have gotten it at Harbor Freight? It’s been awhile so I apologize.
My 2020 was low by 2 OZs. I check it as soon as I got home including the engine. Engine was on the dot. The dealer told me, final drive oil comes from Japan. OK, why not checking it ??? LOL. I do not get it. I am going to change it every oil change. For pennies, why not.
I’ll probably change it every other oil change. I mean I guess it’s fine bc I have not heard of any drive failures but better to be safe! 👍🏻👍🏻

Good idea but after almost 9 months of use I doubt I would get anywhere with them. Going forward I’ll be doing it every other oil change I think.
