I said that exact thing to my friend, who is a music producer who also plays bass and drums. He works with some of the better known gospel artists and some outside of that genre. He went to arts schools with other artists, including some now well known. ANYWAY, his response (to the statement Prince was underrated) was: ‘LOL Well NOT among actual artists.’ He went on to say ‘we all consider Prince THE absolute G. O. A. T. without exception.’ In fact, one of his friends had gotten picked to play with Prince in his last year and was over the moon about it.

@@HiroForever Prince is always highlighted for his music and songwriting. But I think he should also be highlighted for his wider range than Whitney, as she said herself.

Our stories are always very similar, it was during that time I started collecting Prince cds and cassettes. It was during this time I learned that For You was actually his debut album (I had always thought it was "Prince"). You can just imagine the excitement of discovering a whole new Prince album. I remember staying up that night to watch the entire episode because my mom knew I had to watch it.

Great to see u Devin😄I really enjoyed hearing you talk about your first exciting Prince experience watching Arsenio Hall in 91 as a child, 💜💜I agree Prince was on top form with his music, dancing, singing. I do love his performance of Kiss, great dance routine and I’m sure Prince was paying tribute to Saturday Night Fever’s “You should be dancing”🕺🏽😄My Mum’s fave movie from the 70’s.
Cream is great to, I prefer the jazzed up version, my fave being Prince on the Jimmy Kimmel show 2013. Btw I have a feeling Prince was avoiding Arsenio to avoid speaking😂 In 92 at the Heritage awards Prince was talked about being criticised, the beginnings of his battle with WB and the music critics.

And my Grandmother told me “ Princey Princey” is gonna be on Arsenio Hall , she called him that. Like you Devin I recorded it on my VCR , but I watched it with her . That opening told the story , it was gonna be a fonky night . I will always remember the the break between let’s go crazy and kiss they guitar Levi’s playing Epic. I thought I was the only one see is hand shaking during Cream 😂 Purple Rain when he blows on the guitar after he plays it on fire . I could write forever about Prince “Rosie Sing” lol Thanks Devin. O Yeah I hear Cream the same way as well Lol lol lol lol

BTW I do psychic work and I managed to get Prince’s soul’s attention, and he was watching with me and he’s very touched to get your perspective. “ I did know what he was doing to go on Arsenio Hall”. He said. The typhoon thing is funny. Prince is also on board with you getting your own channel once Eloy comes back.

I love when Prince was on The Arsenio Hall show i remember watching it i didn't care how late it was, it was so good the way he danced he changed outfits with every song he performed. Your 're right it was like a mini concert. I thought Patti Labelle was so funny the way she was going on about him.😁It was that show that became a fan of hers as well. I remember Prince back then he never talked. Prince and Arsenio Hall go way back they were really good friends I don't think Prince performed like that on any other show. When Arsenio came back to late night in 2014 Prince was the first to contact him to congratulate hm and to tell he would be there, and he was. It was his final show, that he did, and he performed another mini concert type with 3rd eye girl it was so good. 💜🎸

Hell yeah! I remember me and my sister sitting down to watch this. + we recorded it and watched it over and over and over our favorite part was that the end of cream when he act like he was eating something and he was talking to the crowd and he stuck his tongue out. We still do that to this day 😂

The way you describe this performance reminds me of how I felt seeing Prince in the movie Purple Rain. I was very young when I heard Prince for the first time while my cousin was working on his Trans Am. He was playing Prince on and 8-track. I was riding my bike, heard the music and actually stopped. I asked my cousin who he was playing and when he said Prince I was so confused. Of course we had the Prince who conversation and he explained that was his name, just Prince. I looked at one of the 8 track tapes he handed me Prince was on the cover no shirt on. It was at that moment I knew MJ was going to have a run for his money. A while later when Dick Clark said Prince was going to be on the show, I was so excited and I wanted to hear what his speaking voice sounded like. Then that strange interview happened where he barely spoke. I was like, NOOOOOO! Then a few years later when Purple Rain came out I was so excited. I knew I would finally hear Prince's speaking voice. I was way too young to go to a rated R movie, but I made a plan and bought a ticket to a G-rated movie and ninja style snuck into Purple Rain. I was in heaven watcing Purple Rain seeing Prince on that screen. I could go on and on... but I've already written a whole essay here... LOL! By the way, I am from Indiana too!

The absolute professionalism of this performance blew me away. They played it in New Zealand several months after America and I loved the passion and energy and realised much later on, this was his big return - funky new group and sound - yet some media outlets could not get past his look, which was lets face it - a bit little richardy.

"There was something different about this particular experience. . . . " Its the typhoon! (You just don't realize it.) It is one of my favorites and I don't know why. But it could be that it is part of the package of this time period that is just so amazing.
This was the only concert that the U.S got of Diamonds and Pearls. It was supposed to feel like a concert. After Prince and the NPG finished watching their performance on Arsenio, one of them asked Prince when they were going to tour the U.S. Prince exclaimed, "We just did!" And then they went to Europe. Prince skipped touring the U.S. a noticeable number of times.
Daddy Pop is my favorite. here is a link to a great mash-up of a number of performances of Daddy Pop: ua-cam.com/video/_QPqSx2xi8s/v-deo.html

It was such an electric time for Prince. I think whenever he got into his stage persona, it blew everyone away... Prince did that throughout his career... shall I say "Sheer perfection"? I went to two of his concerts, one in 1998 and then in 2011 in the purple vip section, right next to the symbol stage. He played all of his guitar solos right above me about 5 feet. So close that the folks had to tell me to back up when he sang Purple Rain because of the machines that would blow out the purple ribbons out into the air.... Those tickets were 1,200 each!! Anyway, both concerts were completely different. I don't think I've ever seen an artist ever make sure that each concert was different from the one before.

It's always interesting seeing people who got into Prince after Graffiti Bridge. Sometimes I wished I'd gotten into him as an adult (I turned 20 in 91) because my perception of him is so different due to the previous decade. Great to see this from your perspective. BTW, I agree with your assessment of the Cream performance. I like that a lot better than the album version.
