Change does strange things to us. We're moving on, we're not the same anymore... but that's not quite true, is it? When we struggle with our personal metamorphosis, we simultaneously develop a separate space in our psyche devoted solely to the capacity for reminiscence, for nostalgia. It's a strange thing, really. The more we change, the more we feel bound to the past, and that seems counter-productive and paradoxical. But I like to think that people are like trees. Trees grow, and sometimes trees can get hurt, bruised, burned. They can have things written on them, or a splinter may chip off, leaving a hole that's never filled up. And what I've always found interesting is that these spots of injury don't really get any bigger than they were when they were made. The tree gets bigger and bigger, but the sore spot remains the same size, and so when the tree is a sufficient size, well... it kind of swallows up the injury. It's harder to see. But we know it's still there. I think people are a lot like that.
