"This is one of the most popular of the Finnish master's lesser compositions. It is one number from the incidental music to a drama written by the composer's gifted brother-in-law, Alfred Jarnefelt, entitled "Kuolema" ("Death"). The Valse Triste has a programme wich accounts for the yearning and shuddering sadness of the music. It is night. The son who has been watching by the bedside of his sick mother has fallen asleep from sheer weariness. Gradually a ruddy light is reflected through the room; there is a sound of distant music; the glow and the music steal nearer until the strains of a valse melody float distinctly to our ears. The sleeping mother awakens, rises from her bed, and in her long white garment, wich takes the semblance of a ball-dress, begins to move slowly and silently to and fro. She waves her hands, and beckons in time to the music, as through she were summoning a a crowd of invisible guests. And now they appear, these strange visionary couples, turning and gliding to an unearthly valse rhythm. The dying woman mingles with the dancers, she strives to make them look into her eyes, but the shadowy guests one and all seem to avoid her glance. Then she sinks exhausted on her couch, and the music breaks off. But presently she gathers all her strength, and invokes the dance once again with more energetic gestures than before. Back come the shadowy dancers, gyrating in a wild, mad rhythm. The weird gaiety reaches a climax; there is a knock at the door, which flies wide open; the mother utters a despairing cry; the spectral guests vanish; the music dies away, Death stands on the threshold." Rosa Newmarch. I found this on the 4 hand piano music sheet and I wanna share it. Beautiful and sorrowful piece.
My goodness ,you played that so beautifully, both with great feeling and technicality, Mr Barton. It is without a doubt one of my all time favourite pieces of music. What a pleasure .. well done!!!
Wow formidable !!!
FELICITATIONS MAESTRO :) Marie

Wonderful! I enjoyed your beautiful music very much.
c'est très beau, bravo
So very beautiful.
Paul Barton playing Sibelius. A pleasant finding on youtube.
I really don't know why this guy isn't playing concerts and making millions. ;-)
Because he already was a concertist and didn't enjoy the stressful lifestyle
@ fascinating
Few classical musicians make millions.
@@PaulVinonaama *it was a joke
I guess making recordings are a lot more enjoyable than live performances.
So beautiful
so lovely
Thank you, you hear that Debussy was inspired by Sibelius. Sibelius was somehow musical impressionistic as well.
Meraviglioso
Immediately pressed like. Thank you for this
Замечательное исполнение! Теперь мне точно нравится этот вальс!

Så vakkert på piano..🎹🎹🎵🎶💙
Har ikke hørt stykket spilles på piano før, bare i orkester.
Men mye finere på piano 🎹🎹
Thank you, Mr.Barton
Can you Do Cziffra's transcription too?
Try the Waltz "Dios Nunca Muere" (God never dies) by mexican composer Macedonio Alcala.
... saludos
How do you memorize so much music? I love listening to you play thanx!
Teresa 1961, maricruz Olivier 🥰🥰🥰

What I say : all applause for this
Nice performance.
The music isn't available for *free* download, though. Sibelius died in 1957 and so his music is still in copyright.
I like the Bösendorfer 290 Imperial best. :o
Какая тональность?
Nice touch but the ternary rhythm is too regular, the waltz becomes too rigid.
Touched by an Angel/The Empty Chair brought me here.
That poor sad cat...
glad i'm not the only one still crying for that cat
omg so beautiful did you write this?
???
Bravo!
