USGS seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones walks Larry through what a 7.8 magnitude earthquake would do to downtown Los Angeles, why it's feasible that Californians could get an even bigger one, and why people are more at risk of going bankrupt than dying from an earthquake.

Woo! Lucy Jones!!
I want that painting on the wall to the left!!
Looks like something a little kid could do, and certainly an adult, so just make your own :)
Interesting about retrofitting. I watched an old beautiful building being rebuilt as condos. They gutted the old office building, put up a steel frame inside the building that they attached the front and side of the old building to and then built out the interior of the building. It looked the same on the outside as it did prior to the rebuild. That's not retrofitting, but it could be something to consider if the funds are available.
Oh, my god. I hope the homeless are OK!
Already homeless be many more displaced and homeless
What about a Tsunami after the earthquake ?
Michael from wayI've looked up and what she has tweeted I don't think one is possible from the San andreas fault. But do your own research as I'm not an expert
@@unrelentingdischarge8544 idk I've looked it up too and it said it's very possible to cause tremendous tremors that ripple distance to the ocean floors which can trigger a tsunami
Kurtis Burton Our fault line doesnt allow for it because it is on land. Usually tsunamis happen because of the earthquakes that japan and indonesia where the quakes happen underwater and displace water heavily. So the water needs somewhere else to go. Hence waves and tsunamis. It might be possible that it would be very slight, nothing even remotely close to what you saw in the San andreas movie. Lucy Jones tweeted this herself.
Kurtis Burton you have to imagine where the fault line is though. On land. So the waves of the quake (according to my sometimes fault logic. Would be pushed away from the shore right? Usually tsunamis are caused by underwater quakes that displace water like in the japan quake like I just stated. Anyways much love brother stay safe!
Unrelenting Discharge The San Andreas is a Strike-Slip fault. Meaning the plates slide past each other. Usually a strike slip earthquake even out in the Ocean doesn’t move the ground enough (Maybe 18 feet) to cause massive water motion. Not to mention its on land. In the 2011 Japan earthquake that fault was not Strike-Slip. It moved the ground almost 125 feet! Strike slip quakes are also more rolling. So the water doesn’t move around as much as just a huge shake.
Obviously there are NO TECHNiCAL QuESTIONs on the USGS Job interview 😂
i wonder if these two banged it out after this.. im gonna go with YES.... 8D
Dr Lucy why u trying to pull the wool over ours eye?? Maybe you should take dutchsinse advice and go have a conversation with him!
So the ground shakes, buildings crack & owners lose money. Shame Lucy, people die in earthquakes. Why did Lucy & USGS fail to warn the people of Ridgecrest an earthquake was heading their way? Dutchsince gave them warnings, correctly forecasting the location & magnitude, days before the event. Why doesn't the USGS use the same method? Shame, shame, shame USGS.
Amen!
Yes absolutely Dutchnise explains it perfectly. Wake up be honest don't be corrupt.
Uh... April Fools?
Fake news
Why is that fake news can you explain 🙂
She is mad cuz we are not drinking her kool-aid!
She's delusional.
Is she delusional now???
She is stuck in the "old" science and has no open mind for new analyses. She needs to continue with retirement IMO. She hasn't offered anything new and has shown her theories are much farther away from truth than previously thought.
