Pile of Shame used to be what mainly aircraft modellers called started but unfinished models.. Now it seems like others have adopted the word and use it fas a synonyme to a "stash"... Not sure why..
Well since you asked "how does it compare to my own"? Not really a fair comparison because I started collecting a long time before you. Here are some hints, I still have my first GW miniatures I bought in 1984, I have 2nd edition rhinos in shrink wrap and and over 200 metal manowar ship, monster and flier models. The only GW miniatures I got rid of in all that time are various orcs that I traded for other GW miniatures. I have what I consider a "collection of old metal miniatures" and a giant pile of opportunity. Before ebay, when someone left the hobby you could buy for 75 - 100 dollars what now would cost 5-8 times that much. I do know a couple of single IT workers that drop many hundreds of dollars per month on GW products so there are some real GW whales out there that dont play, paint or model much and have mountains not piles of shame. Personally if I had that much extra money I would be dead in Las Vegas from all the cocaine and hookers.
