Earthquakes, blizzards and deep snow oh no! Thanks Ron! We hear you on the snowshoes, because post-holing on every step really can be dicey! We love the MSR EVOs -- ultra light, and pretty darn effective. Not quite big enough to float Adam on powder, but they certainly stop him from sinking too deep. Hope you're able to get out and enjoy the winter weather after the bomb cyclone blast subsides! ❤️
You guys perfectly summed up why Winter hiking is so underrated! We are lucky here in Utah as well! Lots of great hikes in Northern Utah in the Winter.

Haha yes-- that makes us so happy!!! You will most definitely thank us for the Lakes trail. Sequoia is probably our favorite national park, and you know how much we love NPs so that's really saying something. Can't wait to hear how you like it (especially in winter), and of course CR as well!!! ❤️
Again, what beautiful scenery with breathtaking vistas! Having seen these before, I still found myself cracking up watching Adam sinking in the snow at those higher elevations. Adam, you have tremendous "Staying Power!" to keep going. Way to go! Same for you too, Elise. You are just as much a trooper! Can't wait to see what's next!
Thanks so much, Tom. Ya if people haven't hiked in deep snow before they really don't understand how much more difficult it is than regular hiking. It's just a whole other world -- and one we're definitely going to be stepping back into come January!!! ❤️
Thanks Gary! How great that you got to live in Tahoe -- we'd love to live up there, or in Bishop or Mammoth, to be closer to the Sierra. Glad we could bring back some memories of those old hikes, and hopefully we'll bring back some more once the weather calms down and we can get up there for some snowshoeing adventures this winter! ❤️
Really a good idea with this kind of compilation on a channel like yours that not only entertains but also gives advice and recommendations to other keen hikers. It will remind people of the opportunities and, especially at this time of year, I could imagine that you might inspire a few new year's resolutions. :)
Epic hikes and love the choice of "fun" with or without traction. 😀 Thank you both for these wonderful and inspiring vlogs and we all wish you the best for the holidays and the new year!!
Grew up in the Appalachians. I don't go east of Mississippi anymore. Huckleberry knob is winter go to and Clingmans Dome. NC side has couple but my favorite is Huckleberry Knob.
I love you guys and you inspire me to get outdoors more. I just rebooted my channel for my van life journey and I plan on doing a lot of hikes! I love watching you guys and I have my own "LiveHardLoveHard" hike bucket list!
That's fantastic! Looking forward to hearing how van life goes for you. It's something we will consider for our epic best hike in every state trip once we early retire. Maybe by then you'll have some best state hikes to recommend! ❤️
Ya James once we found the right way down from Alta to Pear it was fine, but it was legit scary when we were trying to go straight down to the lake and kept getting cliff bonked! It was a really good lesson in staying patient and figuring out the right beta. ❤️
I wholeheartedly agree! I haven't been to Anza-Borrego, but the rest are almost better as winter hikes than summer just to get to experience them in solitude! Eagle Peak is also a gorgeous view of the valley and very peaceful once you split off from Yosemite Falls Trail. I've been thinking about the Pohono from Tunnel View whenever we finally get a weekend of clear weather (I'm not mad about the snow, though!). 😉 I do have a question - what boots do you guys use for snow hikes? Happy New Year and here's to more adventures! 🎉
OMG Teddie we're having the same mixed feelings about the storms -- we're glad because it's good for California, but are going totally stir crazy because every weekend lately our plans get canceled by another crazy blizzard! We've just been using our regular Salomon X-Ultras with gaiters for the snow. That generally works great -- good gaiters are essential! -- but after a full day in snow the water does seep through the toes a little so on overnights they can freeze. If we start doing more multi-day snow trips we will prob need to invest in fully waterproof snow boots. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you for the rec love! I do need winter boots after spending all of last winter in GTX Salomon trail runners with just snow gaiters and being so cold I thought I was going to lose a toe more than once. 🙈😅 I know you guys love your X Ultra 3s and it's good to know they work okay enough for winter! Not a ton of sizes left, but I ordered a pair to try. The new 4s have pretty thin outsoles which wouldn't be ideal for rocky trails and I know the 3s were sturdier in that respect. I tried a few others like the Oboz Bridger, Keen Revel, Sportiva Nucleo and they're either too wide/high volume for me or caused blisters and hot spots. Back to Salomon it is - I can pretty much only wear narrow Salomons and Sportivas. And hoping for a clear weather window this weekend! I too have been going stir-crazy the past month or so. How is your back feeling? ❤️
@@6MTGirl The back is still pretty much the same, but at least hiking doesn't seem to make it worse. I really need an adventure and this weather is harshing my mellow! Hope you get out there this weekend! ❤

I love your videos.. I like your humor about self abuse (in a serious way), refreshing. Watching you do your thing has led me to watch other peoples hiking/climbing videos. I've learned I can't watch serious climbing videos, they make me too nervous.. so hike around but don't climb things like the Fisher/mystery towers although it prolly has a world class snack spot or two ;)
Thanks so much, Joseph! Really glad you enjoy the humor in the vids -- that's so much how we are in real life, always joking even when things are a bit dire, so it just makes sense to put it in the videos as well! ❤️
Fantastic! Gosh, these hikes are incredible, and quite long, esp with snow (except for Anza Borrego 😂). Do you think some of them are possible to ski? Thanks again, Merry Christmas!
Absolutely, Paul! Badger Pass to Taft is a classic ski route that would be amazing, and people definitely ski the Sequoia Lakes area as well. The others have too much you'd need to hike, so you'd be carrying skis more than walking, but those two are totally do-able. Merry Christmas! ❤️
That was great guys! Very well done. I hope I can get out to Callie for some of those adventures. I think it’ll have to be summer though. After all my great trips in the desert during the winter, I froze my ass of even there, it was 20! I’m not sure I can bring myself back to the windy freezing high mountain sufferfests.
Haha that's understandable, Karl. High altitude makes everything feel so much colder, too. We've got some really warm new winter gear so we're hoping to do a few good winter climbs, but you know we're stoked for you to come out and do some Cali craziness this summer!
I want to go on all of these hikes! Thank you for the ideas and making it seem so possible. You guys have such an amazing adventurous life together!❤❤❤ quick question, do you car camp the night before and night after these big hikes?
Thanks Heather! It depends on the hike, but yes in Yosemite we will often car-camp just outside the park and then drive in first thing in the morning. If we're there for multiple days, we'll probably try to find a cheap motel within an hour or two of the park in order to get a good sleep between hikes -- or, of course, just bring the tent and camp along the hike during winter when it's easy to get a camping permit! ❤️
You guys are incredible! I really enjoy your content. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures. I look forward to 2023 to see what’s next. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Virginia
Thanks so much, Randy! We love sharing them with you, and always appreciate your kind encouragement. Merry Christmas to you too -- really looking forward to some exciting 2023 adventures! ❤️

Haha yes Ron they fixed the leak, but not the stain in the ceiling! But at least we're staying dry, but going totally stir crazy being trapped inside with the storms every weekend. Going to try getting out in the Sierra this weekend, but there's yet another blizzard coming so it may not work out 🥶
full moon snowshoeing is bomb, maybe give mt. Our pleasure! We might have to expand this list soon too, because we've been finding some other ones that we really like a lot -- especially that amazing natural hot springs snowshoe!!! ❤️
Thanks Cheryl! Yes Cactus to Clouds is always better NOT in summer season. Although you have to be careful in winter because even though the valley temps are perfect, the snow and ice near the summit of Jacinto can get pretty dangerous and usually requires mountaineering experience. The rangers often close a certain portion of the trail during winter months as well to protect people when the risk level is too high. But spring would be great for that one!
Thank you for bringing some scenes from these EPIC hikes to our living rooms. 😁 I hope to get out for a winter day hike next week around Bear Mountain. Wishing you and your loved ones all the best during this magical holiday season. 🎅🏻
Haha, why do these hikes when you can cozy up in your Christmas sweater and watch them on your big screen while sipping the nogg? ;) Hope that Bear Mountain hike is awesome, sounds so fun! And happy happy holidays!
I love that you did this recap! We are headed to CA for our spring break, and I needed some encouragement for Yosemite! Nearly everything online says there’s too much snow, etc. We wanted to do some exploring, and thinking about these recommendations we will add them to our list of possibilities. ❤❤ Happy Holidays!

Just make sure to bring your snow shoes and other winter gear and you'll be golden. Let us know if you need any other tips as your trip gets closer. Happiest of holidays to you as well!
Haha our thoughts exactly! Sometimes we're even post-holing when we do bring snowshoes, but it's always worth it to be in these miraculous places all alone! ❤️
Yess! We contemplated including these ones as well, but they didn't quiiite make the cut :D However, we've got our eyes on some interesting DV hikes hopefully this season, so maybe the list might change soon!

What are the access roads and parking like for these hikes in the winter? Being from out of state, I always want to travel to CA in the offseason to avoid crowds and wildfires, but the thing that always turns me away is inaccessible roads and the tire chain rules for rental cars.
This is a fascinating question -- we didn't know there were rules about chains on rental cars! Depending on conditions, they can definitely have chain or snow tire requirements in both Yosemite and Sequoia. What about renting a 4WD Jeep rather than a typical rental car? That should solve the problem. Big knobby tires and 4WD can handle pretty much anything. ❤️
Hi im Elle im 11 years old and i love your videos! You should come to Potter Valley it's in northern California and is a beautiful small town it is surrounded by tall mountains with lots of amazing hikes if you come me and my dad who's name is Chris could show you our favorite hikes like trout creek, secret river access, and more 😀
Hi Elle it's so nice to meet you! We're both super happy you're enjoying the videos, and we'd love to come to Potter Valley the next time we get up to northern California and see your favorite hikes! Hopefully we'll make a trip up there this spring or early summer. ❤️
Really any hike is worth doing when you're first starting out -- just getting outdoors and working those balance and uphill muscles is what matters in the beginning. Assuming you're in good shape and want something tough, anything in the 5-10 mile range with about 3000-4000 feet of elevation gain would be a good first time challenge. In the Southern California area, Mt Baldy is many people's first serious climb. It's tough but do-able, and you'll feel fantastic at the top! ❤️
See Liv ❤️ love's winter hiking list for reference. $1300 for full up gear haul. Make sure you take poles!!! They keep you from falling down. Especially if wearing a pack.
Yosemite. The trail between Illouette Falls and Nevada Falls (Panoramic Trail) is a haul in snow. BUT probably easier than trying road to Glacier/from parking or Ski area. 4 mile trail is probably closed or posted as dangerous. Vernal Falls trail is giant ice cube from mist. If cold. The high trail has rock ice fall. So "middle " is it up to Nevada Falls is the and traditional route up. (Lyle/Lyell) is out through little Yo valley. To go to Tuolumne Meadows most go up from Valley. North side across from half dome. Tough. long. Take compass and map if not good at this stuff. You can go across Clouds rest BUT you may be walking sideways in wind looking down 6000 feet into Tenaya Canyon on the narrow part. Standing on snow cornice of death. Way easier from Lee Vining side. The overlook at the top of the hill after Illouette falls Is the spot. Personally my favorite Yosemite hike is Glacier to Clouds rest. Reverse back down you do Halfdome. Or on way up.
Oh that could be interesting, although we'd have to look into the logistics of that one. Possible to drive out to Tuolomne Meadows this time of year? Thought the road closed...
Palisades second lake. I call that monolith Thumb. Not the actual one. Alex Honold has video climbing it or not. He has one of Tenaya Peak too. Great peak in Yosemite.
Do one the Trifecta Baldwin hill. Santa Monica to Venice and back. Vasquez rocks after brunch at Getty. I did Hollywood Hills but the dog sht smell and parking up behind Hollywood BLVD was too much and the crowd was crazy. So no thanks on that one again. Griffith is insane also on weekends but did do it once. There is Olivera to Japanese tea to Chinese to Disney to the aqueduct to Getty Mansion to Pinks to pier burger. That's not walking though. Vasquez to Devils Punchbowl Over Wrightwood back into LA.
Yea I know I left Colorado out. Mount Blanca/Blanco. Rocky Mountain: Meeker, Longs, Hallett, Wild Basin, but I like Indian Peaks best. I generally stick to Great Sand Dunes area though. Then drive back to Moab. Zion/Toroweap, Vegas. Death Valley. Lone Pine. Yosemite. Lassen. Crater Lake. Eugene. Florence. Salem. Hood cross river to Randle. Rainier. Home. Repeat. Reload. Repeat.......add Yellowstone. Obviously starting point is in west. I lived/worked in CO UT WY CA. WA now. Live ❤️ love knows Washington too. It is epic here in summer. Winter nope. Skiing. Pleasant winter hike. Nope.
Haha. Well I personally feel conflicted about this statement. On the one hand, I prefer the warm pop tart because I like the filling to be more gooey. But on the other hand, the cold weather always makes me hungrier while hiking (it's like your body is trying to build a layer of poptart adipose tissue to warm you up). So it could really be a toss up here. We'll have to consult the expert Adam and get back to you....😂 -E
Winter takes a road. And often it's a 5 mile hike up said road before you get to TH. In the snow. So now Kearsarge is 21 miles not 10-12. Whitney is actually the shortest. BUT FOR MY HUMBLE INPUT Whitney is all around best. Easiest. Closest to LA. You can go up Carillion or Lone Pine Creek also. Or to Lone Pine Peak. Carillion up and right to top is gorgeous in winter. Good view overlooking iceberg lake. Hard hike though. Sequoia big tree next up the I 5. Lemon Cove entrance. #1 Sequoia in deep snow. They plow. Pull into first parking lot. Done and if you crampon it got Moro Rock too. #1 Yosemite. You are liberally in the valley with all kinds of options. Get out da car gawk. BUT Captain Obvious. Go up Nevada Falls low trail. CRAMPONS!!!!!! Then up to the last tree on first hump of halfdome. You can go to cables also. Gawk. Epic view. In trees deep snow go up until it is flat turn left. Trail is obscured. Winds up. May be Ranger ski tracks or not. #1 Kearsarge. #1 Kearsarge. You don't have to go to the pass. If real snow you won't even see the cliff switchbacks and first 6 foot 4 inch sign will be buried. #2 Moab La Sal. Gold Basin. Go to Basin. Aka giant bowl. Turn left up creek follow it to top walk ridge. The end of road is 10000+ you can get to the big parking lot through aspens. BEWARE OF AVALANCHE CONDITIONS! #2 LASSEN VNP. If you can get to it it has the most snow in California but sad cousin. To East Sierras. Yosemite is king but I like Big Pine Creek and Palisades. Hard approach in winter. But you follow the creek. Duh. Still hard if newbie. Navigating through trees etc.
Great recommendations as always, Dan! We're dying to get up in the Sierras but right now everything is shut down from these massive snowstorms that just keep coming. Hopefully it will let up soon and we can get out into some of that deep powder! ❤️
If it is SOCAL. Watch their videos. I now bow to their coverage. Places been. Grudgingly. They are SOCAL 🤴 👑 Royalty. Sierras are best USA offers year round access. Yellowstone ploughs from Mammoth to Cooke City. So you can walk anything off road on that 80 mile stretch. Might freeze to death but hey it is snow. I like Moab best in winter. 5 peaks over 12k! And Henry's if that ain't enough. Road from Zion to Bryce to Hankville over the pass is great, drive through capital reef also. I hit I70 go in from north. Skip Blanding.

always a joy to watch your videos :) and you’ve often done some of my favorite old hikes from when I used to live at tahoe
You too are masters of of high mountain rambles.👍
exactly what I was looking for , I will be trying to find a good hike for buddies this coming firday for a hike in los angeles,
Awesome! If you want to stay in LA itself, check out our Goat Peak video or Adam's LA trail marathon if you want a really long one. ❤️
These hikes are just so pretty and magical in the snow ❄️😍 loved this roundup!!!
Thanks A! Hopefully in a couple of years we'll be exploring some of those classic Austrian Alps snow hikes with you and Marco!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard my dream!!!
Really a good idea with this kind of compilation on a channel like yours that not only entertains but also gives advice and recommendations to other keen hikers. It will remind people of the opportunities and, especially at this time of year, I could imagine that you might inspire a few new year's resolutions. :)
Thanks Catherine! Let's hope this does inspire some resolutions -- any of these 5 would be worthy winter goal hikes for 2023! ❤️
Epic hikes and love the choice of "fun" with or without traction. 😀 Thank you both for these wonderful and inspiring vlogs and we all wish you the best for the holidays and the new year!!
Thanks so much, Dan -- wishing you a happy holidays and adventurous New Year too! ❤️
Powerful thumbnail, opening is simply breathtaking. Cinematography at its finest folks, outstanding work once again!🔥
Thanks so much, Ervin! We really value your opinion on these things, so that is very encouraging! ❤️

I don't go east of Mississippi anymore.
Huckleberry knob is winter go to and Clingmans Dome. NC side has couple but my favorite is Huckleberry Knob.
The views you guys share are insane! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Keep up the great work in 2023!
Thanks so much, Nigel! Happy holidays to you too, and here's wishing you lots of great adventures in 2023! ❤️
That Alta to Pear might be one of the scariest hikes you guys have done!
Ya James once we found the right way down from Alta to Pear it was fine, but it was legit scary when we were trying to go straight down to the lake and kept getting cliff bonked! It was a really good lesson in staying patient and figuring out the right beta. ❤️
Beautiful winter wonderland up there did it.

Your video makes me want to move to California. I love winter hikes. Enjoy!
California will welcome you with open arms when you want to take the plunge!
Merry Christmas from London
Merry Christmas to you too, Zach -- hope you're having a lovely holidays over there ❤
Thanks
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thanks so much!
Another top video guys 😊
Thanks Edu! Was very fun looking back at past winter hikes to get motivated for some new ones this winter! ❤
Just what I was looking for ❤
So happy to hear that! Let us know which ones you do!! ❤️
You guys are incredible! I really enjoy your content. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures. I look forward to 2023 to see what’s next. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Virginia

Tallac in tahoe a go there is a nice ridge looking over fallen leaf lake if you just want to go for a test. needs to be a clear night with decent snowpack for the full effect. also test out your low light camera game. of course, i can't not recommend coconut waffles at the red hut in south shore before or after the hike or anytime for that matter. and Adams studio voice.....i thought he was gonna sell me a timeshare.

thank you for the beautiful scenery! good time to do the palm springs up to mt san jacinto trail you guys did last year!
Thanks for the great Info
So happy to share these hikes -- they're all true winter classics, and hope you do lots or even all of them! ❤️

FANTASTIC !!! Ciao 🙂
Thanks Petr! It's crazy here this winter with all the snow!! Ciao ❤️
Not a big Death Valley fan but the Crater Run is a must also. You can post for ev er BUT socal without Baldwin and heebee geebee is not complete.

What do you recommend as a first time climb? I live in the US
Really any hike is worth doing when you're first starting out -- just getting outdoors and working those balance and uphill muscles is what matters in the beginning.

The overlook at the top of the hill after Illouette falls
Is the spot. Personally my favorite Yosemite hike is Glacier to Clouds rest. Reverse back down you do Halfdome. Or on way up.
How about the hike from tuolumne Meadows down to the valley
Vasquez to Devils Punchbowl
Over Wrightwood back into
LA.
Love the urban hiking idea, Dan!
Nice!
Thanks -- we're actually heading out for some wild snowshoeing in the Sierra this weekend! ❤️
California got it all.yes .
Yea I know I left Colorado out. Mount Blanca/Blanco.
Rocky Mountain:
Meeker, Longs, Hallett, Wild Basin, but I like Indian Peaks best.
I generally stick to Great Sand Dunes area though.
Then drive back to Moab. Zion/Toroweap, Vegas. Death Valley. Lone Pine. Yosemite. Lassen. Crater Lake. Eugene. Florence. Salem. Hood cross river to Randle. Rainier. Home. Repeat. Reload. Repeat.......add Yellowstone.
Obviously starting point is in west. I lived/worked in CO UT WY CA.
WA now. Live ❤️ love knows Washington too. It is epic here in summer.
Winter nope. Skiing. Pleasant winter hike. Nope.
🥶 has arrived here in southern Illinois it's going to very cold here.🥶

@@LiveHardxLoveHard i second this request

We'll do it for sure! ❤️
Why isn't Poptart Ridge on the list??? 🤣 Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
It's assumed that pop tarts are included in the package with ALL of the ridges on this list ;) happiest of holidays to ya friend!
Hi- I think pop tarts taste better in the winter cold. Do you agree?
BUT FOR MY HUMBLE INPUT
Whitney is all around best.
We might head out to Zion next week, weather permitting!
Yes that one 😁
