  • I visited a banana plantation while I was on holiday in Tenerife called "Finca Las Margaritas". In this video, I show some of the red banana plants (Red Dacca) they had at the plantation as well as some Dwarf Orinocos. There were also some papaya, trees and what I believe was a guava tree too.

Impressed by how healthy the bananas look there, and the height of the protective framework is quite remarkable

Yeah, it was very interesting to look around there. I just wished I could do something similar here, although I'd need a large heated greenhouse, or better yet move over there haha 😂😂

Interesting to see the odd papaya, mango, citrus, avocado and guava tree interdispersed among the banana plantation. I suppose they are grown 'for pleasure'/consumption by the staff, while the bananas are grown as the commercial crop, to be sold in shops in the Canaries and further afield. You might like to visit the Netherlands to see their banana plantation ("Wageningen University and Research: sustainable bananas in greenhouses- first Dutch bananas harvested, December 12, 2018")

Yeah, there weren't that many other fruit trees there as it was mainly for commercial production of the Canarian bananas. Some of the plants in this video (like the guava) were in a more out-of-reach area, that I'm even sure I was meant to be in lol, but it was right next to the entrance. There was no one around, in fact, they even had closed off the entrance/exit, I think they thought everyone had left lol, of course, I was still busy filming away 😂😂

Hmm, interesting. It seems they were able to grow bananas in pure coco coir successfully in the Dutch greenhouses.

I'm quite surprised they were able to avoid root rot in those conditions, I wonder how they do it?

@@PeterEntwistle Maybe the greenhouse environment elevates the rate of photosynthesis and transpiration, even in the depths of winter, so excess water is mopped up by the roots pretty quickly and the substrate does not stay wet for extended periods (when the substrate dries out, that's when new air (oxygen) gets drawn into the substrate. Fresh air (oxygen) can not permeate into the substrate if it is too wet for too long).

Wish my bananas looked like that! Would you ever have a spare pup of an Orinoco?

Yeah, you and me both lol 😂.
I was hoping I'd have a spare Dwarf Orinoco this year to give away to friends, but the one I had in the ground rotted away along with the 2 small pups over winter. I did keep one pup from it indoors, which is still growing. And I do have a couple of other Dwarf Oroinocos from different nurseries that I'll be planting in the ground or repotting soon. But the next pup I get from one will be yours 👍

@@PeterEntwistle that’s very kind, I know these plants aren’t cheap and I’m happy to pay you for it.

@@PeterEntwistle I’ve planted up some all of my bananas into bigger pots I’m going to make a video… hopefully I get some pups that you might want as an exchange?

@@tropicalsat52n86 Yeah, I'd be up for a swap when you get any pups. Mysore is one I've wanted to get for a while which I know you have. I'm hoping I get more of my bananas to pup this year. Mine seemed to pup better after having them in the ground last year, both the rajapuri and dwarf orinoco produced pups after being in the ground all summer and autumn.

@@PeterEntwistle I’m hoping these bigger pots make them pup. Still not sure how I’m going to keep my bananas alive over winter.
