Personally I always loved the prequals, the politics was what a lot of people hated but I loved how they showed that and I often wondered what Star Wars was everyone envisioning if not the way it was? I heard people say it wasn’t like what they imagined and I was curious about what they imagined
People hated the politics because they were expecting to see the collapse of the Jedi in the first movie, Vader hunting Jedi and Vader becoming the cyborg by the 3rd movie, then continuing to hunt Jedi as cyborg Vader.
STAR WARS is George Lucas' creation his biggest mistake was handing them to Disney. I always loved The Prequels even the idea of them. Sam is correct...the Prequels are unique and very important for cinema history.
Lucas was run out of town by his fans. When he sold Star Wars the film franchise was dead in the water. You may not like the Disney content, but in real time fans were "done" with Lucas. These days you get all this nostalgia for him, but the prequels still sucked.
@@cameronbrennemanoutdoors Sequels are better than the prequels, on just quality alone. I know that's a "hot take", but the prequels are the "least Star Wars" of anything Star Wars.
I feel like the prequels need a bit of liberty to love. The best example I can give is the sand line. What they’re talking about how it’s a reminder of their respective childhoods. That Padme saw beaches as a vacation spot, a getaway from her rich life while Anakin couldn’t even try to get away from his life of servitude covered entirely by sand. Sand represents the exact opposite thing to each other. That’s not portrayed well on the surface level, and so the line is rightfully memed on endlessly, but if you give it a bit of leeway it can be considered a much deeper scene than “I don’t like sand”.
Damn, I wish I had gotten to play the force unleashed games. I always loved the concept but lacked a platform to play them. Seeing videos of Sam and his love for the franchise make me appreciate his dedication. Even if currently I havent gotten to experience it all. Dude seems awesome
The only movie that Lucas made for himself exactly the way he imagined it is " Phangom menace" It was way after he got the technology to do ig proper and just before the critics destroyed him to and just made him push thd second two prequel movies in a slighgly different tone
I have rewatched the prequel series of movies many times. Episodes 1-3 in movies, I love. I've watched the original series of movies many times, Empire Strikes Back is my favourite of all of them. I have watched the sequel series once. I don't feel the need to watch them again. I was bored.
The problem was without the presence of his ex wife and Carrie Fisher he didn't have enough comedy beats. And especially when the material is dark if the genre is still action/adventure you need the witty one liners to balance out the pathos.
Watch “The Tolkien Professor” in his discussions titled “Other Minds And Hands.” He talks about the art of adaptation and why some are liked and others are not.
I never have hated the prequels. I was actually surprised to find out later that many people didn’t like them and I definitely didn’t understand why. They were some of my favorite movies growing up.
Title is bait he doesn't "GO OFF" on George he sets the record STRAIGHT that George Lucas is an absolute chad. In the full panel he goes on to say how George not only knew exactly what he was doing with the prequels, but he basically made Hollywood his bitch. p.s long live Starkiller
What I liked about the phantom menace is out side of the Anakin parts. It was a glimpse into that the Jedi were! They were peace keepers, diplomats! To me they embodies Theodore Roosevelts saying “speak softly and carry a big stick.” They didn’t to fight but boy oh boy could they finish one
That's one of the biggest problem with the sequel, it's the empire vs. Rebellion all over again, in George Lucas' original plan there would have been another shift in tone; we would have had a new republic that should not be as corrupted as the previous one and an Maul's criminal organization that threatenes its stability. It would have been another new take on star wars.
Funny. I grew up with just the OT, same as Sam. And then the prequels came out, they were EXACTLY what I always expected. Strange how differently we can see things.
As a kid my youth started with the prequels. I absolutely loved them, I didn't even notice Jar Jar being that much of a problem, didn't notice Anakin's bad acting, I just attached his 'disconnect' (acting) to the dark side always looming within him. I loved the political intrigue and complexity. I loved how much more energy they put into chases, world design and basically making a modern variation of the old classics. I then watched the classics, but on tape, with the old visuals, and I liked them. But they felt very basic. I loved the thrill of the prequals more, and LOVED the extra universe building and attention to universe lore, in the prequels. Which they changed too much with the sequels, and they tried to simply it back into the originals. Which is why in my opinion, they didn't work.

He did some amazing stuff in his time, but he will always be the guy who had a true team of people around him when he made star wars. He is great at big new adventures and painting a beautiful galaxy full of amazing stories. He needs his team to focus him though and keep him grounded in realism
There was a lot of hate, but the wonder I had as a kid seeing the prequels was amazing. I loved the originals as a kid too. Then after finding the darth jar-jar theory invigorated a new admiration and let me see the true depth of the story.

My favorite character in the series is Padme’ Amidala and her death while tragic does her character a disservice in the sense that she is able to undermine the chancellor when she can which makes her a formidable opponent in the political arena shown multiple times and in her emotions falls for anakin on Naboo further surprising the chancellor by doing so. Natalie Portman shows us that her character is strong-willed and though she has a pacifism belief she has strong morals and beliefs and stays true to them in the end. Which is why her death deserves more of an explanation than losing the will to fight or heart break because she has two children to fight and live for I mean it just doesn’t seem practical. I’d like some honest feed back
I am firmly in the camp that the prequels do not work as movies. I accept however that there is potential in them. George Lucas was always a man of great vision and ambition who needed other people to gently guide him towards a better outcome (just watch literally any interview with the OT actors on his dialogues...). He was missing that in the prequels. What still showed though was his vision, the incredible scale of the conflict they depict, the expansive worldbuilding. Really just goes to show that collaboration and team work can make a good idea a great project. I still respect him for his vision though
It took me 20 years to enjoy the prequels I was that guy that hated but the sequels humbled me.... I love the prequels now. They aren't perfect but they are more star wars than the sequels will ever be.
OGs were a darker time, the prequels were a brighter more vibrant time represented by the Jedi, then there’s that Kennedy period I can’t explain that. AT ALL!
Canon be damned, Disney already crapped all over it, we need a live action Starkiller movie or even series, with a good writing team and a capable director, Witwer would hit it straight outta the park. I mean good old Star Wars stuff firing on all cylinders, this guy can make it happen.
I like the prequels. I agree some of the dialogue is a bit off... they definitely over did Yoda's speech patterns... "around the survivors a perimeter create".... just no. But the story line I really like. Its the story we all wanted to know, how Anakin became Vader. And it was done well, the CGI and the casting was all good. And the fight scenes and John Williams music etc. All brilliant. If you can ignore some ropey lines, it's a great series of films to watch.
Not my IP of course but I would've much rather preferred George have kept it and simply made Filoni in charge of the whole operation for future content so that George can sit back and actually relax
His answer is in his shirt, ILM. Lucas doesn't Reeally care about the story That Much as the special effects. Like they have aleways come first and then the story. That's why he didn't direct second and third to not be overwhelmed with tinkering with the special effects. That's just his thing, a lot of the lore is just tought out on the spot. Both trilogies did in special effects deparment something that hadn't never been done before. For the prequels plot and dialoque, you can make it phenomenal in the decades in between but it's aight and sometimes bad, sometimes pretty good. So it just is quite clear what comes first, moving ILM forward.
Sam is a year younger than me so I’ve always felt like he was my buddy. He likes all the same things as me and is almost as big a nerd as I am. And he’s even more of a stickler for details than I am!

I grew up with the prequels I was a year old when Revenge of the Sith, something even still to this day I've never understood is the hate the prequels I loved the prequels still do
I was actually young enough to enjoy them when they came out without any bias that comes with age. I think revenge of the sith came out when I was in 8th grade roughly. But to me it was and still is one of the best movies in Star Wars probably tied with empire strikes back just slightly above a new hope. A new hope will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first movie I remember seeing in movie theaters because our movie theater did a special showing of it and it was what started my obsession with fantasy sci-fi.
Sam Witver needs to be on Filonis team. Those two together can make Star Wars last another generation.
I love watching stuff because it's different and not because it's good. Real insightful stuff.
This is true wisdom. It’s easy to take a new thing you don’t understand and push it away; but, if you instead try to learn from it, you will come away with a new perspective - kind of like adding a new tool to your tool belt - and you will find it easier to overcome things you once thought impossible.
Love and respect to Sam Witwer. Truly one of the greats driving Star Wars forward.
God this dude is just so cool idk he's so chill
Cast this man in every star Wars content coming forth
Good start, I would say put him in charge
He seems like the most devoted star wars fan of all star wars actors, he's loyal to George Lucas's, the dude can correct even Dave filoni on the lore, they need to bring back starkiller coz Sam deserves to play him again, even if starkillers force powers are watered down it would be awesome
"George really subverted my expectations."
People must love Epusode 8 and Rian Johnson then. Same shit😊
Nailed it... 100%
@@AdamOMcMurphythey are great Star Wars movies just not good movies unless you are a die hard Star Wars fan
@@cameronbrennemanoutdoors Sequels are better than the prequels, on just quality alone. I know that's a "hot take", but the prequels are the "least Star Wars" of anything Star Wars.
Opinions vary. I hate the new sprint ones, nothing interesting in any aspect. If I feel like watching Star Wars, my go to is the prequels.
There good movies but HOW DID PALPITINE COME BACK?
Dudes almost 50 and looks younger than me 😢
I feel like the prequels need a bit of liberty to love.
And Revenge of the sith is still my favourite star wars film.
Damn, I wish I had gotten to play the force unleashed games. I always loved the concept but lacked a platform to play them. Seeing videos of Sam and his love for the franchise make me appreciate his dedication. Even if currently I havent gotten to experience it all. Dude seems awesome
Do what is not expected. " its like poetry. It rhymes. " GL
Disney PLEASE give this man the wheel already. He is the one to bring balance.
The only movie that Lucas made for himself exactly the way he imagined it is " Phangom menace" It was way after he got the technology to do ig proper and just before the critics destroyed him to and just made him push thd second two prequel movies in a slighgly different tone
OF COURSE it was different, he was showing what it was like as Ben SAID it was, "before the dark times".
I have rewatched the prequel series of movies many times. Episodes 1-3 in movies, I love.
I've watched the original series of movies many times, Empire Strikes Back is my favourite of all of them.
I have watched the sequel series once. I don't feel the need to watch them again. I was bored.
Its like poetry, it rhymes.
Never seen a man lose so hard in public like that. Ouch. Prayers for you buddy and may God show you the light.
LORD willing, amen.
Yet, when Disney got the rights, and done their version of 7,8, and 9, they just copied the OT. Nothing new just copy and paste.
I never have hated the prequels. I was actually surprised to find out later that many people didn’t like them and I definitely didn’t understand why. They were some of my favorite movies growing up.
Sam is not going off on George Lucas here. He’s just talking _about_ him. Which is obvious since this is…Star Wars.
Star Wars/Disney should have given him more roles.
Sam Witmer could read me a shopping list and I'd be hooked on each purchase; a genius and clearly a fan of Star Wars.
He also said the Disney starters should be a separate timeline or non cannon same with mark hamill
He needs to be in more live action movies
Great advice for everything
Sam witwer and mark hamill could write a hell of a star wars movie
That's one of the biggest problem with the sequel, it's the empire vs. Rebellion all over again, in George Lucas' original plan there would have been another shift in tone; we would have had a new republic that should not be as corrupted as the previous one and an Maul's criminal organization that threatenes its stability. It would have been another new take on star wars.
Types of Drama displayed, orienting each trilogy:
Prequels- Action/Mystery
Originals- Family&Romance/Morality
Sequels- Nostalgia/Closure
Funny. I grew up with just the OT, same as Sam. And then the prequels came out, they were EXACTLY what I always expected. Strange how differently we can see things.
How many times do I need to watch this to see the "went off" part...
Which is why in my opinion, they didn't work.
can hear the people breathing lol god damn!
It's like poetry. It rhymes. 😉
Starkiller needs more everything even a face to face with reven
Yes!!!! ❤❤❤❤ Totally explains it like me
My bucket list: drive a tank(legally and without enlisting), wing suit, meet Sam Witwer.
“I learned a valuable lesson, try something new”
Ryan Johnstone or whatever the fuck is name is “I understand…new, new, new… what would be new…. I know. I’ll do what the fans DONT LIKE”
Ryan writing down incoherent nonsense “I’m so clever”
If only a single person at Disney had thought like this
Force unleashed is literally the thing that got me into Star Wars Sam Witwer is beyond legendary
Push yourself in a new failing direction so you never try tht again 😅
The animated series tied everything together pretty well.
The 1st star war movie that I saw in my life is the 'Phantom Menace ' loved the movie amd the rest of the prequel trilogy . There are those sequels and the prequels thats it
He did some amazing stuff in his time, but he will always be the guy who had a true team of people around him when he made star wars. He is great at big new adventures and painting a beautiful galaxy full of amazing stories. He needs his team to focus him though and keep him grounded in realism
I never hated the prequels. I loved them and saw all of them as they came out.
There was a lot of hate, but the wonder I had as a kid seeing the prequels was amazing. I loved the originals as a kid too.
Then after finding the darth jar-jar theory invigorated a new admiration and let me see the true depth of the story.
Im one of the rare fans that just loves star wars for star wars for the most part. I wasnt the biggest fan of luke in the sequels but i still enjoy the spectacle presented, and theyve made up for it by having really good shows. Now just give me a proper custom char live your life rpg in the universe and ill be happy
Prequel era is my favorite although the movies are just okay. The ideas in that era are the best hands down
My favorite character in the series is Padme’ Amidala and her death while tragic does her character a disservice in the sense that she is able to undermine the chancellor when she can which makes her a formidable opponent in the political arena shown multiple times and in her emotions falls for anakin on Naboo further surprising the chancellor by doing so. I’d like some honest feed back
That is not how fandom works. Just look at The Last Jedi. They trie to move on from the Skywalker Saga and well, the rest is history.
It's that mindset though that what's happened with Disney Star Wars happened.
never underestimate lord Starkiller’s knowledge
Filoni should take notes
People should have the same mentality about the sequels yes their different than what people expected but their still good movies
Dude i loved the prequels, i wasn’t a big fan of the racing shit but it was still awesome and the choreography was epic
This is me with Episode 8
Personally I loved them all (except 7,8,9) but the Disney tv shows are great
It took me 20 years to enjoy the prequels I was that guy that hated but the sequels humbled me.... I love the prequels now. They aren't perfect but they are more star wars than the sequels will ever be.
OGs were a darker time, the prequels were a brighter more vibrant time represented by the Jedi, then there’s that Kennedy period I can’t explain that. AT ALL!
I can’t believe anyone hates the prequels. I love them as a kid and I still like them.
The problem with the prequels isn't the world he built, it wasn't the overuse of CGI, it was the directing and dialogue and overuse of jar jar
Dialogue in Star Wars has always been shit
And the fact that the prequels are that different from the original trilogy makes order 66 that much more impactful
New direction doesn’t always mean the right direction
Disney out hear repeating itself from day one.
I've never seen someone so dedicated to pulling something decent out of a trash pile.
Bro is a big reason people like the prequels now. Clone wars made everything work so much better and his darth maul was amazing in kt
Canon be damned, Disney already crapped all over it, we need a live action Starkiller movie or even series, with a good writing team and a capable director, Witwer would hit it straight outta the park. I mean good old Star Wars stuff firing on all cylinders, this guy can make it happen.
I really want Sam to be in charge of Star Wars projects. I'm curious what him and a team could accomplish.
Whoever the sound guy was at this convention should be fired....
In order to transcend, you just go where you’ve never gone before

Not my IP of course but I would've much rather preferred George have kept it and simply made Filoni in charge of the whole operation for future content so that George can sit back and actually relax
This 100%. He should have kept it and been semi-retired while Dave took control of the day to day stuff.
This man is a legend and gives a freat perspective to how more people should watch the prequels.
One of the reasons the sequels were bad is because they copied a bunch of assets from the originals and just made them BIG. Thats all they did. Upscale the originals ideas and then poorly implement them. Among a dozen ither problems
