Unfortunately, I think that Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are perpetuating the myth that Doom was all about the metal. It never was. It is all about the atmosphere. Which is why this track and the track from Doom 2 Level 2 which is unfairly labeled "elevator music" sometimes, are among my favourite tracks.
This cover perfectly describes my feelings when playing this level like "Yes, the demons are firmly based here, you need to be vigilant and work hard to win." it's a cross between fear and oppression in the tracks of the second episode and the fast and loud metal of the first episode (although it also has creepy tracks and the atmosphere of the episode itself). I mean Doom is melancholy, it has action and horror, but it has a lot of melancholy, remember the track at the end of the episode, it seems to be a victory, but it does not cause joy. I used to think that Andrew Halshalt's covers perfectly create this atmosphere, but your covers on e3m4 and e1m3 are just something, in a good way
Thank you so much. ❤️ I agree with what you said, and good point. Doom is indeed melancholy and it’s melancholy in that lonesome ”it’s you against them” kind of way. E1M3 has always been a very suspenseful and ambiguous-sounding track for me. I think it’s one of those Doom tracks that reaches a special mood that’s hard to describe in words. It makes you cautious, curious, ready for an ambush, ambitious to figure out the secrets of this military facility. It’s the first calm after the initial chaos. You’re getting the hang of this, you’re not in immediate danger, but you *know* the demons are out there. It’s just a matter of being more clever and ruthless than they are. That’s E1M3 for me.
This sounds way better than the original and it feels extra dark and sinister. Seriously would play any doom game with covers like this. Don't get me wrong, the heavy metal bgm works too. This would also work great when you come across a potentially dangerous segment on maps, it can also be used as a mind game..play the sinister music before as you reach an area and when you get there play the sounds of demons as you go through and have some thrown in to attack, make the room flicker and images of demons that appear when the lights flick on (or appear for an instant and disappear) Sit back and watch people flip out and shoot off rounds at noises and things that aren't there.
Thanks so much! I like the idea you described, I think it could be a cool mod as well. And as for this particular track, this is one that always put me in a focused, waiting and suspended mood. "This area isn't too bad, but stay sharp and watch your back" kinda atmosphere. Just like you said - like a potentially dangerous segment.
@@ShreddingDragon I just thought of this, even the image of demon eyes will make people dump ammo at things that aren't there. So many great potentials can be done with this, you made gold here. I think there is a community that makes Doom WADS, its an idea to pitch to them and see where it goes. Give them the track and the idea for making a map around this.
I always felt the music from this game was epic. And I strongly feel the selection of the music tracks for maps E1M1, E1M2 and E1M3 were perfect: M1's track is fast and energic, inviting you to play. M2's track and level map let's you know M1 was a cakewalk intro level, but now we're getting down to business. And M3's track sets the atmosphere of the doom and gloom you will see for the remainder of the game. As for this cover, I love it, though I feel the glass harp sound in the original track is gloomier. The guitar gives the player hope, a sense of humanity which to cling on to when battling the demons from hell.
When I played Doom for the first time, I was surprised by how its music didn't sound all that heavy. Otherworldly, but not so brutal. I still kinda like it this way.
I feel like dark halls could have gone well with not just E1M3... It could have gone well with one of the levels from Episode 2, and with MAP13 or MAP16 of Doom 2.
Shredd you have an uncanny ability to really encapsulate the haunting atmosphere of DOOM. i feel like that element has been really lost in the new DOOM games and its a huge turn off for me ugh
That means so much to me. I love Doom so much, both old and new. But they are two separate worlds, two different kinds of love. For me the old Doom is where it’s at. Dark Halls is a track that really stuck in my mind as a suspenseful, strange mood after hearing it for the first time as a kid, playing Doom - on my uncle’s computer. 😂 It had an absolutely ghostlike sound to me. I had never heard anything quite like it before. Thank you and keep on rocking!
These are the good kinds of covers. Almost everyone else goes way too over the top with guitars and metal.
Yeah, the spirit of Doom is much about moods and suspense too.
Yes, I hate that.... covers have to be calm and subtle. I try to make mine very close to the original without too much adlibing.
This right here is why I reject the vast majority of remixes.

Big fan of synthwave and acid so this one's a plus.

This THE best Doom tune, some are downright annoying but this really makes you feel youre in peril.
Listened to a bunch and this is the best remix/cover for this song.
This is amazing! This is one of my favourite tunes ever - this is very good variation! Great work!
Thank you! Much appreciated! 🤟
Such an underated artist
