For about two years from 1961 until late 1962 I was a member of the Gunfire Support Training Unit with main offices at U.S, Naval Air Station at Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico, but under the direct command of the Commandant of the Tenth Naval District, We operatedr the naval ship gunnery and bombing range on Culebra Island that was on the opposite end of the island from the town of Dewey. Our observation post where I spent quite a bit of time was on a hilltop overlooking a beautiful crescent-shaped white sand beach, now called Flamenco Beach . I enjoyed lots of time on that beach and enjoyed several drinks at a small bar on a small bay in Dewey.
@@drivethrough7220 it all depends on the sargassum. Unfortunately this year most of the Caribbean was attacked by a huge blob of sargassum. My friends went in April and they said the sand was filled with it but the water was clean. Usually November and December would be picture perfect. June and July when sargassum is not around it looks amazing as well. I would go on Instagram and check the recent pictures to see how the conditions are. Hi there! I have a trip planned to PR soon. I plan to visit Culebra. When you arrive by ferry, do you need transportation to get to the Flamenco Beach? Or is it pretty walkable?
Hey Victoria! I hope you have an amazing time in celebration. Be sure to check everyday on the ferry website for the tickets because they sell out very quickly! You would need transportation unless you are willing to walk for an hour lol! It is walkable but don't do it in the hot sun. Just hop on a van for a $10 round trip or rent a golf cart or jeep in carlos jeep rental.

Another Pierluissi paid commercial , selling Puerto Rico as a safe heaven. Did you know that Flamenco beach was part of the U.S. NAVY bombing range for about 65 years? On the far end of the beach , opposing the Observation Post hill ,there is a military tank, that once was a target for bombing practices, so the whole Culebra island is not the safe heaven that the colonial government wants to sell to the world because of the danger of un exploded ammunition that neither the colonial government or the U.S. NAVY removed and destroyed .
I wish the governor paid me. Would be nice :) Puerto Rico is safe for tourism as long as you becareful. It seems we have another frustrated Puerto Rican who is against Americans enjoying what they own.
Yes, I was a member of the unit that operated that gunnery and bombing range back in the early 1960s when I was a young Navy sailor. The unit was named "The Gunfire Support Training Unit. in 1963 as a member of the ship's company my ship, the original USS The Sullivans DD537, visited the rang for gunnery practice. That ship is now a floating museum at the Erie & Buffalo County Marine Park in Niagara Falls New York. I recall that at one time Air Force B52s also used the bombing range for a short time while I was there. The navy mainly had us A4 aircraft for their bombing practice, often in the evening and often using napalm.
