Inspiring thoughts. "You are the only constant factor in your games, the only thing you can do is focus on improving your own performance."

Really great video. I've been steadily climbing from 3k-4k and recently I've been blaming my teammates too much and my progress has stagnated. Thanks for the reminder to focus on my own play and not other's. You rock. Cheers!

I'm watching this again as an inspirational video after being stuck at 4,6k this time. I think what you said here is very true and some parts can even be used as a metaphor for your real life like 'dont wait for better luck - instead be the changing factor in your life'. I would really appreciate more content from you of any kind. Maybe you find some time again since TI is over.

IMO the biggest problem with people is that they spam the strong heroes in the meta to gain points in a videogame, instead of trying to get better at the game, and believe it or not... have fun. But that's dota, after all, you cant have fun. Also, there's a lot of sad human beings in real life, that need to compensate so they spam Slark and Troll and whatnot. It is a mere coincidence most of them are Russian. Kappa.

I actually thinl that trench exists in a wierd way. Of coirse its not impossible to escape but i think if you are a 3 k player its harder for you to get out of two k than it is for a 4k player toget out of 3k as the games are more randomized on low levels and especially with the rubberband a bad teammate can feed away your snowball (atleast that got nerved) and therefore loose you the game. You should at least get 60% winrate and get out of trench but its hard to solo carry because everyone is so inconsistent and even if a guy usully plays 2k level he can just feed one game and ruin your game (had a jug who was 500points above me, went roaming after 5 minutes of safelanfreefarm because viper complainee about not getting farm on offlane, finished game 0 16 which i dont understand). The other thing is solo mmr as a support player. I play in a semi serious joindota team and my support is decent but it has no use supporting in 2k as even if you net your carry freefarm he feeds it away 50% of the time which makes your support effort redundant. This way i need to play carry or mid and im mediocre at best. If i had a reliable carry every game i could use my talents to climb but this way it will take me a while to midspam myself to a point where supporting matters as its not random if my carry knows what he is doing

  • @Andytlp
    @Andytlp 5 років тому

Theres very high skill mmr brackets in each 2 3 4 5 k mmr ranges but what the guy is probably talking about is that when u play in low mmr both teams are just utter trash.
Theres no semblance of intelligence. Any space youd make wont get used. Engages are won simply by numbers 5v4 5 wins. every time. An experienced player like 4-5k or someone with 10k plus hours in dota can easily read map.
In low mmr teamwork is just pointless. Do your own thing get objectives and use your allies as meatshields to get ahead. Also l ow mmr u cant learn anything from your teammates nor should you theres nothing to learn there. If someones bad play annoys you learn to ignore it. Play your own game. Dota is shit until about 4k.

Well said Blitz, I started being nicer in my ranked games a while back, I also started really trying, and surprise surprise I went up like 300 mmr in a week, about a 70% ranked winrate that month over 40 games etc, only played geroes I was great at not just good at and really looked at each game and gave constructive advice to my team (after I had proven I was a decent player) and you know, the amount of jugs I stopped going aghs with a quick explanation might have saved me 200 mmr in my life. I also noticed my team weren't actually worse than me like you said, just like me felt misunderstood etc. Anyway, gj man, I hope other people realise there is no trench like I did a while back but in their case thanks to you :)

I have a friend who looks toward their godlike streaks, feeders, and non-native speakers on THEIR team to justify "MMR is broken". I keep trying to tell him that just as many times they're on your team, they will be on the enemy team, but he still keeps telling me "MMR is broken." Then I offer to play on his account (i'm 4k hes 1.7k) and see if I can win every ranked game and he says of course I will because I'm "sumail".
Anyway, I'm curious if you're reading this, what is your opinion on this patch and do you hate sniper/axe as much as reddit does?

Blitz, I know you might not even see this, but I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I've always disagreed with my mmr for various reasons that weren't addressed in this video. For those reasons (and the the other common excuses stated here) I had stopped playing ranked for about 8 months. It stopped being enjoyable for me and I have been trying to better myself as a player in other ways. This has inspired me to give it another shot and just focus on my own play and not worry about others' mistakes as much as my own. Thank you!

The one thing that I think can be frustrating is the fact you can have people with radically different approaches. In the 4k+ people generally seem to want to win, and at least are playing with a moderate amount of tryhardness. The lower the MMR the more LMAO who cares people you run into. When you're looking at ranked as a way to improve your skill and MMR and you're stuck with a person who's playing a hero for 'fun' when his only experience with the hero is seeing cave paintings, I think that can lead to extra sturm und drang.

  • @TheMFudge
    @TheMFudge 9 років тому +1

I completely agree. I often find myself criticizing my teammates (not out loud since that seldom helps) and it ends up taking away from my focus. I had a dazzle game 2 months ago where I didn't spec grave until very later (even though we needed it) and after the game I realized that I was the scrub on my team that everyone hated because I did something really stupid. It's not only good to get that perspective but also understand when you messed up and why (needless to say I usually save a point now just so I can spec grave if needed). On a side note, recently I've been finding that the weakest part of my mid is the actual mid laning. The biggest issue I've identified is last hit timing. Getting them in a lobby is really easy but in a real game I find the enemy mid denies or pseudo-denies me alot of the time (by which I mean I'd be getting the last hit if there weren't someone with better timing against me). Is the answer to this just spam 1v1 with someone you know??

You raise a lot of good points and I do need to work a lot more on my individual play BUT
there are a few things I'd like you or someone of higher mmr to really talk about.
How do you feel about party mmr being mixed with regular mmr?
I've had plenty of games where I'm the solo 4kish person and a couple of people in a party usually one around 3.5 and the other 4k+ are on my team. I've had plenty of games where both random and just fuck around because they obviously don't give a shit about their party mmr which makes it significantly harder to win games on your own skill bracket.
Does it really even out by the enemy team just having those two assholes that throw the game once in awhile? I've been dipping in and out of 4k+ for awhile now and struggling quite a bit to progress. Some games feel super easy and win without trying or a teammate stomps mid for me, while others feel completely impossible no matter what I would have done.
The amount of games where I felt like I won because I got the position I feel most confident in and actually carried feel so few and far between all the other shit shows. I often win due to the same thing, some enemy guy gets mad and just feeds into tower for me. I don't really feel good about those wins or losses and I know they're unavoidable but they really do feel like what the majority of ranked games are for me.
At least 50% of the games I play someone feeds because they're mad and raging over chat, afks, or straight up abandons. I'm not a 5k player yet but I do find myself wondering if it's possible to climb a few hundred points still or if I have to make some kind of huge introspective adjustment to where I carry so hard it doesn't matter who afks anymore.
    www.dotabuff.com/players/167408870/matches?date=&hero=&skill_bracket=&lobby_type=ranked_matchmaking&game_mode=®ion=&faction=&duration=
300 matches played, my KDA is pretty much positive apart from a few rough or lucky patches. I don't go 20+ kills every game and I almost never go 20 deaths(maybe never?). I'm consistently going positive I think, so does that mean just my farming is bad? I'm not fully sure what to take away from this video other than watch replays and try to figure it out yourself.
If your team picks 4 cores, do you just suck it up and play support even if it's not a role you're good at ? In order to raise your MMR should you just always be willing to bite the bullet and take the role no one else wants(usually support or offlane) or should you just say fuck everyone and call mid to try and carry regardless of what shitty team comp you might end with?
I've been trying to work at getting better with supporting because I feel like I generally perform well enough as a carry but if I'm forced into any other role I struggle and the game becomes a coin flip based on which team has a better draft or who got the better carry player on their team. That said I've also read a lot on why support is the wrong role to be picking to try and raise mmr too - Juice pretty much proved in those playdota threads that it was the most ineffectual role to be climbing with.
So I'm considering trying to be more flexible for my team in terms of picks, but is that really something I should even be doing if I feel more skilled than they are? Like if I'm the high mmr, should I really be playing my weakest role as a support just because they're greedy or should I be just trying to compete for farm with them and carry anyway?
I'd be curious to hear the stories of your most problematic games and how you overcame them in the ones you actually managed to win.

Hey Blitz, thanks for the video. It was pretty enlightening. I was wondering about high MMR players; I'm 3.2k and I tend to play hard support. To learn my heroes, I checked Dotabuff and looked for the higher ranked players for the heroes I wanted to play. But in highlight videos and whatnot, videos of players like w33 and Miracle- show up and they're playing cores and perform fantastically pretty routinely, hence the high MMRs. Are there players like that for supports? We obviously don't see videos about them that much, since support and all, but are there pubstar supports? Anyway, thanks for the video, if you see this comment, love your work, have a nice day!

i am a 5.5k + supportplayer and what i hate about my bracket is that you kinda have to play mid or safelane carry to win games. I think its because on those roles you dont rely that much on your mates. As a support who wants to do stuff in the game you have to communicate a lot with your mates and this makes you vulnerable. The lack of communication and teamplay rly makes me mad sometimes...If im the lowest mmr though and the game is at 6 k mmr averege then the games are fun again as a support but when i am the highest its rly sad. And btw nice vid blitz! keep up the good work =)

    • @chaospig222
      @chaospig222 9 років тому +2

Pauleomg Yep pretty much agree with you there, its actually pretty hard to win mid 5k games on support when your cores at low 5k/high 4k. At the same time I think that's pretty much the same with every bracket, to really carry a game on support you need to work well with your other support and communicate a lot which is pretty much absent from most pub games.

I purposely fed & trolled in 50 or 60 out of my games and then I started playing seriously. I won all 10 of my solo calibration matches and was placed @ 600 MMR. I climbed 300 MMR spamming Troll & Juggernaut. Now I only get 7 to 15 MMR per win and I lose 17 to 50. To win games I have to buy boots of travel and do 5 to 6k tower damage every game while everyone feeds. My normal matchmaking MMR is higher than my ranked matchmaking MMR now so I don't even bother to play ranked. When I play core my XPM averages 350 to 600 while my GPM averages 400 to 600.

    Alright Blitz:
First of all, here is my Dotabuff www.dotabuff.com/players/124854337
You say players need to be consistently good in their matches (having a winrate >50%) in order to climb MMR. So basically everybody that is/feels stuck on the trench is inconsistent and needs to get away from only counting the games where they performed (exceptionally) well.
In general this statement is true but you need to acknowledge that Dota is not consistent itself. That's where the games beauty relies in. Every game is different.
And that is the point. Every game is different, starting with the picks.
The lower you are in MMR, the shittier your teams picks will be (in general): either too greedy with five cores and no support
I just recently moved and am now playing on the perfect world servers.
PA is among my most played Heroes, because when I started playing Dota, I loved DAS DAMAGE :D anyways, PA is hero with which its hard to be bad, because, well you know why.
Now check out the matches on first page. I was safelaning with a Lina, a Sniper and a Lesh respectively. The only consistent thing about these three guys was that they were equally bad at helping to win the lane.
When I got calibrated, I started at 3,3k MMR and I just reached a new all-time low at 2,6k.
This either means that everyone has gotten significantly better than me and the median of MMR has not shifted, so my loss in MMR is just an adjustment OR that I am stuck in the trench and will never be able to enjoy a Dota-match where it's actually ten people that at least know how to play the game versus each other because of my inability to carry four noobs to victory albeit being hindered by them.
/end of my rant. climbing mmr is frustrating. if you started crying over my dotabuff plx coach :D
    p.s.: upload moar shit.
p.p.s.: pls do not look at the storm spirit game. naix left at around 5 minutes into the game and I didn't realize we'd be lacking damage late-game and i built retarded items.

  • @PigBosley
    @PigBosley 9 років тому

There are two major reasons why the MMR system in dota is fucked.
    1) It takes a crazy long time to climb. If I win 6 games, and lose 4, I gain 50 mmr. Therefore, If I feel like I am a 4k player, but am only at 3.5k mmr, I would have to play about 100 games to get to my "true mmr". That is, as an estimate, about 70 hours of actual game play. That is a ridiculous expectation to climb such a negligible amount.
You talked about CS:GO in the video, which has a very reasonable mmr system. Me personally, I went from nova 4 ( ~3k in dota, probably less), all the way up to DMG ( ~4k in dota, probably more) by try-harding for like a month, maybe playing 15 games a week MAX. I feel like this is a much more reasonable time frame.
    2) Dota is a team based game, and it often comes down to which team is worse, not which is better. If I have 2 trolls/complete idiots, and they only have 1, they will almost always win that game. And you are right, There are definitely things I can do to make the win more likely, but I am only able to have so much game impact on a team of 5. In dota, unless you are a mid god, you will not be able to carry games, especially not with the new rubber band mechanic.
Going back to CS:GO, again, I feel like this game has a better competitive environment. First of all, dota has like 10x the trolls CS does. There will rarely be someone who purposefully throws the game, In fact, I have never seen it. This is obviously not true in Dota. Secondly, You will be able to carry CS games if you are the undeniably best player. In dota, wins come from a competent players each filling specific roles and creating space for each other. In CS, Winning comes from clicking better than the other team can.
TL;DR: The sheer amount of time required to climb, coupled with the immature Dota community, makes climbing more of a crap shoot than a test of skill.

I'm 4.2k and I played on my friends 2k account. This was the result:
    www.dotabuff.com/players/178683074
Every game after the last Lion game is mine. The only game I lost, in which I was 15-5-15 or smth, was again my fault for not killing their carry a couple times and he ended up with 900 gpm because our lane completely fed. The big shortcoming was that we didn't have a courier.
Anyways even that game was winnable by me. I'm not a Storm player and I'm not a mid player, I'm a 4.2k support and you see the result.

Hm, I don't fully agree with this. While what you said about doing something wrong myself instead of my team makes a lot of sense to me and I fully agree with that, I can't really agree with you about what you said in the Beginning. My winrate in "Very High Skill" Pool is about 10% higher then in "Normal Skill" and 5% higher then "High Skill", so who does this happen. Also when I'm playing on my Smurf ~4.5k I win more games. I also noticed that its much more fun to play sup in higher Skill Levels as you get something back from securen the lanes for your team rather then securing free farm for your carry so that he can get Power Treads in min 15. I don't know, climbing in 4k seems completely different to me then climbing in 3k.

In 9/10 it just feels I have some knowledge other don't have around 3-3,5k. Lets see if I can improve more:)

    Two things though Blitz:
    1. If you are the consistent factor in your games, why does the outcome differ every time (Losses, wins)
    2. You can say that in 200 games you can't have shitters every game, however, you only need half of those games to be shitters for you to not be able to progress.
I'm not saying I disagree with the notions you're making. However, climbing high MMR requires you to play high impact heroes, you know this just as well you filthy storm spirit spammer.

im so frustrated with MMR, when the system came out i didnt give a shit about anything, i went YOLO on most games, always played support (even though im a carry player) cause NO ONE would ever pick that and i always tried to think on the team´s needs, and got really mad every game seeing how bad my cores were, some time after i calibrated my mmr i actually got to 5k, my friends always said i had good mmr but i didnt even know how good that was, i had no idea, i only played for fun at the time. some months later i saw myself at 4.1k so i decided ''ok its time to play carry and carry alone'' and still got to 3.8 (the lowest i ever got). I dont wanna be that guy that says ''fuck! my team this... my team that...'' but i actually had a really BAD run on this MMR rollercoster. Anyway, i really regret not taking Ranked games serious when it came out, i follow the competitive scene since Dota1, i play the game for 9 years now, have played in alot of small local tournaments( yes i know that doesnt mean shit ty) and i can honestly say i dont deserve my mmr im currently at 4037 mmr, won 8 out of my last 10 games, but getting back at the 5k trench is just to much of a job for me :(
yes, i can link dotabuff :)

I'll have to agree with you, I calibrated 3.5 originally. When the compendium came out with the all hero challenge, I didn't know it could be done in non ranked. So I dropped to 2.8k by the time I finished. Out of frustration I took a break from Dota. So I came back a couple months ago, and stuck around 2.8k +-. In the past week I've plummeted to 2500, and I feel its due to the added stress of graduating in the next week along with dropping below 50% win rate.
I've been picking badly, and making bad decisions on ganks if I'm in that position. If I'm support (though there is only 5 support in most games now), I'll stop buying wards out of frustration from the carries not performing well and believing I need to carry a game with a support character that has no farm the first 20 mins. Hopefully I can convince myself to take another break until I graduate and have a clearer head. Then make the right choices and rise again.

The thing about Dota's MMR system, which is rife with inbuilt Elo Hell enforcers, is that a player's winrate is often inversely proportional to his game impact (assuming low current MMR gap).
    www.dotabuff.com/players/107244606
I kept feeding as Meepo and still managed to win games.
Then there are games like www.dotabuff.com/matches/1411545493 where my team just suck.
Even in the games where I carried my team to victory, my team still feels very shitty: www.dotabuff.com/matches/1413780071 and www.dotabuff.com/matches/1422086196.
Apparently, having a low game impact (or rather, a perceived low game impact) is actually helpful to a elo hell complainer's winrate.
I guess the reason why is because there is only so many kills on the map, and so much farm on the map, and by taking them, I am depriving my team of those kills and farm.

But my issue is a little different rite now. My mmr use is not decided yet. But I have played against bots and practiced. Seen numerous professional matches. I don't argue about mmr thing, but I get players who don't know laning. It's always dual lanes. With guys pushing the lanes and all. Not letting carry farm. And yeah feed alot. There mite be few matches I ended up feeding. One match was playing sniper mid and pa shows up and stays. Taking the last hits or spoiling them not really sure. And ended up giving bara and razor 4 kills back to back. But if I were mid that wouldn't have happened. How can I save myself 4m these.

I have a short point to make. Sure, it is your skill that matters. If you're at 1000 mmr or 2k under your actual skill, surely you have no excuse to not climb it. But If you're let's say 400mmr under your perceived skill level and you're not tryhard enough to make the needed difference to carry your team, does this mean that is your actual mmr or does it need to be 400 points higher. ; )
On a side note: My story is got matched 3100 when mmr came (was new to dota and bad (still bad)), climbed easy to 3700 then stayed 3700-3900 for a loooong time. Trying to play core, but everybody does that, you fight with people and you lose. Decided to change approach, spammed disruptor 10 games, won 9 of them and got above 4k.

I Find that the reason that my MMR may not be where it is at, 2.4K and proud that it is not because i am that bad, i may forget some simple things, but i find that it is because i play ranked when i want to play ranked. I play when i feel i am going to win so if i go into a game too confident i will lose. The solution i found was to play ranked constantly, since i have a positive W/L ratio my mmr will go up. Since i started to do this i rased 400 mmr in solo and 400 in party.(i was at 2000 and 2200)

Holy crap, this was such an incredible and eye opening video! This past TI6 I thought you were such an incredible caster and thought I would check out your UA-cam channel and was a little disappointed because it was all Storm Spirit stuff (a hero I don't really play, but damn I think I might give him a hearty try now!) and I saw this video.
I am one of those players who has been struggling to get to at least 4k, I go between 3.7 and 3.4, and I usually have a great positive attitude, but have recently been getting games that tilt me. And I have complained and blamed my team mates and so forth. I look forward to playing some ranked games now and having a better look at what I do.
My favorite part of the video is you talking about Purge, I have been considering not playing pos 4 and 5 anymore because my carriers always seemed to suck. But knowing it's possible to climb through the ranks as those positions I will continue my omni and cm games and I will place better wards, and harass better and make those pulls.
    Thank you for the inspiration!

I think another problem with players like us get low mmr is that we hop into ranked matches as soon as we hit level 13 or 15 with 100-150 hours of gameplay experience you cannot be good at that game.
So starting mmr early is also a mistake i guess.

Those are good points and i agree with blitz, BUT :
1:I still would love to see an MMR reset option or seasons, (like in sc2, hots) because i havent played ranked for more than a year. (naybe even since one month after its release)
And i dont want to grind anymore and play at a much lower level than normaly, but people seem obsessed with bashing MMRs that are lower than theirs. ( or friends that will rather play in very high skill than high/normal)
2: I made an account for my sister and watched her play her first game. She played against a shadow fiend that hit all razes all game long. When i played my first game i bought a platemail instead of boots and finished the game 0-20. And she plays against a shadowfiend that looks 5k. ( much better than in my games)
3: How are stacks in solo que fair? They never seem to be able to balance the bigger skill differences. for me it doesnt mater anymore, since i moved away from dota and have less time. But since dota 2 got so popular, it is a scary thought to see new players move into this frustratd flaming community.
tl:dr i d love to see a real solo que, a better smurf detction and mmr ranked seasons like in other games

I mostly agree with you,but i dont think you should ever mute your whole team. I think that gaining MMR is also a lot about your own attitude in the game. I'm currently at 1.5k, calibrated at 1.1 and went down to a flat 1k at a time. Do i think i belong into this mmr range? No. But i do understand why i got placed there in the first place. When i started playing dota i had no idea what i was doing. I'm actually ashamed of my early games because i was just bad. But when i calibrated in ranked i was quite pissed because i thought that i was better than everyone else on my team. So i was like "i'm conna carry because my teammates are idiots". And guess what: I got stuck because i focussed somuch on how bad my teammates were that i fucked up my own game. But then i started changing my attitde. I started picking the heros my team actually needed. So i ended up playing a lot of support and i actually started winning games and got to 1.5 pretty quick with a winrate in ranked of about 70%. Justbelive in your teammates and try to give helpful advice. Start making the calls on coordinating your team.Even if your team consists of you + 4 russians (i play Eu West myself) they often listen to what you say IF you are friendly and actually make good calls. You would be surprised how many of these russians then actually start speaking english over the voice chat. So even if i think i play better than my teammates and i often have really bad players on my team, i'm slowly but surely getting where i think i belong(but that might take a long time since i dont play verry much)

i'm hardly past the 3min mark but I wanted to comment on what you said about cs go ranks. I'm an Eagle and i'm almost always top fragging but i lose about 40% of my games ( rough estimate). Does this mean I shouldn't be higher ? Well, I don't think so. I stack with some badge, supreme masters, and mge. In some cases, the mge out plays the badge or even sm on plenty occasions. Consistency is key, no argument there but going up the ranks in dota is just a pain because people are just plain assholes in almost every tier. Especially from 3.5 to 6k people just don't seem to get any better and it's a shock that they ever get so high and we have to deal with the same type of people once every(other) game.

Had this idea of just muting ppl in-game and went from 3k to 3.5k in like 3 weeks (than the patch hits and i loose 8 games straigth cause i missunderstuud the new meta but whatever)
I feel like it helps to minimize distractions if u are sure ur underranked.
For example my 3k's are willing to deffend a T2 when enemy just killed rosh and 5 mans for it and lets say 1 of our teammates is down. If u go deff u prob loose this fight in 80% of all cases (or even more). So i went on for some splitpush at another lane, just do get some farm and be usefull, i dont consider standing around and watching 5 ppl hitting ur tower when u can do shit against it as usefull.
But like 90% of all ur 3k pubs will start pinging and flaming u for reasons i actually dont understand.
And this is a distraction u can eliminate, just by muting teamates, just to trust ur own decisions and play like u think its the right way.
If u can force a rotation and after that go deffend, ur chances of winnign the fight are much higher.
And if u loose u can still look at ur games and check if u are presuring at the right times and the right objektives.
So overall i agree with u and can say that this way of climbing is proven

You cant compare CS to Dota, because in CS you can still win 1vs5 even if you have only 1 hp left. In Dota you cant just 1 shot HS your enemies in 1sec, there's a lot more things involved and that's why personal skill matter less than in CS.

  • @jpchris96

While I do understand what you're saying, i still don't understand how you can completely disregard teammates at low MMR. If i first pick a support, the rest of my team will position one heroes, and as a result my team's faceless and AM both get 35 minutes battlefurys and we lose the game. If i pick a carry, the rest of my team also picks carries, and then i have no farm and no kill potential and we lose. Or, which is was happens just as often, our first 3 picks will be shadow sharman, a pudge and cm, so i will pick a hard carry. the last pick will be sniper who demands mid from pudge, who says no, so i end up with sniper because neither CM or SS want to come safelane, even after i beg them. This is my life in the trench.

I have gone from 2273 to 3067 party mmr in the past year and a half which is sort of slow but I have school, and I agree a lot with what you said about self improvement but I also find you can improve yourself by knowing how to communicate with a team. For example lower mmr teams are often afraid to push objectives because they are scared of throwing but its easier to take rosh in lower mmr's so rosh has huge value so often if you do rosh just for peace of mind for your team they will play a lot better and it can win games. Tricks like this and calling out where the enemy is and what you should do can help win games a lot because you can give direction to a team that normally just run around and farm or feed trying to get pickoffs with no vision.

Fair point about not tilting and concentrating on your own faults but you are speaking as a mid who can play and win solo. Communication is absolute key if you play a non-carry and need your team mates to win team fights. If you are better than your MMR, you will climb agreed, but that will be much, much slower if you don't learn to calmly influence and guide poor decision making for the rest of team.
