I met a woman from Wales, in Haymarket Virginia of all places. I was on a business trip and she was the hotel manager. Very nice lady. She asked me where I was from and was genuinely interested. I saw her the next day and she actually researched where I was from and had talking points about it too. Never had somebody take that much interest into my hometown.
I'm living in Wales now and I confirm Welsh people are very nice and friendly. I love the Welsh language! I can speak Cymraeg, though far from fluent. What, the Chinese girl said it's not rainy in winter? Not true at all. Actually, Caerdydd is one of the wettest cities in the UK. By the way, it's very difficult for a Chinese speaker to realise that Wales is a country.
The Irish tribes of the Eoghanachta, Ui Liathan, Ui Fidgenti, Ciannachta, Éile, Dealbhna, Luighne and Gaileanga were originally from the kingdom of Deira in Celtic Britain. Many of us Irish are originally from Wales. Cymru am Byth!

The Anglo-Saxons assimilated the native Britons (Welsh), and this created the English people. Welshmen always say "Saxon", but I stopped reminding them the Welsh still live in England.. Shropshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, down to South and South-West, the Britons mixed with the Anglo-Saxons. Many of us have the common "Davies / Jones" surnames. So Englishmen will think positively of Wales. I would marry a Welsh woman, and I am an Englishman 🤷♂️

I can understand disagreeing on political grounds or even outdated cultural norms but hating a whole country or people of certain nationalities is incredibly jarring and weird to me. I've been fortunate enough to have met people from all over the world and I've had both good and bad experiences and that's just the human experience.

It's still happening, the biggest one is were not a recognised country but a principality of England, that means we aren't allowed to self govern or make our own choices. Theres a reason why the royal family has Welsh titles like the prince of Wales. There isn't a prince of Scotland title as they are recognised as a country seperate from England. It also goes back to the Welsh not being able to govern ourselves so we need to royal family to govern us, this is history but the English government still has total power over Wales. Another thing is the union jack as England, Scotland and Northern Ireland all have reprisentation in the flag but Wales has no recognition officially. This is mostly current stuff and not the load of history that would take years to go through.
I don't know why they don't like England because when I was living in England I've noticed that English men used to support and watch Wales playing in Six Nations more than other teams.
Historical reasons, mostly. We get along pretty well nowadays but England is technically our historical oppressor (Edward's Conquest of Wales, Henry VIII's Laws in Wales Act and the Welsh Not are primary examples).

OK, but those politicians don't appear out of nowhere, they're also not just from London, but from all over the country, they just work in London. Same with Daily Mail, Torygraph, etc. And their voters and readers are too.

I did visit Wales once in my life back in 2009 and I loved it sooo much! It’s crazy how Wales is not talked much and it’s always England and Scotland! I'd like to go to Wales. Super Furry Animals (band) are from there. That's as much as I know about Wales I'm afraid. Know they have celtic heritage, Swansea is from there, Anthony Hopkins....dunno much else. But I always got a chiller vibe from them than the other UK people :)

As an Englishman, I have to say I love Wales and it's people. been many times north and south Wales, people in the north of Wales are lovely folk. it doe not bother me in the slightest when the Welsh they they hate or dislike the English, they have their reasons and I would not or don't hold that against them. it's funny they say that but they usually always make me feel very welcome.
I dont remember the US becoming an enemy of Wales. I wonder if any of them have traveled anywhere outside NY, FL, Cali or Austin, Texas since thats about the only places most international travelers go to.
Yeah, sadly most foreigners get their perspective of America through the media. Usually when they come and see outside of cities, then they start to really enjoy it here. Many just think America is extremely “racist” and “hateful” but as a Native American I love it here and I love my fellow American people.

I don't like to think Scotland is the best, or better than any other place (because this varies from person to person, we like what we like). But I will say Scotland suits me, unlike the USA. I prefer our more balanced view of life vs work, our working rights and protections, our social programs, healthcare, and civil rights. A republican from Texas wouldn't like my country, and I wouldn't like theirs.

Wales is the only place my husband recieved anti-English sentiment. He's visited Ireland several times but the people were lovely, and they more than anybody have a reason to dislike the English! Saying that I'm sure most Welsh people are lovely.

First, It's bell ends who have slagged Scotland off (Jeremy Vine and so on), constantly on national TV, for decades, TV that Scottish licence fee payers have to pay for too. It's also the sort of voting person that votes for Reform and UKIP and Tories who believe they have some divine right to rule over the whole of the UK, not just England, and even the small amount of democracy we have here in Scotland, through devolution, they hate that and oppose it and want to take it away. They went us under direct London rule, where 92% of the lawmakers there are not Scottish. We don't have our own media, and it's constantly "England and friends" on the BBC and so on. Especially, but not exclusive to sports, like the Euros. They treat it like everyone in Britain's routing for the England team. Despite three of the four countries they're airing in, not being England. It's the print press which regularly degrades other countries in the union in ways they never do about the whole of England. It's those who're even well-intentioned and might say they like Scots and Welsh, but then compare my whole damn country to an English county, like Yorkshire. Scotland's every bit the country that England is, thank you very much. If size makes one country more of a country than another, then I guess Germany is more of a country than the UK. They say shiyte like "we're all the same", which sounds very much like trying to erase my culture and nationality.Just like when they banned the Scottish language (students were beaten in school for speaking it) and other things like the kilt. It's the English/Westminster parliament that took the Scottish government to court, recently, to make it clear that Scotland has no say over its own future, without the permission of Westminster, again, which is 85% English and 92% non-Scottish. The absolute majority of Scots voted for pro-independence parties in 2021. Parties that had a referendum as part of their mandate. The people of Scotland voted for that mandate, and Westminster told us our voice is irrelevant. Do you think the English would put up with a foreign parliament, that was 92% non-English, to tolerate such a system for centuries? And then be called racists for not liking it? I hate I cannot visit Wales because UK government decided to put visa to my country in 2022 when back then we could travel there no problem. So thanks crappy country I am for making this impossible anymore. I am not going to spend 120 pounds for only 6 months when I can spend that for an American visa and lasts 10 years.

Even though some of us Welsh speakers get daily verbal abuse from people "over the border" when we use our language, we definitely dont hate them. Theyre not being abusive towards us because they're English, theyre being abusive because theyre as£h0les. Elmet was part of the Old North, The Welsh identified the kingdoms of the Old North as fellow "Cymry". I reckon people in Wales had a rivalry with the Romano British "establishment in what is now England since way before the Angles showed up anyway! I don't think the tribes in lowland England were much like those in Wales once the Romans set up shop. As an English person, I was expecting them to say England. Can't blame them at all. We really dragged Scotland and Wales down with our politics and Brexit. And we're now the laughing stock of Europe. No wonder they're so infuriated with us.
Just know that it doesn't extend to you as individuals. I take each person as I find them, no matter where they are from. I want independence not because I hate anyone, but because I would prefer a government that is elected by my own country. They'll still be corrupt, and crap, but they'll be within reach, and we can replace them when they need to go.
I'm more than happy with anyone from England moving to Wales if they feel something for the land and culture. It is important though that we recover our language, culture and political independence.

Your first problem is thinking your heritage mean anything to the Welsh. Irish, Polish, German, Scottish etc, too. Americans do this, and the rest of the world thinks it's weird. If you are interested in your family history, that's fine. But some Americans think it makes them actually Scottish/Irish/Welsh by blood. That's not how it works. If it did, we'd all be African. Since that's where we all evolved, and we were there for hundreds of times longer than people have been in Europe and the rest of the world.

As an Englishman living in Gwynedd, these responses do not surprise me. They hate England, the English, but dont really know why and don't care. Although they regularly take a trip over the border to use and enjoy all the facilites England has to offer. By no means is this the majority of the Welsh, but disappointing none the less.

I can understand disagreeing on political grounds or even outdated cultural norms but hating a whole country or people of certain nationalities is incredibly jarring and weird to me.
I've been fortunate enough to have met people from all over the world and I've had both good and bad experiences and that's just the human experience.

It's still happening, the biggest one is were not a recognised country but a principality of England, that means we aren't allowed to self govern or make our own choices. Theres a reason why the royal family has Welsh titles like the prince of Wales. There isn't a prince of Scotland title as they are recognised as a country seperate from England. It also goes back to the Welsh not being able to govern ourselves so we need to royal family to govern us, this is history but the English government still has total power over Wales. Another thing is the union jack as England, Scotland and Northern Ireland all have reprisentation in the flag but Wales has no recognition officially. This is mostly current stuff and not the load of history that would take years to go through.

I don't know why they don't like England because when I was living in England I've noticed that English men used to support and watch Wales playing in Six Nations more than other teams.
Historical reasons, mostly. We get along pretty well nowadays but England is technically our historical oppressor (Edward's Conquest of Wales, Henry VIII's Laws in Wales Act and the Welsh Not are primary examples).

I did visit Wales once in my life back in 2009 and I loved it sooo much! It’s crazy how Wales is not talked much and it’s always England and Scotland! To be honest being from the valleys of wales the vast majority would say england there. Cardiff is probably the least welsh place in wales.

I was in Pontarddulais one time when this African student went missing from Swansea, his family approached me & this old dude at the bus stop asking if we'd seen him (they were putting posters up). Yeah, sadly most foreigners get their perspective of America through the media. Usually when they come and see outside of cities, then they start to really enjoy it here. Wales is the only place my husband recieved anti-English sentiment. He's visited Ireland several times but the people were lovely, and they more than anybody have a reason to dislike the English! Saying that I'm sure most Welsh people are lovely.

A bit of a rant, but here are some reasons. feel free to ignore, it's quite long.
First, It's bell ends who have slagged Scotland off (Jeremy Vine and so on), constantly on national TV, for decades, TV that Scottish licence fee payers have to pay for too. We pay their salaries for them to insult us on British TV.
Ironically, it's people like them who falsely claimed Scots don't like English people, that actually soured me towards England. It was JUST about independence, until they started regularly insulting us on TV and in the papers.
Then there are the prats in Westminster who do Scotland dirty, and have done for centuries. Even just this week, Boris Johnson, " the Scots loved quarantine because they had an excuse to not go to work." Liz Truss did the same, said she'd ignore our First Minister, because she doesn't align with their politics. These people in Westminster talking down Scotland, are in charge of Scotland's trade, business, and other matters. How can we trust anything they do?
It's also the sort of voting person that votes for Reform and UKIP and Tories who believe they have some divine right to rule over the whole of the UK, not just England, and even the small amount of democracy we have here in Scotland, through devolution, they hate that and oppose it and want to take it away. They went us under direct London rule, where 92% of the lawmakers there are not Scottish.
We don't have our own media, and it's constantly "England and friends" on the BBC and so on. Especially, but not exclusive to sports, like the Euros. They treat it like everyone in Britain's routing for the England team. Despite three of the four countries they're airing in, not being England.
It's the print press which regularly degrades other countries in the union in ways they never do about the whole of England.
It's those who're even well-intentioned and might say they like Scots and Welsh, but then compare my whole damn country to an English county, like Yorkshire.
Scotland's every bit the country that England is, thank you very much. If size makes one country more of a country than another, then I guess Germany is more of a country than the UK. They say shiyte like "we're all the same", which sounds very much like trying to erase my culture and nationality.Just like when they banned the Scottish language (students were beaten in school for speaking it) and other things like the kilt.
It's the English/Westminster parliament that took the Scottish government to court, recently, to make it clear that Scotland has no say over its own future, without the permission of Westminster, again, which is 85% English and 92% non-Scottish. The absolute majority of Scots voted for pro-independence parties in 2021. Parties that had a referendum as part of their mandate. The people of Scotland voted for that mandate, and Westminster told us our voice is irrelevant.
There's so much more, but it's 6am, it's already a long rant, and I haven't had my coffee, but this is just scratching the surface.
Do you think the English would put up with a foreign parliament, that was 92% non-English, to tolerate such a system for centuries? And then be called racists for not liking it? They left the EU for something far, far, far less than that.

I hate I cannot visit Wales because UK government decided to put visa to my country in 2022 when back then we could travel there no problem. As an English person, I was expecting them to say England. Can't blame them at all. We really dragged Scotland and Wales down with our politics and Brexit. And we're now the laughing stock of Europe. No wonder they're so infuriated with us.
Just know that it doesn't extend to you as individuals. I take each person as I find them, no matter where they are from. I want independence not because I hate anyone, but because I would prefer a government that is elected by my own country. They'll still be corrupt, and crap, but they'll be within reach, and we can replace them when they need to go.

Your first problem is thinking your heritage mean anything to the Welsh. Irish, Polish, German, Scottish etc, too. Americans do this, and the rest of the world thinks it's weird.
If you are interested in your family history, that's fine. But some Americans think it makes them actually Scottish/Irish/Welsh by blood. That's not how it works. If it did, we'd all be African. Since that's where we all evolved, and we were there for hundreds of times longer than people have been in Europe and the rest of the world.

Being Irish and living in England (Manchester) 24 years, passing through Holyhead in North Wales on SailRail when I go home to extended family in Ireland (Dublin) on visits, I love Wales and the Welsh people - and Welsh men are also very handsome-looking too 🇮🇪☘️🏴😍😍😍😍😍
As an Englishman living in Gwynedd, these responses do not surprise me.
They hate England, the English, but dont really know why and don't care.
Although they regularly take a trip over the border to use and enjoy all the facilites England has to offer.
By no means is this the majority of the Welsh, but disappointing none the less.
It’s hardly surprising they feel this way.
As a Czech person, I would say "Germany"...
