I own a 2016 sequoia. It's got the 5.7, leather wrapped steering, and guess what....I can lock the diffs. Sucks gas, but it's got balls and dependable. Hope they keep making it, they never advertise it.
As much as I like Toyota, I think it’s kinda lame that you pay $50K+ for an off road truck, and you don’t get a true locker.

I have those exact same tires on my Z-71 Silverado, and they actually perform surprisingly well for a non-agressive tire off the beaten path. The best part is how smooth and quiet they are on the highway. Great test guys!

@@philtripe The skid is steel. The gas TANK is plastic - underneath the skid. The OEM skids aren't all that great - but they work perfectly for this kind of use. If you're headed through the Rubicon - you'll want something more durable for sure. The LC200 has legit thicker gauge steel skids that are perfectly at home rock crawling - but the LC200 also weighs more than a Tundra. It's a heavy pig.

Tires make all the difference...the tires on that Tundra were literally all-season tires. Those Michelin's just won't cut it in serious mud or snow. Maybe some Goodyear Duratracs?

I have a 2018, TRD limited and love it. I live in PA and have the same tires. Through the last couple snow storms they are surprisingly good. I will be switching to a set of Goodyear Duratrac's as soon as these wear down, but all in all not a bad tire at all. I love this truck, i've owned many fords and gm's, and yes GM and Ford have nicer interiors and more high tech features available... but each and every one of those I spent many visits to the dealerships. This toyota is just rock solid. It works, it does everything well, even as the oldest design on the market right now I would pick my toyota time and time again over the competition. Anyone that talks bad about a toyota hasn't owned one. Once you go toyota it's hard to want to go back to anything else. Did I mention this motor is a beast!
Exactly my comparison. Interior is functional, not dated as such. Sure could use lots of outlets but are you driving or texting? Like the style. Looks big but not oversized. The style will age well. Not so sure about the same year GMC/Chevy. Don't want lots of dealer issues although by Colorado has been pretty much reliable except for the crappy headlights and seats.

Gentlemen, I happened to watch this video last night while researching possible replacements for my 2013 Ram 1500. Given the snowy conditions, like you, I was impressed with TRD Pro Tundra's performance running all three stages of the route successfully. It's actually even more impressive when you consider that you managed it with an open rear differential. You mention the Tundra's Auto-LSD at one point as one of the traction control aids the truck offers in addition to a 2-speed transfer case. However, unless something has changed recently (as in the year or two) the Auto-LSD feature wasn't a factor in your success.
The Toyota Auto-LSD operates only in 2WD mode, not in 4WD. While it is a traction improvement tool situationally, on slick highways or on a wet boat ramp when in 2WD, it's not helpful in the situation you guys tackled in the video. I see lots of comments to the effect that it doesn't have a "true locker". In truth, when in 4WD mode, it has no locker of any kind. I also see comments about the on-road biased on-road/off-road Michelins. Both true. But abra cadabra, you got where you were going and it actually looked kind of easy. Well done.
In the larger context, all modern (I use "modern" charitably in the Tundra's case) full-sized pickups are handicapped off road anyway - they have big breakover angles and substantial width. I'm reminded of that fact every time I lose a side stirrup to a boulder or listen to the nails-on-chalkboard sound of creosote branches removing long stripes of paint from my doors and fenders. If my main pursuit was off-roading, I would not pick a big truck to do it. When I off road it's almost always to get someplace hard to reach to do some other activity like archaeological surveys, take a backcountry hike, photograph something under just-the-right light, observational astronomy, etc. For all of these things big cargo capacity is a must. The Tundra has big second row cargo space and with a shell, big enough bed cargo space.
It has slowly crept up my list from the very bottom (on account of the usual gripes - no locker, horrendous fuel economy, last-century gear box, etc.). For my intended use it's better than my current truck - better ground clearance, fancier factory suspension with the Fox set-up, LED headlamps and fog lights, much better range-per-tank with it's 38 gallon fuel tank (my Ram has the stock 26 gallon, but even if I swapped in the optional 32 gallon, this Tundra would still have more real-world range as my Ram averages only about 14.5 mpg in mixed driving with a 5.7L Hemi and a 3.91 rear) and for those LONG highway slogs getting from home here in Napa Valley in California to the 4 Corners region to play, it has radar cruise-control for those 12-14 hour driving days.
I also think the price is actually pretty good when you compare apples to apples. Ignore the marketing that would have us think this Tundra is Toyota's answer to Ford's Raptor or the Ram Rebel. It's not. The Tundra TRD Pro at ~$52-54k has a feature mix you can't match with Ram or F-150 for anything close to that price. Try it. Price a Ram or F-150 (haven't tried it yet with a Silverado/Sierra) with the following: 4WD, crew-cab, SB, leather seating surfaces, LED headlamps and fog lights, fancy factory performance exhaust, V8, auto-LSD or alternative, sat-Nav, auto-cruise, stock skid plates and a big fuel tank.
A comparably equipped 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab short bed 4x4 lacks a fancy suspension option (unless you want to treat the $1800 air suspension as a Fox suspension alternative, which pushes the Laramie price even higher) and comes in around $58k in MSRP, about 4k more than the Tundra. F-150? Ha, ha, ha, ha. Overpriced compared to alternative in any apples-to-apples trim comparison - You're just over $60k MSRP. Toyotas tend to have better resale value than Fords or Rams (or Chevy/GMCs), so economically you pay less going in (apples-to-apples in feature terms) and get more of what you paid coming back out after 5-10 years.
No decision yet, but as I said, the Tundra has slowly climbed from "almost didn't consider it" to "I could see buying one to replace my current truck".

People say it's outdated and old compared to the competition but it sells well and people love it. Not all truck drivers want electronics stuff and 10" screens in their cars.

@@kingdaniel3519 for a 10 years old truck the sales are good. All other competitors are more advanced in term of technology and engines but Toyota still managed to sell good numbers of the Tundra. Probably the next Gen will arrive in 2020

The interior of the 1794 edition is great. I test drove a 2019 TRD Pro with the leather interior and I really liked it.

If you want to run in snow you need to turn atrac and vsc completely off or the computer will limit the power output because it detects wheel slip. Someone that knows how to drive a Tundra would have 0 issues with this climb. The tires need to spin to clear snow out of the treads.

Now Toyota, id go middle or TRD. Titans i probably go middle.....anything without sunroof and chrome....and with a keyed ignition if possible. Thats a perfect truck.

Tundra is a money printing press. Toyota makes 3 times as much per unit on Tundra as any of the big 3. Tundra sales are still solid. It's looking like 2020 for an update, probably moving to a twin turbo v6 and 8 speed like the Lexus vehicles have. 416hp 450 ft/lb. Pretty similar to the Ecoboost. That's my bet of what we'll see in the engine bay. Otherwise it'll probably be pretty similar. Nothing meaningful has changed in truck design otherwise. The new GM trucks visually look nearly identical.

Still driving my 2006 Tundra w/TRD Off Road pkg. Have driven the dog out of it with very few issues. No rust, 16 MPG from the baby V8 (4.7L), drives great, no rattles. Although I like the looks of the domestics, I’m too old to throw away $$$$$$ on bad resale. My old truck is still worth $9-10K and only paid $28k in 2007.
When I bought my TRDPRO and I added bed protection led in bed and nitto grabbers no road noise and great traction

King Daniel What am I missing? I have had Ford,Dodge,GMC,Honda,Volkswagen,Nissan,Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and we now have two Toyota's. the Honda Civic had 401,000 miles when sold and the ridgeline had 155,000 when sold with no problem. I can't say this with the others because of multiple problems. I am saying this just from my experience with multiple cars from multiple companies and at this point my Honda's and Toyota's have gone way past what I was getting out of the others.
I've had a Dodge Ram, a few F150s, a couple of Toyotas and a Chevy Z71 over the years. My Camry went through 2 engines and needed a 3rd so I sold it back to the dealer under the lemon law with less than 25,000 miles. My Tacoma was the worst. Couldn't keep it running more than a few weeks at a time without something going wrong: tranny lost 4th gear, rear axle went out, transfer case burnt up, it was only 4 years old and there was rust showing on the rocker panels, not to mention the piddly shit that kept nickel and diming me to death. I live in the South, no where even near the rust belt! After it left me stranded on the side of the road for the umpteenth time, I had had enough. Went out the following week and bought an F150 and have been happier ever since. That was over 20 years ago. My F150s have had their issues over the years, but there's 1 important thing they've never done: Left me stuck on the side of the road. I've always been able to drive it home. Bully for you that you got your money's worth from them. For me though, you couldn't GIVE me another Toyota.
Love the tundras u don’t need all the fancy terrain management modes but it should have an electronic locking rear diff and some 33’ tires🤙🏻

Did stage 3 at a 10mph steady roll in a tundra TRD PRO but tried it at idle with the outback then bashed the car when it didnt make it. Should’ve let the tundra idle up it at .5mph too (would’ve done the same thing as the outback).

"Need a little more speed" funny Atrac and lsd don't work well over a certain rpm. Learn how the Toyotas atrac, vsc, and alsd work before making this video. A Tundra will lay 2 solid black lines if you know how it works

No. But it will lay two solud black lines if you stop and hold the traction control for 4 seconds.
My only bitch about that is that the brakes will still automatically apply sometimes. The traction control could use to be turned off 100% instead of 90% in my opinion.

No way would I spend over 40k for 10yr old tech. Just got back from Tahoe snow in my Goldilocks F150 gen II 3.5 eco. still have zero problems and she is still a beast at 7,000ft. And still avg.'d 21.5 mpg.

I love my 17 Tundra TRD. Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but it’s built like a tank, smooth on the highway and as reliable as a Camry. People complain about the Powertrain but when you look at the money other makers dump into newer power trains with similar power outputs and 1-2MPG difference, it’s not a cost Toyota wants to have to pass on to the customer. I had an 11’ Rock Warrior with 98K miles on it and zero issues either. If it ain’t broke...

Unless the 2019 ram did some major structural changes, it was always the worst, by a very significant margin. 2018 and earlier rams would chop your legs off in a sub 30mph crash! This was avknowledged even, by ram owners. 2017-2018 crash studies done, on half tons rate the ram dead last and unacceptable.
Again, things could, have changed with the 2019's.

Toyota is saving money by not having to update tooling or injection molds. Fox-Shocks can’t justify the price for what it severely lacks against its competitors.... you can see the $50k in Ford, Chevy & Ram.
Hood scoop, shocks & fog lights aren’t gonna magically make a $30k truck become a $50k truck. If it’s as reliable as everyone touts, might as well buy a 10yr old model & outfit it like the current TRD ... nobody would know the difference & you’d save close to $30k

Interesting point, but not saving 30k. I considered the same until comparing the value of Platinums/SR5's around 2-4 years old. At this range, it makes little sense to buy used. I picked up a '18 demo Tundra for nearly 10k off the sticker. It pays to shop.

My titan has a Cummins, a heavy duty aisin tranny, and a rear locker from the factory. And it was cheaper than a sr5 tundra with a couple options. Still, I wonder if i made the right choice...

@@ontheotherside3 Pretty sure you do not have the same aisin tranny that goes into a dodge 3500. Your aisin transmission is a lighter duty, totally different transmission for a smaller 5.0 cummins. I do like the cummins/aisin combo in the new Titan though, I wish other manufacturers would offer it, Actually, I wish dodge would offer it in the 1500, get rid of that pos ecodiesel.
Edit: I want to clarify, the Aisin A466ND in the Titan and the Aisin AS69RC in the dodge 3500 are similiar in the fact that they weigh approx the same (400lbs) and they share the same gear ratios. The AS69RC is said to be able to handle up to 950 ft-lbs of torque, while the A466NND is said to hold around 700 ft'lbs. On interesting fact is that, the rear axle on the Titan is from the NV3500 1 ton van.
@@SSMedic thanks for the edit and clarification on the model numbers. Looks like I was wrong about it being the same tranny, close, but not the same. Still, it is quite a bit overkill. The 5.0 cummins only puts out some 555 ish tq.
Titans are pieces of shit. I owned a 2010 and it had electrical issues, then I found out most of the parts come from China and are assembled here in Tennessee. Doesn’t have that Nissan Japanese reliability like the Frontier. No comparison to Toyotas. Titans are at the bottom of the food chain. Probably why they have to offer that crazy warranty to convince people to buy em

This is one of the most beautiful, capable and reliable trucks on the planet. If I had an extra 50k it would certainly be my first choice. Titan PRO 4X would be my second choice.

Only Toyota could get away with not updating a powertrain for 12 YEARS!!!! That truck came out in 2007 and is basically untouched since. The only place it shows up as an 07 is the horrible mpg when compared to the competition. Power and performance is still competitive. Just goes to show how good it was in 07.
ib516 Toyota did change the transfer case in 2014. New unit does engage into 4wd quicker , but not necessarily stronger.
One mod some might not be aware of on Tundras is swapping out the transfer cases with a Sequoia adds a center differential and Awd ability along with selectable 2wd and 4wd

Nissan frontier has the tundra beat. The frontier came out in 2004 for the 05 model year. That was nearly 15 YEARS ago. The final generation of the mini ranger was sold for 14 years.
Small overlap at around 40mph will leave you in a wheelchair....

Alot of vehicles could have made it up the same trail in the same conditions. It was a good test as far as showing how the truck works in an offroad situation.
