As an animation student, I thought Gokinjo Monegatari had a comparatively unique style as opposed to the copy/paste aesthetic of today. It was a bit rough at first, but got better and definitely was less monotonous.
I find funny when People say Gokinjo Monogatari has a bad animation, it is an old animation style which can't be compared with Nana or Paradise kiss since both are digital animation and respond to a different demand on visual culture. Maybe for People that are used to an animation that has refined aesthetic could be a little difficult, but I think they should try to understand this anime on it's time context. Also Toei animation on 1996 had other anime productions as priorities. I think MadHouse has better anime producción quiality and have always been more confortable with experimental animation
100% agree! I thought the animation was pretty good for the most part. Obviously Paradise Kiss and Nana were going to be animated better since they were made after Gokinjo Monogatori.
I honestly think Gokinjo did it waaay better than Paradise Kiss. Its all substance while Paradise Kiss is all style. I'd much rather have a fun and plot focused anime. For some reason Paradise Kiss characters dont know how to speak to each other at all, and i really dont like the anime compared to the manga.
NANA will forever be one of my all time series and the series hurt so much when I rewatched the series when I reached my 20s. I’m 23 now and my perspective completely shifted in regards to how I view the show and characters. Many of the events that occur in the series along w/ the characters themselves are something that you can only truly understand once ya reached young adulthood.
i’m in the same boat and age!! i watched nana and when i was freshman in highschool and loved it then i just rewatched it last month and have so much appreciation and understanding of everything now that i’ve experienced most of the emotions, situations, and problems the characters had. Nana is and will prob always be in my top 3 anime solely of its reliability to me. I’m not even mad or dissatisfied in it not to being finished i’m just grateful and happy Ai gave me such a beautiful story during these confusing 20 somethings
Ai Yazawa's first anime adaptation was an OVA called "I'm Not an Angel" release 1 years before Neighborhood Story and the main characters of OVA did make appearance Neighborhood Story
I remember watching nana at my older cousins house back in the day, around the time it first aired & I never really payed any mind to the story since I was so young but the art style & fashion was so pleasing to me when I was little I couldn’t look away from the screen i rewatched nana last summer & not only did I enjoy the fashion 10x more but the story took me thru so many emotions & the manga absolutely destroyed me, I hope miss yazawa can eventually continue with the series but her health & happiness come first
Just some general notes, Risa from Neighborhood Story wears a more general diy goth, sometimes punk style rather than Gothic lolita. A better example of Gothic Lolita is seen in Misato from Nana♥️ Great video though, I enjoyed seeing a retrospective on Ai Yazawa 's series
Love Gokinjo Monogatari! I can vividly remember the first time I read Nana and worked backwards to Paradise Kiss and then Gokinjo Monogatari and every one had its own charm for sure. Re-reading these as an adult definitely gave me better insight into the characters and their actions. Bonus: Wasn't expecting to see Honey and Clover talked about for 2 seconds 🥰my absolute favourite. A must watch for those who like getting contemplative about stories lol
I recently finished parakiss, and after that watched velvet goldmine (a 1998 movie i'd read had inspired yazawa for creating george). it was pretry Interesting seeing them kind of together because the aesthetic influence is pretty prominent
NANA was such a crucial series to me because I was quite literally living the same life as Hachi in many ways during its release. I moved to Tokyo in 2005 and related to her so much -- even now as I raise my young daughter I still find myself coming back to it time and again nostalgically. I pray it finishes one day, or that Yazawa at least entrusts the story to some of her assistants.
I have this crazy theory that Isabella has a crush with George and was a dramatic version of his vision for Yukari. George is bi so everything is posible lmfao
It is very canon that Isabella is in love with George! I have a similar theory that George was making girls clothes for Isabella until they both hit puberty and Isabella grew outside of the women's fashion model standards
This video was awesome, I’m always inspired by ai yazawa’s art! Could you make a video about Yamato nadeshiko sichi henge? I think this anime is way too underrated and deserves some recognition!
Just a little correction, Mikako from Gokinjo Monogatari appears in Paradise Kiss as Miwako is her younger sister, at this point in the universe Mikako has become a top designer with her brand Happy Berry which she creates in Gokinjo. This video kind of got the two sisters mixed up. Also as an Ai Yazawa freak, a lot of names were mispronounced, especially Vivienne Westwood which kind of threw me off, you don’t have to take my constructive criticism but maybe search the names and pronunciation before hand? I understand Japanese names can be challenging but it’s always good to have a go!!! Really enjoyed this video!!!
I like neighborhood story one of my favs , the art style gives a comfort feeling I also love the show even tho it might be hectic is amazing and rly made me get into fashion! ( I so wanna recreate mikakos outfits )
I've only watched Paradise Kiss so I'm only giving my pov on that section. I suggest digging deeper into the characters and doing a bit more research. The costume review on each character sounds like a vague description - those two-liners on a wiki page, and I ended up becoming confused on whether this is a costume review or a character overview. Some statements are also just... not it. Yukari doesn't start out as a wallflower, and even though she does end up becoming a successful model, "transformation...to confident girl boss" isn't even close to what the story tells. Then there are instances where I'm just confused, like the phrase "She (Yukari) then is more open to exposing more skin..." I'm not entirely sure where'd you get that idea from, since Yukari never hides her body intentionally or feel insecure, and the outfits just don't expose more and more skin throughout the episodes. Lots of places in the video require more thought + better wording for this review to be meaningful and accurate.
Really interesting overview of fashion and art background of these three shows. Thanks! I definitely need to look at oldest one, since I've watched Nana and Parakiss now. Or maybe Honey and Clover first? Hmmm..
I love the video, nice to see the visual and thematic threads strewn across yazawa-san’s work. Would you like an editor? I noticed a few instances where words/phrases were used incorrectly which kinda undermines the points being made. I mean no offence by it, but I do have some experience with essay and script editing if you’re interested (free of course)
Funny I was watching Honey and Clover a bit(it was airing on Pluto tv it's an free streaming app)😂Also Yeah I see the fashion in these show look pretty nice and unique 😊the first one kinda reminds me of Bratz in a way 😅 Anyways Nice job👍I'm no fashion expert myself really 😅I'm kinda the worst at this kinda stuff but I'm doing my best at it..my main problem is trying to match clothes really..I'm terrible at it:'/
Nana started to get annoying when Nana got back with the toxic singer, I dropped immediately At first I thought it was gonna be on my top 10 but turned out to be on my top 25 💀
I just really want a proper Nana ending. She doesn't have to draw. A paragraph! I would have been thankful for a paragraph of an ending.
god same
This!
I’m greedy, I want a beautifully animated remake with fully fleshed out songs and a proper ending.
there must be drawing
It's not a novel, Nana is what it is thanks to art
@@zigzag8392 what do u mean by fully fleshed out songs

"Victorian Cowboy" is honestly the best and only way to describe George now in my opinion 😄 You nailed this video! 👍

Ai yazawa & asap rocky introduced me to high end fashion fr fr
love nana so much, so realistic the troubles of going through life, i really hope this great artist gets the strength to finish this series
just finished nana and now is one of my favorite animes ever
btw, your portrait is so cute

Interesting theory, I def will explore that.
I totally thought the same! 😂
Riggghtttt!!! The mangaka gave us the info of george being bi and it was confusing, now this make so much sense
It is very canon that Isabella is in love with George! I have a similar theory that George was making girls clothes for Isabella until they both hit puberty and Isabella grew outside of the women's fashion model standards
I believe it’s in the manga where isabella admits to have been in love with george the whole time!

My first video of yours. Very good analysis and you have such a wonderful & soothing voice❤️
I love your video!!!super cute ,nice and stylish
Watched this first a few months ago for paradise kiss and neighborhood story. Now that I recently finished Nana I've come back to finish the video
since you mentioned honey and clover, if you haven’t already you should totally look at the art book for it!! the clothing in it is immaculate tbh
I just want Nana to be finished, I need it.
no joke i love ai yazawas work
Thanks for this video. It inspires me to giving more thought to how my characters dress and what it represents!
Thank you so much for covering this! It's one of my favorite manga's and it's great to see it covered more.
