    Just volunteered to help preserve an endangered language that has an online vocal dictionary. All the recordings are from the 70s and are in different rooms with different equipment.

    The AI kinda sounds like it needs a text copy of the speech so it knows what words to look for. Not sure if that's an available tool yet.

    I'd love to see someone tackle the many old time radio shows and clean them up (removing the crackling and popping in most old ones, and some have even more wrong with them and are pretty bad, some are pretty good with just some crackling and popping).

    try to improve the PT Barnum 1890 cylinder recording you could then compare it to my version on my channel.
    the problem with this recording is that it was transferred to tape in the 1960s on most versions online Mr. Barnum sounds like he got a nose cold this is because there's high resonance at certain frequencies once those are out the voice sounds more human.
    so this is not about removing noise but improving the sound of a voice.

      @@MikeRussell well, I think that I asked you to do that.
      I'm pretty happy with the work that I did on this recording so I'm done with it.
      it still sounds like a 1880s-90s wax cylinder but the voice is now so much easier to listen to.
      so I wonder what you can do with it.
      there are many videos on this recording on youtube all of the same 1960s transfer.
      also, check out my restored version on my channel and it's named Phineas Taylor Barnum to make it easier to find among all those PT's

      like you I have been doing this for 20+ years but unlike you, I exclusively work with historical recordings (1888 onwards) I transfer restore, and archive, and that digital archive now holds more than 250,000 sound files.
      I worked with radio, tv, and even movie and documentary productions.
      you probably know how joyful that last can be...

    De-Reverb didn't stand a chance because it is ECHO that plagues this clip not reverb.
    Unlike echo, Reverb represents multiple reflections of the original signal MINUS the original attack.
    There might be a way of cancelling the echo by inverting and very accurately phase aligning the original and weighting its amplitude in such a way as to remove the echo to a level that is unobtrusive.

    Hi Mike,
    Great video, really enlightening to see both the capabilities and limitations of these tools. Question: I have a recording of my grandfather (who won awards for his singing) singing the Lords Prayer in 1948 which has gone from vinyl->tape->digitized. I have been quite successful using Audible and even the sound tools in Davinci Resolve to substantially clean up his voice. However, the piano accompaniment has a horrible warble to it. Do you know what kind of distortion is creating this and can you suggest how to fix it. It is curious that in the original recording the piano is so much worse than the voice. Many thanks for your help.
    Richard

    Very clever trying to do a phase inverted echo track. Try instead doing the subtraction in the spectral domain, that way the phase doesn't need to be aligned perfectly
    I know how to do this in max/MSP, I'm not sure what other tools do it, some type of spectral editor maybe.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for the suggestion! A spectral editor like iZotope RX or Adobe Audition can indeed be used to perform spectral subtraction and achieve better phase alignment for restoring

  • @therestorationofdrwho1865

    Personally I’d try the hardest thing.
    Manual spectral editing, with the eraser tool in audition to meticulously remove all the echo frequencies.

    I recently recorded a video where the noise suppression filter on OBS kept cutting my voice out when I got excited, which was a lot. Makes it hard to listen to which is a shame cause I'm fairly proud of the video. Is there any way to repair this kind of audio issue? Does anyone here know?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  Рік тому

      If you're just recording and not streaming live then remove the filter and process the audio in post production.
      Also be careful in setting mic levels and if you're experiencing great peaks and dips considering adding a processor like the dbx286s to reduce these.
