haha sunglasses flash. So nice rewatching this because I regret not having another video from that trip where we talked and showed us hanging out more on trail. Some good tips here. Pumped to hike again Ryan.
Thx a lot Ryan. I focus on dooing this kind of videos in the future. Away from the vlogs we do right now. I left a like and sub. Beat wishes from hiking Country switzerland Roman
These are a few of the things I found helpful that I learned from Kraig. Hopefully, you find them useful too. What are some of the best tips you've learned from others over the years? Don't worry about sounding stupid, heck one of the most useful for me was to not use sunglasses while shooting...🤷♂️
Very interesting comments on shooting photos and video. I have tried some of those things for years, but didn't know why it worked, but it just did. The sunglasses are the biggie. Especially if you have polarized lenses!!! Have enjoyed your hikes and presentation!
This video was great and helpful! I honestly love Kraig's work and how purposeful his shots are. I'm looking forward to see more videos from you and him
Good question. Not 100% certain but I now use autofocus during framing and then switch to manual once it's set. That's the fastest process for me. Sony can sometimes, search/breath, when you are walking by if you leave it in autofocus, which can be seen in my earlier videos.
Thanks for the tips. One of your tip is 'underexpose the shot', but then isn't the video too dark? Does Kraig Adams expose the videos when he edit them?
Better to underexpose and have to correct in post then to blow out the shots and lose it forever. Kraig has been doing this long enough that he typically does little to nothing in post. Also when I say he underexposes the shot slightly, that is using multi metering mode, not center or spot, which can typically blow out the sky if you don’t compensate.
Great summary, thanks for making the effort to help newbies like myself. A small extra to add: moving shots, especially hand held, quick or with jerky movements can be very hard to watch. I've had to resort to primarily tripod based shots not for an artistic sense but simply to prevent nausea for my parents. Smooth, slow moving frames, without change of direction, also work very well for them.
Nice insights! Kraig is super inspiring, especially with these latest hiking videos. Have you tried using zebras when setting exposure? Very helpful, just walk things right up to 100%, then down a stop. Also helps to have the histogram up while doing this if your camera supports it.
This must have been asked about a million times but I can't find the answer: when doing a tripod shot while solo hiking, you first need to find the spot for the tripod/camera, then record and walk away from it, sometimes quite far, then go back to pick it up. That sounds like a hassle no? Is there a technique or something to make it more efficient, like using the drone to retrieve the tripod? Thanks
It is a hassle, but if it were easy everyone would do it. I’d lie if I didn’t say there were some shots that I chose not to get because I didn’t want to walk back to get the camera. I have found that it adds about 10% on to the distance.
Thanks for this nice compilation Ryan. What I really want to know is, when there is a close up of Kraig peeling an orange or whatever of his hands, his fingernails always look much cleaner than mine do when I backpack. What is his secret? Really want to know. Thanks. ;-)
Experience. Throw it in tripod mode, line up your shot, start hiking and have your drone moving in one direction. There are no complex movements in his drone shots. Slowly forward, every time.
Thank you for the good video. Does he use manual focus when shooting? If I use it, might it be out of focus on the moving person. Is there a tip to focus on everything?
Higher f-stop will bring more things into focus. Use autofocus to set the shot and what you want in focus, then flip it to manual focus so the lens doesn’t “breath” or try to refocus while your walking through the frame.
That really makes a difference when trying to film yourself while walking. I can’t tell you how many shots I screwed up just trying to control it in p mode. Game changer for sure.

I’m not built to sit still...I’m dying here...let’s get something big in the books so we have something to look forward to.
Yes !!! I love you 🤟 and I love to learn more from you !!!
Kraig I wish I can learn from u
Kraig Adams is my inspiration. He introduced silent shooting which was ah this is what I'm looking for this long.
Glad you found it helpful!

Is that legit that Kraig is underexposing his shots by nearly 1 stop? Really? Using what metering mode as the basis for such underexposing?
It is legit. Hard to pull back a blown out sky. I still struggle with it.

Thank you for this video, some great tips!
I love all lovely friends all around the world 🗺 !!!
Wow! Thanks Ryan! I really enjoy the BTS footage of your hike with Kraig and all comments/notes also. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video! It's really nice to see what behind Kraig video..
This video was great and helpful! I honestly love Kraig's work and how purposeful his shots are. I'm looking forward to see more videos from you and him
He really spent a lot more time choosing and composing his shots, made me really look at the way I’ve been approaching my stuff.
Love Kraig Adam's hiking vids. I just posted a video where I copied.. was inspired by him
That’s how it works. Copy at first, then it will evolve into your own eventually.
Thanks, Ryan! What about the focusing technique? I suppose it's mostly manual focus.

Really great information, thanks for sharing!
Glad you hit something out of it.
Just came across this and really enjoyed the video. Great tips and excited to watch your other videos. Cheers from Norway!
Glad you got something out of it!

Perfetto 👍🏻... Thx for information it is gold.
Glad this was helpful. Maybe I should update this video with what else is new.
This was very well done, a big fan of Kraig so I really enjoyed watching this BTS...

Great Video Ryan! Loved the insights, keep it up! Greets from Germany 😃
Welcome to helps Support me !!!
last tip:
don't copy KA.
a lot of jump cuts in his editing, you can do better
I can say with some authority, you are wrong. Even Kraig Adam’s copied people he liked until he found/evolved into his own style. Cheers.

Rowan Bradley I do now! 😀
Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned from hiking with Kraig! Loved the tip about recording ambient sounds
Definitely makes a difference when you get to the final edit!
Thanks for your selfless sharing! I’ve learnt a lot from you and Kraig!
Glad to hear! I probably need to update this a bit as things have evolved.

@@RyanJSchmitz Thanks for the info, and happy new year!

how does he look like he is just hiking while flying the drone?
Experience. Throw it in tripod mode, line up your shot, start hiking and have your drone moving in one direction. There are no complex movements in his drone shots. Slowly forward, every time.
Does he film in SLOG 2 or 3?
Neither. Films in default Sony picture profile.
No need for ND filters?
He doesn't use one, I just recently started to use one.
Nice sharing 👍🏼
How about the sound ambience like footsteps or when unboxing things from bag...
How Kraig make it?
Thank you
Just a good mic on top of the camera. In Hong Kong he used the Rode Videomic NTG.
Thank you for the good video.
Does he use manual focus when shooting?
If I use it, might it be out of focus on the moving person.
Is there a tip to focus on everything?

@@RyanJSchmitz Thank you. I have one more question. Looking at his drone footage, the frames look smooth. Does he use an nd filter on drone?
No ND filter. When you are far away from the subject and move slowly it will keep the shot from stuttering or looking weird.
@@RyanJSchmitz Thank you very much for your kind reply. It helped a lot.
Went though one of your video and found that brilliant! It is my firm belief that you are second to none among top brace solo hikers in the world!
Appreciate the feedback.
Nice Video. I have seen many times. But may I know how many days you have walked the trails?
We finished the Maclehose in 4 nights. With more daylight we could have probably done it in 3 nights.
The sunglasses tip 😂
Sometimes I’m amazed at how something so obvious alludes me. I think I did a better job exposing this last time. Still learning....
Ryan J Schmitz totally I’m always rushing to get the shot and forget to slow down and make sure it’s perfect
Really nice drone tips! Thanks Ryan 👏
Thanks for the tip
Thanx😎
thank you ryan, that help me now for my drone shots "tripod mode*

Приятно слушать! Спасибо за видео!
that was very insightful, thank you!
Thanks for sharing mate, great insight.
Really good tips Ryan, i love his drone shots.
His drone shots are top notch, no doubt.
Good tips!

He knows his stuff!
Hey man! I hope your channel blows up soon. Very underrated content
Thanks Sam. I’ve got a new hiking video coming out in a day or two utilizing some tricks I learned. Let’s see how it goes!
