If Super Mario Bros. were made in 2016

- What if the great classic "Super Mario Bros.", we all know from the NES, were made in 2016 (shortly before the microtransaction and loot crate craze, mind you)? Let's have a look!

Just a short info because some people seem to take this video the wrong way, thinking I wanted to express that people nowadays are dumb or something. That's not the case. I came up with this idea ages ago, when I was playing the game "Tornado" on the Nintendo DS... or rather... *trying* to play that game, because it simply wouldn't let me. Its tutorial really *was* exactly like the one I depicted in that video. (You couldn't skip the annoying text boxes and it showed you everything first before it let you "try it out for yourself".) It made me so angry that I thought "Man... if Super Mario Bros. had had *such* a tutorial, everybody would have hated the first moments of the game with a passion!" And in 2016 I made a video out of that idea. (Also, because some people are a bit irritated by the title: It's correct to say "if it were made". Of course, it's also okay to say "if it was made", but that's more colloquial. Yeah, I looked that up because English is not my first language.^^)
I just found this video, its soo true and u just commented, that's great! Awesome idea!
Understanding satire? Too complex. Need a tutorial for it.
Thank you, Recki! :)
It makes me sad that you even needed to add this comment. I guess some people really do get offended by nothing. Either way majority of the people who watched it liked it, including me. So well done and thanks for making.
They are dumb now a days.
That's why so many got offended.
2017
Please pay 5$ to play this level.
nickiboi nickman idc about micro transactions I've learned to just accept them because there is no going back.
Alchohol doesn't grant Acceptance, Pitfall Harry.

Oh noes, you need to pay 5.99 for "Move Left" dlc!

No theres those levels were you go up a tower going left and right
Thepic Gamer a year later? Wasn't it made 2016.

Thepic Gamer hi press this link so we could chat
ua-cam.com/video/8PdsE61OwT8/v-deo.html
If it was made by EA: Pay $39.99 to move on to world 2!
Better yet, $149.90 to gain access to the Warp Zone.
Pay $299.99 to free Princess Peach!
That was 2016 not 2017/2018
Super Mario Run it is...
I'm sorry Mario but our princess is in another DLC, would you like to order Super Mario DLC: World 3-1?
This is how It feels playing Pokemon sun and moon or ultra sun and moon
Ikr XD
Ugh, so true it stings.
Kno that feel, bro
You know, I was thinking that exact same thing. One of those feelings that you just wanna punch your screen for wasting your time.
Except the unskippable cutscenes/text was actually enjoyable. It felt like a movie, but on my 3ds. In fact, the cutscenes were my favorite part of the game.
I like that Reggie keeps making the Navi”Hey, Listen” sound when trying to get your attention, just to rub the salt in the wounds even more
Starvino
Navi is cute!
Your right navi is really the only cute voiced nintendo character and also I've played the legend of Zelda aswell
I liked navi, and note is boring without a companion..
No shit Sherlock.
Why this Mario game was very interesting thought on a 2016 version good ua-cam.com/video/O6vsG1gzzQg/v-deo.html
At least there aren't microtransactions...
Marcus Rodriguez Yet.
If you wish to continue past this tutorial, please purchase the ''Super Mario Bros Actual Game That Isn't A Shitty Tutorial'' DLC pack.
Super Mario Run. That's all I have to say.
You need to pay Power-Ups and Life-Ups Mushrooms
If i’m going to be a game developer when i grow up i’m not going to add any microtransactions.
Haha! Genius! A great homage to how video game tutorials to suck the life out of games from the start. Kudos.
IGCritic lol trying to collect soobs I see
It’s true, though
IGCritic true
It depends on the genre in my opinion and how much it has to teach you. Like if it gradually teaches things throughout the first Part of the game in an adventure game, or teaches everything at once sorta in a RTS.
Wich is why genious game desighn n "tutorials" always shows but doesnt tell. Mario did it sonic did it half life did it. By exposing the player to situations wher they must do a choice, for example learn to jump by placing a pit or an obstacle in wich the player have to jump over to progress.
You would not get coins in game, but rather from an online store with real money. When you come across a mushroom, flower or star a message would pop up asking, "Buy Mushroom for 20 coins? Yes / No"
1997- I wish theres more challenges!!
2018- more tutorials
The Exotic That moment when it's not even 2018 yet
Optimistic Charizard lol but its almost 2018, its just like 2017
Optimistic Charizard He's from the future

I'm from the FUUUUUUTTTTREEE
It's now 2018
So annoying.
So true.
No 45 min. HDD install and 30 min. 4K texture pack update? Unrealistic!? XD
But yeah this was pretty spot on. :)
Anders Hansen sucks playing on console sometimes
Really the part that bothered me was how the timer was counting down still during the text
Ehcko the lost life and the timer would reset when the tutorial was over. It happens in games like thst nowadays.
Ehcko did you never played a game like that ? That's what happens
meanwhile, the timer's still running. genius.
At the end of the tutorial.
"Oh, I forgot to mention, do you see that 3 numbers in the top right corner?
The one currently shows 015, under the text "TIME". Yeah, well, if it shows 000, you die and you'll need to purchase
an extra life for $1.99. Good luck!"
Well by judging the downvotes here I can't hide that these modern tutorials does indeed lower the IQ as these people do not even get the concept of this presentation.
The entire tutorial uses the Time thing.
Yeah, the tutorial WASTES YOUR TIME!
@@Ilikewater-andice lol yeah
this is physically painful to watch
It is physically painful to read this comment
That... That-- was just a joke... By the way... Be-- because.. ummm. Ok BYEEEEE!!!
Semi charmed kind of guy But it’s a good vid
Retro Playz it is a good vid, it accomplished its goal of making me cringe
Semi charmed kind of guy true true
Interesting that a video like this exists. The developers said that they designed the first level of the game specifically so that players could play through it and learn the basics of the game that way, no tutorial required. Would that more games these days could do that.
ZachaRicO *Pronounced Zak-uh-REEK-oh
Super Mario 3D world is supposed to do the same because of all the new elements. For example at the beginning of the level with the red/blue platforms, you have to jump to get over a platform, and jumping activates the red/blue platforms.
That's a little more complex, but I guess it's the same idea. This is Nintendo, after all.

ZachaRicO *Pronounced Zak-uh-REEK-oh
Megaman X actually does the same thing with its first stage
ZachaRicO *Pronounced Zak-uh-REEK-oh
Yep, that's the point of the video.
Sad but true. Back then there were no tutorials. You either learned how to play or got out of the way for the next person.
ShinyLycanroc *plays "Sad But True" by Metallica*
Super Mario Bros. was just a tutorial for Super Mario Bros. 2 (FDS)
ShinyLycanroc Thats CAPITALISM...FUCK YEA! 'MERICA!!!!🇺🇸🎆🏈🍔🔫💰🍺
ShinyLycanroc im pretty sure there were written tutorial booklets included with the game
arte0021 There were

Super Mario Bros. With tutorials and guides: 2 hours
Anybody feel the same!?
Valorous HD If you don't use the warp zone, it will take you at least 19 minutes
I was just expecting a "Pay $1.99 for power ups!"
It's a good thing that Mario doesn't have a cup for a head, you may have been stuck at the tutorial forever!
6 Piece Chicken McNuggets I dont get all that tutorial rucus, i passed the tutorial with no problems
A game journalist took 2 minutes to complete the second jump :P
That guy only plays RPGs, he's bad at platforms games
Nine Merc Platoon ikr
Yes, I read it, then he said he was wrong, I don't want to defend him, but fuck, all the people on Internet believe that are great gamers themself, but they aren't, it's annoying
2018: Wait 3 hours to get 3 lives.
$5 for 6 lives
People who have never played video games before figured out this game. This is just sad.
This is absurdly accurate. This is why I enjoy the souls games. I don't want a fucking tutorial.
Matthew Baran But souls actually got 1 xd
Matthew Baran hi
Play Gothic, they just throw u in and u r stupidly underpowered at the beginning, a fuking goblin with a branch kills you ezly.
Ruined the 100 likes :P
Yeah. Even a fucking ReShade shader has an unskippable tutorial. That's why I prefer older SweetFX.
"No don't turn off the console! NOOOOO!" Lol that got me. Nice vid.
Jokes aside. the tutorial music is pretty good.
Best video ever so far, you really showed the tutorial problem on games these days, keep up the good work :)
When Reggie came up i started laughing lol
McLovin i.am best moment at 2:02
Reggie is everywhere!
However is your body ready? To laugh of course.
I was expecting something to do with micro transactions
The game was turned off, before that was explained :D
Guru Popuri I don’t think Nintendo had a history of micro transactions
They would kill you off 2 more times in the tutorial and then make you buy more lives for premium currency.
_Gems ; Skin ; Energy ; Premium account ; Stage unlock ; bla bla bla..._
To unlock warp, pay 5.99$
Good thing Mario actually doesn’t give tutorials like that
I think this does highlight a lot of problems with games today. They hold your hand too much, instead of throwing you right into the action and making you figure out everything on your own.
Wow, thanks man. I totally needed you to point that out. I was confused about what was this video about.
Well this is ironic
Yet here you are, explaining exactly what the video is trying to show us. Who's holding people's hands again?
@@MrJoshuaSalway1990 I think that was a joke.
Should have had more dlc and microtransactions. More dubstep and open world focus. More references to checking things out on apps or maybe an add or two. Mandatory installation of 10 gig, online access only, load times, warning screens telling you about flashing lights, super guide after dying once and finally checkpoints after every enemy and regenerating health
Dont forget about: This game uses an autosave feature, do not turn off the console while this icon is displayed, as you might lose your save data.
Also dont forget about: Removing lives
and: The logos that appear before the game even starts.
All of these things add up to why I sometimes feel lazy to even start playing a game because its gonna take atleast 30 minutes to get to the part where you actually start playing the game.
Nintendo has never even done half of these things, and a quarter of the other things aren’t even bad things.
Troy Wright thats 2017
And dont forget about updates either, sometimes when i wamt to play BOTW I instead have to play something else while it updates or just do something completely different. The worst part is that it only tells you that it needs to update when you want to play it ( atleast on wii u
Troy Wright but Mario games in 2016 don’t have any of those things
Wow, that infused every tutorial trope I have ever seen. Well done.
Legend has it that he is still explaining how the mushroom thing works
Why am I watching this
Why are tutorials like this ever necessary? Isn't the first thing anyone does when they play a new game is press all the buttons to see what does what? I guess a tutorial is fine if they're gonna tell you stuff that isn't obvious, like jumping out of a crouch to do a higher jump or something like that, something you wouldn't know to do without being told. But if you're just gonna tell me to press A to jump, then some designer somewhere needs to be slapped.
Pretty much, I push all the buttons when I start a game for the 1st time.
But then you have problem is with tutorials that don't let you experiment like this example if your character can jump but they want to just look left and right or up and down or you can't jump yet or your character can kick, punch or shoot have abilities associated with a button or a key have been turned off until you complete the tutorial. tutorials always been a part of video games especially when we went from 2D to 3D but it's definitely gotten like this it has progressed to the point of stupidity.
It depends on how complex the controls are, or whether they vary from the norm across many similar games -- or if you want to ensure that players who don't have a history with other games (no game education, as it were) can also play your game.
Also, I brought my niece and nephews up on classic NES and SNES ROMs, and many times they got flustered because they couldn't internalize the idea that all the controls (the half-dozen or so buttons) are in one specific part of the keyboard. When you clearly have only a tiny number of buttons, pressing them and finding out what they do is normal. When there's a lot more to experiment with, or the possibility of combos, tutorials can be more useful.
The other thing is affordances -- check out Extra Credits' video on the idea -- where the tutorial is implicit instead of explicit. In fact, check out their video on exactly how Mario trains the user, without saying a word: ua-cam.com/video/ZH2wGpEZVgE/v-deo.html
i wish i could like your comment twice
Games are getting more complex mechanics these days though a lot of them dont tell you the important stuff but instead the trivial ones.
This reminds me of those Kirby Super Star tutorials that try way too hard to sound funny and optimistic.
supermarioglitchy321 as far as I remember, those tutorials were able to skip.....
Most tutorials these days doesn't even have the skip option......
HOLY SHIT YOURE RIGHT, ITS EXACTLY LIKE THAT! EVEN WITH IT BEING SO SLOW AND HOW IT TEACHES YOU THE ABSOLUTE MOST BASIC THINGS.
Well, to be fair you could skip those. And I always thought they were pretty cute, soooo...
If Kirby wasn't optimistic then what would he be

This is stupidly accurate
It's kind of scary how accurate this video is...
Be honest, it would make you happy to see Reggie's giant head float around and give you advice.
i think it's missing about 500 intro screens though.
This is so fucking painful. I love it
Hey, they added a game journalist mode
Cuphead
Splat Pat it is ineffective...
I love how the timer keeps going even with the trxt box up!
I just noticed the time countdown continues to run even with the tutorials haha
Nintendo would be quickly bankrupt. Those graphics are terrible for a triple-A game nowadays.
N nigga u gay?
no, everyone who likes ONLY graphics are, he is just pointing it out.
N graphics dont matter kiddo
this guy doesent care about graphics, he is pointing out that the people who DO will not like it and evntually sense there is so much people who care only about graphics that it WILL go bankrupt
Shovel Knight and Sonic Mania would like a word...
But how will I get my 10 free pokeballs?
This is so accurate, every game nowadays has a tutorial or has one you can't skip. Good job man.
Best 3 minutes of my life
Caio Figueiredo I bet u also commented that on another video
So accurate. If developer really need to put a tutorial then make a separate option at main menu.
There are some games that have their tutorials at proper places. I just cant recall one now.
The other is that you should be able to skip the tutorials too...
Marko Pallas Tutorials are for pansies.
Agent. ( -_-) that is true if you play the same game so much you cannot for example forget the controls or something.
I myself dont use any tutorials for games like mario or zelda.
Marko Pallas Any game with some real care put into it follows the basics of first level design, which is to teach a player how to play without the player ever being the wiser.
Agent. ( -_-) I know that. For that I gave you a thumb up.
I myself even am studying developing programs and soon we start C sharp code so if I actually can make proper games with it I will take proper care to the playability of the game. Well of course one person with coding as a hobby wont propably satisfy all people but hell if I care.
See nowadays people only care about realistic graphics and fpss while my priority for a game is that it works and plays and then if the game will offer enough replay value in form of either long story or lots of stuff you are able to do. Also I can filter all nostalgia away from reviewing a game because it both spoils so many people and it does not make the game itself good.
Sorry for giving an essay response but just wanted to give you a peek that I am no ordinary gamer or a "fanboy"
Marko Pallas Nope no problem, I completely agree! I do art for pixel games, and you are completely right.
Good gameplay and fair mechanics make the best games.
SonataFanatica what a great taste in music you have props for giving the concept
Thank you! :)
I really like sonata Arctica one of my favorite power metal bands
Awesome! :) Been listening to them since 2000. Still a fanatic and collector. :)
Starlink4ever I know right.Fantastic music
One thing to remember is that back in thos days, it was hard to program a tutorial the likes of which we began to see in video games later on. Instead, the game had an instruction manual in the case. All you had to do was read the little booklet and you knew what you were doing. Nowadays a lot of people buy their games online, no physical copy, no instruction manual. So devs started putting tutorials in the games, and instruction manuals in physical copies became increasingly shorter, usually giving only the barebones info on how to play. Nowadays, a lot of games (physical copies) don't even have a manual in the case. Instead maybe there'll be a poster or a promotional pamphlet for dlc or other games made by the dev company, etc. Games changed with the times and methods, albeit with some negative impact; some devs just don't do tutorials right. But with so many games being played straight from the system, it was a necessary change. Too bad some devs just seem to suck at tutorials. What game do you guys think has the crappiest tutorial?
Man...it’s scary how accurate this is today...
This is the kind of tutorial shit we have to deal with today in 2018 and probably be on
Although many people will happily point out the flaws of the New Super Mario Bros. games, at least they don't pander us much more than the classic games did (besides that super guide thing, but that's at least avoidable if you're good at the games).
Yeah just don't hit the green block. That's also why NSMB2 is the worst one. "Here, have an infinite starman with flight abilities!"
The nsmb games are mostly good in my opinion, but I never liked the helper items. But I grew up with the new games, so of course I would like them.
Help items (the white tanooki) only appear in NSMB2, which is the worst one.
Caleb Jaaniste have you played super Mario maker? every time you turn it on you have to watch the same 5 minute introduction which is peppy comical dialogue between a woman and a gassy pigeon. pretty annoying
Is that on Mario Maker 3DS? I heard that game was shit
This is gold. Such a great example of the handholding in modern games.
the most frustrating "gaming" experience
Super Tutorial Bros
games are better without tutorials
MUDKIPZ ARE DA BEST And how would you know how to play Yu-gi-oh! DOTR If the gameplay itself isn't the same as the actual TCG?
I'M TALKING TO YOU CUPHEAD!!!!
depends on the game. some games require more instruction. Most games these days require more than 2 buttons and a d-pad.
Stephen Older manuals. That's how you go. Read the manual. Apply that knowledge to the game.
No need for a tutorial.
The times when tutorials started coming to be normal..game developers admitted it was for...in nicer words but you could read the idea...for dumber kids. Who basically had little to no reading comprehension. Meaning the ability to read and understand and to apply the knowledge.
MUDKIPZ ARE DA BEST I wouldn’t say without them. Just better-designed ones. Like maybe more that teach you as you go without pauses (kinda like Super Mario Odyssey) or like Dark Souls and Super Mario 64 where they teach you (aside from 64’s movement and camera controls) but you have to approach the places that give you help if you want/need to, so it’s all optional to read it
"Oops, looks like you ran out of time!"
Totally agree. I grew up in the 90s before Internet and tutorials were prevalent within games. It felt good when I finally figured out a difficult puzzle in a game and could do it at my own pace. More recent games are tough for me to get into because tutorials like this and excessive cutscenes take too long to get through before you get to the actual game.
STOP, I HOPE YOU CAN SKIP THE TUTORIEL
First you have to download a DLC
Luca Mayhem Did you just make an Undertale reference?
Armando Imaginator X5 L.G. he misspelled it
Dude, its like near the end of 2017. Everyone's tired of having undertale shoved down there throats.
*+Swizz TV Hey, you can say that Undertale is cancer but it's not necessary being Salty Kiddo...*
You really need to get noticed more!
tutorials in a nut shell
This is how it was like playing Xenobalde Chronicles 2
What's wrong with you? (Does anybody get the joke?)
fuzzy da waffle :D
Pretty sure it's a joke on the obsessive amount of hand-holding at the beginning of games nowadays.
That's not a joke, that's a reference dummy.
Yeah it’s just a shitty played out joke
I don't get it.
This would be the beginning AND end of mario
This was very accurate, which is actually sad.
Awesome video!
My body is ready...
This gets anoying so fast
I couldn't even make it through the first 30 seconds....
es fehlt noch der 15€ Pilz dlc wo man direkt als großer Mario ins lvl kommt und am Ende muss nen "teilt meinen Erfolg auf" Facebook knopf
+Dampf Alfi HAHA!! :D Stimmt, du hast recht!^^
nein
He said "the only thing left is the 15 euro mushroom dlc where you enter the level as big Mario and at the end there has to be a "Share my Record on Facebook" button"
Sorry I don't talk Sausages beer
Spot on, these are kind of things that tries to hold players in game a little bit longer so it looks like you played the game a long time, to make it look good.
When the tutorial is finally over, I would have already been in World 4 after getting the flute.
Nah. Mario games have an organic game design. They make very little use of text tutorials like other games.
Other games should have organic game design. Even complex ones, just do it right, then they don't have to have tutorials. Make the player figure out the stuff. Maybe show them the controls on the fly, that's it. Design the very first part of the game like the player will be forced to use the basic things. Give them clues, hints, but not like showing a freaking text box.
If it was made it 2017 *MICRO TRANSACTIONS*
When Reggie was starting the totorial, he should have said "my body is ready"
Very accurate to today's games. Back in the 80s, 90s and even the 2000s you had actually play the game to figure things out (and optionally read the instructions manual).
It’s just missing some 4K textures and overly cinematic cutscenes
*hEY lISTEn*
Neodyte AIY LISIN
That was great! So spot-on!
That’s why old school games are the best
I'm the first to bash modern games, and while overly hand-holding tutorials are true for mobile games, most console/computer games don't suffer from this. True they have tutorial on controls, but then again the NES had 2 buttons, 4 directional buttons, Start and Select, modern controllers have an additional 6 buttons (4x as many) including triggers, and 2 additional sticks (3x as many directional inputs).
So while it was easy to test all possibilities in all situations with 2 buttons, the same doesn't hold today. As an example from previous comment, run Dark Souls, don't read the input tutorials. You'll probably figure out most of the basic functions of all buttons, but you will likely not understand parrying, you probably won't interact with bonfires (or maybe by chance) and as a result won't be able to save or understand how to level up/refill your estus. And I could probably list a couple of other things just by booting up the game and playing for 30 minutes ;)
I think input and base mechanics tutorials, if only basic and textual, are needed, back then you had 2 buttons and basic mechanic, now you have much more buttons and so much more mechanics too (action cancels, lock-on, combos...)
DevilBlackDeath so, what's your point?
Nice work
This video so true... I hate games with tutorials and games today (especially mobile games) filled with them
Instead we read the instruction manuals that came with the game and kept a pile of them as reading material in the bathroom. THAT was my 80s childhood!
If mario bros is made by EA pack of 5 lifes $5.99usd
*Pokémon Sun and Moon in a Nutshell*
PokéGuitaristJake SO TRUE
It's not like a new audience would EVER play Pokémon ami rite?
I was hoping the timer was going to run out but that was good lol
This is so true. I've had experience with this first hand. I released a game for android without an in-game tutorial (I had one, but it was an option in the main menu) and it got ripped to shreds in the reviews, claiming I never taught them how to play the game. The game was so dang simple to play, yet no one knew how. People just got too used to getting their hands held during games.
yo lmao I love sonata arctica
In 1987, we were NOT idiots that needed the hand holding that is tutorials. Classic gaming for life!
World 1-1 was a tutorial. What are you talking about?
Katzelle3 sure, but we didn't need the hand holding to figure it out. Move right, jump on baddies, don't fall in pits. You win!
Tyler Hale
That has never changed though, so what are you talking about?
Love that video!
Nick Fomula
And how is this different from any of the Mario games?
Time for a 2018 update complete with microtransactions and loot boxes!
Breath of the Wild went so far in the opposite direction of this that I actually couldn't figure the game out without asking people online for help. The tutorials were easily missed, often optional, and very brief.
2017 anyone?
me
2019 here....
Me
Plus 1
Calling it now, there will be some joke about DLC or microtransactions or dabbing.
Well I was pleasantly surprised.
There should have been.
Back when this game came out we didn't need a tutorial because the game came with a book explaining everything.
I've played several games where I pretty much quit because the hand holding tutorial lasted 10 minutes
