A fine and nuanced performance. Tempos seem natural and right, the playing is clear and clean with exquisite phrasing drawing the full range of tone with chords well voiced. Best I can find on You Tube.

Wonderful interpretation of the 1934 D. Savino's arrangement published by Robbins Music Corporation. I even enjoyed your additionally, tasteful embellishments and arpeggios.

I've played the piano for 29 years, and I must say this man is amazing. Many pianists play like a computer, with little to no emotion. This man plays with fervor... and he's cute, too. ;)

Absolutely, she is playing "Blue Moonlight" on the P.W. Victor record. You may listen to the Whiteman radio broadcast and other versions of this composition on SoundCloud. Search under my user name, Peter Mintun. Suesse also has her own Facebook tribute page, with many historical photos and recordings.

Good work, Vlad. Good use of rubato. The B section needs a bit more flash and dash (you can't be cautious when you make those jumps.) The more contrast you can make to the A section, the better it will be. Best wishes.

It is my belief that the entry in the RCA-Victor recording ledgers is incorrect. Suesse composed "Blue Moonlight" for P.W. and introduced it on the air 11 Oct 1934. When I knew her she had no memory of having performed "Deep Purple" ever. From 1931 to 1946, whenever she appeared with P.W. it was to perform her own works. Paul Whiteman recorded four selections on that session of 14 Dec 1934. His two pianists at the time were Roy Bargy and Ramona. - Peter Mintun, Dana Suesse Music Co., New York

This is the arrangment I played on piano years ago.

Dana Suesse is not listed on any commercial Paul Whiteman record labels, with the exception of Victor 36159B "Blue Moonlight." It was an entry in the recording ledgers of RCA-Victor that led to the myth of her playing piano on "Deep Purple."

Excellent interpretation. Played with so much feeling and with a beautiful touch. I decided I am also going to play it and upload a jazz version on UA-cam soon. Check it out if you want.

Very nice! I worked on this arrangement in College. I need to find it and read through it again. Man, that is one bright sounding piano! Sounds like the hammers are coated with varnish. Way to bright.

Thanks. Is she, in fact, playing on Blue Moonlight?

  • @merrihew

Of course, the soloist on the 1934 Whiteman recording was Dana Suesse. I prefer your phrasing over hers. Please post more similar material.

Nice work. But piano really overdrives the recorder. Too bad. And you played the original score! Most folks improvise.

Another myth busted. So she is not playing on any of those PW discs despite being listed on some of the labels?
