    I am personally felt she looked so modern even compared to the other women in the movie. I wish she had her "explore the village dress" and the puffy pink 80's inspired floor length with the sleeves. I wanted that dress so badly as a little girl.

      I totally understand that they wanted to modernize the 1830 look because it is about ariel. Surely for them it would be very rare that we see Ariel with a correct hairstyle and dress but it still works. Because the little mermaid doesn't happen in reality and it's not a historical movie, so I understand that they wanted to make it more compatible with today's fashion. Even so, it is true that I was also expecting even an iconic dress of hers, the light blue and the white at the end did not reach that position...
      Thanks for the comment🤍

    The pink dress at the end was pretty, but seemed a little too short to me? I don’t know, just seemed out of place in the setting with all the other 1800s looking dresses, plus I’m biased as the pink dress I was expecting for Ariel would’ve been like the one she wore to dinner in the original 😅. Though I am very disappointed in how they showed her reuniting with Eric and I know I’m not alone on this. I know soooo many fans who’s favourite part from the original was her emerging from the water with the sunrise reflecting her sparkly lilac dress and it was a *crime* us viewers (and Halle) were deprived of such an iconic moment. 😢💜

    I love the blue dress and how it kinda looks like flowing water but I was honestly disappointed that was her dress for most of the movie. It didn’t really feel like a princess dress although it fits her as a newbie in town dress. I just feel like it’s a missed opportunity since HALLE IS GORGEOUS. She slayed those premiere dresses. Also wasn’t feeling the pink headband and I’d have liked a hat or a flower instead. Love the pink boots as well, the little seashell was a nice touch.
    Edit: I didn’t even realize Vanessa’s boots had tentacles to foreshadow her connection to Ursula. They did not hold back on the boot designs for this film ahaa.

      Exactly! I would have loved to see Halle in beautiful princess dresses or even magical and fantasy dresses! Honestly, the premiere dresses had a lot more variety than the actual costumes in the movie (from Ariel's perspective).

    Bit off-topic, but speaking of the inspiration for Snow White: I would love to see a properly costumed historical movie set in the German renaissance. I love the dresses on Cranach's portrait, for me there's something so modern and fancy about them - might be the jaunty hats which remind me a bit of the 40's and 50's high fashion. One can dream...!

    I liked her mermaid outfit, but the reason they chose to give her a scale bralette didn't make sense.
    The designers said she gave her a scale bralette because it was too difficult to make a shell bralette. However, that doesn't make any sense to me because people who aren't even professionals make shell bralettes all the time. Not only that, but they could have made it CGI.
    It's also very unclear if her bra is made out of fish skins from dead fish, or she was born with those scales attached to her(or something else). If it's the ladder; then why is that not talked about in the movie?

    I think the biggest reasons Ariel doesn't have as many costume changes are because of Covid, lack of time, and budget. I think they wanted to give Ariel more dresses to wear, but ran out of money and time to make them. Ariel always sells better as a mermaid than as a human, so it's not surprising that they focused more on Ariel's mermaid look than her human look. [Also, for anyone wondering why she wore a bandana, the reason is because some of the locs she had to wear for the movie were starting to fall off. It is kind of similar to when one of the actresses from high School Musical mentioned she wore headbands in the movie because no one on set knew how to work with her hair.]

    • @medtle1
      @medtle1 Рік тому +3

      Also, I know Ariel was fascinated by the human world, but I wanted to see more of the mermaid world in the movie, along with some historical afro-caribbean styles. Disney is making an Ariel TV show for disney junior and it will explore more of the Caribbean areas and cultures, so I am excited about that.

      @@medtle1 Now that I think about it, you may be right, but have you seen other period series or movies that were filmed or that at some point in production suffered from Covid? Because even with all the problems they had, their costumes didn't suffer from any big changes in terms of budget. Some even had a much lower budget than The Little Mermaid and even did a good job. What's more Collen Atwood said that she started researching the costuming of the movie at the end of 2018 and doing them in 2019 pre-covid era. But hey I may be wrong!

Knowing the significanse and impact the wedding gown had in the 1980s it would have been a cute shout out to the original. and perhaps Ariel could have taken it off before getting into the boat in an act of rebellion. and under that dress she would be wearing the last one (that is, the white and pink one) from the movie. Not only would it have been beautiful to look at but also even better for marketing i mean imagine the amount of beautiful dolls that would be sold from Halle dressed as a bride!

    i think because this is now a live action adaptation of the animated one, it will be so over the top and not reality-base to give Ariel beautiful dresses. in animation, artists can do whatever they like to draw costumes into the characters. in live acton adaptation, the creators are now thinking of the "reality" of the real world. where will Ariel get those "dresses"? don't tell the housekeeper will just give her another of her daughter's gowns? its so much practical and grounded in real life that she has that one dress, after all, there is a big pay off with that dress when Prince Eric find it tattered at the end of the movie before the fight with Ursula

      Look, it's completely understandable that the movie wants to be a little more realistic with some details, but honey. We are dealing with a movie that has magic, sea witches, talking animals and even mermaids. Things that in the 1830s (the decade in which not only the story but also this movie takes place due to the costumes and etc.) did not exist. It's a magical movie for children whether we like it or not and it's very sad that they didn't want to give her one or two more costumes in other scenes, I also didn't say in the video that I didn't like the light blue dress and that I didn't want to see it in the whole movie. I just said that they missed a great opportunity to show variety in their wardrobe even in scenes where a change of clothes would have been perfect but hey I'm not going to repeat what I say throughout the video because it would be in vain. • @AW-uv3cb
      @AW-uv3cb Рік тому +6

      1) Have you seen some of the costumes that were awarded with an Oscar (like Greta Gerwig's Little Women)? It's clear they're given by the collective of the Academy, which means a whole bunch of people (editors, actors, special effects people etc) who specialise in other aspects of moviemaking and don't necessarily have much of an idea about costumes, they just go by "ooh I liked this one". Criticising their choice by someone who actually spent time learning about a specific aspect of costuming is absolutely valid. (This is of course NOT to say that this particular designer didn't do an amazing job on other movies - also she is of course limited by what the director and producers want - or that you're not allowed to like the costumes in this one)
      2) Her critique of the costumes was much more constructive, friendly and actually appreciative of the designer's work than your comment where you call her "a nobody".
      3) But hey, at least your comment is helping her algorithm so her channel can get bigger, which her content absolutely deserves!

      Thank you very much for your kind words! I love 1830's fashion so I found it very entertaining to talk about it. I definitely admire the Caribbean fashion of that time, unfortunately I didn't talk too much about the middle or lower class because the dresses shown in the movie belong more to the upper class. And although the scene of the town is exquisite in terms of colors and detail, it is true that it does not look completely accurate. What's more, the designer made the costumes of the town more colorful due to their proximity to the world of the sea, contrasting with the court of the palace, which wear lighter colors and are not so striking due to their rejection and ignorance of the kingdom of the ocean.
