Maybe this worked in the 15th century, but blood feuds shouldn’t exist in a modern society. I understand that policing can be corrupt, or almost non existent, but it isn’t this 13 year old girl’s fault that her brother killed another young man. She has missed years of school, and now she will need to catch up on her schooling in the UK as well as learning another language!. This will be so difficult, she has no idea what a precarious position she is in now even in the relative safety of London. The other family should be ashamed of themselves! Would you really continue to threaten the life of a child, and force them to leave their own country just so you can avenge the death of a loved one? Shouldn’t you be the ones to end the bloodshed?. I assume you are all Christians, so what did Jesus say? To love your neighbour, to turn the other cheek? To forgive those who have sinned against you?. You should do the noble and righteous thing and leave this family alone, your quarrel is with the killer not his family.
I have seen a film about this, called Falja e Gjakut or The Forgiveness of Blood...not trying to be insensitive towards the Albanian culture or anything like that, but this documentary carries the same message as the film, in which the practice of blood-feuding (gjakmarrja) only causes more pain and hardship, and it is often the perpetrators' loved ones who have to suffer the worst consequences despite little or no involvement...
True the one that does the first murder mayby runs away his whole family and cousins and the whole last name all the men have to lock them self in the houses or they get killed. There are many ”tribes” that all men have died. Both sides
These laws were always the reason why albanians as an ethnic group where never unified even until now. The only times where the tribes didnt hate each other was under skanderbeg rule. Tbf this rule only applies in north albania and since the fall of communism albanians are only being unified more and more. Albanians in kosovo and macedonia are way nicer to each other than albanians in albania
in Albania the blood code (Kanuni) barely happens anymore its mostly around the deep parts of albania where this culture still lives. Come to the west and middle of albania and you wont see those kind of stuff infact its very peaceful.
I‘m an albanian boy but this is just ridiculous to kill someone and even more to kill someone and take revenge. It‘s really sad that our head is sticking with revenge.
I cried, Migena it breaks my heart, the laws are si stupid with this under 18 she can clearly not make it alone in Albania especially in their situation I don't even want to think what the members of the other family can do to her :'( I hope God helps them
No need to cry, the other family will not do anything to this girl. In the book of the kanun it is forbidden to kill a woman, it brings shame to the house that kills the woman. No woman or women can revenge a man according to this book. I know because i have read the book. This tv show is a feeble attempt on this family part to gain sympathy from viewers and send a copy of the tape to the English embassy to try and gain an asylum. In the history of Albania only 1 woman has been killed due to this blood feuds and even she was killed with a sniper while plowing in the mountains. She had short hair and was wearing pants, she was clearly mistaken for a man when she was shot.
I can sit here all day and tell you guys that the sky is blue but with someone who likes to argue no matter how many points you make or truth i tell it will still be argued. With your theory to kill women, today we are changing a book with laws that is more than 500 years old. What should we name it? Before you name this new book with your set of rules, i want to remind you guys of another fact that today in 2017 in Albania a man is still worth more than a woman. Don't believe me? Just look up the hospital requests on abortions in Albania.
Yes i did watch the video and once again i'm telling you that this is drama caused by non other than the family so they can have the English embassy believe that their lives are in danger to gain asylum. I doubt that you are Albanian, you have either used google translator or you were born in US and speak basic Albanian. If you were a born Albanian than you would know that the kanun clearly states that a woman will never avenge a man. Women are untouchable. For generations males have been locked in blood feuds while women did shopping and all the other errands outside. If you kill a woman to avenge a man than that kill will not count and will bring shame to the ones avenging. You will also be in double trouble because the family of the woman will come after your family for killing their sister. You go from 1 blood feud to 2 blood feuds within 24 hours and you have still to avenge that first kill you were trying to. It makes no sense why anyone in his right mind would kill a woman.

In Madagascar, revenge killing can be settled with by offering oxen to the family and admit who is wrong. It must be control fast because it can ravage a village.
In the 90s, there was a big push in Kosovo (also an Albanian majority country, and some people who followed the kanun) to end blood feuds and it was mostly successful. They’re practically non-existent now. There needs to be a similar initiative in Albania.
We do the same in 🇲🇽. The guy who killed my cousin was years later kidnapped, dragged, and then his head cut off. Cartel vengeance, Saint Death and Aztec religion, is why there's so many killings.

The best thing which should happen for all those poor people there who are in danger of blood revenge is not to escape the country they love and seek asylum abroad, but the authorities to introduce some sort of new rules and policies to help them sort these tough situations. Escape is not the answer. Change of the situation is. I saw Christian icons in the house of this family. If both families believe in Christ, in His name they could be brought together and talk about the problems and the pain. Talking through how much it has hurt for both families to lose siblings to blood revenge and give each other forgiveness would be the cure for this pain. Albanians, fight for your beautiful country and your people and change it to be a safer place for the future generations.

"Kanun" means law in Arabic where the term was originally used for thousands of years with a meaning closer to "set of rules" than the canon of the law. i.e. Kanun el Teb, or the rules of medicine written by Al Khawarazmi in the 11th century. A treatise viewed as a set of medical rules that were still in use in Europe until around 1620. The expression "canon of the law" used in French and English as well as its equivalent in other languages, comes from Kanun which still means law in Arabic. In this video, it refers to a tribal law or a mode of conduct. A set of local rules or local law.

Have you ever been in both places to compare? I know i have been in both places and i can tell you first hand from experience that London is like heaven comparing to where she lives. YES, she has a choice. Nobody is out to kill her, this is just an attempt on her part to gain sympathy to obtain her visa and permanent status in London. Again, i'm Albanian and i know the rules and laws of the Kanun so i can easily tell you that she has a choice but pretends like she does not.
T Bone I have been to Tirana and I have been to London based on the life this girl has lead and the area she is used to before living in fear to an honor killing she would much rather stay where she is not everyone is blinded by the bright lights and desire a materialistic lifestyle some people are happy with what they've got and don't wish to know what else is out there not every Albanian is after a visa don't judge others by your own standards I am from Diber so I think I also have the knowledge to comment on this

Life is crazy i wish we could behave more humanely. Everywhere i go its the same thing we have governments but they do not help us this world indeed is a sad place :(
Calling these people backwards is extremely dumb and idiotic. the reason they appear dumb is because they are ancient. they are so ancient that the laws of ancient times are still around to this day, although not in their intended form. blood feuds were common practice in identical form to the kanun in all of Scandinavia, before christianity wiped it out. I think in Albania, due to the chaotic history of waves of invasions, the Christianity was not able to unify the country and wipe out the kanun,. in other words, chaos anarchy and war retarded the development of this country which found refuge in its traditions to survive. very similar history has also occurreed in southern italy who have almost identical blood feud laws with north albania to this day

the girls are cute and albania is beutiful.they should probably sort out with their neighbors and compensate them,go back to school and develop your village.such a beautiful palce
The reason why this stuff happens is a law from the 15th century. Its embedded into our culture and the other family would never give up. My family had a history of a blood feud and only my ancestor was left alive with all of his family being killed.
MrClean the Lebanese have this law of retribution. But we also have a law of blood money. If the family accepts a payment of compensation, the feud can be sorted. If not it turns into a never ending eye for an eye
Final Prophet we never accept money ,,, how much for your son or brother? That’s more disgraceful than these monsters threatening the little girls. The kanun is clear women and children are exempt
I understand what you are saying, but at the same time im split. On one hand this girl deserves some safety to grow up in. But at the same time I dont think london/england is the best place for them. A conservative traditional family like that in a modern western country? Tbh I think they would fit beter in a more conservative country.
@@Markuden Yet london is now home to the most conservative kinds of refugees who are doing fairly well in a progressive society where women wear bikinis and shorts not burkhas. and the fact that the father is in england right now not hurting anyone like some people from the previous group I don't think your judgement on this decision holds value.

This is very sad indeed, they seem like good people despite what happened. However the reason why this father is bringing his family to England is not because he fears for their lives, but because considering his circumstances he could never go back to Albania and see his family again, “ which I think he did the right thing of course” . However this is exaggerated, “in Albania especially in “Malsia” the region where this family is from, women and children have never been touched in a blood feud “ these girls could have lived very normal lives anywhere in Albania.
Both my parents were close to the lake region on the opposite side of the border in Montenegro. This practise of blood feuds whilst historically part of my culture is still relevant today especially amongst the Catholics. They won't let it go.
@@goldcherries Jesus also turned the tables in the temple. Jesus also said I didn't come for you. I came for the children of Israel. Jesus didn't come to bring peace. Why are you selective when it comes to quoting scripture.
@@australiaprisonisland9156 No where did I say "this is the one and only thing Jesus ever said. He never said anything else". I picked it because this is usually the message most emphasized by the Catholic Church. Masses are heavily regulated by the Catholic Organization so they are uniform across their churches and as such passivity toward retribution is heavily encouraged where Jesus is concerned. And being that most Catholics don't read the Bible too deeply outside of mass, it usually those other contraversial parts are swept under the rug. So I didn't go in blindly as you assume, but instead was pointing to what the organization is most prone to be disseminating on the topic of revenge.
@@goldcherries As far as the message most emphasized by the Catholic Church perhaps you are right. This is a complex subject. The law of Leke Dukagjini is referred to as 'Kanuni' which is basically an extension of Canon Law. Codified by mostly Albanian nobles. Historically Albanians have been a tribal people with no concept of the 'State' Unlike the western world. Whilst in this instance the 'State' has stepped in and jailed the murderer. What is missing is compensation that is due to the family who have lost their loved one not to mention their dignity. A dead son who had a whole life ahead of him who was also able to lighten the burden when it came to the extended families survival. When you run a red light at the traffic stop. The State fines you. It does not carry the capacity to forgive. The same can be said of the Kanuni. The premise is simple but very direct. For example. If you don't give me the murderer then we are obligated to take a male relative. Islamically the murder of a male relative wouldn't be allowed but the Kanun allows it. I have heard of instances under communist Albania where a murderer has spent decades in jail only to be murdered the day he comes out. In this instance it was carried out by the wife who lost her husband decades ago. The elders imposed this upon her so as to restore her dignity. And their argument was 'It is not for the State to act on behalf of the widowed mother'. She bore the loss. Justice or retribution belongs to her.
@@knowledge_harvester We actually do know what happened, the brother of these girls killed a boy from that other family, it is them who say that and guessing by them not even mentioning that brother almost at all and not trying to defend him we can assume that there is nothing to defend...

@@drogirashi3145 in the blood code its said that women and children cannot be killed. Only grown men.
For my family i gone kill hes hole generation
muslim and some very isolated catholic families follow these laws. christian albanians dont follow these laws and rely on modern day laws.
Well you know revenge isnt something wrong its just you take what they took from you.
Hey. You know how they say Albanians are free? What makes you think we will listen to the government? Your high if you’d believe that.
@@hoodshqipez9347 it is wrong because it's not the responsibility of the other family members.
True story, nobody wins in these kind of situations. The one that suffers the least is the actual victim that dies.
Te shohim a Fol kshtu kur ta vrasin nja te familjes tane

Kanon is a Greek word.
in Albanian kanun used in 1470 from one man.LEK DUKAGJINI.Albania have 3 or 4 kanun diferent.

Have you ever been in both places to compare? I know i have been in both places and i can tell you first hand from experience that London is like heaven comparing to where she lives. I think in Albania, due to the chaotic history of waves of invasions, the Christianity was not able to unify the country and wipe out the kanun,. in other words, chaos anarchy and war retarded the development of this country which found refuge in its traditions to survive. very similar history has also occurreed in southern italy who have almost identical blood feud laws with north albania to this day
You’re just playing semantics, ancient and backwards are about one and the same lol. Ancient = old, from/in the past. Backwards is the same.

Compensate? What price would you put on your 20 year old son? America's yearly budget would not compensate for my sons death.
hassjeyjey it does happen but it's evident from the video this family is very poor
10:10 it depend on the judges, what a system where everything depends on a person rater rule of law.

So ironic the Catholics. Why? Jesus said turn the other cheek.
@Xhovanni Dadema This practice is also prevalent in some parts of Montenegro and Bosnia.
Anyone reading this going through a difficult time in life please stay strong and you will overcome it. ❤️💪
