Stylite's Dream - Time-Lapse Painting

"Stylite's Dream" was probably the most important painting I did during 2020 pandemic lockdown. An intense reflection on the nature of contemporary connections and the value of self-discovery and spiritual growth through isolation. I imagine that many of us felt like the Stylites of the ancient world isolated from the rest of society, so close and yet so far from the rest of the humanity. Many of us were left with only the internet and social media to connect with others; those forces at times turning nightmarish connecting us in a twisted tangle of pathologies and deepening our sense of spiritual isolation. The ancient, broken godhead at it's roots sputtering the last dribbles of life to the starving leafless tree.
The time-lapse video shows the struggle and dramatic changes through the painting's development; a cathartic journey as much for myself as for the viewer. Visually the journey is matched perfectly with the transcendent music of Daria Shakhova; "Owl's Secret" and "Winter Smoke" (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
