This movie was directed by Ti West. As previously mentioned Mia Goth plays both Pearl and Maxine. Ti West had already planned a trilogy around Mia Goths characters and had already secretly filmed Pearl when this film dropped which is the old lady’s back story. They are working on the 3rd movie called Maxxxine. I plan on getting the box set once all 3 are out!
I thought Maxxxine was also secretly filmed around the same time. Either way, I'm right there with you. X was awesome, Been trying to see Pearl as soon as I can, and eagerly anticipating Maxxxine. Also gonna grab the box set

Pearl had me screaming not because of the scares but Mia Goth kills it and that end scene. No spoilers… but Mel had to react to the film just for the end scene….
I was born in 1970, I only officially got to watch Disney movies, but when we went to the drive-in and we were supposed to be asleep when the R rated horror movie came on, I would sneak a peek. X really has the same feel of a 70's horror movie, but is actually better because the effects and acting are better.
I disagree. Although the older grindhouse horror films are lower budget, I feel like movies like Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Eaten Alive, Fulci’s Zombie, and Suspiria among others do a better job at gore and atmosphere. Watching partly cgi gore on digital is nice, but there’s just a certain charm about watching cheap, practical gore on grainy film (the eye stabbing kill in Fulci’s Zombie for example). I don’t know. That might just be me lol

I was born in 1979. Personally speaking, I grew up in some of the best music times outside of the 60s and 70s. The 80s and early 90s were just amazing. Everything from pop to rock to hip hop went beyond being just simple music, as the bands and songs back then were straight-up life-changing experiences! Also some of the best years for comedy and horror movies. And the stand-up scene was insane! I know every generation considers their time to be the best, especially as they get older and nostalgia starts to kick in hard-core, but there was just something about that time period that just seems to stand out from most of the rest.

Something I haven't seen said about this movie, but porn was basically made legal in the early 70s. So we're living right now seeing the first ever generation of 'porn stars' get old and die of old people reasons. Her being involved behind the camera is way different than her being involved in the scene. Dude wasn't in the right for not saying outright what they were doing but she deliberately slept with someone to spite him. The evidence is in the line when she asked "when did you become such a prude?" Both were trash, but she's definitely the worst of the two.

This movies themes of aging and getting old are unbelievably existential. Just the thought that we’re all gonna get old. And undesirable. And become non-sexual beings according to society. It’s like it’s conditioned in our minds to find aging repulsive. And the fact that when watching this movie the majority of people (myself included) were wildly uncomfortable and grossed out by Pearl trying to get some just perfectly encapsulates that idea.

Incase you didn’t know Mello, the old man ‘Howard’ is played by Stephen Ure, you probably won’t have recognised him, however, he starred in the Lord of the Rings franchise and played two of the more memorable orcs; Grishnakh and Gorbag. Grishnakh chased Merry and Pippin in Fangorn, and Gorbag was the orc that Sam “stuck” in Cirith Ungol. :)

If I've learned one thing from this movie, I NEVER want to see a naked old lady. Just watching these scenes with the elderly Pearl made me want to wash my eyes out. WITH SOAP.
