    BACKGROUND OF ‘ULUPALAKUA:
    An ancient Maui chief would send runners to Kipahulu for breadfruit. When they returned with the fruit, it was ripe. The chief called the district Ulupalakua or "breadfruit ripened on the back". The composer visited Ulupalakua, in up-country Maui on the southwestern slopes of Haleakala. He was so impressed by the cold mountain air, the scent of ginger and the cowboys, he composed this mele in 1947, to honor the district.

    Can you please include a few Kahiko? I love the spiritual quality of the kahiko.

    • @iHulaHawaii
      @iHulaHawaii  5 років тому

      Aloha Ruthann, I too appreciate the hula kahiko, but my hula training was mostly in hula ‘auana. I did learn a few hula kahiko, but I do not teach hula kahiko. There are similarities, but both forms of hula are very different. I hope you can find a resource that does.

      It means: ulu that has ripened on your back.
      Ulu is the breadfruit, pala is ripen and kua is back or shoulder. The song is about when ulu was transported from a far away place on the bearer’s back the ulu would ripen.

    It’s weeeh, another thing there is no “e” in Maui. Maui is pronounced Ma-like calling mom, and u ē. Not Meaui haole say like that.
