BACKGROUND OF ‘ULUPALAKUA:
An ancient Maui chief would send runners to Kipahulu for breadfruit. When they returned with the fruit, it was ripe. The chief called the district Ulupalakua or "breadfruit ripened on the back". The composer visited Ulupalakua, in up-country Maui on the southwestern slopes of Haleakala. He was so impressed by the cold mountain air, the scent of ginger and the cowboys, he composed this mele in 1947, to honor the district.

Thank you Lynn for another beautiful hula, and for sharing your culture and history with us ! Aloha !
Mahalo Becky! It's truly my pleasure. And comments like this encourage me to keep going!
Was this one easier to learn that the others?
So far my favorite, and technically easiest was the Hawaiian lullaby!
Glad to hear!
Aloha! I’m so glad that I found your channel. My husband and I just moved to Illinois and I want to continue to practice hula as well as learn more about it and our Hawaiian history. God bless you and keep up the great work!

Is there hula where you are at all?
Mahalo 🌺.
Thanks for this video. I just stumbled on this. Oddly enough, my wife is learning this hula right now with her occasional halau.
Aloha Rockysan for subscribing and leaving a comment. Oh how neat your wife is learning the same hula with her halau.
Where are folks watching from? And which halau does she dance for?
@@iHulaHawaii We're in West O'ahu. All the spouses are performing the music. Great fun.
That's neat how everyone gets to share in the hula & mele. Kanikapila!
Can you please include a few Kahiko? I love the spiritual quality of the kahiko.
Aloha Ruthann, I too appreciate the hula kahiko, but my hula training was mostly in hula ‘auana. I did learn a few hula kahiko, but I do not teach hula kahiko. There are similarities, but both forms of hula are very different. I hope you can find a resource that does.
Mahalo aunty🌺🤙🌺🤙
What is ulupalakua?
It's a place name of a ranch on the island of Maui. Stay tuned for the next video as there will be more to help answer this question!
There is also info. below in the show notes - just scroll down.
It means: ulu that has ripened on your back.
Ulu is the breadfruit, pala is ripen and kua is back or shoulder. The song is about when ulu was transported from a far away place on the bearer’s back the ulu would ripen.

It’s weeeh, another thing there is no “e” in Maui. Maui is pronounced Ma-like calling mom, and u ē. Not Meaui haole say like that.
I think you should hold the Yee before you say the haw
Mahalo for the tip!
How did you learn to "yee-haw?"
