My baby was whisked away right after delivery and had to pump colostrum. Anyone who’s tried to pump colostrum knows it’s thick and a mission and a half. My baby’s 5-day NICU stay made latching impossible. Ladies, consistency is key! Initially I was barely producing. I stayed consistent with my 8 pumps a day, not with the times. I definitely stretch, even as long as a 6 hour stretch, but always 8 pumps a day. Initially had to supplement with formula. 10 days in she was exclusively taking breast milk, 3 weeks in I was able to freeze a feeding a day. Now I’m 5 weeks in, I’m averaging 40-43 oz. Your experience might not be the same, but know that you got this mama!

@@laurenpineiro4199 I did pump at night for the first 3 months. I just continued to stretch time in between my night pumps until I was pumping in the morning and no longer in the middle of the night. My highest output was never at night, it was always at 9am. Exactly?!!! I felt pressured by my doctors office to breastfeed. I love pumping because I know I'm helping my son best I can. He has a high palette which makes breastfeeding hard. I had a emergency c section as well which makes holding him certain ways painful and I didn't get that initial hour that is so crucial for breastfeeding to be successful. He's so hard to latch and I just absolutely burst into tears because I can't do it. My worst fear is I'm out and about and I can't feed him from my breast and I didn't pack any breast milk because I thought I could breastfeed. Power to the women that can, but you shouldn't feel like less if a woman because youcan't. .

Thank you for this video!! I just had my baby around 3 weeks ago. I was so stressed out because my milk wasn't ready. He was hungry all the time and kept crying and crying... I supplemented him with formula from bottle when he was 5 days young. Everyone said its too early to and may create nipple confussion. But I felt like I had no choice but to give him bottle coz he was sooo hungry! Now he kept falling asleep when I try to nurse him :( so I decided to exclusively pump without nursing but everyone says its not possible to produce enough milk that way. Thank God I ignored these people. I just keep trying and pump religiously every 2 hours. It has been 3 days so far. My milk has gone up from 3.5 ml to 40 ml per pumping session. Still supplementing with formula but hopefully my milk will be enough for my son soon!

My son was in the nicu at 35 weeks so obviously they gave him bottle and nurses told me to use a nipple shield. Why? I don't know. My insurance's lactation consultants would not teach me how to nurse my son without the nipple shield so I ended up looking up a non profit lactation place to help me wean my son off of the plastic and just go straight to the tit. It's hard work getting a 2 month old to nurse but it is also FN hard to pump to keep up demand. You can say that it's easy to breastfeed, its depending on your kid.. Not you..

Hi. I just wanna ask why is it you are now finished pumping breastmilk? Did your baby self weaned? What age did your baby wean? Or did your milk run out? Because I am now really confused 😣 I've been pumping my breastmilk for 1 yr and I'm a working mom. I work 8 hrs a day. I've been 10 hours away from home. I got 6 to 7 or 8 oz each pump when I started pumping. And I just noticed that from 4 times during my shift, it became 3 times and now down to two times. Before, I still got 7 oz each pump twice during my shift but I noticed that If I'll pump twice during my shift I only got 3 oz each pump but if I'll pump once during my shift I got 5-7 oz. I'm wondering If it is time to pump once during my shift until he self wean since my he is now eating solid foods but I am also afraid he might not get enough milk whenever I'm not home. Please share some tips or your experience. Thank you so much 😘

    • @augustfifth92
      @augustfifth92 5 років тому +2

By the way, as I've said I pump twice during my shift. 3 oz each pump. Then all in all, I got 6 oz then my son also consume 6oz during the time I am away and I still have stash just in case. He still get the same because he eat solid food and drink water and whenever I arrived home I let him directly latch on me as long as he want. My concern is If I will pump only once during my shift, will if affect my milk supply? Because I've learned from a group that the less I pump/breastfeed the more the chance of low milk supply. Huhuhu. And I'm afraid 😭

Ralyn Pena it shouldn’t affect if you only want to pump around 16 oz a day! I hope everything worked out ! She probably stoped b cause she was tired ... I exclusively breastfed my fist baby for almost 2 years then baby number 2 was born and I weaned her b cause it was hard with baby 2. Now with baby number 2 I’m pumping and I pump 40 + oz a day. I started pumping when baby was 3 weeks old. I new he would start drinking more milk after 1 month and my gold was to only feed him directly on the bottle because directly breastfeeding was sooo hard because my first baby got sooo attached to me and wouldn’t play with other kids and cried all the time. I also plan to only pump until his 1st year because my Nipples hurt sometimes . I started pumping every 1-2 hours then 2-3 hours now I go 3 1/2 to 4 hours sometimes even 5 it depends on how busy I am but I feel I pump more the longer I go being my milk supply is already stablished

It feels like EVERYONE wants you to formula-feed. It’s a struggle to continue breastfeeding b/c everyone seems against it. They think a baby has to be super-chubby and that you’re not making enough milk. EVERYONE asks “do you think you’re making enough milk?” I am now supplementing with formula, I have noticed my baby has gone from a poop every other diaper change to only going once a day or sometimes not even that. And it smells more disgusting and looks more disgusting. I am going to try pumping, as I think my breast milk is best for my baby.

This has also been happening to me! People like the nurses from the hospital and others around have asked if I am producing enough breastmilk...and encourage using formula. It doesn't make sense, we should all encourage and find ways to help promote a mother's breastmilk supply.

  • @TheTrifs

I'm a mom of two, I breastfed with my first, my daughter for almost two years, NEVER pumped, never worried. You always produce even if you feel your breasts are empty trust me. If you eat right and drink a lot of water and breastfeed at baby's request everything is perfect. Don't stress, sleep and nap with baby and you will make as much as your baby (or babies) will need. I NEVER knew how much she was eating, sometimes I fed her for a very long time, sometimes 6 times a day, other times 10/14 times... As much as she wanted. Never had a bottle to see how much she was having. She always put weight double than other babies so I never worried that she was not having enough. Breasts produce just how much your baby eats. When I stopped with breastfeeding, i just stopped giving her. No medication, no pumping, no nothing. It was a super easy journey for me, because I decided to be that way and not stress myself about it.

With this formula shortage, I'm planning ahead as to how I'm going to go about feeding my baby when he arrives. Originally I was going to try and breastfeed if possible but definitely wasn't going to beat myself over it if it just didn't come to me naturally and supplement with formula when needed as well as exclusively formula feed if my baby wasn't getting the nutrition he needed, as well as if my mental health was not doing well with the struggles and challenges of breastfeeding. But like I said, we are suffering a formula shortage, so I definitely want to learn as much as I can about breastfeeding including all the tips and tricks. So I'm BEYOND grateful to learn from your video, that I can actually exclusively pump! I never thought of that. I figured if you're pumping, then you HAVE TO breastfeed also. I loved how you said exclusively pumping was a great way to allow others to feed the baby and not just you. It reminded me of how when my sister-in-law had her first baby (12 years ago) and she had to always leave with the baby to breastfeed and we didn't get to visit as much, with them. She would be there but just in a different room a lone (she never felt comfortable to publicly breastfeed) and it made her feel so isolated at family gatherings. So this video not only opened my eyes to an option I never thought of, but it's giving me hope that when my little one arrives, I may be able to offer my breast milk even if it's not directly coming from my breast. I have a lot of family members that have offered to help me and my partner settle in when the baby arrives, which I'm grateful for since my partner only gets 2 weeks for paternity leave 😥. So being able to have others feed my breast milk to my baby while I eat, shower, dress etc, would be super helpful! Wish me luck, when in a couple months I start my breast pumping journey!

After 2 days there was improvement I pumped and nurses began to give my son my milk.
When he was united with me he didn’t latch at all he was crying all the time. Nurse asked me to keep trying I was successfully latching him with silicone .
He was always asking for milk every hour than I decided to pump and feed him best decision ever now he is always full he is gaining weight and I am relieved that he is full and I don’t have to latch him for whole day.

I'm an exclusively Pumping mom and my first is a month old in 2 days. She's eating 2.5oz every 2-3hrs and I'm pumping maybe 2oz. It's so hard! I have a crazy schedule and so timing everything around my pumps is hard! I totally get you when you say "oh, have to go home and pump. Oh can't hang out I have to pump. Oh wait when will the movie be over? Pause it I have to go get my pump stuff." it's horrible! I'm so stressed that I'm not making enough for my baby girl and I had this mentality that I could make my body have an over supply and stop at 4 months-ha!
I think I shot myself in the foot because the first 3 days postpartum I dreaded Pumping because it was dry pumping and Hurt SO BAD! I couldn't nurse either because it was so painful for me and so for the first 3 days I barely got any pumps in just because I dreaded the pain so much. The first day I saw some colostrum leaking I flipped out and have been trying to do my best Pumping ever since. I know it's so important for my baby girl to have breast milk and whatever I can give her is better than nothing. It's so hard coming to terms with the fact that you might not be able to supply all your baby's needs and that's what is stressing me out the most.
I applaud you for sticking to the every 2hr regime! I barely make that during the day! At night I'm so exhausted I'm sleeping through my alarms and her waking up every 4hours wakes me up and then I'm beating myself up "Gah! You missed that 1-3a.m. Pump! The most important one!"
Exclusively Pumping is so much harder to do than I expected. I don't know how you stayed sane!

Melissa Frick keep going and don't give up! I am going through everything you described / feeling chained to the pump but keep at it, it will get better! I'm in my eighth week of pumping every 3 hours 8x per day (I have slept through middle of the night alarms too / so frustrating!) and finally started seeing an increase in ounces ... I have tried everything from Mothers Milk Plus pills + mothers milk tea + oatmeal + lactation cookies + as of last week, acupuncture ... my increase started around the same time i started taking the cookies and started acupuncture/ so it's got to be one of those!

Lisa Fulks thanks for the encouragement! I have noticed the teeniest bit of increase since I'm pumping 20 min then resting 10 and then Pumping another 10min when I can. Power pumps are hard for me to do because I'm so busy! And I'm trying to use everything in lactation cookies in my everyday food (oatmeal, flax seed, coconut oil) and am taking 3 different supplements. Nothing I'm doing is really increasing my supply it's just maintaining it. :( I'm 6wks pp so I'm hopeful that at 8wks something will kick into gear!

Formula is not the devil. Half the feeds breastmilk and half the feeds formula is okay. I had a prem baby and was pumping for the first month while she was in ICU for a month. It was exhausting. But I persevered for 6 months until my psychologist said listen consider formula for two feeds just so u can be sane. She wont die from two feeds. All the important nutrients and etc from breastmilk she will still get. But she needs a sane mom even more. That advice changed my life for the better.

I also tried so hard to strictly breastfeed or pump every 2 hours but i wasn't getting enough sleep, roughly 2-3hours a night, so I started to fall asleep during the daytime randomly while talking, standing, doing things etc. It got to the point where I started falling over from exhaustion so I had to start sleeping more and had to use more formula starting then. Fe Bie Nursing isn’t easy, and all the breast milk nazis don’t tell you that. If pumping makes you happy and baby is getting what she needs that’s amazing, if that’s not working for you formula isn’t this horrible thing so many make it out to be. I had a rough time because I am a serious overproducer, my kiddos would gag at letdown because there was just too much milk at once. You obviously love your little and want what is best for her, but remember what’s best is a fed happy baby and a happy mommy. She needs you to be happy and healthy and bonding well far more than she needs breast milk.

I like keeping lactation cookies, protein balls, oat muffins ect on hand as well as things like nuts, meat, cheese and yogurt... it definitely helps my milk supply having milk producing snacks around and I'm much quicker and happier eating healthy if its easy! Another tip is oat milk has been very helpful for me and its very easy to make and taste much better than the bought stuff! Happy nursing mamas🥰

I've never seen or heard about your channel. I just came across your video and you're just the sweetest! You're so encouraging!!! My baby girl is now 3 months old and I'm having such a rough time nursing her, I don't wanna just give up my breastfeeding journey and just feed her with formula only cause I know she needs my milk you know, but I'm sooo mentally drained and tired of desperately crying! She's had a rough time latching on to my breast since birth so we added a shield, which was awesome! But then she got tired of using it probably because it was still easier to drink formula milk through a bottle😑... I received two Medela Pumps at my baby shower. The string one, which is the single electric one, and the manual one. What makes the pumping so difficult is that... She always wants me to pick her up😭 I don't really believe a newborn baby can be spoiled, but mine is verrrry attached and needs to be picked up almost all the time and with my husband coming home from work exhausted, it leaves me very little time to do ANYTHING ELSE except entertaining her... Had I wanted to go out and take my usual lifestyle back, I wouldn't probably insist on breastfeeding her, but... That's what I want to do ALL DAYYY!!! Pump and feed her😭😭😭😭😭 Sorry for shoving my novel down your throat😔😔
I'll make sure to visit kellymom.com for any advice😊😊
Thank you so so much for making this video, I'm so grateful and happy to know I'm not the only one whos breastfeeding journey was not perfect...

The first was a roller coaster ride on the struggle bus headed to sadtown fighting for every single ounce…we supplemented with formula and I had a wonderful friend donate her BM to me for my daughter. The second go around I felt way more prepared and had a great stash and was able to donate to others. I've had trouble with getting my now 8 week old latch on at the start due to tongue the and me being a new mom. I felt like an absolute noob and he was screaming so much it hurt my heart.
eventually I found out I wasn't making enough due to a family trait (probably to do with thyroid and stress). I'm normally a very stressy person and having slept 6 hours total in first 5 days didn't help.
I was advised to pump after feeds, but my breasts were dead empty it seemed counterproductive.
eventually for maybe a day or 2 I got up to 1.5 oz/pumping session, but after that I had a few bas days and couldn't do any pumping and nursing was going downhill due to bad latch and baby being given formula top ups.... so yeah..
now at weeks I've tried to re-establish milk supply and latching , but it's looking depressing as I'm only getting maybe 2oz a day...
I've done a lot of pumping, but I have no idea what's up. probably not doing it often enough or have bad let down

Ladies how did you manage the 8 pumps a day? How do you feed your baby and pump and sleep and eat and drink and wash bottles and occasionally do laundry?? even with some help I can barely pump 3 times a day and my supply is stuck at an ounce and a half because that was the amount he was eating from me last he breastfed from me. I shouldn't have listened to the pediatrician and upped the formula. I should have given my body time to catch up but i was so worried about him and I'm a FTM and I was all alone. Then my lactation consultant said it was probably ok to start the bottle at three weeks old because I was supplementing with syringe at the breast until then and yes it was hard but looking back now it was heaven because I could hold him and now he is so far away from me because i am pumping all my free time and just thinking about the series of events it's like outside forces wanted my milk supply to fail... i miss him. i miss holding him. its gut renching because its like a choice, do you want to bond and love him? or do you want to give him a better immunity and intellect? Cause you can't have both. others have both but thats not for you. tough.
Now im relactating on domperidone and I thought I would get more support but.... How can I pump 8 times a day? Someone give me a schedule? and a prayer. and yes im reaching out to la leche

My boys are in their thirties now...
My husband helped by getting the baby changed & ready at night.
In the hospital one LPN said to me, Stop trying so hard! Relax and he’ll figure it out! And it was true. We were also encouraged to have a little beer. A small amount helps you relax, helps the let-down, and gives you fluid & calories.
I had a very simple hand pump, just two nested cylinders, each with a flange at the top. This was easy to use one handed while the baby nursed. Frankly though, if I was awake in the wee hours, I’d use the pump on one side and manually on the other. The hand usually worked faster!
Try not to get too hung up on amounts. At one point when one boy was ~20 months and only nursing a little, he caught a GI bug and had to be off all solid food. Almost instantly my supply returned to be plenty!

Had same problem with the bottle flow acquaintance due to poor latch / inverted nipple initially. But with pumping and supplementing, we also stuck to breast feeding sessions as much a possible. Now he is 2 months and able to go full sessions of breast feeding without his tantrum throwing. ❤️❤️❤️ Patience ,persistence, and support.

I have felt so horrible for not being able to produce enough for my twins. They started on formula for the first 2 weeks because they weee preemies & losing weight rapidly. 😢 then I got the okay to breastfeed & only 1 twin will take the boob. So pumping is essential but I’m only getting 5-8 ounces a day right now (week 3) 😭 that’s only 2.5 meals for my boys. This has helped so much!

My baby drinks 22 oz a day.... I pump that and probably another 22 oz ... I’m a cow 😂 I’ve always lactated easily but this is my first time actually giving my 3rd baby milk.... definitely on schedule helped. I gave my baby formula for the first two weeks of her life I was pumping little milk here and there bc I was not planning to give her breast milk. The problem was the formula no matter what kind was making my baby constipated ... I took her to her doc at 3 wks and the doc told me I can get my milk supply back, it’s not to late, pump every 2 hrs. I don’t do anything special but I am on a diet because I’m tired of being over weight lol. Glad there are videos like this so women can try their different ways to establish their milk supply!

Regina Rokop keep pumping! I made that mistake when I returned to work. I would only pump 10 minutes on each side because I thought that was all I had and my supply suffered. I was determined to correct it, so I made myself increase pumping frequency (and I EBF when I am home). But I also made myself pump 20+ minutes per side, I was surprised that after a few minutes of dry pumping, I would have another let down and get more milk!

Definitely keep pumping! You can have multiple letdowns during a pump session. I always tended to pump for 30 minutes at a time. There would be minutes with nothing coming out, but then i would have a letdown. Also, make sure you massage your breasts during pumping, you will get so much more out when you help the process!

Im keeping hydrated, probly not eating as much as i shuld but i try to snack, ive been stressed, and my pump wasnt working right. I have a Medela now to try thanks to a co worker. Keeping a pumping routine while working makes it even harder and my job is physically demanding and i only get 2 15 minute breaks to pump since i spend my lunch eating and taking a walk outide to relax a bit. Im taking fenugreek supplement as well to help and eating oat and chocolate breakfast bars every day for breakfast. Not sure what other steps to take. No way at all i can do every 2 hours at work and i cant see myself being able to do my best at my job getting up every 2 hours at night. Now that we’ve been home for 7 weeks, I only breastfeed but have to get a stash up for when I go back to work in a few months. I’m sad I stopped pumping but it was just too tiring to pump when we got home coz bub had really bad wind and colic and as a result got reflux as well. Now that he’s just over 3 months old he’s settled down heaps and I’m starting to pump again ☺️ I love videos like this coz it helps motivate me to pump as much as I can for my boy 🤗 ps, your little one is adorable!

I’d watched your video before my labour to prepare for the milk production. Luckily I only needed to pump 6 or max 7 times a day for the first week and then my milk started to flush in. After that I only pump 5 or max 6 times a day, each time less than 10 minutes and it’s already 1.5 litre per day. I wanted to pump just max 5 times actually, however, I’m still afraid that that might decrease the milk supply at the point that it can’t go back to the way it was or just stop completely as it might decrease the prolactin hormones that trigger milk production.
