  • Budget Vertical Gardening | DIY Shepherd Hooks | Hanging Basket Garden | Guten Yardening
Over the past year, as we have developed our yarden, we have seen the need for more vertical gardening. As a result, we have added some storebough vertical gardens (like the GreenStalk Vertical Garden) and some diy vertical gardens to our property.
In today's video, we focus on another type of vertical garden, and that is a hanging basket garden. We found that the baskets we wanted to use were too big and too heavy for the traditional shepherd hooks that you can buy at the store.
So, instead we found a way to create some diy shepherd hooks that are stronger and sturdier, and give us the best opportunity to build a great hanging basket vertical garden while growing the vegetables we really want.
In addition to showing you how to build one of these on a greatly reduced budget (compared to the storebought version), we will also show you how to hang a hanging basket using this method.
The end result is economical gardening, with more space to grow the food you need, whether in an urban gardening or rural gardening environment.
We hope you enjoy the video!
    Thanks for watching.

Good idea. I just made two hanging baskets and set them on the ground. Need a way to hang them now.

Good idea. I have one hanging from my back porch that needs to be filled. I don't like it so high up, and I do have several of those u posts I could do that with, too.

That would be great. Depending on the u post size, it really isn't too high off the ground, but it is high enough to keep pests away for sure. :) And it looks nice, I think. Let us know if you end up making a setup like this. :)

My neighbor got a shepherds hook that has two hangers on the same side hahahahaha. I don't know what they were thinking? I guess if you hooked it to a fence or something?
That's it creative. I do like the U hooks. Personally, I would paint the ends of the bolts black :D hahaha

Oh, how interesting. That does seem to be a bit counterintuitive, but who knows. I have never even seen one that way. I like your idea of painting the bolts, so we will see what we can do there possibly. Thank you so much for watching. Have a great evening!

Here’s an idea for you. If you look at Black Gumbo’s tomato trellises, you could combine that with you hanging basket idea.

      @@GutenGardening I also like your hand-made baskets!

The filling is hand made :) but we can’t take credit for the baskets themselves, but you might say we reclaimed them. :)

Great idea! I have a cattle panel arch using the heaver t posts and was trying to figure out a way to hang some baskets from the t posts. I wonder how successfull I could drill holes in those thick metal posts
...might be worth a try....added bonus is that I used 8 foot posts so have more height to work with.

Great question! We have t posts as well, and I think we would need a stronger bit, but those are extra sturdy, and I don’t see why you couldn’t give it a try with a little extra elbow grease. We would love to know how it works out for you. :)
