Oh dear, I can't believe I have been here for two hours or more, watching the video and reading comments with awesome ideas. I couldn't go back to sleep so here I am 🤣 God bless you all! ❤️
IKR? LOL
Lol I watched this and immediately thought the “freezing cans” part was not necessary, however the frozen drinks in a cold can looks pleasing for summer time 🌞
Okay so I wasn't the only one who thought this. 😂😂😂😂😂🤐🤐🤐
I think the freezing water in the cans is so they don't bend or warp when you're punching or drilling the holes of your design
I'd put the frozen cans in a vise to hold them still & steady while punching & drilling my design
@@joycemerrick6345 I've done this for years and never needed to put water in and freeze first
I think it's unnecessary. I've never frozen my cans when I've done it.
@@LadyLuck13 That was my thought!
I’ve made similar luminaries for all different seasons and my tip or hack is to grab a solar light (that come with a stake to go into the ground) at Dollar Tree. Remove the top part so you just have the round solar panel with the attached light and optional the clear frame that’s around the actual light. Place into the can before attaching the handle. Once finished hang anywhere the sun touches the panel. It will light up beautifully and automatically at night. Note* I typically keep the clear frame attached so it gives the light and solar panel height. Helps with the solar panel get more sun and the light placement is more ideal as it’s more centred inside the can highlighting the pattern. But definitely beautiful either way.
Hope this helps 😊 and thank you for sharing this super cute, easy and fun way of upcycling “trash” into luminary treasure.

That is a GREAT idea ...thank you ! ❤️
Do you have a picture?
@@kathyking5372 I only have pictures of the ones I made for Halloween but don’t know how to post them on here unfortunately. If you know how to please let me know. But I used 2 large coffee cans painted black with TRICK on one and TREAT on the other. Then a regular sized can painted black with the word OR, to go in between the larger cans. We used these instead of buying pumpkins. Worked great!
Do you do anything to make the solar lights stand up straight, maybe wedge them in a handful of gravel, also do you drill holes for rain drainage?
@@momistaken Thanks, Donna, that’s a good thing to consider. I think they’d have to hang in a sheltered area. The rain would ruin some lights.
I have done something similar with paint cans, they already have handles. I used stencil premade patterns as a punch guide, then I wired mine with a small bulb like a night light bulb. Replaced the lid and then you can hang them or sit them on the ground whatever you like.
That’s a fantastic idea!
That would be neat with a pumpkin face punched for Halloween.
Thank you . Love it 🥰
@@CutiesbyKelly i
I love this idea. I’d love to see a picture.
I love this! Thank you 😍
Adding a hole in the bottom would help prevent rainwater from collecting for mosquito condos, too. Have a great day!
As a Cub Scout leader we did this almost 40 years ago as our project… a wolfs 🐺 face … it was awesome
Aha! TEAM LOGOS!
Jute is very cute if you're using electric candles; however, if you plan on using tea lights you may want to use wire for the handle. That's what I do, as the inside becomes quite hot & spontaneous combustion is a real thing~ Those little knots hanging on the inside could catch fire very easily, as well as the "handle".
There's always thin coat hangers that could be used for handles
Great safety suggestions.. armature aluminum wire is easily available on Glamazon!
YEah, anyone that misses that will learn quick enough. Actually it's not safe at all with a flame. At least you pointed the battery candles out.
My dad made wooden candle holders for Christmas, and freaked out on me, for telling him, that he could kill those, he gave them to. 100% pure narcissist scumbag..
@@CONEHEADDK My dad made solar powered umbrellas for Christmas, and freaked out on me for telling him he could drench those he gave them to.
I understand! It keeps the can from bending! GREAT idea!
That's cool. If you use the dollar tree garden lights to illustrate a brighter night lights. Thanks for a great idea. It would work over a balcony.
You are amazing, you just keep coming up with beautiful, affordable ideas that don’t require a lot of expensive equipment. You are the best.
Are u from North Van? Do you have a brother named Owen?
Back in the day - you could buy large versions of these with one-shaped tops. There were many holes punched with differently shaped hole punches.
Candle(s) placed inside would flicker, and the flickering would cause rippling light patterns on the walls and ceiling. Very trippy. Even more so when you blow a lungful of smoke over them, and the rays illuminate the smoke in a 3D mandala.
: )
So the point of FREEZING the cans was to ONLY DRILL HOLES
That's what I'm like really why are we freezing it? 😂😂😂
Why freeze, just mark it and drill the holes still cute
Making ice in the cans, gives you a solid base to pound nail and drill against, otherwise can would
flatten.🙃
Lulu J. has the right idea they are going for in the video.
I would have thought she was going to insert some flowers or flower petals (to look pretty) and mini licour/ mini champagne bottles, to keep the cold, just gave me a GREAT IDEA for bridal shower. 😉😊
Cute. This was a school project in my elementary school in the 70’s. We didn’t freeze them though. They made great gifts for the parents!
I was wondering about that, didn’t think freezing them was really a necessary step. Thanks for your comment.
Yep...never froze them
We made them in the 80’s also.. never had them frozen either
80s here. Also, a friend of mine bought those aluminum foil jelly roll pans, cut the backs out, punched hole designs, and put them up as a backsplash! Never would have guessed what it was made from.
I agree. I don't see the reason for freezing water in the cans either!?
I've been doing this for years. At my son's graduation party spray painted them the schools colors with the schools letters as well. That was in 2011 that was my biggest project. Also do for holidays.
That's a great idea, it makes it easier to put holes into the cans without causing damage. I wonder if this icy idea would work with the more fragile aluminum soda/beer cans? Aluminum cans dent so easily and I'd think the ice would prevent that when we want to put holes into it.
I think it would. :-)
Draw the pattern you intend to “punch” before you freeze the can and the frosting won’t be a problem. You can also tape a paper design to the can and punch around the outline to make silhouettes of your loved ones or fav music artists. I like to use tin snips to cut a cute design at the top and bottom of my cans. This craft can get as elaborate as you can. It’s an easy fun way to shine beauty into your life. I can’t wait to make more!!! 🥳🥳🥳 Thanks for sharing your lanterns!! I forgot about this project. I’m really excited to punch flowers and hang them (on MayDay) on door knobs of people I don’t know. My children and I love celebrating Mayday 🥰. ~Sheeara, Alaska
Much better method! Thanks! :)
@@Mrs.VonChin thank you 🥰. Just an added technique. Building on each other’s ideas and projects is my favorite part of art.🥳 I get the ink off with the aerosol version of “scrubbing bubbles.” I’m sure there are many cleaners that work. I just happened to have that when I made them.
Ahaaaa, thanks for your idea! I'll get a paper design of a Seahorse, a Starfish or any beach theme 🐚 🦀🐬... A butterfly 🦋 would be pretty too for a garden.
@@mariamercy7317 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you. Seriously. I love in Alaska and it can get a little quiet. Lol I feel really blessed that you took the time to share your ideas with me too. I have 5 kids and I’ve built my life by selling skincare and makeup. There’s just something special to me when we take what we’re living with and share how to make it exciting again. It’s the middle of the night… everyone is sleeping and I have a big stupid grin because I’m getting garden ideas for the cans I washed. Lol Isn’t it funny the way we inspire one another. I hope you’re about to have a really good day. You made my evening. ~Sheeara, Alaska
@@sheeara You put a great big smile on my face 😄 To think you replied at this your time. I have been here since around 4am and it's 7am in Florida. 😅
Alaska is in my Bucket List 🪣
Wow, so you're into skincare products and have small children. Great for you! You are BLESSED indeed and bless others!
P.S. Happy to know I made your day. I think I'll go for my second nap. Lol... Till soon. Stay richly blessed!
This would be adorable as a tin can garland!!! Paint each can a different color according to the holiday! Easter .. pastel colors. Halloween...orange, black and white. Love this idea! TFS!!!
For sure! Those shorty little, flat sided, mushroom cans with the green label and white/red brand title are SO cute on a garland. I take the label off. And I’m sure you could use any flat sided can. I used to have some I made in my home before I moved to Alaska. But, as I was hanging them, I realized they looked so cute vertically so I only hung them with one hook! I ended up wrapping some silk foliage vines around the line I strung them from. Later, I added Christmas lights around the vines and put little 2” photos in front of the punchline of every other lantern. It made the photo glow a little from behind. Anyways, the flat sided can made it really easy to decorate them through the changes of my life. 🥰
@@sheeara Geeeee, you are amazing 👏 Great ideas! 👍
For me Halloween is of Satan so definitely not
@@rmason5477 ….then pick Easter? 😉
Easter is HOLY. Halloween is SATANIC.
I’ll be honest. I’m jealous. This got over a million views. If I were to prove to you right now that the ice was unnecessary, I would get 500 views at best. Not sure how you pulled this is off, but I admire it all the same.
They are cute to make for Halloween too. I first learned this back in the early 90's from Martha Stewart - I loved all her vintage Halloween ideas they are all STILL amazing!
About 12 years ago I stopped in at my favorite thrift store and some had just donated a ton of Martha Stewart mags - including Christmas issues. I bought them all and am glad I did because those were the good years.
Patio lights for the summer! Yay!
I'm pulling my empty cans out of my recycling box right now.
I love the reminder about how to make these lanterns and also the decorating ideas.
Now I have a new project to get ready for summer.
Since I will probably use a hammer and nail to punch the holes, stabilizing with the ice is a good idea.
Maybe paint the inside so they don't rust !
I use two pieces of wood 1" x 6" long on each side of the can to hold in place. Love making these for my back yard!!
Same here, I'd hate to have to deal with them frozen.
I did this as an art project with my preschoolers, with their own drawings such a rewarding out come.♥
Go to a restaurant and ask when they do prep for their food. This varies from location to location. Get larger cans and have fun doing tiki torch tops, Halloween sidewalk lights, and even better, Christmas lights that fit your esthetic. You can use Sterno chafing dish fuels that burn out fast but the light is brilliant. Don't forget the can lids, these can be arched and reattached to make a safety lid. Use two holes for each low end and run wire in to attach the lid. These get really hot so use proper safety and care.
CoolIdea BTW the Punch you used in the video is actually a NailSetting Tool the small pointy end is Hardened which makes it fine for doing this Project i’ve been a Outdoor Enthusiast for many years and that includes Boating ,Backpacking , and other ways of Camping in thecWilderness i usually bend wire Coat hangers to make a Handle on TinCans i carry in my Backpack to heat up Water on smallCamfires that i use for MealPreparation, Instant Hot Cocoa , and Hobo Coffee the small cans like Soup or Vegetable sized ones with a Tea Candle will make a cheap easy Lantern that doesn’t blow out super easy i’ve even use them to hang above a small Table at nighttime on my boat to eat a late meal under the altars it creates. just enough light to see what you are doing and the ridged Coat hanger handle makes it easy to hang using Clothespins , Spring Clamps ,or even a Bungee Cord for my Small Hiking tents i install Grommets on inside fabric the manufacturers leave at the seams of the tent Fabric and that’s how i will hang my “homemade”:Lanterns
The copper is beautiful!
I did this late 70's . I'm glad its back!
I've made these...so cute. I love the copper one. Lining them up somewhere with a name, or the seasons are neat too. You can also make garlands with them for Christmas or other holidays. Yours are pretty!
Been doing this since childhood. Have never done the ice cube process.
I think you might want to use wire instead of twine in order to avoid burning down your front porch. A few weeks ago I drilled assorted size holes in four cans to slide over the LED lightbulbs of my bathroom fixture. I recommend a pointed awl instead of a blunt nail set for starting the holes. That way you can forget about the freezing part.
It looks like she's using LED tea lights, not burning candles
There’s always one in the bunch …..
@@Stormy7573
You’re certainly right about that!
i used to use a giant flathead nail.
I knew I was saving those cans for something! Great idea...fun and creative...
When you misread “lighting” 💡 for “lightening.” ⚡️ 😂 Got myself so confused there for a minute....or five. 😂
Love the idea of recycling cans for the garden! 😍😍😍
3 minutes of my life I'll never get back
So cute Chas! I made some of these last Halloween. Love them! : )
Love. LOVE. LOVE THESE!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ♥️♥️♥️
Put on top of bag of rice to stop can from rolling
You should drill holes (little ones) so if water gets in there it has a exit point. Cool idea..
5 minutes I’ll never get back
Awesome! And what a nice job you did. Thanks for sharing this!
Can tea light candles be used or should there be a little sand in the bottom of the can for safety??
How fun! I’ll put these on my backyard deck. Thank you!
I use a wheat bag to hold my cans in place, works perfectly for any size can.
How cute & original!!
Instead of having the towel flat before punching, scrunch each side towards the can and it will not roll. Nice reminder to repurpose cans for other uses.
Thank Hod i just jumped to the end!
Cool idea! Question what was the purpose of freezing them 1st
To keep the can from bending out of shape. It's easier to make your design. Without being frozen your can might collapse.
My thought, personally, is a thin aluminum can/s filled with ice "might" not bend inward (cave inward) or side dent inward when drilling a hole or tapping a hole into the sides????
@@desertcandle1 Thank you for your reply, ☺ Today, I'm having a "too" wordy in details kind of a day.....hope it wears off soon. ☺
its far easier to drill a hole in a can with minimal denting than it is to drill a hole through ice and keep your apendages
@@kukachoo42 Thanks for being the voice of reason👍
If one bends, just get another😉
That was cute..👍 I originally thought the frozen can was to be put behind a fan to make a cheap a/c to cool a room down 🤔😃
Would the dollar tree solar lights work too??? Wonder if they'd fit.
Yes put some sand in the bottom. Or rocks
@@KMF3 good idea
Yep, great idea, solar lights 💡 😉
Really turned out nice.
Forgive me for asking, but I don't get the reasoning for the ice/water freezing. For what purpose is that?
I was about to ask the same thing. I didn't understand that part. Also if you mark your placement you don't need to stamp just drill.
Maybe to keep the cans from denting from the force of the hammer and nail puncture.
It keeps the can HARD so you can make the holes without bending the can. My question is what is the white paint for? I would just leave the whole can the same color of spray paint.
@@cbeaucrawford Ah yes that makes sense!
@@valfletcher9285 I made those a zillion years ago in Girl Scouts. You don’t need the ice. We called them trash yard lights. Because we made them out of trash.
Wow awesome job beautiful at night time. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Make a pattern also on the other side of the can! Think of all the light going to waste. You’d have the pattern showing on the adjacent wall
What a great video, thank you for sharing.
To hold the can in place whilst you use the hold punch you just need a wooden wedge
What was the bulb light you put in there, you never mentioned them and nothing in your notes. Thanks, I will make them too. Please let me know what the little orbs are.
I can't believe the number of people asking 'why freeze the can of water first?'.
I clicked to see if I was missing out and needed to start freezing cans. While it won’t change my life, it’s a great idea!
This can be done without freezing them but why?? Perfect idea - TFS
Why do you freeze they
@@pamkopp3284 Freezing them makes it easier to make the holes
The ice supplies resistance to hammer the nails against--and, obviously, keeps the cans from caving in when hammering against.
You can do this without freezing the water but then you will deform the shape - this is perfect to keep the shape!
So the can won’t bend
Lady you must be a GENIUS!!!!
Get an empty 5 gallon paint bucket. Place a smaller bucket inside, then fill the space between the buckets with water. Place the bucket outside in freezing weather. After the water has frozen, gently place the paint bucket upside down and jiggle until the ice "bucket" releases. A votive candle or regular candle can be set at the bottom of the ice bucket. These ice buckets placed alongside a sidewalk or driveway glow beautifully at night!
Love this idea 👍❤
@@Cboo-y1v thank you. I live in Alaska and during the winter months, these giant "luminaries" stay frozen a long time. I saw an entire driveway lined with them on both sides (4 per side). It was beautiful!
Yes I lived up Hatchers Pass Alaska. (Willow, AK) and the neighbors had their driveways lit with the frozen ice luminaries made with the large and smaller bucket for a mold.
The would burn all night in the winter and those were very very long nights! Loved the luminaries and loved Alaska!
Nice! Pretty neat! Thanks for sharing this joy!
Cute idea. I've seen people using bags of beans to hold the can still for the punching/drilling part. The freezing is a great idea to prevent crushing the can or hurting yourself. Two questions: 1) why paint the inside of the punched design, and 2) if I painted the inside of the can, would it still be safe for a lighted tea light candle?
I didn't see her paint the inside. The inside is unpainted. She painted the outside only.
there's time that I could have been making art out of my belly button lint, that I'll never get back
I remember these as a child. And I remember also teaching my boys …. But we used a nails and hammer. Or a punch. It’s interesting to see this stuff coming through UA-cam after 50 years
Wonderful Idea !!
Thank You So Muck
Strange you didn't elaborate on the light source. Or did I miss something?
Super cute idea 🥰
I didn't hear why they needed to be frozen. Is it too keep the shape when pounding the holes?
Yes
So the can won’t bend. I’m glad I’m copying and pasting. Lol
Very nice idea!! Might have to try this thanks for sharing!!
Hard to believe it took all that ✍🏾
thank you that looks very easy and pretty
You don't need ice to drill in to empty cans 🙄
Wow!! Hometalk thanks for sharing great project..
Im guessing the freezing is so the can doesnt collapse when punching it? This is cute.
Wow the copper spray paint is awesome I've never used it but I will now .
It's a great idea. But I'm wondering why the can must be frozen?
This is such a cool idea. I would’ve never thought of it. I’m not that artistic, I paint but and crochet but that’s about as far as I go. Everybody has such good ideas. I’m gonna try it this next summer. Winter just started and I might do some now! Thank you so much everyone😊
...put out " Santa's Runway ... or light the driveway for new years ... theres plenty of time ... get the kids to do it for you ...
Can't you just drill holes through the empty can, why freeze?
So the can won’t bend
Great idea ! They turned out lovely. And who doesn't have an empty can ? 🐝
I wouldn't use jute. Jewellery wire or any metal wire. I know it's just a little votive, but better safe than sorry.
Very creative thank's for sharing. God bless
You could use a PONY vise to keep the cans in place..you can get a decent one at Harbor Freight
Great idea. Very nice and easily done.
I guess the ice is so there is resistance to the metal when it is punched & leaves less burrs inside the cans?
It’s frozen, making it much easier to punch or drill …
Wow some of these comments are so creative. Keep on crafting.
God bless you. Nice idea, peace be with you.
If your cans are hanging outside where they may be exposed to rain, put a couple holes in the bottom for drainage.
So adorable!!! Thanks!!

Enjoyed your video a lot. A very inexpensive way to make appealing lanterns. I do have a suggestion that might improve your viewership. I do like that your video focuses on only one item. But my tip could help even with several items on the same video. Simply show your finished items at the very beginning of the video. Your regular viewers will come to appreciate that because they know your videos will save them time when looking for new ideas.
