- 91-95 ecus and harnesses will interchange.
96 will only work with 96.
97-98-99 ecu will interchange
97-98 engine harness interchange distributor ev1 injectors
99 engine harness is 99 only distributor ev6 injectors
00-01 engine harness and ecu interchange ev6 injectors coil pack

Thanks for the information. It gave me some areas to think about. I am in the middle of a frankenstien swap from a 97tj to an 89yj. Trying to get rid of the renix system (that also has many bad wires) and enjoy a little fuel injection. I have the injector harness and the motor harness but do not have the firewall harness. Just getting started. We shall see how it goes.

On my 98 xj with a 99 engine, the oil pressure sending unit and plug on harness was different between the 2. I was running the 98 sender on the 99 engine with the 98 harness and 98 ecu and all was good. Then the ecu went, so I put the 99 ecu in and everything worked but the oil pressure gauge. So now I’m going to try putting the 99 harness in with a 99 sending unit.

Good video! Question for you!! I have a 96 complete engine, all sensors, ecu, harness, everything! I have seen videos where people strip them down to nothing but I really don’t wanna do that. Can a person simply hook all of it up and run it as it is.? It’s going in an old jeep that doesn’t have to communicate really anything else in the dash or all the other little random things like a newer Jeep would have. Cps is already figured but thanks!
Can I use a junk yard pcm from a like jeep without having to do any kind of programming, just swap them out and good to go?

Hey budget do you happen to have a 95 Cherokee 4.0 auto trans ecu? My Jeep has a crank no start issue for 2 months now and I’m going crazy replacing parts and it still not starting.
So right now i have a 98 with a bad ecu, one of the cylinders is not getting pulse to the injector i have to replace the ecu for sure that means i can replace the ecu from a 96 to a 99 no matter the little tag the ecu has as long is 96 to 99 and a 3 conector??

I have a Jeep that is a 2000 model but someone has put a 1997 motor in and tried to convert it to coil instead of distributor. It misfires badly. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do?

False 2000 and 2001 are totally different main plug for harness but other then that good info
I put a 98 ECM in my 96 after the factory one fried, and it starts and runs but barely, is that the ECM programming or just more typical xj problems ?
96 only works with 96 doesn't interchange. Its basically a 94 95 with 98-01 ecu plugs and a obd2 port.
Can I take the engine and trans from my 2000 Jeep Cherokee xj 4.0 6L and put it in my 1992 Jeep Cherokee xj 4.0 6L ?
Look up renix to ho swap. For engine. Transmission input and out put splines are different so the transfer case wont mate to the new trans plus the tcu will probably flip out also. If your set on it you could dash swap and use all the wiring computers from a 2000 will require new holes in the firewall. Engine trans and transfer case. All as a unit.

i think the ecu in my 99 is bad because the jeep as been running very lean and all sensors grounds have been replaced and or cleaned i understand that 97-99 will work but i have a 5 speed is there a difference between an auto and a manual computer?
Auto have a tcu under the dash so the computer should be the same
i bought ecm for my cherokee xj 2000 number 635AJ then the car start and turned off after 3 - 5 second the seller said the ecm without skim but its not programmed to my car vin what will i do
Disconnect your skim module. Every non skim ecu has a blank there. Once it sees the skim module it connects to it. Making the ecu useless with out programming. Try unplugging the skim module first and unhook the battery. Stick the ebay ecu in and never plug the skim back in.
Is a 98 computer just plug and play into a 99? The 97 computer doesn’t work it’s a 1 year only ECU

99 are distributor and 00 are coil pack so not sure let us know if it does work.

What exactly makes the 96 unable to be replaced with a 97-99 ecu?
Try it and let us know the 96 have the one peice harness vs the 2 so hell it might work.
I tried putting a 96 ECU in my 99. Everything seemed to work fine except my gauge cluster. None of my gauges worked at all.

@@jessehinton480 Take distributor out and put the cam potion sensor in and use your coil pack off the old motor. The ecu will not be able to run it with a distributor. You will have to put number 1 at top dead center before dropping in the CPS. Im Sure theres a how to do that on youtube. Also may have to get creative on the coilpack I dont think the 99 had the bolt holes in the head.
I have a complete 99 and was trying to swap in 2000 wanted to keep the distributor setup i have everything from the 99 just need to know if i can plug and play computers with the harness that in the 2000 already

During my research into Jeep history I have a 95 XJ they actually did not make a 96 xj it was a 97 XJ prerelease sale of the 97 XJ
That was the jeep wrangler not the xj. There are plenty of 96 cherokees. No 96 wranglers.
