The American Trinity: The Three Values that Make America Great | 5-Minute Videos

  • Nearly every country on Earth is defined by race or ethnicity. Not America. What makes the United States different? Dennis Prager outlines the values that have allowed the American people to flourish and, unlike immigrants almost everywhere else, transformed those who arrived from across the globe into full Americans-regardless of where they were born.
    Script:
    Race and ethnicity have defined every nation on earth. Except one: the United States of America. It is defined by values.
    So, to understand America, you have to understand American values.
    They are:
    1. “E Pluribus Unum”
    2. “Liberty”
    3. “In God We Trust.”
    I call this “The American Trinity.” I made up the name, but I didn’t make up the values. They are on every American coin.
    The first, E Pluribus Unum, is Latin, meaning, “Out of many, one.” When first adopted as an American motto shortly after the American founding in 1776, it referred to the thirteen American colonies becoming one nation. Over time, however, most Americans understood the motto to mean one people from many backgrounds. To quote The E Pluribus Unum Project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, “Over the years, E Pluribus Unum has also served as a reminder of America's bold attempt to make one unified nation of people from many different backgrounds and beliefs.”
    In other words, America doesn’t care about your national or ethnic origins.
    This explains why people who immigrate to America assimilate faster and more fully than immigrants to any other country.
    Most of those who have immigrated to Europe, from, for example, Turkey - as millions have - are not considered fully German by fellow Germans or fully Swedish by fellow Swedes or fully Spanish by fellow Spaniards. This is even true of the children and grandchildren of those immigrants.
    And, just as important, few of those immigrants - or their children or grandchildren - will ever feel fully German, Swedish, or Spanish. But a Turk who immigrates to the United States will be regarded as fully American - as American as any other American - the moment he or she becomes a citizen. And they - and certainly their children - will feel fully American.
    Of course, America has not always lived up to this “e pluribus unum” ideal. But the ideal was always there. And it was applied to virtually every immigrant to America.
    The second component of the American Trinity is liberty.
    Now, you might ask, “Didn’t the French Revolution also enshrine liberty as a central national value? Wasn’t its motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”?

    I know people don’t like that some jobs like teachers don’t get as good a pay as they should but rather than upend the system we should work to better the pay in those jobs. Not saying a teacher should get the same as an athlete who makes millions of dollars a year but you can work on getting better compensation for them without destroying the American system to do it. Where a problem exists it can be fixed without saying “scrap America as is and reinvent her”.

    This is a an interesting idea. I guess the three values before watching. First I thought of Liberty and equality. I was wondering about a third one. I thought of fraternity aka brotherhood. Those are the three values that the French have. The video even refers to that. I greatly admiried the French when they had thier revolution. America and France are very similar in this regard. They had revolutions at around the same time. They value liberty and equality. They even have flags with the same color scheme. It is actually easy to sympathize with the French as a kindred spirit. They even helped us in our revolution. I watched the video. I guess two values are the same. There is liberty and fraternity. There is a nice explanation of E Plubrus Unim. It is about unity. That can be what fraternity is about. When people are unified, they will be like like brothers. I do like the claim in the video that United States is accepting of immigrants regardles of race. Awesome! Lets uphold that even more. Lets have police stop murdering blacks. Lets let Mexicans and Muslims move into America. Lets stop confining Native Americans in reservations. Lets have less racism accross the board. Then there will be more fraternity. Being American means being treated as a brother or sister regardless of race.
    There is a difference in that the video had religion and I had equality. I like my idea better. Religion has nothing to do with the founding of America. There can be morality and even inherent rights without a God. Whenever America is involved with religion, it is actually about distance between the two. There is freedom of religion and the seperation of church and state right in Bill of Rights. This isn't worthy of being its own part of the trinity, because that goes under the freedom category. It is best for clergy not to oppress the masses and tell them what to do all the time. In modern times religion is used to justify homophobia and taking away reproductive rights. In Medeval times oppressive theocracy plagued the people. If anybody toes out of line they could risk getting tortured and burned alive. There were colonists that tried to establish an extreme theocracy in the nothern colonies. That ended in failure. People were tired of the opporession, so they revolted. The religious parts of the Bill of Rights are actually the ideas that the rebels had.

    • @c.d.dailey8013
      @c.d.dailey8013 3 місяці тому

      Freedom and equality do go together. I think they are still essential American values. One thing that inherently has no equality is a hierarchy. Heirchy puts people into tiers. The top tier people are deemed better while the low tier people. This is inherently unequal. The opposite of freedom is order. Order is done by an authority. Whenever there is authority, there is always power. The people of authority are on top of the hierarchy. They have power over the people below them. There is control and order this way. The top tier people are the elites. In order to get liberty, one has to get rid of the hierarchy. Only when the the elites are overthrown can there be true freedom. A prisoner can only be free if they overcome their captor in some way. This can be knocking out the captor and escaping prison. Liberty is achieved by getting rid of the hierarchy. There are two positive side effects. One is equality. Without hierarchy there is no tiers anymore. Then everybody is at the same level. They are equal. That is equality. Equality is a natural result of liberty. They are not at odds at all. Another result is fraternity. Without the tiers to separate people, the people go together. They have unity. That forms a fraternity or brotherhood. It is the authority and oppression that tends to separate people. There is separation between the elites and masses. Elites can even use the bottom tiered people as scapegoats. That keeps the middle tiered people and the lowered tiers people separated. Fraternity is a result of equality. Once people are equal, there is no divisive hierarchy to drive them apart. Equal people can come together as a brotherhood. That is cool how I came up with this on the spot. Liberty causes equality. Equality causes fraternity. Liberty, equality and fraternity. Oh my gosh! The French were right. That's awesome. Go French!
      The best thing about the American and French revolutions is the innovation. It is a huge improvement to chance from a monarchy to a democracy. Democracy gives a lot more freedom in the government. That also leads to more equality and fraternity. There are more innovations. The Civil War abolished chattel slavery. That freed the slaves from extreme classism and racism. I am commenting the day after Juneteenth. So Civil War is fresh in my mind. The civil rights movement abolished segregation. That gave even more freedom from blacks. There are still problems today. There should be more freedom. There should be less racism, sexism and homophobia. Whenever one seems one kind of person better than another, that forms an oppressive hierarchy. There are hierarchies based on race, gender etc. That needs to stop. If all people were equal there would be more freedom. Whenever minorities are promoted in any way it makes them closer to equality. Their should also be less classism and plutocracy. The class system in capitalism is a hierarchy. The corporate ladder is a hierarchy. It is about the bosses controlling the workers and exploiting them for money. There should be more freedom by changing the economy. The difference in class should go down. Workers should have more say in their workplace. This can be done through a union or some similar structure. We should bring democracy into the workplace. Workers should have more control and ownership. They should earn more money at the expense of the boss. If workers work hard to produce valuable goods and services, they should be paid fairly for that hard work. They shouldn't just be paid a small wage while the bosses reap most of the reward. Meritocracy is a good idea. Let's allow people to actually move up. The rich confine the poor people to poverty regardless of how hard the poor people work. Inequality in wealth is not due to freedom. If anything it is due to oppression and control. America is not a meritocracy. It actually shows signs of a plutocracy. What this video says about freedom and wealth is misleading at best. What is it with Prager U video and completely ignoring these glaring issues. I noticed this tends to occor when these videos talk about the economy. One example is makers and takers. I would like to clarify this. The liberals and workers are the makers. The workers actually do the hard labor to create valuable goods and services. The conservatives and the bosses are the takers. The bosses take away the valuable stuff that the worker owned fair and square. If anything, any government welfare a worker gets can work as a reimbursement or reparation. The government takes money from bosses and pays for benefits to workers. This is something that should have happened through a fair wage. Ideally a union would help. If the government intervenes, that works too. The ends justify the means. Dude! If someone knows about the extreme classism, would that count as woke. This is something that is blatantly obvious to the poor. It is not talked about in politics nearly enough.

    Three ideals that made the United States the number one choice of immigrants from most parts of the world
    1: That we can think for ourselves
    2: The golden rule
    3: The melting pot idea
    What our family celebrated (were to God we could still do so) on Independence Day was not so much a place as an idea - the idea that we don’t need monarchs or aristocrats or clergy tell us what to believe or what to do and not do.
    If we wouldn't want civil government to promote beliefs with which we disagree about the universe and humans’ place or role in the universe, the golden rule prohibits us from urging that government promote our beliefs about the universe and humans’ place or role in it. If we wouldn't want government to enforce prohibitions with which we disagree, the golden rule prohibits us from urging that government enforce OUR personal taboos or prohibitions.
    The melting pot idea was that the culture of the United States benefited from the strengths of many cultures from many parts of the world to the extent that people from those various places mingled with each other and learned from each other. Sadly, that idea has largely been replaced by the salad bowl idea - that the ideal is for people from various parts of the world to “maintain” their native cultures by remaining aloof (in cultural enclaves) from the general population of the United States. We are being impoverished by this shift in thinking.

    #1 is not a difference in how much we value and love our felllow man, but rather a lack of patriotism in european countries.
    People come to america to become americans. People come to europe knowing that they can live in a parralel society that in some instances is so different from what that society is founded on that's it's in practice anti-european.
    In europe we love all people, regardless of race and religion etc. Just as you do. It's just that immigration here has been more extreme (atleast until recently) and a lot of people has come here illegally and caused huge problems and divides.
    It's a statistical fact that immigrants from some countries don't want to or can adapt here. They do not work and are extremely overepresented in crime. Even the children of immigrants, which in many cases are even worse.
    You simply cannot say that this difference between the U.S. and Europe is due to a difference in values, when it clearly is due to a difference of other circumstances.

    I came to America in 1963, I was 13, from a wee tiny island in Shetland, Scotland. Five years later I went to Vietnam; that's when I became an American Citizen. Just because you get here doesn't mean you are an American. Rome became so full of itself that, by the end, brought on the end, their military was filled with Non-Romans. It counted on it's ancient reputation for its protection. Surly once someone got to Rome and saw the obvious benefits, all would want to be a Roman, a Citizen of Rome...and like Rome we are too fat and unappreciative of those before us, or care less about those before because they are not ME. I live as I did on my island, as my parents and people on the island told us, but more important than that, they SHOWED us how to act. We are TOO EASY and that's WHY things are where they are. The Chinese, though i'd imagine all cultures have similar sayings, but the Chinese say: the happy man is the man who knows his boundaries. Here, in The West we have NO BOUNDRIES so there is no way to see your uniqueness, anything that looks like a Culture. Every 65 minutes of EVERYDAY a Veteran puts a bullet in his ear. No other group of people has such a tragic statistic. But of all groups no group is more put upon than the military. If you want a say in any group you must have "skin in the game". Only those of us who have braved the bullets and bombs of war should have a say if WE go to war. You MUST EARN your voice. But you must have people who understand the logic in the service of your country and your people. I've been to war. That war of mine was NOT of my doing. The people who start the wars have NEVER been to war and have no intention of doing it now; so they send your kids and kin to be ruined while they and theirs PROFIT from your families loss. Most all the people I know who went to war do NOT want war. You don't deserve the right to vote (et al) until you've done something for everyone...by the way, military service, like the service I was in and those before me were in, is SLAVERY. You DO NOT have a life. Your life is now in service to everyone. You are told what to wear, when to wear it, how to wear it, and you could be thrown in "jail" at the whim of someone with a higher rank then you. You, in the military, are there to guard The Constitution who's protection you give up when you are in the military. You see, as a military person you are now under a special law, The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Even a murder in prison has more protection and freedom than do you in the "real military".

    I think this is a very interesting video, but I think Prager is largely wrong about what American values are. At the end of the video he mentions how many Americans want to change these "American values". If a majority of Americans, or even just a sizable minority of Americans, want to change them they are not Americans values. For national values to be national values, they have to be something the vast majority of the nation naturally wants. So Americans wouldn't be at risk of losing them or changing them if they were actually American values. I also dislike how he implies that "American values" are inherently better than European values. He is treating American democracy like a religion again. I like to think Christian values are better than both American values and European values. But as much as I disagree with Prager, I at least respect his effort to understand what our values as Americans are. It is certainly a question worth asking ourselves.

  • @justinsims655
    @justinsims655 3 місяці тому

    The problem with "liberty" as Prager defines it--also often called "equality of opportunity"--is that, at best, you can have it for a single generation. Then you end up with progeny that begin at different points due to their parents' choices, which leads to unequal opportunities.
    This still works if we neglect individual liberty and consider only, say, the liberty of a bloodline. But bloodlines aren't people, so I place little moral import in them.

    • @Letmedoubt
      @Letmedoubt 3 місяці тому +6

      Equal opportunity means you can pursue whatever aim everyone else can. Doesn’t mean you get to have an equal start. It wouldn’t be fair if parents couldn’t provide benefit to their children.

    • @justinsims655
      @justinsims655 3 місяці тому

      @Letmedoubt Then liberty is trivial. Any country in which a rags to riches story is even theoretically possible can claim to value liberty by your standard.
      Probabilities cannot be ignored. Their equality is what makes games fair, for example. You wouldn't want to play a game with me if I got free mulligans with cards, or free rerolls with dice, just because you could still theoretically win.

Italians et al turned out to be great, patriotic Americans, minus the Italian mafia. The difference between then & now is Ellis Island. There was a screening process for coming into America. Now, it's a free-for-all and no one knows who's entering. Is this immigrant a decent, hard worker who'll become a good American? A criminal intent on brutalizing Americans? Europeans and Canadians have equity... that means equal outcomes without equal effort, training, or experience. Equity means communism, not liberty.
