    Hi Thomas. I like it that you showed us a bit more after the shooting. I do belive it was the first time we sawsomething near gralloching in one of your hunting videos. For me it's a part of hunting as is the preparation of the venison and the cooking (if there is one to do). Great job and thanks for your hard work!

    • @THLR

      Thanks for that, I wish all hard work could be this enjoyable. Unusually lucky with the weather on this trip, so that makes everything that much easier.

    Did I hear right, he said you were too slow..? I thought you did a excellent job! You must be a wizard at cooking Venison Thomas! Thanks for the video.. Dan

    • @THLR

      Yup, he was a bit disappointed I wasn't able to shoot all them. No, I'm better with red fish and gamebirds than venison. All of these deer enter the commercial foodchain via gamedealers, so there's very strict rules regarding what I can and cannot do with the deer.

    • @danmacdonald1291
      @danmacdonald1291 8 років тому

      I wasn't aware that game dealers took animals from anyone but professional hunters. In Australia, to the best of my knowledge, every animal must be head shot to be considered suitable for human consumption. Well either way Thomas, it was still impressive shooting in my book!

    Beautiful video in every regard. Thank you very much Thomas for taking the time and effort to put these togather for us...

    I miss your Grendel...

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      My Grendel will have to stay missed I'm afraid. It was a nice little rifle, but I didn't read the Swedish legislation properly and it wasn't legal for the ptarmigan on the mountain so it had to go. Tried to replace it with a 221 Fireball (failed project) so ended up with a 17 HMR.

      Does the legislation allow for say .. a .20 calibre centrefire ? They seem to have long reach and good supply of powder and ammo. Many variants too. Keep up the good work Thomas :)

      Pao emantega Not sure, I expect the 204 ruger would be too volatile for a gamebird so haven't investigated.

    Hi Thomas, congratulations on your successful stalk and hunt. Sorry to hear you can't bring the venison home but I guess that is to be expected considering you are hunting in a different country.
    I took my first deer near the end of November with my Tikka T3, a nice 8-point whitetail. Granted it was from a much shorter distance than what you accomplished here. Happy new year and thanks for the videos.

      Congratulations, hope it was a good experience! I don't know if you have game butchers in your area, but if you do I highly recommend them. The money spent is usually recovered with the extra sausages etc produced.

    • @winchestermg

      Almost the same here with the fallows,the have different behavior than roes.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      I've seen the fallow in Sweden, but don't really know anything about their behavior or habits. For some reason I have the "bambi deer" syndrome when I look at fallow, I think of cultivated city parks and renessaince gardens. Probably a result of seeing them in deer parks.

    @williamsenior1795 8 років тому

    Ive just spent a week near there but in forestry and above the tree line. 5 days, 6 hinds my trusty .270. Nice shooting. The higher pitched crack is your signal to shoot the next. If it is a dull thump, you have problems and need to shoot again.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      So I've been told and have been coached to follow that rule. When my Sordin ear defenders doesn't cut the noise at the wrong time (my current pair are not 100%) it works fine. Was this the same type of economic forestry I'm used to further south? I've grown somewhat weary of the large, ravaged clearcuts and it was very nice to see something else.

    • @williamsenior1795
      @williamsenior1795 8 років тому

      Yes, although the hinds I shot where on the tree line going on the hill, some in corries, but not clear fell as it is a ballache dragging though that stuff.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Yeah, who hasn't disappeared into a hidden pit after a few trips. It's almost strange one doesn't see more injuries from that work.

      Hagge Bänke First time I visited this part of Scotland myslf, it will not be the last. Compared to roe, very nice to wake up at a normal time and know the deer will be on the hill and visible.

    I try to take out what I think is the lead doe "oldest " and if she drops usually the others stay put for follow up shots on other deer. Being allowed to take three does a day I use this strategy.

    • @THLR

    I have used 25-06 with 117g SST, for deer shooting in Scotland and my homeland,Wales for 20yrs and now Tahr and Chamois in S.Island NZ.
    It is much better than 7x64/270 etc.
    I have just purchased a mk 5 Accumark in 257 Weatherby mag for a trial with 110g Accubonds on longer range animals.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Should work fine, the 25 caliber combines velocity and low recoil very well. Over here you'd be hard pressed to find a 25 of any kind, I saw a 25-06 perhaps 20 years ago and have never seen one in a hunters hand. This is mostly due to legislation, a 25-06 wouldn't be legal for anything bigger than roe which will push most people over to a 6,5x55 or a 308 so they can shoot red deer etc.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      fisherhunter66 Thanks! I use an RPS Titanium, it weighs around 450 grams. Yes, center of gravity is low, I'll never go back to a model that puts the rifle on top. Several manufacturers have discovered the benefit of such construction, so I think shooters will have more and more choice here.

    That was freakin´amazing shooting, young man! And not only doing the shooting with your rifle, but even the shooting with your camera and the post production is something sepcial as well. You are about to become the hunter´s version of Lars Monsen....;-)

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      I really, really hope I don't have to suffer as much as Lars Monsen; I remember especially well in Across Canada when he was sledding across Hudson Bay with shin-high water on top of the ice. What a misery and simply not possible to strike camp anywhere, talk about being vulnerable to a change in weather. But I will try to improve the films a little in 2017 as I will be investing in external microphones and figure out how to edit sound in post-production.

    Nice video and very good shooting ! Judging by the smoke, that buggy must be a "smelly" two-stroke engine.... :-) Two questions : 1. I've noticed you do not use disposable (latex) gloves for gralloching....is there a reason ? 2. Why don't you consider using a cartridge holder to put on your rifle's stock ? Very handy for quick reloading....:-)

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Thanks for that Giuseppe. I'm not a mechanic, but there certainly was something wrong with that Argo. 1) I forgot to pack them. I do use gloves, not latex but vinyl as they are stronger. 2) You will see it in a later film. The rifle doesn't leave the shoulder when I'm reloading, so having the cartridges on the riflestock is an awkward place to reach. I also don't like exposing my ammunition to possible pollution until the very last moment. I will most likely have to make a special flip-open holder in a signal colour, the plastic box certainly doesn't do this job well enough.

      stsekse Always good to know "hvor landet ligger". He is of course right, he literary hunts for a living and the imposed conduct from my own hunting culture (make sure deer is dead, watch it fall) doesn't work too well for him (shot felt good, heard the smack, deermis dead on its feet -next deer!). He was a little disappointed I didn't get all of them.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      In theory it can be had in any scope, but I have not approached any makers with this reticle, it was made as a demonstration piece to show/explore how certain design element will impact the shooter's workload. The design chosen is not the commercial product. It works very well, but this Concept design is too radical to be a commercial success. If manufacturers perceived a market demand, I'm sure it would be out. I have however contributed to designs that could possibly be available late next year.

    Hoi thomas when you make a shot without your silencer an hour after sunset ( low light conditions) what about the muzzle flashes. I do not know if this is the the correct word. My first rifle was a 7 remington magnum. I could not see what the reaction was of the deer or other animal when the bullet hit it.because of the muzzle flashes. Is this also the same for the 6.5-284 . Here in belgium is not legal to use a silencer. what about your new reticle?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Muzzle flash is not an issue when using silencers, it hides a flash very well compared to ordinary barrels. My new reticle? It is a demonstration piece, it is not for commercial sale. The commercial version has about the same functionality, but it is not so radical in design.

      I prefer not to be to explicit, but the hints are all in the film. Just eyeball it, it'll be close enough. Yes the last deer was shot in the only vital spot that was presented to me. I measured it for size with the reticle, and the target number it was larger than my accuracy number.

    Good shooting!! Could the pro actually have shot better than what you did or does he only critique?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому +5

      No, there is no critique in his statement, only appraisal as he IS coaching me to be a better hunter - he is literary showing me the ropes as I asked him to. Here's what I got from his input "Thomas, your shooting is perfect, but if you learn to listen for the smack of the bullet you will know that the deer is dead on it's feet. The smack makes it safe for you to switch to the next deer, and with your shooting, that's almost 20 seconds you can use to shoot more deer. When you learn to listen to the smack, your speed will move to the next level..." So no, it was no critique. It was a huge compliment and the coaching I needed to improve.

    Excellent shooting and video as usual, bud! No luck on an elk this year here in Montana.
    I was wondering what kind of cheek riser you have for your norma? I need a cheek riser for my T-4 manners stock but don't want to send it in to get one built just yet and the one on yours looks perfect! Also, how many rounds do you have downrange on that barrel burner of a round? I have heard the norma runs quite hot. I volunteered for a gun competition here last weekend and most of the competitors were shooting 6.5 creed, some 6.5 lapua/6mm lapua, and one guy was shooting a highly modified 6.5x284 norma with a proof research carbon fiber barrel. It appeared to do very well competition wise, and the wind was a major factor, but those barrels are easily $1200+ USD after chambering...not exactly an economical choice for competition guns, IMHO, unless you have deep pockets(which this kid appeared to have).
    Cheers,
    Darrin

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      I get roughly 2500 rounds in my 6,5x284. It still shoots, but it doesn't have that "extra" at 600m then. With a 6,5x55/6,5x47/6,5 Creedmoor I'd expect closer to 4000, so it's really a no-brainer if you intend to shoot. I'll be switching back to 6,5x55 myself, simply because it is such an easy cartridge to shoot in Norway. If I could chose ANY and have ANY 6,5 available for the same money, I'd most likely go for Creedmoor. I have this cheekrest vertebrae.no/thlr-cheek-rest.html?SID=0lukqnmr8roci88f404js03bh4, but I'd say you get much of the same function from this www.triadtactical.com/Triad-Stock-Pack.html or even this www.hornady.com/store/Hornady-Cheek-Piece/.

I've never been able to capture a hunt 100%, but at least the films are a fair representation of the hunt.

    What brand is the sweatshirt??? Is waterprof?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      It is Bergans Microlight Anorak colour pale olive. It is windproof and breathes exceptionally well due the thin fabric, by far my favorite hunting jacket for weather like this. With a wool sweater underneat it is really nice for all dry weather. It is no longer made in hunting colours, but it is possible to find some on the internet in correct colours www.greenland-outdoor.de/bergans-bergans-microlight-anorak-pale-olive.html. If you want a waterproof jacket, Orvis makes a waterproof (more noise) jacket with similar qualities www.orvis.com/p/encounter-jacket/2cl0

    What do you mean hundreds of deer a year? What is the tag / bag structure in the U.K.?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Tactical Tshirts Literary hundreds. One of the guys needed close to a thousand deer taken from his lands, another must shoot roughly 700 in the forest, from the areas in this film they need to take of 1200/1500 I think it was. So a lot of deer on few hands. There just isn't enough leisure hunters to manage the lands properly.

      If the landowners are brave enough to bring some wolves in, the deer will soon be under control. Controversial though. It'll sure scare the folk who are out backpacking. I've been surrounded by a pack of dingoes in the Australian Alps. Their howling as they form up at night puts a shiver in your spine.

    Good shooting sir! But let that be a lesson.... no quick enough between the 1st n 2nd shot. Ye heard it hit, reload and shoot again😄. I'll bet you were buzzing like a fridge after that day out. Well done 👍

      raymiebhoy100 Yeah, it actually was a good lesson. Can't say I'm confident enough to leave the deer before it falls. Was shooting deer in harder weather later this autumn, and his lessons was certainly helpful for me to be harder on the deer.

    • @hennaduplessis8238
      @hennaduplessis8238 8 років тому +1

      I think it is the ethical and responsible thing to do to stay on the deer until you are 100% sure that it will die. I have learnt this the hard way with a Brindled Gnu in South Africa. Shot the second one after not making sure the first one was dead, spent the whole day tracking it which could have been avoided by making sure it is dead. So although the guide said you were too slow, I think you did the right thing.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому +1

      Thanks for that! Yes, I too tend to watch them or shoot them again if I'm uncertain. The first reds I shot had a few bullet holes in them as I'm very much used to roe deer dropping straight down, the reds simply needs a few seconds extra to die.

  • @bouillefabien1195
    @bouillefabien1195 8 років тому

    Hi thomas.
    So, just by hearing the impact you could have known that the deer will die soon, did I get it?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому

      Yes, the professional heard the solid smack of the bullet when it hit the animal, and with HIS experience he could tell right away that the deer was hit good and would die soon. I did not hear the smack of the bullet as my ear defenders cut off the sound.

    • @MrFREDANG
      @MrFREDANG 7 років тому

      a shot to the chest is a very solid thud and sounds different to a shot that is too far back i.e. the guts, which can sound like a wet slap and can also sound like a pop if you hit the stomach. Thats a massive positive with the sound moderators in that you can hear the impact much more clearly!
      Roughly how far out was that last one? Long time between impact and the sound coming back!

    • @THLR
      @THLR  7 років тому

      Yes, I think sound moderators and bipods are the two biggest improvements to overall deer stalking. The distance was nothing spectacular, and I prefer not to be explicit about it.

    • @MrFREDANG
      @MrFREDANG 7 років тому

      Well we actually prefer "nothing spectacular" on the bit that I stalk in Scotland, it shows superior stalking skills, sportsmanship and respect for the quarry in ensuring a clean kill every time. We try and limit our shots to within 200, or 300m VERY maximum!

    • @THLR
      @THLR  7 років тому

      MrFREDANG Same ethics as me then. I think I shot my gems at 30m and tahr at 70m, but that was me stalking for myself and not somebody elses cull. A quick kill and clean carcass is needed regardless of range.

    Nice shooting and nice shot placement, which caliber did you use for this hunt?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому +1

      I use 6,5x284 with 140gr bullets for all my hunts. Hornady Amax, SST, ELD, Nosler Ballistic Tip, Sierra Gameking etc.. they all seem to produce identical results.

    • @alentatalovic5476
      @alentatalovic5476 8 років тому

      that is nice caliber but rare in my country, it is similar like 7X64

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому +2

      It is rare here too. 7x64 is very, very similar and should do exactly the same thing on deer. If I were shooting 7mm, I'd use the 7x64 myself - many good bullets and quality brass available. Here, 6,5mm bullets are more available than 7mm as 6,5x55 can almost be considered our national calibre.

    • @alentatalovic5476
      @alentatalovic5476 8 років тому

      in my country most hunters have 8X57JS but I think these faster calibers such as 7X64, 270 win, and 7 mmRM are better for instant kill.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  8 років тому +1

      We've been seeing growing popularity of the 8x57 with the growing wild boar population in Sweden, as well as the 9,3x62 which has always been fairly popular here. 7x64 has for some reason never caught on (strong 6,5mm competition I suspect) and of course 308 and 30-06 is very popular.

      Not really, I just drop any pretence of studied intonation and speak English in my Norwegian dialect. After all, we had a fair amount of Vikings travelling from Norway to Scotland and the languages had a fairly large exchange of words and expressions.
