I connect a camera to my Celestron Edge HD 11 telescope to take a close-up picture of the planet Saturn from my backyard.
Saturn Opposition takes place on August 14th, 2022. The ringed planet will make its closest approach to Earth, appearing at its largest of the year.
The final image is a stack of the best 2000 frames of about 15000 taken with the ZWO ASI585MC camera. There are certainly better pictures of Saturn online, but this is one of my best images of Saturn to date!

It's a beautiful and humbling experience viewing these mythical planets that you learn and study in school, but few ever really see with their own eyes.

I took a photo of Saturn a few nights ago. The moon was so bright and I couldn’t get a good image lol! I still saw Titan and Rhea (the two largest moons of Saturn) and it’s rings. No matter how many photos I took, the image will never match what I saw. Saturn is gorgeous! I can’t wait to see Mars for my first time! Thanks for you videos Trevor, your an inspiration to me and my family ⭐️ 💛 ⭐️
I also have that feelling, pics are nice and all, but nothing can match you seeing it with your eyes, not even Cassini's

@ Mr Crazy I as well had trouble with the moon beign so bright I could not take a picture of Saturn or Jupiter but what I saw and what my kid saw will forever be engraved in my soul some things are just worth watching than taking pictures

I've bought a telescope during the lockdown and when I saw saturn for the first time and the rings, I cried. Same day I saw jupiter with 4 moons and the red eye/spot. It was amazing .
Know what you mean. I went out to see the Supermoon but when I saw Saturn to the upper left I had to shift my viewing focus. I am amazed I can see the rings of Saturn, on a planet over 820 MILLION miles away from my backyard. I stayed up way too late in awe of what I was able to see. It's hard to explain to people who have never seen it like we have.
One night I went looking at random stars with my camera, and then I was blown away when I spotted Saturn by chance-l realized right them how I took the majesty of the night sky for granted, and it made me sad (for my entire life up until that moment, anyway).

Trevor, thanks for all you work here. I got my telescope out for the first time in about 5 years this evening. My 10 year old daughter begged me to wake her up as she loves space. We have been out here looking at saturn and jupiter for about an hour now and wont be going to bed any time soon.
I have enjoyed every video you have out out (can't really think of one clunker), but your voice-over on this one was extra special. The "world" in 2022 is a daily adventure and you talking about Saturn making our world just a little bit smaller was well stated. Keep up the great work!!

I began to tear up when the final image was shown and I’m yet to see it myself through a telescope. Even just seeing it on my screen is a moving experience. Thank you for displaying your amazing work.
First time I ever saw Saturn was by complete accident. I got home late from the shooting range and it was really dark on the farm. I saw something bright in the sky and pulled out my spotting scope and as I held it there I thought to myself man that looks like Saturn. And it was Saturn and it was the coolest experience ever makes you feel really good about the universe you live in

Seeing Saturn for the first time through my little Celestron Power Seeker 127 really solidified my love of astronomy and my eventual growth into astrophotography. Thank you Trevor for all the inspiration and guidance you give us new comers! Your comment about Saturn putting things into perspective really struck a chord. Cheers, sir!
My favorite thing about this video is that I can hear the sound of insects in the background during the motivational/emotional part of the voice track, which tells me you recorded that audio under the stars, when you felt it and meant it. That is top-notch.
I also took a photo of Saturn last week including 4 moons with my home-built dobsonian telescope without tracking (300mm primary mirror).
Every 20 seconds I needed to manually adjust the telescope position to get Saturn in the field of view again, but I was very happy with the end result.

I haven't got a telescope yet but my Celestron 15-35 x 70 zoom binoculars can see the rings of Saturn. It's small but you can see the black space between the planet and rings. Like you said a life changing experience. Makes you feel so small in the universe.
Nice! I have the 15x70 celestrons, find it hard to keep it all steady though. Do you always use a tripod when using yours?
Yup a tripod is a must. With the 15 x 70 you will see Saturn more as an oval. The zoom feature let's you see the rings.
@@robl6933 that's cool man, I didn't know there was a zoom version of the 15x70! Good to know. I got mine at a bargain price from a shop closing down years ago, great quality instruments. Binoculars are nice for when you don't want to mess around with a telescope. I just got myself a heavy, oldschool used video tripod from ebay, this should help massively with the stability. I don't think the new, cheap and skinny tripods would be up to hefting such a heavy pair of binos! Will give it a go next time it's clear around here
Cool. My set up was fairly inexpensive. I got the tripod for 100 dollars on Amazon. Can hold 10 pounds and can get to 7 feet tall. And the zoom Celestron was around the 200 dollar mark. I bought it a few years on Amazon. Fairly cheap way to see Saturn's rings and you can see the lines on Jupiter. It's small but cool.

The planet Saturn is a jewel in our night sky, when I started this hobby 11 years ago I used to do planetary imaging first Jupiter then Mars & when Saturn came round I were blown away, I remember seeing it for the first time & instead of imaging it I just stared at it for hours through an eyepiece just mesmerised by the view. I did image it a few nights later & back then I were using a Skywatcher 200P & EQ5 pro mount & found that a 3X barlow did a pretty job at 3000mm but any more than that & it turned to mush. I certainly was pretty average doing planetary & over the years they got lower & lower so harder to image in the UK. I noticed when I were out imaging the Bubble nebula that Jupiter was nice & high again so maybe a scope with a nice long focal length will be needed soon.

Just bought my first small dobson tabletop (by your advice) 2 weeks ago. Needless to say I was VERY excited to see Saturn's rings for the first time.
I think you would probably like to spend some time here where I live - Scottish highlands. Dark skies galore (when there’s no cloud of course). I’m just back in from looking at Jupiter through my binoculars- it’s moons are so bright at the moment.
I just love what you do and your enthusiasm is infectious. When one looks out beyond our atmosphere at the enormity of space, you just want to yell out to the inhabitants of earth ‘just get on with each other - step back from your craziness’!

Me and my family just took a picture of Saturn last night , it was one of those Surreal moments, because we just bought it first Telescope a month ago and for many days could not get the focus right for a minute I thought it was broken lol.
Anyways as a person who’s always loved looking at the sky and science in general , finding that first dot in the sky and always thinking it was a star until you put your telescope right on it and focus it , and bam a planet right before your eyes.
My main hobbies are cars Japanese cars to be more precise , but now that I got a 6se I can’t stop looking at upgrades and add ones , and figure out what a refractor vs reflector are , it’s been so fun , so now ima have to split my hobby money two way lol.
And to tell the truth the reason I bought a telescope is because I found out I can take picture of the milkey way with my phone camera , which i never knew I could do that until I saw a UA-cam short on it, so I decided to give it a try and what do you know…. nothing so I looked it up and found out what long exposure was and RAW formats all things I never knew what they were. Long story short , when I finally got it I thought it was the most amazing thing , so decided to buy a telescope , now knowing what I do now obviously the 6se wasn’t the best choice for astrophotography, but it been really fun looking at planets and actually learning the night sky with it use one the glass eye piece , I’m looking for a refractor scope now so I can build another telescope for the long exposure photos, but it’s been kinda hard for the fact there so much information and products lol.
What most beginners cannot help to underestimate is the importance of a good mount. Beginners start to ask about which telescope they are supposed to buy, whilst ignoring the seemingly boring mount. Without a proper mount, the best telescope in the world will not do much good.
I could take nice pictures from M31 Andromeda with my modest Sky-Watcher EQ5 mount and a Sky-Watcher 120/600 achromat. All it took was a proper polar alignment, after which the RA-motor took care of the tracking and the old Pentax DSLR took an array of subs. For Jupiter and Saturn, I used the same mount, on which I put the 190/1000 Mak-Newt and an astro-camera to catch video's in RAW-format.
Now, I also have a Celestron CGEM mount. Second-hand, but still a good mount, and sturdy enough for the rather heavy 190/1000. The EQ5 is also good, but simply just not heavy enough.
Never underestimate the importance of a proper mount and what it is supposed to do for you.
Maaaan!! This was sick, loved every second!! I really feel the urge the put my SCT on the mount and have a go at this myself now!

Great video Trevor! I have been doing planetary imaging with a smartphone handheld on my 8SE and the results are so amazing! Can't believe that astro imaging has become this easy now a days. And the music is good as always. Looking to get a dedicated planetary camera now.

I have really been enjoying watching your videos. It may be time for me to get back into astronomy, all I ever did was visual with an 8" Dob, but I had a blast with it ( still deep in the garage ) and was involved in a club with a low and high level site for star parties I occasionally went to. They had everything from a lot smaller than mine to a 20" obsession Dob and several into your kind of astrophotography. I always thought my next step would be a larger Dob, but watching your videos has me interested in perhaps trying to dabble in your direction, a totally different direction for me. Thanks for all you share, you are an inspiration.

The ring is quite bright. Probably due to days of opposition. It could be interesting with a picture 14 days from now, to see the Seerlinger effect, of ring brightening.

Half a year ago, I got to see saturn through my telescope and it was awesome! The image you took was great for capturing the Casini and Encke division and grabbed some high detail that you normally wouldn't see.
Although astrophotography is starting to become a thing of the past for me, I was glad to take a part of it and I'll definitely keep watching your content because it's just that good.

Love the video! After years of following you on UA-cam, I finally took the plunge last year and bought a telescope. Getting to see Jupiter and Saturn with my own eyes is something I will never forget. That night I also got to see and HEAR a meteorite streak across the sky. Thank you for the inspiration!

Of course, compared to a picture, well, just Cassini has blown my mind, the actual human eye tissue and visual nerves stimulation from a a planet will never win.

I was a bit late to get the optimal photo, but I finally got the Cassini Division for the first time recently and I couldn't be more happy about it.
I've had great seeing one night and got that kind of resolution on Saturn near zenith with my 6" Newtonian and eyepieces years ago. Hope to see those conditions again.
The humidity in southern New Jersey where I live is always high and disgusting. It’s really daunting on me when I wanna shoot at night. I need “Goldie locks zone” weather conditions. I’m only working with a canon, star tracker, and a rokinon 135mm F/4. I’m trying. Gotta be persistent. Great video as always Trevor. Hope you enjoy the new back yard!

amazing! im still new at this and dont have much in the way of equipment yet, but i got some decent pics (for me) of saturn with a celestron starsense 130 telescope and a pixel 6 pro. nothing compared to your content though, i love your videos they always motivate me to try for better and better captures.

I still remember my first encounter with Saturn through my old Acuter fieldscope back in 2006.
Just something special to see, and I still love watching my friends reactions when they get the oppurtunity to spot the ringed planet.
im really interested in astrophotography, I now use an Skywatcher refractor, and if any have some tips regarding software for Mac, i would really apprechiate it =)

Just finished observing Saturn in my Janky little telescope in Fallbrook California, my first time !! Hot damn, its tiny, but the rings are perfectly defined, I made a bunch of Observations of Jupiter several years ago when it was close, and got 4 moons at once.
But SATURN ! never thought I could see it with my little Celestron telly.
So cool.

I saw it last night for the first time on my new 130 SLT, it was AWESOME.
I got access to some binoculars as a pre-curser to a telescope one of the first things I went to check out was Saturn. Though a small speck in the sky I was still able to resolve other objects around it that my eye alone could not. It makes me very excited for what a telescope could see. I am still excited to be able to gaze upon things like the moon and some sweet constellations in the meantime :p
