Please enjoy our version of Stan Rogers' "The Mary Ellen Carter".
THE MARY ELLEN CARTER
She went down last October in a pouring driving rain
The skipper, he'd been drinking and the Mate, he felt no pain
Too close to Three Mile Rock, and she was dealt her mortal blow
And the Mary Ellen Carter settled low
There were five of us aboard her when she finally was awash
We'd worked like hell to save her, all heedless of the cost
And the groan she gave as she went down, it caused us to proclaim
That the Mary Ellen Carter would rise again
Well, the owners wrote her off; not a nickel would they spend
She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end
But insurance paid the loss to them, they let her rest below
Then they laughed at us and said we had to go
But we talked of her all winter, some days around the clock
For she's worth a quarter million, afloat and at the dock
And with every jar that hit the bar, we swore we would remain
And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again
[Chorus:]
Rise again, rise again, that her name not be lost
To the knowledge of men
Those who loved her best and were with her till the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again
All spring, now, we've been with her on a barge lent by a friend
Three dives a day in hard hat suit and twice I've had the bends
Thank God it's only sixty feet and the currents here are slow
Or I'd never have the strength to go below
But we've patched her rents, stopped her vents, dogged hatch and porthole down
Put cables to her, 'fore and aft and birded her around
Tomorrow, noon, we hit the air and then take up the strain
And watch the Mary Ellen Carter Rise Again
[Chorus]
For we couldn't leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale
She'd saved our lives so many times, living through the gale
And the laughing, drunken rats who left her to a sorry grave
They won't be laughing in another day
And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again
Rise again, rise again; though your heart it be broken
And life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again
Rise again, rise again; though your heart it be broken
And life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again

Led by their fearless front-woman Derina Harvey, this five-piece Celtic-rock group offers a fresh take on traditional tunes and intersperse that offering with their own original jigs and reels. Their infectious rhythmic undertow is layered with rock guitar, dizzying fiddle motifs, and topped by Derina’s powerful voice. These transplanted east-coasters have earned a reputation with their high-energy live show, leaving many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from the dance floor!
The band has proven to be a crowd-pleaser wherever they go. Though the band is based in Alberta, 2015 has seen the group travel across the country, with three trips to Newfoundland to their credit where they have entertained crowds at theatres, festivals, and pubs. They have been featured twice on the main stage of George Street Festival in St. John's, once opening for NL favourites Shanneyganock. Most recently, they have shared the stage with other east-coast favourites such as Jimmy Rankin, The Irish Descendents, Pogey, and even some rock acts including The Trews, Kim Mitchell, and Trooper.
The band continues to build on a growing fan base by promoting their self-titled debut album (released in 2013). The record has garnered radio airplay in multiple regions in Canada (CKUA in Edmonton; K-Rock and Radio Newfoundland in St. John's, NL; CBC, Canada-wide). Their second album entitled "Rove and Go" (released May, 2016) has already gotten airplay on over 30 community and college radio stations across Canada.
Dear John Mckillop: The 'Ladies' have been singing Ballads about Men & by Men for as long as I can remember, granted that only extends back six decades, my first five years or so are a bit hazy, what I find disconcerting, is Men trying to sing a female point of view song. I will have to admit that I found a couple worked quite well, but women singing a mans point of view has been done so often that I hardly notice, especially when the voice & talent of the artist is this good!!!
You tell him, you grumpy old fart!
This one hits hard and I don’t know why. Never known a sailor, and all I know of boating couldn’t fill half a page; but this song cuts deep, and I’m here for it.
I think it's because it's about abandonment and writing people off as much as the vessel. If you listen to some of Stan's other songs, especially: Last Watch on the Midland, his old soul for the losses people feel when they're deemed unnecessary or obsolete.
@@kelseywatts589 music is a beautiful thing. I think I’d tend to agree with you the more I listen to this song and dissect the lyrics.
@@kelseywatts589 The Last Watch is an absolutely gorgeous song. There's no working man's heart it won't touch. Same with Tiny Fish For Japan.
Best version I've heard since Stan.
@@FellstarTube Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your kind words💚
Listening to Derina's voice is just about the best use to which ears can be put.
Thank you so much! We're so glad you're enjoying the music! Actually we just dropped a new single! You can check it out here and pre-save the full new album that'll drop on June 23rd! Thank you again!💚 derinaharveyband.lnk.to/waves-of-home
C cdr 4:45 I😊
Derina's voice and the musical arraignment makes this the definitive version of this great song. Awesome!
Thank you so much! 💚
Somewhere on the other side old Stan Rodgers is smiling at this one.
Oh my God.
This does Stan right by. Holy hell y'all kept the same feel of the original, but your flavour purely enhances it.
This is fan-fucking-tastic!
Couldn’t agree more! I’m a huge fan of Stan Rogers but also really love this band. I feel like if he was alive he would definitely give this a thumbs up

As someone with many cultures in my family, I say this is a great example of the transition from Irish folk to American folk. Amazing job!

Ive been a folkie for15 years, and have been a shantyman, and edmonton raised stan rogers fan. You are one of the first groups that has really done this wonderful song justice. Well done. What a beautiful rendition

Wonderful show last night during the Lantern Series in Woodstock GA. So nice to meet your band and then connect with you UA-cam Channel. PS, the young girl on the video looks like your daughter! Just beautiful!
Thank you so much! We're so glad you enjoyed the show! She sure is! 💚
There is nothing in the lyrics that indicate the gender of the storyteller and this is an absolutely beautiful rendition in which the vocalist (and band) captures the affection, hope, irritation and determination quite successfully
"She gave twenty years of service boys, and met her sorry end... then they laughed at us and said we had to go."
In spite of the fact that the song refers to people performing overwhelmingly male occupations and activities, the lyrics refers to those who repair the ship as "boys".
I don't care if a woman sings it, but the lyrics and context overwhelmingly indicate a male protagonist.
@@asmith8954 Context does, yes, due to time-period, but the lyrics literally never indicate the protagonists gender, even the line you gave doesn't.
@@rumpelstiltskin6150 So, the owners call the ship's crew, "boys", and the narrator identifies himself as part of this group, and you say that this doesn't indicate the gender of him and the crew?
I think you're letting your sensibilities get in the way of your exegesis.
@@asmith8954 No, because that's literally how most women I know would refer to such a group in that situation?
Obviously the protagonist is male (due to the historical context) but the lyrics are entirely neutral to that fact.
@@rumpelstiltskin6150 Mixed groups are not referred to as "boys" in standard English, or really any language. Your reading of that verse is laughable.
I used to think that Schooner Fare did the best version (sorry Stan) but holy smokes! This is great, I love how she goes flat where the other versions go sharp or drops to the seventh instead of staying on the fourth/fifth.
Beautiful. Put a lump in my throat!
Thank you so much!💚
Always a great song. This version adds a dimension that I like.
In fact this has become my favourite version of the song.
Amazing song love this one thank you for uploading it.
this reminds me of the current project to rise the Säntis steamer on the "Bodensee".
Please let there be a live video version of this cover. Infreakincredible!
Best version I've heard. The played it on CBC's Labrador Morning a couple of days ago, and I had to find it.
Yes, it's a brilliant song by Stan Rogers, and many excellent versions have been recorded and performed, but I think this is the best one.
This is TRULY GORGEOUS
Got this album 2 weeks ago .... nearly worn it out i've been playing it so much!
Thank you so much! 💚 Stay in touch - we have a brand new song coming out on Friday and a new album dropping in June!
Makes me tear up just like the original!
I like your version of The Last Shanty so I was thrilled to see that the very next track is The Mary Ellen Carter, which is one of my favourite sea songs.
Awesome! We're so glad you like it! 💚
So I recently discovered you guys and absolutely love this!
진짜 말이안됨 ...너무좋음
From the moment I first stumbled across this band, I somehow knew this cover existed. ^.^
Men should sing this song...but nice try ladies
How do you know all the crew were men?
Personally, I think Stan would be pleased with how well they performed his song...
anyone can sing a song if they want to. This rendition brought me to tears. Stan would be overjoyed by this.
I mean, the song never specifies the gender of the singer, so...
Is this what men talk like when they have a tiny dick? News to me
