they changed so much stuff in the most recent cods (dead silence, spawns, re rolling streaks, no score streaks, disbanding lobbies, sbmm, maps... ). All these things combined in made a fun experience in past titles. One or two of these aren't deal breakers but all of them combined make a frustrating experience that has me take a wait and see approach when it comes to new cod games where it used to be an automatic buy every time I feel.

Underrated comment. I would add pick 10 system or some equivalent like ghost’s to that. Sick of the nade spam from everyone being forced to use one on spawn. Flak jacket will always be the crutch perk no matter the slot it’s in as long as everyone spawns with nades.

Something I feel isn't talked about enough here is how the minimap is completely busted in new cods. It straight up doesn't work. Vanguard added a perk to fix this but I shouldn't have to run a perk to fix what is more of a bug than a feature in your game.

BO2 is the perfect balance for dead silence imo. Base footsteps weren’t overly loud and it was in a competitive perk category (dexterity, tac mask, extreme conditioning). Not only that but the pick 10 system made it so you would have to sacrifice an extra couple perks or an attachment to get it.

Something like high alert could have that tacked on and now it goes from being a mediocre perk to a solid counter pick. As unrealistic as it sounds, I think it would be interesting to make dead silence be linked to gun attatchments. Like, either the more naked your gun is, the more silent your footsteps are, or maybe doing things like using no stock and a short barrel will make you silent but will add more recoil. That way there is a true advantage/disadvantage to running with it. Right now, I feel like dead silence is an absolute crutch perk.

I don't think dead silence can really ever be a crutch perk because it wouldn't be the perk of choice for every playstyle. I think another problem with MW 2019 was that the weapon meta just catered specifically to campers. The 725 was the ultimate camper's paradise and it made pushing into rooms a death sentence. I'm on the side of bringing dead silence back for MW2, but ONLY if they 'dampen' footsteps and don't entirely mute footsteps. One of the strengths I think we can all agree on was SnD on MW 2019 was the best its been in years. Awareness made you hear dead silence user’s footsteps however, your footsteps were still 60 to 70 percent silent so you really had to concentrate your ears to hear that player. I don’t understand why people don’t want a counter to dead silence. Just Imagine if thermite charges, Semtexs, exploding crossbows and Molotovs didn’t kill riot shield players. everyone but the riot shield player would be angry. (As a constant dead silence user, there has to be a counter to it, if there isn’t then there’s no reason to have it in the game) Old cods have always had something to counter everything but kept the perk or whatever you was using still relevant for the most part.

They should bring back old school ghost too. Having to move to not be on the radar doesn’t work in a mode like s&d. You could be the last man alive in a 1v3 and they use a uav but you’re not in the position where you can just start moving around and because of that you’re dead cause you either showed up on the map or died cause you have to move when it wasn’t safe. Same can be said for if you’re a few kills off from a nuke or a big streak, uav comes up but you’re in a spot where you just need to chill for a second but cause you have to be moving for ghost to work you get killed.
You talk a lot about checkers and chess but it sounds like you want to play more checkers then chess. Not having to check usual corners or spots where someone might be camping. You would just rather the map give you the info. I know you say other wise but your arguments against ghost say the opposite.
Being able to build a full stealth class for s&d and other times you wanted to play like that was cool. In todays cod they try to force you to play one way rather then give players the choice. I’ve played a lot of hardcore and theres no map and we still seem to rush around just fine cause we check our corners and usual camping spots.
The only reason people argue against old school ghost is cause they want to run around full bore chasing red dots without having to check corners and have peoples positions spoon fed to them.

Eeeeh, for once i don't actually agree with you, Ace.
In my opinion, having a keen ear should be rewarded. And besides, slow and non-aggressive playstyles are already very discouraged, even in MW2019 (They are a little more viable there, but you'll still find more success running around with extremely fast loadouts, remember the stockless meta?). I can agree with footsteps being less loud when non-ads walking, but you shouldnt be able to sprint super fast all over the place without making a sound. It's just kind of unfair, especially when paired with a suppressor. Dead silence paired with lightweight in BO2 is absolutely devastating and a ton of people use that for good reason. i disagree on the minimap point too. The only way to tell that a stealthy played is flanking is after he's killed someone. But that kinda defeats the point of trying to counter-flank. Suppressors + Dead Silence won't show anything on the minimap. And imo that paired with being super fast is not balanced, nor does it create a very high skill gap. Shooting people in the back isn't particularly challenging. There's a good reason why all very competitive FPS games are slower paced and have footstep audio.
So, i'd say i dislike both a dead-silence perk AND an awareness perk. They're both very uninspired and just straight up counter each other, and almost always become the most picked perks in whatever game they're in.
In summary, i'd like to see less loud walking footsteps but keep the running sound fairly high. This way you can still flank moderately fast, but not blazing fast.

It’s such a crucial perk that’s integral to having a good COD game but IW’s head is so stuck up their ass that they don’t get it. The perks from MWII leaked and guess which perk wasn’t in that leak, Dead Silence. If MW19 had Dead Silence as an actual perk, not some stupid field upgrade, that game would’ve been INFINITELY better and way more fun. I’m hoping the same thing that happened last year with Vanguard’s beta happens again this year with MWII. No Dead Silence perk in the beta, community rightfully complains, Ninja gets added into the full game at launch. Unless the footstep audio is drastically lower than MW, MWII without a Dead Silence perk will once again be a campfest and will punish people for being aggressive and playing COD how it’s always been played.

Hey Ace. I really appreciate that you brought up the counterpoint "they should balance the footstep audio" in the video. Honestly, that is the boat I sail in. I'm not entirely against Dead Silence, but I believe that before Dead Silence is even considered for use, audio in a Call of Duty game should be balanced. I know it's hard to balance audio, as you said in your video that everyone had a different concept of balanced audio. Maybe this is just nostalgia talking but a lot of the Xbox 360/PS3 era CoDs had really good audio balance, especially when it comes to footstep audio. You may not hear the footstep audio all the time, but if someone was close to you, you could hear the footsteps. However, they weren't loud like in Modern Warfare 2019, and it still took some skill to figure out where the enemy was.
I think the reason people are demanding Dead Silence be in the game as a perk nowadays, especially for MW2, is because these past few games have audio problems, not necessarily because it's been in many past games. Modern Warfare 2019 was too loud when it came to footstep audio. I always thought they should've lowered the footstep audio in general so that way people would less likely camp (although I found there were other problems that led to camping, more so than just footstep audio) and it would have been more acceptable to have Dead Silence as a perk. Also, Vanguard has really bad audio as is with enemy footstep and gunfire. I only ever heard enemy footsteps 3 times in that game, and enemy gunfire in that game is either very low or nonexistent (I know this isn't really an argument against Dead Silence, but I wanted to bring home the point that these past few CoD games have audio problems).
All I ask for in a CoD game when it comes to audio is that footstep audio isn't so loud where you can hear enemies from 30 miles away while also not being very quiet to where you can't hear anything at all, and that Dead Silence isn't a crutch perk but instead an option (although it was more of a Create a Class problem, Dead Silence was a must have perk in Cold War... alongside 5 other perks at the same time). But that will be a hard task for the developers to accomplish... especially when there are more pressing problems with these CoD games.

Can’t have dead silence without amplified, eavesdrop or awareness. I’m happy you brought up those two perks. Seems like everyone keeps forgetting about it. hey TheXclusiveAce, I sure hope you see this comment as well as other people I interacted with on your last video. Firstly, thank you very much for taking to the time to address this topic with great detail AND class. Suffice it to say I was a keyboard warrior for the "get rid of dead silence/ninja entirely" group in the comment section of your last video, but have completely flipped after watching this video to the end. Looking back now, I think my jaded and shallow perspective came from my playing of only SnD on MW19 mainly as of late. I kinda threw out my experiences from previous CODs and even all my time on MW19 Domination and Hardpoint. Your points are SO fair for respawn game modes and I agree with all 3 completely. It was funny because by 10:19 I was like "dang it, I'm agreeing with him >:(" lol! Even held out for the counterpoint about balancing footstep audio but once you addressed it, I had to agree there too. Especially about how you said my perfect footstep audio balance might not be yours, so it's better to have the option. What got me really excited in this video was the part about the perk pool that dead silence could be in! I love to imagine a rock paper scissors effect in each perk group in relation to the game mechanics they affect, pretty much like you said there could be Dead Silence, Ghost, EOD, maybe Double Time/Marathon too. That would be a really cool way to balance it. I appreciate you putting in the effort to offer ideas and compromises throughout this video, it is really well done. I hope nothing was taken personally from my near tirade on the last video's comment section as I love your videos and look forward to your content and takes! Thanks :)

Soooooooo many die hard MW19 purists defending no DS as a perk. 1- COD since its birth was an arcade shooter, its not Insurgency. 2- COD has competitive but was NEVER designed to be comp from ground up unlike CS, Valorant, Siege etc… 3- DS as a perk would have helped in MW19 but is no substitute for poor map design/flow and IW messing about with the minimap.
This video perfectly explains why it needs to be a perk.

  • @Peluceus

TL;DR: Your suggestions are decent and better than their current implementation IMO, but just like their current solution are all complete overcorrections and don't do anything to eliminate the reason why all this talk about perk vs. field upgrade is such a popular discussion: sudden and frustrating deaths.
Imo I feel that all they've done so far with footsteps and their loudness and the usefulness of being silent are all total overcorrections. I feel that COD has reached a point that it should be the most 'universal' shooter -- at least with the Modern Warfare series. Vanguard and BOCW are incredibly fast-paced compared to MW and cater the most to aggressive gameplay, which is fine but not fine for a game that I feel should fill the 'universal shooter' role; where the game is so big and versatile that all playstyles are balanced in one way or another. I've heard so many times that COD is a generic shooter, and I feel that is an abuse of the term because I feel that COD can, esp at its best (but not exactly its most balanced, IE OG MW2) cater to a large variety of playstyles - which people just call generic. In this way, a good way to counter an overreliance on footsteps (and at the same time the over usefulness of shotguns) is map design and balance. Longer angles and less cramped at most points will make footsteps just overall less important. However, that messes with the average engagement distance and the identity of the game a little too much.
This is a game that does quite often call back to its roots with returning maps and whatnot. Because of that, the distance isn't going to be a permanent solution with this much establishment to these callbacks. And I also have to entirely disagree with your point that eliminating footsteps makes the game less like checkers and more like chess. I feel that it isn't checkers to chess -- it's chess to chess but you can make your pieces invisible. That argument sacrifices the 'easy to learn hard to master' aspect that I feel makes for a good game - raising the skill ceiling to the point that experts are near gods -- which I feel is a massive disservice to game balance and design because it completely shuts out new players from doing well just because they don't know the intracasies of the literal metagame. An overreliance on the metagame is just as bad on the receiving end as being unable to hear someone immediately behind you because the outcome is always the same for the victim - frustrating deaths. Part of your skill as a high-level player shouldn't be knowing concepts that only a seasoned player would be able to comprehend or bother learning about - it should be knowing how to avoid the plays that would give a new player the heads up.
Furthermore, I don't think balance should completely destroy one life game modes that have been in the game as long as the perk, or be the one exception where you need to run the perk to be competitive. That doesn't eliminate the problem, only hide it to punish the people who really do only enjoy the one-life game modes. I agree that if there is a silence perk then you should have a direct perk counter to completely silent footsteps, as well as environmental factors to help people who don't want to sacrifice something as useful as a perk slot just to fight against this one perk - discouraging turning itself into a crutch perk in these fringe situations. If you ask me I think making silent movement a field upgrade with limited use and a long timer has been a horrible bandage to a poorly balanced ability. Silent sprinting for a limited time should be a weapon perk ala Vanguard allowing you to get instant health or movement speed after a kill for a few seconds, balanced by the gunfire of the firefight. The perk itself should be limited making everything except sprinting quieter. A perk like tracker will allow you to hear all silent movements normally. It would be cool if a perk like high alert warned you that your footsteps can be heard. Also, since I'm talking about high alert, you should get a little icon like you do for battle-hardened or EOD if you trigger someone's high alert.
