    Including "I don't want to follow directions" in the concept of the achievement gap certainly is an interesting approach....

    There are many ways to experience and perceive the world around us and being culturally competent allows teachers to be knowledgeable and open-minded to the different views, beliefs, ideas, and values their students might possess. These views might be opposite in nature to a teacher's own, but by being culturally competent, a teacher can find other ways to assess their students' abilities.
