I love the setup of this scene. The obscenely long table, the podium, and the usage of the microphone. All tools to make one feel powerless and make those upon them justified in their perceived stature. Sometimes we use those items to give voice and bring people together. Other times it is the exact opposite. We see this everywhere in our world today from the smallest boardroom to the podiums that powerful people speak at

Serling was brilliant!! This episode is now our reality!! He knew what was coming, and through this show tried to warn the masses! But like then as now, many don't listen!
The Bible warned this. Please stop saying he only did because so many have been warning the future people of these things that will happen. And guess what?? There are people today who are waring us about these things that are coming right NOW.
This applies pretty in all times and all places. Equally relevant during the 3rd reich, when the USSR was around and long before. Would have been applicable even in ancient times.
Along with Orwell's 1984, ( 1949, ) and Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, ( 1953, ) many authors had warned of the danger of totalitarianism. In 24 minutes, Serling dramatically captured the evilness of censorship. Elegantly acted by Meredith and Weaver as the protagonists, this episode features Serling's best writing. His intro and outro are brimming with caution against accepting dictatorship.
Only thing is Bradbury, despite absolutely writing about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, was not trying to write about the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, he was trying to write about how much he hated television.

To Serve Man is my favorite episode. This one was also very deep. There will never be another show such as the Twilight Zone. Great television for sure. And the story lines were far before their time.
Burgess Meredith is my favorite actor of all time, in part because of his work on TZ, Batman 66, and the Rocky films. Fritz Weaver chewed the F*** outta the scenery on this one too.
He was also the original actor for George in "Of Mice and Men", and his performance was so iconic (along with Lon Chaney Jr. as Lenny) that it was parodied countless times in MGM cartoons.
Or the man that believes they are afforded these rights without having to perform the duties necessary for both he and his kind to survive. A selfish man in a selfless world is a cancer that needs snuffed out. A "man" is not born rightious. He is made so. This is when we call them men. Rights shall exist only after this title is given. To female. Or to male.
RIP Neil Peart. He was a reader of ALL books and one of Twilight Zone's biggest fans. He spent his last days volunteering at his daughters library so he could be near her as much as possible as he wasted away of brain cancer.
I have been watching The Twilight Zone since I was a kid back in the 1960's. I have watched many marathons, and have loved every episode. Thought I had seen them all. But I've never seen this one. Pretty shocking this one is. Pretty terrifying when you consider how close our society is to this state today.
@@stationarywanderer7910 Well, please explain. This episode talks about authoritarianism and totalitarianism. Like George Orwell's books 1984 and Animal Farm, it is based on the Soviet Union which at that time was alive and well, as well as Mao Zedong's communist China, and by then defunct European Fascism. In recognizing and pointing out the parallels in political development between the past and the present, David C. Owen makes a comment germane and timely. Authoritarianism and State overreach is always both dangerous and insidiously evil. Today, rather than destroy books and close libraries, they either outright "cancel" the books i.e. banning the books from school and the curriculum, or rewriting and "sanitize" the books, redefining words so they mean the opposite of their historical definition, (the word "racism" would be the textbook example), and finally repurposing libraries as computer cafe's. 2020 has been a terrible year for Freedom, and it looks like it's only going to get worse. Occidental governments have closed stores and business, ruining lives and destroying livelihoods of millions of citizens, because they and their jobs were deemed non-essential and unnecessary. That is totalitarianism to a "T." And the methods of their closure, coercion both legal and social, are authoritarian. George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Rod Serling, and many others, were warning us from the road we have taken.
@@Nicolas-wd5ec Oh dear God, spare me the canned conservative rhetoric. Serling was very much a liberal, and not remotely a conservative. He would have laughed at your remarks.
The most terrifying thing about this episode is that we as a society are closer to this state now than we were when this episode first aired. Ours is an age that prizes utilitarianism and cold pragmatism over intellect and the human spirit, in a society that worships technology and discourages the pursuit of art, literature, culture and spirituality, either because they don't benefit the state or because it threatens the state's hold over the minds and hearts of its citizens.
Imperator Liberal the liberal arts are not the problem. In fact they are absolutely vital and necessary, even in places where you are too narrow to find them. It is the current rampant abuse of the liberal arts that must be stopped. Try to remember that before everything got out of hand, this was the model of education for hundreds of years. Even the greatest scientists had a thorough grounding in other areas like rhetoric and logic, history, classics, literature, art and philosophy. These were the disciplines that taught them not what to think but how to think. This is what we are missing now and its loss is perhaps irrecuperable.
No it wasn't you permanent victim. Slavery at that time was and always had been a part of humanity. At the time of the founding , the idea of ending slavery was just starting.

"Truth is a menace." Meanwhile trumpers scream FAKE NEWS and storm the Capitol building chanting "HANG MIKE PENCE". They are so wrapped up in Q conspiracies they think Trump is the "shadowprez"
It's frightening to think that in 2021, Fritz Weaver's "Chancellor character" could fit right in with the current social/political environment and actually have his own 30 minute show on either CNN or MSNBC.
Such a good scene. The acting, setting and the best of all the ideas conveyed. And that end quote: "Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the work, dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete" is enternal and can be used to critisize any entities, ideologies and states.

Allow me to explain, when Jesus came into the temple and saw it full of money changers, wealthy elites, power hungry narcissists and slavers, did he ask them to leave? Did he cry?

@@stationarywanderer7910 No. I think he hit the nail on the head. Perhaps you are the one missing the point?
@@Nicolas-wd5ec No, not at all. The point Serling was making is about something entirely else.

Imperator Liberal Found the statist
Imperator Liberal the liberal arts are not the problem. In fact they are absolutely vital and necessary, even in places where you are too narrow to find them. It is the current rampant abuse of the liberal arts that must be stopped. Try to remember that before everything got out of hand, this was the model of education for hundreds of years. Even the greatest scientists had a thorough grounding in other areas like rhetoric and logic, history, classics, literature, art and philosophy. These were the disciplines that taught them not what to think but how to think. This is what we are missing now and its loss is perhaps irrecuperable.
