I remember seeing the first transmission of the video in 1982, I thought it was excellent but nothing could top the original by Greg Lake from 1975. His version became my favorite record the first time I heard it as a teenager and today in 2024 almost 50 years later it is still my all time favorite record.
Lovely rendition Toyah. God Bless Greg Lake: 1947 - 2016.
Here I am in April 2024 watching this video. I can watch it over and over, and I love it more. Thanks you for posting this and sharing the story in the first half. This video was shared by a friend and it made me a fan of your music.
It's impossible to express how happy this video made me.
I loved Greg Lake, and I love Robert Fripp and King Crimson, and I really love this version of this wonderful song. 🥰💯🥰
I really enjoyed this. RIP Greg.
RIP Greg. Greatest Christmas song ever.
A wonderful version of this classic, nice too to hear Fripp for once not denigrating or marginalizing the over-the-moon talented Peter Sinfield. Regardless, very well done. The under-current that both Toyah and Fripp refer to is Sinfield's lament to the loss of innocence, a little worm, as it were, hidden away amidst the beauty and joy of a Christmas classic. Cheers!
Very nice! Rock In Peace Greg Lake...🙏
Best. Husband. Ever. "I've never seen this version but since it's you, its my favorite. "
Her vocals are stunning. She does the song justice. She puts her whole Heart and Soul into singing it.
Robert Fripp LIVING LEGEND
One of my Christmas traditions along with “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”, the Alastair Sim version of “Scrooge”, the Laurel and Hardy version of “March of the Wooden Soldiers” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946). Too many more worth mentioning but these songs and films are my favorite part of the Christmas season. Stay warm and ☮️ to all. 💞🤶🏻🧑🏼🎄
Alastair Sim the greatest Scrooge, love watching over Christmas, Merry Christmas to You 🌲🌲
Thanks for brightening our lives this year and throughout Covid.
I love this song. 'The Christmas we get, we deserve.' ❤️⭐️❤️
There is another utube version at a church service somewhere in UK including Greg lake himself and Ian Anderson which is very pure
This song as played in the video you are watching was my introduction to you and your wonderful music.
What a lovely thing this is. Much love to you Toyah and Robert, you are a collective joy.
I think we need to get this back into the Christmas charts, if wings can do it every year and mud so can Toyah ,
Never seen or heard Toyah performing this. Beautiful version and the staging was good as well.
My favourite "modern" Christmas song.
Toyah, this makes me love you more!
When I cross myself, I say " Emerson, Lake and Palmer ".
Happy Christmas to this perfectly married couple..who were made for each other.
I have always loved the Greg Lake version of this song, but I was unaware that Toyah had performed it at all. So a big thank you for posting this Toyah, you are right to be proud of it, and I am very grateful to have another version of my favourite Christmas song that I can love as much as the Greg Lake version. Love the Sunday lunches, and love you and Robert. Merry Christmas and have a joyous New Year the both of you.
I have never seen this video, but all I can say is what a beautiful rendition. A very happy Christmas to you both.
Greg Lake's timeless classic Christmas hit has always been my favourite Christmas song since it was first released when I was a teenager. I well remember Toyah singing this song one evening, I can't remember what show it was, but I do remember I absolutely loved her take on it. I have often searched for it over the years but never found it till today. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane!
This has a wonderful Kate Bush feel about it. Did not know Toyah at that beautiful soft power to her voice. They are a heart warming couple who clearly deeply love each other.
A lovely post, Toyah!
A Merry Christmas!
Greg Lake,
Christmas 1975 !!
The Christmas we get we deserve, I love that line.
I love both versions, every has a special way to touch hearts. poetic musical connection .
I love this song! Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you two! ... :)
PS: Toyah your rendition is so incredible that when I close my eyes I can “see” Kate Bush and Greg Lake smiling down from the Celestial Rock Legends Arena. 😇
I think you will find that Kate Bush is still very much alive!
Kate Bush?
🤣🤣🤣
One of my favourite Christmas songs !!! Thank you to you both for bringing such great positivity into our lives. Just found your channel , looking forward to checking out more. God Bless you both.🙏💎🙏
I love this track. I was listening to this only last night. This is without doubt the best performance i have come across, sorry Toyah, apart from Greg himself.
You are both lovely talented people . One of my all time Christmas songs, because of the twist. Happy Christmas to you both. May your Sunday lunches continue. They always give me a giggle.
Toyah u look incredible wow looking fantastic.
Every Year I make a point of digging up Greg Lake's Song. I didn't know about Peter writing the Lyrics... I will now look for your version with its great visuals. This is very special for me, Thank you... Love you Both and have a great Holiday Season... Peace...
This has been a favorite Lake song, now I have a favorite performance of it.
One of the best Christmas songs I've ever heard and to he performed by the great Toyah band, all the more fantastic. I'd never heard this before. We get the Christmas we deserve. Perhaps, perhaps not however one thing is certainly true, if we don't put enough love in, we can't even hope to get love back. Perhaps a mutual feeling is what is meant here. So be merry and don't blame anyone else if your not. Share the love and make it wonderful. Merry Christmas everyone.
Robert, it would be a lovely tribute to Greg for you and Toyah to play this.
Everything in this video is absolutely perfect. How can this be???
[Look at Mr. Fripp's face when the vocals begin. Priceless.]
Toyah, I’ve always loved this song and your good self. I really love your enthusiasm for what you do, be it music, acting or infectious interviews and latterly, lunchtime on a Sunday with Robert. Your version of this song is amazing! Have a happy Christmas Mr & Mrs Fripp.
Love
These two are just awesome. So is this rendition.
Happy Christmas! Health, love, happiness and peace to you and Robert 🙏☮️♥️🌲
Really wish Robert and Toyah could do this song on Sunday morning.. always one of my favorites and need to hear it just once on Christmas day..👍
When you surprise your husband with a hit song his band mate wrote and you covered, oh dear, this is gold! They're the very definition of opposites attract.
Love your voice when you hit the sweet, high notes, Toyah.
A great Christmas song, God bless us everyone.
Excellent version of this classic by the unforgettable Greg Lake with lyrics by Sinfield.
My favourite Christmas song Greg Lake or yours is better just not as well known many thanks Merry Christmas x
It was 1973 and I was 15 when I first came across King Crimson due to ELP, and especially Greg's finest ballads which are still the most resonant music in my head I've never ever got tired of. I remember my elevating "Schizoid" experience, the music being something so sublime and otherworldly that I wondered what a young & handsome guy like Greg was doing there, with those wise, mature men! Thank you for your music, and happy New Year, Ms. and Mr. Fripp!
Wow, thank you so much Toyah for posting this fantastic version of yours of what is by far the best Christmas song ever.
My Christmas is always made when I hear Greg Lakes classic come on the radio.
This version will now join my Christmas play list which will start with Greg’s and end with yours.
If in doubt "Yes Dear" is a great fall back!
Sigh. I love this song. Certainly my favourite Christmas song. Always had a nice edge to it. Greg Lake had a fabulous voice and an eye for a deep lyric. Toyah's performance is remarkable. That must have taken some serious commitment.
(We shouldn't forget Sergei Prokofiev's contribution either.)
One of my favourite Christmas song, great to see!
Amazing performance Toyah!! ❤️
Absolutely love the genuine honesty in this video.
Love, love, adore this version
Such a Beautiful woman with that Beautiful Voice!! I just Love the Song!! Merry Christmas to you Both!!😍👍👏🌲🎄
Absolutely love your version of this song. Fantastic. Big love to you and Robert. Merry Christmas
This song holds a unique and special place in my soul. I’ve just listened to you do the most beautiful version of it that I’ve ever heard. The tears are flowing and that’s not an easy thing to induce in me. Toyah - it’s magical. Thank you and a MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!🎄🎁❤️
Luv both of you. Such a great voice Toyah and wonderful version of this song.😎✌️✌️♥️
I remember this so well. It was a one off program called "Pop goes Christmas", Toyah was introduced by David Essex. I recorded it, and played it regularly while I had a VHS.
It brings back great memories. My first Christmas as an adult, rounding off my first year having to work for a living.
Thank you - so much - for this song. I still remember watching it the very day it aired, and it's forever remained my favourite festive song. ❤ How thrilled I was, when you included it on Mayhem...and couldn't have been more chuffed to find it here on youtube many moons ago. It's just...Magical.🥰Your voice, performace, dress, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨...is exquisite.🫶 And oh, those contacts...😻
Oh I just love this!! Greg Lake's version has been my all-time favorite Christmas song - since hearing it in the mid 70s. Your version is stunning. Brava!
Wow that takes me back to the little lady I fell in love with and still am today, Roberts a lucky man Toyah and your a very lucky woman to have found a man who loves you so :)
I first encountered this enjoyable and unusual interpretation of Greg Lake's song in the 1980s. I would love to see Toyah do a new live version of this song somewhere, someday.
Beautiful I really enjoyed this and you
both look great. I’m sure Greg Lake will be looking down singing with you Toyah. Merry Christmas 🎄 ⛄️🎅
This is my favourite version of this son ever and stayed with me ever since I saw you do it in the 80s and we'd just got a video recorder and I had it on a tape for years on the end of your vhs videos release. It got worn out over the years.
Classic, classy version. Love it, will play for friends this Xmas who the same age as us. I was 22 in 1982!
Toyah, it was a wonderful performance which I remember. I love the back story to it, who would have believed the hassle you had getting from Cardiff (where I live) to Manchester to record it! And Robert's connection to Greg also...lovely story.
To me best Christmas song ever, but I agree with you both there are undertones saying so much.
What a couple Toyah and Robert are
I would love to go for a beer with you guys, you seem like such nice, genuine people. Thanks for cheering us all up ❤
I love the colourful vintage clothes Ms Wilcox wears. They're lovely
Absolutely love this song and this version is awesome, I’m old enough to remember it back in the 80s when i had a massive crush on you. All of your performances have never followed the line, you always do your thing making for me, a captivating experience. Love you. Merry Christmas.
Remember chatting in Wynfords kitchen about remembering the first time we met in Nth London and I getting stuck in the window! Must have been that tour of 82 a mere 40 years ago great times!
Really well sung and performed by Toyah - never seen it before
Great version 🎄
The 80s was my time as a teenager and growing up, and I've always said if there was a time in which I could go back it would be then. OMG the Memories were just brilliant and I have so much of the 80s on my play list. I absolutely Loved Toyah, I Loved her Look, her Confidence, and her unique Voice.
I also have the Cult DVDS that she was in Quadrafinia etc (please Excuse me if I spelt it wrong)
I have been watching Sunday Lunch with from the start, and me and my husband really look forward to it.
This really is a great version of I believe in Father Christmas and it certainly will be blaring out Christmas day. I absolutely love the Chemistry, and love that they have for each other, what a Lovely Lovely Couple, and we are looking forward to many more Sunday Lunches.
Merry Christmas both of you from the Crazy Mcgrath Household. 🎅🤶⛄❄️🌲♥️
OH and my Husband says that your as sexy as ever, as you were in the 80s, and I'm inclined to agree with him x
Looking forward to this !
How cute is this !
Wonderful version, Toyah, thank you! I have always loved this song in all of it’s versions, Greg solo, or with Ian Anderson, etc. But I would always avoid the original video with the bombing and the wars. There was the rest of the year to be reminded of such awfulness.
But thank you again, and hello Robert. Greetings and Merry Christmas to all, from Chicago! 🎅🎄🇺🇸
I love this ❤
That was good and a great rendition of an underrated song. I don't remember seeing/hearing your version before but then I would've been running around after a two year old.
I love this song and I remember this performance. I had forgotten all about it until I heard the opening and seeing you there. Please say it’s on UA-cam. I’m so excited to see it again. Still gives me goosebumps. My first ever single. Story behind it. I wanted to buy Donny osmond or the osmonds. My sister was told to take me and she didn’t want to be dragging me around, really grumpy. Dragged me into boots (they sold top 20 only then) so no Osmonds. Bought this in a huff but I loved it and it was played over and over. Now every year when I hear it I tell my family the story 😂😂 every year
I became a Toyah fan in 1982 with "Changeling". I bought up everything I could find. Then when Fripp mentioned the marriage in 1986 my mind was blown. I kind of stopped keeping track after "Ophelia's Shadow" in 1991. But "Kneeling at the Shrine" was incredible!
And "Changeling" is still one of my fave albums ever. Robert should give that one a listen.
Great rendition! I find it interesting the very many different interpretations of the meaning of this song. A lot see it as an objection to crass commercialization of the holiday. Others see it as paeon to atheism - as in you must make your own Christmas and you get what you deserve. My interpretation is that the singer was sick of Santa Claus, White Christmas' that rarely happen etc. to where he he saw the true meaning and "believed in the Israelite." Peter Sinfield's lyrics truly have a twist in them and if nothing else they make you think.
Toyah, I adore your version of I believe in Father christmas! it's powerful! Also love your beautiful outfit you are wearing with Mr. Fripp and also love the black dress you are wearing in the video! You are a fashion icon!!
my favorite Christmas song, i watch your version every Christmas o YT as well as the original. i think both versions represent to me slightly different periods of my life..in 1975 i was 9 years old and everything Christmas was magical, in 1982 as a 16 year old the magic was over and it was just just became meaningless and disappointing.
I am new to hearing your singing, Toyah. Beautiful performance, and as a singer myself, although I am not one by profession, I appreciate how you find something of the true meaning of a song not revealed perhaps in other versions, even in the original.
Robert and yourself should remake it as a single next year
Fripp and Lake were of course close neighbours in east Dorset in the 60's
Incredible! I was just writing a Substack post about Lake’s song for a list of conscious holiday tracks! I’ll need to include this wonderful version if I write another list for next season!
Toyah that’s was absolutely amazing cover ..
This is my favourite Christmas song you should cover that song in your Sunday lunch
Well done
I've never seen the clip either. I love stuff like this, it's so interesting. 👍
Was watching this on Pop Goes Christmas the other day ⛄⛄
Just like Robert, my first time seeing this as well. Very good. There is a rendition on YT with Greg Lake accompanied by Ian Anderson on flute at a church in London with the church choir singing that is absolutely beautiful. Merry Christmas
Lovely 🌋
Nice video, interesting chat. Happy Holidays.
It's sad that band break ups come with friendships broken as well.
I'd love to hear from Robert's mouth the details of an infamous story where he kicked a drunk Greg out of his car, asking to return to King Crimson. I can't imagine what a bizarre moment like this.
