02:09 Morning Wear
Basically, it consists of a black or charcoal morning coat with a peak lapel or notched lapels then you have a black and white striped trousers which are also called cashmere trousers because there used to be some cashmere in them. Then you have a waistcoat which is either single-breasted or double-breasted, usually in a gray that's slightly contrasting or a buff color or you can go with other colors such as light blue depending on your choice and then you have a white shirt, traditionally, it had the detachable collar.
04:47 Evening Wear
Now if you have an evening wedding or if you want to change, you get a white tie tailcoat ensemble. It's likewise a tailcoat but it's cut differently than a morning coat, it's all black, your pants have a double striped galon down the side. You wear a white stiff collared shirt with detachable collar, you wear a Marcella waistcoat and then a bow tie.
06:48 Tuxedo
Basically, you want a black bow tie, you want a tuxedo that's silk faced with shawl collar, you don't want anything that's rented. You want wool because that way, you sweat less and you look better and you feel more comfortable. It really shows in your wedding pictures.
09:02 Regular Suit
The big advantage of going with a suit for your wedding day is that you can reuse it at the office or for other events so if you don't have black tie events to go to outside of your wedding, that may be a wiser investment.
11:31 Blazer Combination
If a suit seems too formal to you, I suggest to take it a notch down, maybe wear a blazer combination, maybe with a pair of chinos but something that's still dressier.
12:31 Groom Do's & Don'ts
- First of all, sneakers or jeans are not something that make you look good so skip those.
- The biggest mistake that I've seen in a wedding was when the groom showed up ungroomed
- Do not rent your Tux

Back in the 90's, such as my parents wedding, it was custom to wear Tuxedos as the groom or guest. Now both guests and grooms just wear their regular Sunday suits. So, when I get married, I'm bringing the groom tux back and wearing one when I get married. I don't even care if everyone else wears suits because it would make me look more dapper in comparison lol.
Write it on the invitation just for the sake of it
Try to arrange the wedding to be at night if you want to wear a tux and respect tradition. Black/White tie are both evening wear as opposed to daywear.
This right here 🙏🏻👌🏼
Go on… go the whole nine yards, do morning dress (or white tie depending on the time)
Raphael, you've mentioned vintage shopping a lot in your videos. Is there any chance you could do vlog style video where you take us along to a thrift store to find a good quality vintage suit for a low price?
Ben Foster Nice idea. Hoping raphael would notice this
John Paul Flores me too I'd love to see it
Yeah that's a good idea
That'd be pretty interesting actually.
Please do this
99.9% of viewers aren't actually getting married.
In Greece the groom wears a black suit with maybe a flower on the lapel. On my wedding I'll rock a double breasted tuxedo or an ivory jacket
I'm very glad he used the word "dapper" instead of "snazzy." I had a few moments this month that required me to dress up, and each time, everyone said I looked "snazzy." If I hear that word one more time this month, I'll flip my lid.
Thanks for sharing ☺️
Love from Bangladesh ♥️ got so many information
It's 4am here, I'm getting married at 5pm. 😭😭
Each video you make is pure excellence.
Thank you!
Rapheal u r the perfectionist! Also i wanna say that u have the best possible Thumbnails and Editing transitions with pictures for your content which helped alot in success of your channel. Keep it up and Congratulations in advance for 100K subscribers :)
0:19. Well, thank you. But, I am just 15 yet
Thank god, for well dressed men...
"When else can you.. in one day?"
Me: hold my casual wear
Nice video! Keep it up!
Vintage dress code for a wedding for life!
No sports jackets or blazers. If you are a groom or In the party tuxedo black tie
Can you please do a video guide about brace/suspenders? I am sure a groom would like to use it when wearing a three piece suit. Love all your videos, thank you for educating us.
I’m getting married, and am doing an evening wardrobe change into my set of 1920’s Saville Row tails. Found them for $300 in a retro shop 10 years ago, and the fit perfectly… I’m FINALLY a getting the chance to wear them after all this time!
I strongly believe universities and schools around the globe should hire you so they can benefit from your extensive overwhelming knowledge lecturing about classic Men's style to their students and faculty staff.
Please cover beach weddings a bit more. I am having my reception in May on a beach in Mexico in the early evening. I would love to hear your advice. Currently, I am planning on a light grey or beige summer suit (so unstructured and breathable materials). I'm still very undecided on shoes but feel I should be going with black oxfords without any brogueing. Thanks for your informative series. I adore your detail.
FYI: I will be looking for suit pants with side adjusters to remove the need for a belt.
Bride...lovely dress...groom...just a shirt, rolled up sleeves and vest....shudder.
By any chance do you have a link to something similar for Brides. As I do lots of weddings I would like to share this video, but only if I have a version for brides as well. ( shared your funeral video, and many people liked that one a lot. Thank you for these themed videos).
No, we focus on men only.
Is it actually practical to wear a tophat this day and age?
Yes.
The effort is worth it
If you want to and feel comfortable then definitely.
great video! I like your presentation skills, especially the positivity that makes everything much more welcoming
It’s not a false positivity either.
I still don't wear the tuxedo before 18.00 o'clock.
I think You also should had said that when the groom wear a morning suit it means that also all male guests have to wear one.
Man, thanks¡¡¡ you're helping me a lot¡¡¡¡
I'd like to see a video on the different types of neck wear. Then you'd be able to explain to me what an ascot is!
Even if a wedding's a while off, I recall the 7 Ps I learned in the army: Prior Proper Planned Preparations Prevents Poor Performance. That is, unless it's suddenly cancelled! Oops! Don't ask how I know!
I'm getting married soon and have been shopping for a black tux. I wanted something a little bit different with its own flare instead of the usual setup. I found a black velvet tux (coat with matching pants) with a shawl collar. I planned on pairing it with a white shirt with french cuffs and a black tie that matched the sheen of the shawl collar. I haven't decided on the shoes yet but I was thinking about a dandelion flat type of shoe. Probably something with a reflective polish or a suede/velvet look to complete the tux. The problem is I seen you refer to velvet jackets in one of your videos as a dinner jacket. I'm wondering if this is still true if there are matching pants to go with the jacket and how its dressed up? Or if its changed in modern style? Or am I possibly making a big mistaken? I don't have a waist belt (vest) or cummerbund to go with the look but I can think about adding one.
You're a life-saver! Thank you for your hard work and informative videos.
Great video as always! I am getting married in a little over a month, so perfect timing :) You emphasise that the boutonniere should go through the buttonhole, but none of my shawl lapel jackets have one, so I would have to pin it, right? Btw. I will be wearing an ivory double-breasted dinner jacket without a waistcoat or cummerbund to stay cool, rest will be classic black tie.
How's the marriage going?
Just a smart pair of slacks and a barong
Wow this so what I needed thank you
Hi.... Thanks for the Great stuff over here...I wanna wear a black suit along with a black neck tie....will it be a wrong combination? Please advise. Also please suggest on the pocket square color.
Thanks in advance.
Hey! Thanks a lot for the awesome video and ideas. Love from India! Am getting married in January. I was thinking of a charcoal suit because it is an evening ceremony and then maybe a tuxedo for the reception later in the night. But one question, I think would clarify a lot for me, belts or suspenders?
Why is the wall behind u moving ? :o
Great video as usual!
Love this video, I hope it include next time Navy blue suit for a groom with a yellow rose. my businessman groom wears that on our wedding day. literally believe some men wears that also ❤️
Pengantin pria
For my custom tux: it's off white single breasted tux with a navy blue velvet peaked lapel. My question is, what do you think of the idea of extending the velvet lapel color/material to the collar? Instead of having the collar be off-white like the tux. I'll also have a navy blue velvet vest, and blue pants.
In same sex weddings, should the two grooms dress identically? Or at least have the same level of formality?
Its up to you two,if you two want to wear tuxedo/stroller,wear it! You should be proud of what you two wear😄
What to wear a heavy groom ...plz give some tips
That's way to dark for a wedding, you should wear a light coloured tie and waistcoat.
Yeah,if for an morning coat, but is still very nice an appopriate
Hey if your, soon to be, wife gets to buy a dress to wear once...
Black all the way!
What did you specify as the dress code for the evening reception on the invitation? Did anyone else (need to) change? Would it look wrong if they didn't?
My suit was brown velvet ? the bespoke suit for my wedding was not made. due to a mix up by the Taylor.
Awesome information!Love it!
Could you use a white tie dress code?
This might be a bit late as a comment, but it may be worth talking about some of the "formal" outfits that a lot of rental places are offering, which aren't really formal. This may not be an issue in the US where the tux rules the roost, but in the UK an awful lot of places will also offer Nehru jackets and various types of frock coat, claiming that they are legitimate variations of morning dress.Whilst I have no issue with people choosing these options if they really want to (it's their wedding after all), it is potentially a problem if people think they are elevating the formality of their wedding even further than normal by choosing a frock coat instead of a morning/cutaway coat. They would essentially be wearing historical costume instead of formal wear - fine if they want that, not fine if they think they are wearing formal wear.
Yes,i tottaly agree,if you want to do an wedding you should alway wear an morning coat, except the groom want to really wear it,i personally have an frock coat, but not for an wedding but just for my love of history
Raphael, I’m getting married in 3 weeks and I’m looking for the most comfortable, solid black socks.....any recommendations?
My friend's said I looked like a limo driver..lol
please do a video on white tie.
If I ever get married, I want to wear a white double-breasted suit with either a white tuxedo shirt and a black bowtie or a plain white shirt with a black necktie with white dots.
I like how you said he or she
I’m sorry but I cannot get my head around wearing black tie during the day. Here in England we sometimes find foreign members of the Diplomatic Corps wearing white tie at eleven o’clock in the morning. To my eye it looks just wrong.
At my school the uniform was short black jackets with striped trousers, such as you describe. We referred to the trousers as ‘sponge bags’ because they were made of the same water resistant material; often abbreviated to ‘bags’.
Is it O.K to wear a navy suit, a white shirt, a navy bow-tie and a light green pocket square?
3:18 I believe that gray vest was stained with what seemed to be wine (but man does the clothing looks gentlemanly)
Yeah,i think that was the cons of buying vintage,a stain that will never come out
I'm never spending a lot of money on white tie because I will never get to wear it, is it ok to buy a cheap white bow tie tail coat and waist coat for a costume
No,you will look like an magician, just wear an regular suit or an stroller, these two you can get a lot wear of it
Heinz Guderian But More Younger thanks
Bro got married in Saint Paul, MN? That’s where I’m watching this from.
14:50 how many times did you get married exactly? Because in every video, you claim you wore a different outfit
What color was your shirt with the navy double breasted suit in Germany? Can't tell if it's white or light blue
Good to know I was right in my choice of tie!
do a vid on morning wear
Don’t forget personal hygiene
What would you wear for a summer wedding??
You should make a video about dancing
great video!
I really like your videos. You appear to have the most creative style. I, however, am confused about the fitting of your pants, because I only see this in old people's wear. UA-cam style gurus rant against it.
I used to buy my son pants like this, and people would say he looked like grandpa. I don't know if this had to do with the fit indeed, or with the fact that he was just a kid. What I want to know is if your fitting style is outdated, or if this is an acceptable manner of dressing also.
Its more of a your own preferences, many youngers people wear fast clothing trend, and he was more giving an option for an classical men.
Hey I need some advise for my pocket square my wedding outfit. I'm wearing a charcoal suit white shirt and champagne tie. I don't want to wear a plain white pocket square. What advise can you give?
Maybe a light grey pocket square? Idk, I'm no expert...
You can try with paisleys pocket square
colors that my soon to be picked out;
green.....
she asked me to get a black suit, green dress shirt and green tie
her second, my second
her family is in the Philippines
my brother-in-law will preside
age: let's say low 50's
size: 6'1"
190lb
full build
any thoughts?
Frankie
Frankie Whittom no, no, no just no. black suit, white shirt. its your wedding after all. you dont want to look goofy.
Black suit? It's his wedding, not his funeral :D..
Totally agree about the greens though. Just no.. :)
Scum8ag I assumed he only has a black suit. if he had something better then I'd totally recommend it but if the only suit he has available to him is black then its better to go with a white shirt.
Every video or article I've seen/read says that the waistcoat should match the suit, and then immediately shows a picture of a waistcoat that doesn't match the suit. I think a contrasting waistcoat looks great if you get it right.
Raphael, you seemed so upbeat sharing about your own wedding experience(s)...it made me smile. Thank you for sharing your insight; I have always enjoyed your approach throughout the years of this channel.
Notice the pocket squarre. Its not a white cotton, as allways, and made of silk. Looks good.
Phenomenal
Hi, would it be bad to wear a wedding tie as a guest to a wedding?
SoupcanoMiso47 if you know that no one else will wear anything near that, don't.
can you wear a velvet jacket to your wedding
thank you very much if you reply
Are women allowed to wear suits?
Could you consider making these ascots for Morning Wear, Raphael?
Actually, we have them. Just taking the pictures right now and then they will be available for sale in our shop. Give it a week or so.
Lovely, thank you.
I think.. this video was recorded in 1949
thanks
thank you
6:57 to skip Morning Dress & White Tie
Why?isnt it was an great info
Raphael are you left-handed? 'Cause I see you have your pocket watch on the right and pocket watches are worn in the non-dominant hand.
Yes, he is left-handed. You can go to his website and type 'Fountain pens', Sven says himself that he is left-handed
Yeah.... Im never gonna need this.
you never know...
wear a white tuxedo, or white suit
That is hideous
@@heinzguderianbutmoreyounge9659 no its not grooms can wear white suit tuxedos aswell, black is a depressing color
@@Gencturk92 no,white is very good with accesories, black was never a deppresing colour for an formal attire, except when you get an dinner jacket, and the colour was not an pure white, its was an ecru/eggshell/ivory,you want a contrast with the dress shirt, and you still wear it with an black side stripe tuxedo trousers, black can helps escalate an outfit to more formal, thats why you never wear an white tailcoat/white cutaway coat/white tuxedo(except off white dinner jacket)you need an contrast, you can't just wear an white shirt with an white tailcoat and white top hat,you will become an bad magician rather than an faboulus groom, black is depressing when you wear it informaly, like black t-shirt with an black sneakers and black jeans,in that case you try to hard
@@heinzguderianbutmoreyounge9659 black is too overrated everyone wears it and normally you wear it when your going to a funeral... people can wear white tuxedos like james bond does, thats better than the black one but even full white is still good as a groom. Your only wearing it once in your lifetime and its the most important part of your life just like the bride wears white wedding dress.
@@Gencturk92 @Gencturk92 white is wayy to stiff in its own colour, james bond wear an off white/ivory dinner jacket, didn't you see the differences? And he wear it with an tuxedo trousers, and black tuxedo is not overrated,an pure white tuxedo just show that you are not know anything about proper rules, but if you want to wear it,wear it,i will not wear an pure white tuxedo, and with thoose hideous satin lapel in off white dinner jacket, and if you want to really look at your wedding party without a shame, you must consider an proper etiquette and rules for tuxedo, its different in what the bride wear, what is overrated was an black suit, wayyy to overated, you can wear an very dark charcola flannel suit into funnerals,an pure white is what make your outfit looks boring and lookalike magician, different it with an black tuxedo with an proper rules and etiquette done properly, you look dashing than other people in the party, even your groomsmen
1:38 that's a lie you always have to flow the dress code SHE sets.
It was all-out blue for me. I wore true blue suit with spiked lapels, ivory shirt with light blue textile/steel cufflinks, light blue paisley tie (half-windsor) and plain sky blue pocket square (puff fold) with cognac wingtip brogue derbys (I know, so casual).
And I bloody loved it!
Planning a formal wedding. I am the groom and planning to wear a Tuxedo; however, I am torn between wearing a black tux the whole time or swapping jackets from an off white during the day ceremony and once the sun starts coming down swap it with a full black tux. For context the wedding starts at 5:00 pm and the sun doesn't go down until 8:45 pm, it's an early June wedding in Italy... The wedding will also be in an outdoor setting. Would love to hear your thoughts/feedback. Thanks!
Hi, first off, congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I think that the notion „what feels right is right“ is best on your wedding day. Despite that wearing black tie an hour before six is also completely appropriate since it makes no sense to change your complete set of clothes after just one hour into the reception. Therefore, it would be great to wear your dinner jacket during this.
I just have one idea/ suggestion. Maybe it would be an option for you to change into a smoking jacket as the evening progresses. These were designed to keep the smoke of your regular evening wear, thus, making it a more practical or casual. The classic design with a toggle front enhances this relaxed look. This special garment could be a great choice if you want to change into something more relaxed as the evening goes on.
Nevertheless, wearing the full-on black tie suit is a completely appropriate and sophisticated choice. I hope that this was in any way useful and I wish you all the luck with your wedding.
Idk why but the way he enunciates words pisses me off
Meh.. was hoping for more modern approaches to attire.
For a more modern approach wear a t shirt, jeans and trainers job done
