Your timing is perfect! My sail ties have been driving me nuts and loosening up all the time. A couple of weeks ago two came loose and one fell off during a race. I have only been using a square knot, but will add the half hitch on either side. Thx! BTW, if looks like you are up too late filming in the dark. LOL. Sail fast and have a move up day Wednesday.
Thanks for the question. Depending how you like to tie them- The have seen both loose and tight sail ties at the clew and tacks. And they ve seen them different ways in top notch world sailors…. So whatever floats your boat.
I run a sailing program with a dozen club owned Sunfish We are setting our rigs at 18 goose 102 halyard Saw a video with Clay Johnson at Colie saying good start is 15 goose 108 halyard Do you have a preference? We use them for instruction and JV Racing
@@SailingAngus it really depends on the wind conditions and the abilities of the sailors. the halyard measurements I take are from the bottom part of the upper spar, metal (not the cap). 106-107 put the boom at a common racing postion, which is low. if you want more room, you can go to 102-105. 108" is VERY low. if the winds are generally light- 16-18 is a good start especially if the sailors are smaller, like under 160 pounds. hope this helps.... if the winds are light, like under 10mph? 15 is fine. on the gooseneck thanks for he question!
Just discovered the half hitches my self while bending on a new Sailrite sail I sewed this past weekend . No untied square knot. Makes me feel good to know I am going in right direction. Great video and I 👍it for you. Have a question about the colder wind and water coming. What type of gear? Wetsuits or dry?
It looks like you are using hollow braid dyneema - good stuff but have you considered making several soft shackles with it? A soft shackle would not require tying and would button/unbutton the sail in no time flat. They can be made all identical in an evening and then you will have something truly snazzy and state of the art rigging wise.
Hi Lee! Thanks for all your video's, they really help me getting my second hand Sunfish better and better. Can you tell me WHERE on lake Garda did you stay? I was in the Southern part last summer without wind. Only motorboats and no sailing at all :-(
Hi Lee, sidebar random question please: how well do you think a sunfish will work with a leg of mutton rig? I want to try that for leisure/ learning... speed is mot a concern, just need to get on the water for time at the tiller in a very forgiving setup. If you think it CAN work well on all points of sail with a sunfish, should the square footage of the mutton leg sail aim to match the offical sail's SA please? Thank you
Bery interesting question- i think the square footage is only one aspect to think about…. The others would be where the draft is, the center of effort and cut of the sail. Because i dont know this, its hard to say for sure- a recreationally sized sunfish sail would be good to learn and improve on…. A LOM sail question: would it also fit in the mast base of a sunfish? What ever you decide to do- Experiment in winds less than 12 miles per hour and hopefully 5-10 mph. Things happen pretty slowly then. Hope this helps! Enjoy the journey!
You can definitely do that…. I would think if one wanted to customize their sail shape to their liking ie- higher or tighter corners it would be easier to do it with individual ties:)
@@LeeSideSailing make your own with the line you cut the sail ties from. UA-cam has DIY dyneema soft shackle vids. Dyneema is easy to work with, and makes nice soft shackles.
I put a pencil in as a gage and it gives you something to pull against when your tying. then just pull the pencil out. maybe it was two pencils. anyways you get the idea.
Great video as always thank you!
Thank you !
Have a great time in Italy Lee!
Thx

3-4am!!! Some people use crazy glue when the knots are in the right place.
would have liked to see more detail at the clews for the foot and the luff

I use a Gill Dry suit. Thanks for the comments and glad to see you’re improving your fish!

Ill have to try that…. Sounds like a winter project as i spliced exactly two lines in my life
Zip ties are strong and easy
Can def work

Northern part, Torbole!

I prefer the Rocket method with lengths of Velcro as sail ties. Very easy to make them consistent, and they double as sheet hangers along the boom.
Interesting idea!!!
Love your videos. So why not use loose zip ties?
You can! Line is more flexible and stronger possibly.
They are also prone to tighten over time from handling, and it's a one-way trip. But yes, you can in a pinch.

Why not just using a single string to lash the sail to the spar winding the line around the spar and through the sail eyes ?

Show us the sail shape when filled with wind, please.
I just up loaded this. It has lots of boats sailing… ua-cam.com/video/a2GXAQDYaE0/v-deo.html
Soft shackles??
Overkill and $$$

I heard of the pencil…. Its one regular pencil :)
Sunfish Worlds website has a photo of one of the Italy Worlds sailers using a screw driver like you describe using a pencil. Interesting idea.
