Story Transcript

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.
Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.
Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.
Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cups! The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.
Live simply. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Love generously.

This isn't about you being rich or poor. The message here is contentment in life. Money, Fame and etc fades but not true happiness and satisfaction.

Yes this video is very inspiring, and it is so true....We need to enjoy life and not look at what we don't have, but enjoy what we DO have. Life flies by so fast, and before you know it, your old and you've spent the best years of your life complaining and being miserable and depressed. Find something in life that brings you joy, and if you can't find any joy, go out and create some joy for someone else, and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Life is waaaaaaay tooo short.
This message is so sorely needed in today's materialistic world.
what a very inspirational message,.... i don't want to think the people who were disliked this video, they didin't value life only the material things in this world.... remember, LIFE is the best gift we have given by GOD, enjoy it and live to the fullest:'))
but we are not provided with enough coffee, there is a constant need to refill daily(ie food) in order to get that I actually need a better cup.
its always nice to see a video like this, i feel like shit right now but this has lifted me up a little because i know its true, i dont have a lot, i was a student, did bad in college, now i have no job, i live with my mum, shes ill, my dad... well hes always been a rubbish dad, hes never done anything to help any of us, no girlfriend, hardly any friends and i feel like im stuck in one shitty place that i cant get out of.

It says about complaints of life, after making particular choices, whatever the cup you choose, its your choice, after choosing, you should not regret it or complain about it. Contentment does not work like stumbling block, but it works like a catalyst to grow further

Beautiful and truthful...... inside is all that matters, not what is on the outside.
I love listening to this over and over. It calms me when I feel that no one is listening to what I have to say when I am showing concern and care to people who are dealing with the addiction of alcoholism and for those who have spouses or friends dealing with it as well.

We all generally doesn't know the purpose or what life is made up of and how to enjoy! We just look around and get disturbed of having not. Make the best of every thing what you have.

Wow. Being a person who has come from a humble background. I find myself always struggling with trying to have more and do better at everything, As I have progressed through my carrer I continue to want more but I continue to be less fulfilled. I am so glad I found this video. I truly made me see things in a new light. Thank You for the great video!

Yes, it only applies to a percentage. The percentage who can afford the coffee. He is just saying that a nice life isn't defined by the things you can show off like the cup, only the quality of the coffee/things that happen in life. Not everyone drinks the same quality of coffee after all. The rich can still afford better coffee, its just about realizing that the stress of "keeping up with an image and lifestyle" is all an illusion.

I prefer a durable travel mug - something that keeps the heat, doesn't crack and still holds coffee even after some hard use.

I would just like to thank you for sharing this video it is truly inspirational. I think if more people thought like this video and starting focusing on everyone around them having a cup of coffee instead of worrying about what kind of cup they had we all would be able to enjoy life (the coffee) the way God intended us to. But too many people are worried about what kind of cup they alone have and do not give a damn about others.

@elcanful nope here in the Philippines. children who came from homeless families are drinking coffee without creamer and sometimes without sugar as their substitute to MILK, it is considered to be there part of their daily diet accompanied with a "PANDESAL" -Salt bread which i think still the cheapest bread in our country and you can see in their faces the satisfaction it gaves to fill their empty stomach. and for me it is the SOURCE of THEIR SURVIVAL. :)

This person forgot to represent some of the cups. Some of the cups have cracks in them. Others have holes in them. Some of them are missing a handle. The ones who have such poor cups as these cannot share the same quality of life as those with the fully functional cups.
